CYCLIST SHAYLAH Sayers
has returned from her first
national championships with
six gold medals.
The 13-year-old Papanui
High School student made a
clean sweep of the under-15
category of Cycling New
Zealand’s track national championships.
“I’m super-stoked with my
results, it couldn’t have gone
any better,” she said.
“It was so much fun getting
to race all those girls and being
a part of the Canterbury team.”
Huge success at nationals
PEDAL POWER: Shaylah Sayers (left) with coach Terry Gyde and Lizzy Thomson after the duo won the under-15 girls
500m team sprint title.
Shaylah had been a competitive
track cyclist for just
six months before taking part
in the event at the Cambridge
Velodrome.
Canterbury Track Cycling
coach Terry Gyde said when
training with the teenager, she
had reached speeds he would
expect of his elite cyclists.
“It was a surprise for everybody
else but I kind of had an
inkling.”
However, he kept quiet so
as not to pressure her with
expectations as they prepared
for nationals.
School
pathway
plan hits
financial
road block
• By Fiona Ellis
PLANS FOR a new 700m path
connecting three Burnside
schools seem to have stalled
after the Ministry of Education
estimated the project would cost
$1.3 million.
Ilam MP Sarah Pallett, who
lobbied for the Cobham Intermediate,
Burnside Primary and
Allenvale schools pathway last
year, said this was “far in excess”
of predictions.
“I am hopeful that this conversation
can be kept open and
we can work together to find a
solution that works for the community,”
Pallett said.
The redevelopment of the
schools as part of a $1.3 billion
Christchurch Schools Rebuild
Programme raised the question of
path redevelopment, as the original
plan did not include it.
Pallett raised the issue at a
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
meeting last year, as reported by
Nor’West News last April.
The path keeps children, pedestrians
and cyclists off the road
when moving between schools.
The ministry’s property delivery
associate deputy secretary Sam
Fowler said the estimate was provided
by a quantity surveyor.
“[It] included provisions for
groundworks, base course and cycleway,
fencing, lighting, signage
and contractor management costs
and design and consenting fees.”
‘It’s a nice feeling to give to people’
• By Emily Moorhouse
AN 8-YEAR-OLD’S act
of kindness has not gone
unnoticed.
Emilee Dawson wanted to
make sure others waiting in
line at the petrol station weren’t
getting thirsty after experiencing
a lengthy wait with her mum.
Emilee and her mum Phee
Dawson had been in line for
about half an hour to get fuel
from the Woolston Waitomo,
because prices were set to rise
that evening.
When the pair arrived at
their home just across the street
Emilee asked if she could go and
give out free drinks to people
also waiting in line.
“They were sitting out there all
afternoon and I didn’t want them
to be thirsty like I was,” Emilee
said.
She filled up two trays
with cups of juice, Coke and
lemonade and, with her mum,
walked them across the street to
hand out.
Her proud mum said she
thought it was very sweet her
little girl wanted to do this for
others.
Her kind act was
acknowledged a few days later
when a package from Waitomo
arrived on their doorstep,
addressed to Emilee.
Emilee was delighted by the
surprise and said the kiwi teddy
was her favourite.
When asked why she wanted
to give out drinks Emilee said:
“Well, because people will like
you and you will have friends
and it’s a nice feeling to give to
people.
“I feel it’s better to give than
receive even though I still
got stuff, which was nice, but
it felt better giving out the
drinks.”
Total clean sweep
of titles in grade
• From page 1
“People like that come probably
once a decade, once a generation.
She’s certainly opened a lot of
eyes.”
Fellow coach Hamish Ferguson
said it was very unusual to see a
total clean sweep of the grade.
“Her performance is extraordinary,
especially for somebody
who only started track cycling
in our junior development programme
a few months ago.”
This was especially impressive
given that most of her experience
was on outdoor tracks, he said.
“She’s been training hard and
racing hard at Denton Park, but
to know how to race tactically on
the indoor velodrome
is amazing.”
Shaylah opened a
stunning campaign in
the under-15 division
on day one with victories
in the elimination
race and 500m time
trial.
She also topped
the podium in the
points race, derby and
scratch race before
combining with Lizzy
Thomson to claim the
500m team sprint title
during last Saturday’s
final day of competition.
Her dad, Laurie,
who accompanied Shaylah to
nationals, said it was amazing to
watch her do so well.
“The first one was a bit of a
shock, and she just followed on
from it,” he said.
Although she had only been
track cycling for a short time,
she had been mountain biking
with her father from a young
age, Shaylah told Nor’West News
earlier this month.
Her father also recalled taking
her on bike rides when she was
small, in which she struggled to
keep up.
“Then she got older and she just
took off, now I can’t keep up with
her.”
IMPRESSIVE: Shaylah Sayers
after claiming the under-15 girls
elimination race title.
REBUILD: Cobham Intermediate, Burnside Primary and Allenvale schools are being
redeveloped as part of a $1.3 billion Christchurch Schools Rebuild Programme, and Ilam
MP Sarah Pallett is pushing for safe access to the schools.
PHOTO: STAR MEDIA
Ministry initially open to some funding
• From page 1
The ministry initially indicated
that it was open to funding some
costs towards the path although
it was not technically in its remit.
As a public path, the provision
of a redeveloped path would fall
to the city council.
The ministry consulted the
schools, the city council and the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board last year,
Fowler said.
“Following these discussions
and having considered the likely
investment needed and management
challenges of an accessway
alongside these operational
schools as well as the potential
benefits, we have decided not to
pursue the proposal further.”
City council head of transport
and waste management Lynette
Ellis said $180,000 had
been allocated for the
lighting of the path next
year in the draft Annual
Plan, currently out for
consultation.
This was what it had
been asked to fund, she
said.
However, this was on the assumption
the path would be paid
for by the ministry.
The pathway was used by area
residents as well as those walking,
cycling, and riding scooters
to school, Ellis said.
“Cobham Intermediate has
Bridget
Williams
had a relatively high level of active
transport . . . in 2020 40 per
cent of its students either cycled
or scootered to school.”
Community Board chairwoman
Bridget Williams
said the board’s position on
the issue was based on community
feedback.
“What we’ve been hearing
is some of the schools
don’t actually want the
path,” she said.
“For a cost of that amount, we
would hate to say this is something
we could deliver when
financially, the council can’t.”
However, the board would look
at other options if there was a
demand for it.
A word from Ilam MP
Sarah
Pallett
Turn everyday
essentials into
SuperGold
Since coming into Government,
Labour has worked hard to support
low and middle income Kiwis and
we’ve just taken another step to make
things a bit easier.
The war in Ukraine has caused a
global energy crisis that is being felt
across New Zealand and I know this
price spike has been tough for many
of us here in Christchurch.
While we can’t control global events,
we can control the support we
provide New Zealanders.
That’s why we’ve cut petrol excise
duty by 25 cents a litre for three
months and we’ll shortly announce
equivalent reductions in road user
charges.
Half-price public transport fares will
also be in place for three months,
making getting to and from work
more affordable for many and giving
a great alternative to filling up the
tank.
These initiatives are part of our
broader programme to reduce
cost pressures, which includes a
suite of changes that will lift the
incomes of many Kiwis from 1
April. Improvements to Working for
Families alone will see around 60% of
all families better off by an average of
$20 per week. Students, seniors, and
minimum wage workers will also see
an income boost. The Winter Energy
Payment will also re-start on 1 May
to help with heating costs over winter.
There’s no silver bullet for the current
cost-of-living pressures, but these
measures will make a difference. They
build on actions we’ve taken since
2017 to ensure Kiwi families have
more in their pocket, like the family
tax credit, free school lunches, and
cheaper doctors’ fees.
We’re committed to securing a
recovery from COVID that leaves no
one behind – and supporting families
with the cost of living is just one way
we’re making that a reality.
Gym club on the hunt for new
premises with high ceiling
• By Fiona Ellis
LOW CEILINGS may be the
biggest challenge for young
gymnasts aiming to compete at
a national level.
THe Bishopdale-based Delta
Rhythmic Gymnastics club is
struggling to find a training
venue with a ceiling height of at
least 10ms.
THe sport involves throwing
hoops, ribbons and clubs high in
the air, carrying out movements
while the objects are airborne
and then catching them again as
part of a choreographed routine.
President Jo Walker said the
club had been hopping from
venue to venue since the
earthquake over a decade ago.
“It’s really hard, we’re just so
desperate now. We don’t really
know quite what to do,” Walker
said.
THe former New Zealand
Institute of Sport building on
Riccarton Rd had been a good
fit but was no longer an option.
“THat was bowled down at
the end of last year. That was
the only place we had that had a
really high ceiling.
“It was old but it was the
perfect height. That was bowled
over for housing, which is
completely devastating.”
THe club trained about 135
young gymnasts, about 52 of
whom were eligible to try out
for nationals, she said.
“THat means that they’re
senior kids, which means that
they need to throw high.”
THe club now operated
from Breens Intermediate
School, Fendalton Community
Centre, Middleton Grange
School, and Rolleston
Community Centre.
“None of these places have got
a ceiling that’s high enough for
our senior girls.
“We’ve asked the council and
it can’t give us anything.”
A warehouse, hanger or barn
would serve the purpose, she
said.
THe club members had been
gearing up to work from a
warehouse, but the arrangement
fell through, leaving them once
again searching for a venue.
This caused the training regime
In spite of the club’s size and
success in its field, she believed
it was not prioritised in the way
sports such as basketball were.
“It’s like the whole sport has
been forgotten, it’s like nobody
cares.”
However, she thought a good
location must exist somewhere
nearby and she remained
hopeful it would be found.
MORE THAN 250 people have
tied purple ribbons to a worry
wall as part of a public art
installation on Papanui Rd.
Priest Megan Herles-Mooar
said the All Souls Anglican
Church short-term installation
could help people deal with current
worries.
“We wanted to offer something
tactile that helps people
acknowledge and perhaps lessen
their worries about Omicron, the
war in Ukraine, and anything
else that is troubling them at
present,” Herles-Mooar said.
The wall is a series of
temporary wire fences on
which people can tie a length
of purple ribbon, which are
provided free.
Pedestrians were stopping to
find out what the bright purple
installation was all about, she
said.
All Souls
Church is
a way for
people to
offload some
of their
concerns.
Church’s worry wall
proving popular
“Not only can people take a
moment or two to offload their
cares but every day I and others
from the church pray for our
community and the world and
for peace – both global and
personal.
“The installation is showing
that all people, regardless of
faith, have a desperate desire for
peace and as such the wall is a
place to hopefully find that.”
“It’s amazing how the concept
attracts people’s attention and
appears to have struck a chord,”
she says.
The colour purple was chosen
for the ribbons because of
the association with Lent, the
reflective period in the church
calendar in the lead up to Easter,
the most important celebration
in the Christian calendar.
The wall installation is open to
the public until April 18.
Battle of the bridge: What’s in a name?
• By Emily Moorhouse
BURWOOD residents continue
to be frustrated over the lack
of action in naming a new
footbridge bridge over the Avon
River.
The bridge in the red zone area
near Briarmont St was opened
earlier this month.
But the city council continues
to call it the Avondale Bridge – in
spite of the long-time Avondale
Bridge connecting Avondale and
New Brighton Rds being only a few
hundred metres along the river.
The Pegasus Post reported on
residents’ concerns in November,
but still there has been no action
from the city council.
In a recent article on the city
council’s Newsline website, the
new footbridge was again called
the Avondale Bridge
future, once a co-governance “We thought it would be great
Association secretary Gae Johns: “An official naming process forward some ideas and then a
“It just doesn’t make sense, how will be carried out as part of decision was made by them and
down the road.”
Johns said BERA had passed the community board because
Johns said the bridge should name suggestions on to the I think they would be the best
because there might be
it officially opened or even been Board but as the association was
opened to the public, and then fairly small, they wanted to see people from Avondale that have
had an official opening with a community engagement.
some suggestions because it’s on
name at a later date.
One suggestion was naming both sides of the river.”
Johns said the community
Andrew Rutledge said the
“Avondale Bridge” could possibly on the river bank near Bassett St with BERA’s thinking and she
FRUSTRATION: The new pedestrian bridge being called the “Avondale Bridge” has caused confusion among residents
because it’s also the name of the road bridge that links Avondale Rd to the New Brighton Rd/Bassett St roundabout.
agree that referring to it as the
Avondale bridge is “not ideal.”
“They seem open to the idea
of investigating a new name for
it anyway which is really good,”
Johns said.
Burwood Ward city councillor
Phil Mauger said he was disappointed
the bridge wasn’t named
before it’s official opening.
“It seems a bit silly that we
know the bridge has been coming
for five years...we weren’t
on top of it,” Mauger said. “It is
disappointing.”
“The Avondale Bridge just
causes confusion, it is a bridge in
Avondale,” he said. “It’s not the
Mauger said the BERA was
keen to name the bridge after a
was a fantastic idea.
He said the Coastal-Burwood
Community Board will also
probably suggest some names
and have a discussion about it.
“I’m totally open it’s up to the
residents of the area to be happy,”
he said. “I’ll agree to any name
they’re happy with no problem.”
Mauger also noted that there
will be two other bridges opening
soon, being the Snell and
Medway and wondered if these
were also yet to be named.
How To Arrange Throw Pillows Like A Pro
There’s some science behind decorating with throw pillows like a pro. For this purpose,
it’s essential that you review some general rules first:
• Start with the largest pillow and go from largest to smallest one as you work your
way towards the centre of the couch
• Odd numbers are visually more interesting.
• Place a lumbar size or round pillow at the centre to create additional depth and
dimension.
Colours and textures
The key for your throw pillows to look like they were styled by an interior designer is
knowing how to play with colours and textures. When picking colours for your throw
pillows, first you want to identify the colour or colours that stand out in the room. This
could be the colour of an accent wall, the colour of a piece of art, or an accent piece like
a couch or chair. You want to incorporate this colour (s) in your throw pillows to some
degree as you don’t want to outshine the item you have identified. Rather, you want
to highlight it and/or complement it with the addition of throw pillows. This will bring
cohesiveness and harmony into the room with very little effort. You want to mix and
match colours and patterns. So once you identify what your main colour is, you want to
find other colours that will complement your colour scheme. This can be either a colour
of the same family or colours that contrast each other but still look good when paired
together. You want to mix and match colours and patterns. So once you identify what
your main colour is, you want to find other colours that will complement your colour
scheme. This can be either a colour of the same family or colours that contrast each other
but still look good when paired together. The same concept applies when mixing different
textures. In this case, you want to pair colours of the same hue. For example, different
shades of blue in different textures such as faux fur, leather, chunky wool, and linen are
not just visually appealing, but they also create dimension and add interest. When using
the same textures, we recommend playing with different prints and styles. Throw pillows
are probably one of the most versatile home decor pieces you can work with. They add
dimension, texture, and can really tie the room together. You don’t just choose them to
create more comfortable spaces, but to highlight or complement colours and to bring
about visual interest. The throw pillows that you choose can really make or break a room
so it’s important that you learn tips and tricks on how to decorate with throw pillows like
a designer!
So what do you have to supply in a rental
property vs what should you supply?
I deal with a lot of kiwis who are first time
investors, and I often get asked what they
are expected to supply as a landlord, and
although there is certainly legislation
around this, I like to respond with not
only what they must supply, but what will
make the property a better home for their
tenants. You may be surprised to know
that a landlord does not have to supply
window coverings. However it seems
obvious that a tenant will require curtains/
drapes or blinds for both privacy and
warmth.This leaves two options, either
the landlord supplies them at their cost
and then they ‘belong’ to the property, or
if the tenant is required to provide them
then clearly they will own them and have
the right to remove them at the conclusion
of their tenancy. It is quite common for
a tenant to replace an existing curtain
in their home should they wish to, they
simply store the landlord’s ones and rehang
them before they leave, but should
they really be expected to pay for the
whole house? I guess it comes down to
this. What would you expect if you were
a tenant? I think we are likely to agree
that window coverings are a no-brainer!
Another thing to consider is a washing line.
Again, not necessarily a requirement for
a landlord to supply, but that leaves the
door wide open for only internal drying
using clothes driers or drying racks, both
of which can cause extra dampness inside
a property. Once again – the benefit of
installing a clothesline will far outweigh
the cost. Then there is the debate around
TV aerials, what if your tenants don’t have
digital TV? Another difficult one. Landlords
are not required to supply one, but will
that result in the tenant having to install,
and ultimately removing at the end of their
tenancy causing potential damages? The
rules surrounding all of these chattels is
however, that if they are supplied as part
of the tenancy then they are required
to be maintained during the tenancy by
the landlord if necessary, but if a tenant
accepts the property without them then
the landlord is not required to supply.
Overall in my opinio, a tenant should be
able to expect these basic things in their
home supplied by their landlords, it is not,
I believe too much to ask, and will go a
long way to having happy and respectful
tenants.
