Eckington Poppy Club 

It all started in lockdown when 

Armistice day and Remembrance 

Day was cancelled due to Covid. 

With plenty of time onmyhands 

I decided to start crocheting 

poppies.astheystarted to mount 

up, Idecided toask Eckington if 

anyone wanted to join me and 

the projectgot underway. 

forcesthatdiedmakingthe world 

abetter placefor us. The idea was 

to get people in the community 

making poppies different sizes, 

styles and shades of red and sew 

them onthe cam net. This would 

be displayed on the tower of 

St Peters and Pauls Church 

Eckington. 

Christmas arrived and as we also 

neededtotop up the poppiesthe 

project went back into our own 

homes. 

As Iamveteran, Iwantedtomake 

something different with a 

military feeltoremember the

poppiesintheir own homes.After 

many months and the end of 

lockdown in site (August 2021). 

Eckington Poppy club started to 

meet in the church hall. We found 

we had abigger task than first 

thought so for Armistice Day and 

Remembrance 2021 our project 

was displayed inside the church 

for the community to see our 

progress.

HISTORY 

This month Killamarsh Heritage Society mark 10 years 

since the three sculptures were erected on the Trans 

Pennine Trail just above Forge Lane in Killamarsh.

The sculptures were unveiled on the 12th 

of March 2012 as part of aConnect2 

projectbySustrans including the two foot 

bridges over the River Rother and linking 

the Halfway tram terminus with the Trans 

Pennine Trail at Killamarsh bypassing the 

busyB6058 Station Road. 

Sustrans, the sustainable transport 

charity launched its five year Connect2 

projectinAugust2006 and it involved the 

creationofnew cycle and walking routes, 

bridges and otherfacilities in 79 locations 

around the UK. It aimed tocreate new 

networks of local paths, improve cycling 

and walking access and to connect local 

areas. 

The scheme provided alinkfor Killamarsh 

residents to the tram terminus and 

Morrisons at Halfway and alsoprovides a 

safe route for Halfway residentstoaccess 

the Trans Pennine Trail both north 

towards Rother Valley Country 

Park/Sheffield and south towards 

Staveley/Chesterfield. The scheme 

comprises ofa33metre bridge over the 

River Rother, a31metre bridge over the 

railway line and tarmac 3.5 metre paths 

linking to the new bridges from Old Lane 

(in Halfway) and Forge Lane (in 

Killamarsh). 

The sculpture installation is one of 

several created as part of a national 

portrait bench co-ordinated bySustrans. 

Local people were chosen tobepart of 

the tableau –one to representKillamarsh 

(NorthEastDerbyshire), one to represent 

Sheffield and one to represent 

Rotherham. They were chosen onthe 

basis of their individual contributions to 

the community. The selection was made 

from public nominations and a 

subsequent vote. 

The silhouettes were reproduced from 

photographs cut from sheet steel which 

were left untreated so as to attain a 

weathered appearance. The wooden 

bench has asmall round plaque set into 

one end describing the contributions of 

the three chosenpeople. 

The final three which you will see today 

are: 

Representing Killamarsh– 

Corporal LiamRiley 

A British Army soldier with the 3rd 

Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment who 

was tragically killed in Afghanistan 

aged 21 whilst trying to safe afriend’s 

life. 

Representing Sheffield - 

Clinton Woods 

IBFlightheavyweight World Champion 

Boxer 2005-2008. He now works to 

motivate young people in Sheffield. 

Representing Rotherham - 

Colin Savage 

Achampion oflocal causes who has 

worked tirelessly for the community 

and local people throughout his life.

TheTechnique Stadium was the 

venue for acharity Burns’ Night 

in aid of the Chairman’s Appeal 

for AshgateHospice. 

Guests donned plaid and 

enjoyed a traditional Scottish 

meal in honour of the great 

Bard. The haggis was piped in 

by four Scottish pipers and Ode 

to the Haggis recited. Thepipers 

provided arousing rendition of 

various tunes reminiscent of 

north of the border! 

Pictured with the pipers are Councillor Martin Thacker with the 

Anglo-Scottish Cup and singer Charlotte Beth. 

The Anglo-Scottish Cup was on 

display, since Chesterfield FC is 

the lastwinner of the competition 

and remain undefeated 

Anglo-Scottish Champions. 

Charlotte Beth, alocal singer who 

has worked with professionals 

such as Michael Bolton, John 

Parrand LaLa Brooks, ensured a 

musical set of songs for 

everyone to enjoy and dance to. 

Chairman of North East 

Derbyshire District Council, 

Councillor Martin Thacker said:

involved. 

Both ofLuke’s Grandads –John 

and Terry - were supported by 

Weston Park Hospital throughout 

their cancer diagnosis and 

treatment. Unfortunately, Luke 

lost Grandad Terry on the 2nd of 

February following a long fight 

with Oesophagal cancer onLuke’ 

15th birthday. 

LOCAL CHRONICLE 

Luke has set aside a space to 

display both the oesophageal cancer 

charity logo and the Weston 

Park Cancer Charity logo free of 

charge as athank you and to raise 

their profile.

Luke, who is 15 and lives in 

Barnsley has, together with John 

Luke will be driving aCitreon Saxo 

in the championships and has 

received substantial sponsorship 

from three companies in the UK 

and Europe and is seeking more. 

However, there are several high 

profile spaces on his car, helmet 

and race suit.

KILLAMARSH PEOPLE ………………INTRODUCING ………. 

This month we introduce Stephen 

Thompson, Chair of Killamarsh 

ConservationGroup. 

Stephen Thompson, moved to 

Killamarsh from London in 2003 after 

leaving travel firm Thomas Cook. He 

joined the Chesterfield Canal Trust the 

same year, becoming involved with the 

exhibition tent visiting various galas,and 

also the Norwood Packet trip boat in 

Worksop. In 2004/5 he was part of the 

build team fitting out anew trip boat to 

be based in Retford replacing the 

Norwood Packet,the Seth Ellis, and was 

one of her first skippers. Later, in2007 

he became responsible for the Trust's 

new exhibition trailer, given the nameof 

JamesBrindley, and accompaniedbyhis 

wife Eva fund raising from a gazebo, 

attended events up and down the 

country promoting the canal and 

contributing thousands of pounds 

towards the restoration. In 2008 

Stephen became aTrustee, serving for 

nine years. Stephen worked for Anglers 

World Travel in Chesterfield from 2004 

until his retirement in 2018; a walk 

around Killamarsh between Christmas 

and New Year in 2016 prompted 

Stephen and Eva to approach the Parish 

Council with aproposal to form the Killamarsh 

Conservation Group, initially to 

tackle some ofthe litter problem inthe 

streets and subsequently to build flower 

beds on Sheepcote Road, awildflower 

patch besidethe bridgeonthe cornerof 

Bridge Street and Kirkcroft Lane, and a 

vegetable gardenand two front gardens 

at Killamarsh Infant andNursery School. 

Stephen enjoys driving, having passed 

an advanced driving test back in1978, 

city breaks in Europe, photography and 

being outinthe countryside.

year's programme include acollaboration with Harrogate 

BeerWeek, afocus on creating welcoming spaces for 

everyone in the beerscene withOut &About, International 

Women's Day events,and acelebration of access to green 

spacesunder thebannerofThe OutdoorCity. 

The2022 programmewill be amix of online andin-person 

events. There'll be an exploration of brewing research with 

leading internationalprofessionals;beerand historywalks;a 

running and beer social; and alook at theRighttoRoam 

campaign to mark the 90thanniversary of theKinder Mass 

Trespass. Local collaborators include Heist Brew Co, Saint 

Mars of the Desert,LostIndustry, Abbeydale Brewery,Hop 

Hideout,and Sheffield Feminist Archive. 

Vinyl lovers are in for atreat with the Chesterfield Record 

Fair on Chesterfield Market. 

The monthly fair is open from 9am to 3pm and there are 

more than40traders from around thecountryselling records 

to suit every taste.

and PopMemorabilia. Something for every music and film

Founded in 1864, Sheffield Photographic Society is one of 

the oldest suchsocieties in theworld. Each year, it 

showcases the work of its members with apublic 

exhibition. Afteratwo yearhiatus,the exhibition back in 

the city centre in 2022. 

Around 170 images will be on display, in categories include 

juniors, beginners,photo essay,natural history, and more. 

Images will alsoinclude the trophy winners from 2020 and 

2021,onshowtothe public for the first time. 

Marilyn Roberts, President of the YorkshirePhotography 

Union, will officially open the Exhibition at 12pm on 25 

March. Societymembers will be on hand at various times 

throughout theexhibition's runtoanswer any questions.
