hen I first saw the flat plan and 

article assignments for this 

edition, I thought it was an error 

– to find my name beside the 

Editor’s address assignment. 

The Glamsquad is a special project I 

hold very close to heart, and watching it 

grow in leaps and bounds over the years 

from its humble beginning brings me great 

joy. That said, the decision of the Editor of 

the Glamsquad Magazine to honour me 

with this assignment was overwhelming. 

Ameena Daayo is taking up her role 

as Editor of this great Magazine, and for 

some reason (which I cannot still phantom), 

she has decided to honour me with the 

opportunity to introduce her first edition. 

Without trying to sound overly proud 

(which I am), I can say Glamsquad has 

one of the best teams in the world. Our 

Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Mrs. Remi Diagbare 

is a seasoned dinosaur in the industry whose 

experience and accomplishments can 

match any credentials globally. 

Mr. Layi Success, an Executive Director 

(IT, Design and Print), remains a dedicated 

and steadfast professional whose works 

continue to attract international accolades. 

Mr. Gift Adene, the Editor of Glamsquad 

Online, deserves so much commendation 

for his work and successes with the online 

platform. Not forgetting our amiable Editor 

of the Magazine, Amenna Daayo. 

Together with our incredible staff writers, 

contributors, and other staff, the senior 

management of the Magazine has made 

Glamsquad an envied wholesome family

very proud of this team and even more

that designer is Toyin Lawani – 

the queen of ‘rebel fashion’ and all 

around it. 

As the saying goes, every love

overshadowed by wows, ahhs, 

and oohs when the news of Toyin 

Lawani’s marriage hit the canvas. 

What made the news even 

more interesting was the fact that 

the famous Nigerian celebrity stylist, 

fashion entrepreneur, and CEO 

of the business empire, ‘Tiannah’s 

Place,’ tied the knot with her official

Avocados are, to me, among the most sensuous, luscious 

and luxurious of ingredients. Add how delicious, soft and 

subtly flavored they are, and you get a clear winner for 

Valentine’s Day. If you are planning a menu, especially 

with a hint of romance, avocados should be there.

Avocado Soup With Tortilla 

Crisps And Fresh Cheese 

This is a simple and easy soup to make, yet it sounds incredibly 

exotic. You can serve it hot, if you use hot chicken broth or 

vegetable broth to puree with the avocado, but it is also delicious at 

room temperature or chilled. 

The crunchiness of the tortilla crisps and the tangy notes of the 

fresh cheese contrast nicely with the silky soup. You can make the 

soup 12 hours ahead of time and keep it in the refrigerator. 

RECIPE 

• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 

• 1 tablespoon corn or safflower oil 

• 1 1/4 cups roughly chopped white onion 

• 1 jalapeno chili, sliced in half, seeded if less heat is desired 

• 3 large ripe Hass avocados (about 2 1/4 pounds), halved, 

seeded, meat scooped out 

• 3/4 cup cilantro leaves, rinsed and loosely packed 

• 6 cups chicken broth (may substitute with vegetable broth) 

• 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice 

• 3/4 teaspoon kosher or sea salt, more or less to taste 

• 1 1/2 cups tortilla crisps (see below) 

• 1 cup queso fresco, crumbled (may substitute farmers 

cheese or a mild feta) 

PREPARATION 

Heat butter and oil in a medium skillet set over medium-low. 

Once butter melts and bubbles, stir in the onion and jalapeno. 

Cook, stirring periodically, until the onion has softened and become 

translucent, and the edges are beginning to brown lightly, 12 to 15 

minutes. Add cilantro leaves to the pan. Once cilantro has wilted, 

30 seconds to a minute later, turn off the heat. 

Place avocado in the blender or food processor along with the 

cooked onion and jalapeno mixture, broth, lime juice and salt. 

Puree until smooth, taste for salt and add more if necessary. 

You may serve in bowls garnished with tortilla crisps and cheese, 

or let your guests add garnishes to their liking.

for 30 mins, before washing it off with

• Wrinkles: Mash 2 avocados, add 

2 tbsp cocoa powder and 1 tbsp 

raw honey. Massage the mask into 

your face and let it sit for 20 minutes

Press your lower back down. Contract your abdominal 

muscles (abs) and in one smooth move, raise your head, then 

your neck, shoulders, and upper back off the floor. Tuck in your 

chin slightly. Lower back down and repeat. 

Lunges 

Like squats, lunges work all the major muscles of your 

lower body. They can also improve your balance. 

How to: Take a big step forward, keeping your back 

straight. Bend your front knee to about 90 degrees. 

Keep weight on your back toes and drop the back knee 

toward the floor. Don’t let the back knee touch the floor. 

Interval Training 

Interval training boosts your fitness levels and 

burns more calories to help you lose weight. 

The basic idea is to vary the intensity within 

your workout instead of going at a steady 

pace. 

How to: Whether you walk, run, dance, or do 

another cardio exercise, push up the pace 

for a minute or two. 

Then back off for 2 to 4 minutes. How long 

your interval should last depends on the 

length of your workout and how much 

recovery time you need. A trainer can 

fine-tune the pacing. Repeat the intervals 

throughout your workout.

Where Did Black History 

Month Originate? 

Known as the “Father of Black 

History”, Carter G Woodson was 

born in Virginia in 1875 and 

was the son of former slaves. 

Growing up, access to a good 

education and job opportunities 

were limited, but he ended up 

studying at one of the few high 

schools for black students after 

saving money from working as a 

coal miner. 

Over the years, he gained 

many qualifications, including 

a PhD in history from Harvard 

University. In 1926 he sent out 

a press release to mark the 

first Black History Week in the 

US. Carter G Woodson worked 

tirelessly to promote black history 

in schools throughout his life, 

leaving an indelible legacy. 

The event was expanded 

in 1970, and since 1976 every 

US president has officially 

designated February as Black 

History Month in the US. 

February was chosen in the 

US because it coincides with 

the births of former President 

Abraham Lincoln and Frederick 

Douglass - who escaped slavery 

and became a key social activist. 

Both men played a significant 

role in helping to end slavery.

Start? 

Black History Month was first 

observed from 2 January 1970 

- 28 February 1970 at the Kent 

State University, United States of 

America. 

What Was the Theme of the 

2021 Black History Month? 

Since 1976, every American 

president has designated 

February as Black History Month 

and endorsed a specific theme. 

The Black History Month 

2021 theme was “Black Family: 

Representation, Identity and 

Diversity.” It explores the African 

diaspora and the spread of Black 

families across the United States.
