Franklin Heights graduate honored to serve in Navy<br />
Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyler Beck, a<br />
native of Columbus, serves the U.S. Navy<br />
aboard one of the world’s largest warships,<br />
the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl<br />
Vinson.<br />
Beck joined the Navy five years ago and<br />
serves as an electrician’s mate.<br />
“I joined the military for the educational<br />
benefits offered and for the opportunity to<br />
become a pilot,” said Beck.<br />
Growing up in Columbus, Beck attended<br />
Franklin Heights High School and graduated<br />
in 2017. Today, Beck relies upon skills<br />
and values similar to those found in<br />
Columbus to succeed in the military.<br />
“My upbringing in Columbus taught me<br />
the value of hard work,” said Beck. “If you<br />
work hard, good things will come.”<br />
USS Carl Vinson, like each of the Navy’s<br />
aircraft carriers, is designed for a 50-year<br />
service life. When the air wing is<br />
embarked, the ship carries more than 70<br />
attack fighter jets, helicopters and other<br />
aircraft, all of which take off from and land<br />
aboard the carrier at sea. With more than<br />
5,000 sailors serving aboard, Carl Vinson is<br />
a self-contained mobile airport.<br />
Aircraft carriers are often the first<br />
response to a global crisis because of their<br />
ability to operate freely in international<br />
waters anywhere on the world’s oceans.<br />
Carrier strike groups have the unique<br />
advantage of mobility, making them far<br />
more strategically advantageous than<br />
fixed-site bases. No other weapon system<br />
can deploy and operate forward with a fullsized,<br />
nuclear-powered aircraft carrier’s<br />
speed, endurance, agility, and the combat<br />
capability of its air wing.<br />
The Carl Vinson and its crew recently<br />
returned to San Diego following an eightmonth<br />
deployment to U.S. 3rd and 7th<br />
Fleets areas of operation.<br />
With more than 90 percent of all trade<br />
traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the<br />
world’s international phone and internet<br />
traffic carried through fiber optic cables<br />
lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue<br />
to emphasize that the prosperity and<br />
security of the United States is directly<br />
linked to a strong and ready Navy.<br />
Beck and the sailors he serves with have<br />
many opportunities to achieve accomplishments<br />
during their military service.<br />
“My greatest accomplishment has been<br />
making rank as a petty officer second<br />
class,” said Beck. “My hard work and dedication<br />
has resulted in me being promoted,<br />
which gives me a chance to lead.”<br />
As Beck and other sailors continue to<br />
train and perform missions, they take<br />
pride in serving their country in the United<br />
States Navy.<br />
“Serving in the Navy provides a great<br />
sense of camaraderie,” said Beck. “I am a<br />
part of a team who has my back, and I have<br />
theirs.”<br />
