“I’m super stoked with my
results, it couldn’t have gone
any better,” she said.
“It was so much fun getting to
race all those girls and being a
REPORTED GRAFFITI in the
eastern suburbs took a drop
during February.
Latest statistics show the
Coastal Ward had a 48 per cent
decrease in reported graffiti,
while the Burwood Ward showed
a 20 per cent decrease and the
Linwood Ward a 21 per cent
decrease.
Coastal Ward
councillor Celeste
Donovan said
it was hard to
predict these kind
of trends as often
this activity was
opportunistic.
“The number
of reports is not a
representation of
Celeste
Donovan
the amount of graffiti, more, how
active the citizens are,” she said.
“One piece of graffiti could be
reported by numerous citizens.”
City council head of community
support and partnerships John
Filsell said the volunteers who
monitor graffiti are currently on
stand-down due to Covid, which
could affect how much graffiti was
reported.
Donovan said across the
Coastal Ward there has been
great participation by schools,
businesses and community
groups taking ownership of the
tagging areas.
Battle of the bridge: What’s in a name?
• By Emily Moorhouse
BURWOOD residents continue
to be frustrated over the lack
of action in naming a new
footbridge bridge over the Avon
River.
The bridge in the red zone area
near Briarmont St was opened
earlier this month.
But the city council continues
to call it the Avondale Bridge – in
spite of the long-time Avondale
Bridge connecting Avondale and
New Brighton Rds being only a few
hundred metres along the river.
The Pegasus Post reported on
residents’ concerns in November,
but still there has been no action
from the city council.
In a recent article on the city
council’s Newsline website, the
new footbridge was again called
the Avondale Bridge
Said Burwood East Residents
Association secretary Gae Johns:
“It just doesn’t make sense, how
ridiculous having a brand new
bridge and naming it the same
as one that already exists 200m
down the road.”
Johns said the bridge should
have been given a name before
it officially opened or even been
opened to the public, and then
had an official opening with a
name at a later date.
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said the
“Avondale Bridge” could possibly
receive another name in the
FRUSTRATION: The new pedestrian bridge being called the “Avondale Bridge” has caused confusion among residents
because it’s also the name of the road bridge that links Avondale Rd to the New Brighton Rd/Bassett St roundabout.
future, once a co-governance
model is in place.
“An official naming process
will be carried out as part of
this, and we’ll engage with both
the community board and local
community,” Rutledge said.
Johns said BERA had passed
name suggestions on to the
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board but as the association was
fairly small, they wanted to see
community engagement.
One suggestion was naming
it after Amelia Rogers, a postmistress
at a post office located
on the river bank near Bassett St
from the 1890s.
“We thought it would be great
if the community could put
forward some ideas and then a
decision was made by them and
that the community board run
that,” Johns said.
“We wanted it to come from
the community board because
I think they would be the best
to manage it,” she said. “Particularly
because there might be
people from Avondale that have
some suggestions because it’s on
both sides of the river.”
Johns said the community
board seemed to be on board
with BERA’s thinking and she
thinks most of the members
agree that referring to it as the
Avondale bridge is “not ideal.”
“They seem open to the idea
of investigating a new name for
it anyway which is really good,”
Johns said.
Burwood Ward city councillor
Phil Mauger said he was disappointed
the bridge wasn’t named
before it’s official opening.
“It seems a bit silly that we
know the bridge has been coming
for five years...we weren’t
on top of it,” Mauger said. “It is
disappointing.”
“The Avondale Bridge just
causes confusion, it is a bridge in
Avondale,” he said. “It’s not the
Mauger said the BERA was
keen to name the bridge after a
local identity, which he thought
was a fantastic idea.
He said the Coastal-Burwood
Community Board will also
probably suggest some names
and have a discussion about it.
“I’m totally open it’s up to the
residents of the area to be happy,”
he said. “I’ll agree to any name
they’re happy with no problem.”
Mauger also noted that there
will be two other bridges opening
soon, being the Snell and
Medway and wondered if these
were also yet to be named.
A male lab cross pup around
An 11-year-old male
urging owners to come forward
to collect these dogs from the
animal shelter.
• By Emily Moorhouse
IT’S EASY to feel alone and
disconnected when completing
self-isolation, but a 21-year-old
software developer has plans to
change that.
Peter Saffarian has done his
part to keep people connected
to others in their area through
developing a website to assist
people going through selfisolation.
Saffarian was inspired to start
the website after overhearing a
conversation between two people
at a church.
One expressed concern to
the other that if they had to self
isolate they wouldn’t have anyone
to help them in any way, as
Covid case numbers continued
to rise.
Saffarian, of Prestons, heard
the other person offer to help if
they were needed, which made
him realise that not everyone
had somebody close to them to
provide support while isolating.
“This sparked a concern in my
mind that while some of us are
blessed enough to have a circle
of family and friends around to
support us if and when we have
to self-isolate, there are many of
us who don’t,” he said.
“Yet if locals know that there
is a person in their reach who
needs help most people would be
happy to help.”
After hearing that conversation
Saffarian spoke to his team
KIWI KINDNESS: Peter Saffarian, 21, started Jobi as a
way to keep people self-isolating connected with their
community.
straight away and pitched his
idea of starting a website that
connected people with others
close-by to provide support and
assistance.
“No one hesitated that this is
something that our communities
need and we saw it as our
responsibility to make Jobi available
as soon as possible so we got
to work straight away,” he said.
After a week of long working
hours and a couple of all-nighters
Jobi was up and running.
Saffarian and his team are
still working on adding features
and improving the website but
wanted to make the platform
available as soon as possible during
the peak of Covid cases.
The website is free to access
and has two options to register
under, “volunteer” or “isolating”.
If you register as a “volunteer”
you will be notified when there
are people self-isolating in your
area and you can provide assistance
like talking with them or
getting them essentials.
If you register as “isolating”
you will be connected with people
near you to let them know
what kind of support you need.
Saffarian, originally from
Iran, said the whole concept is
based on neighbours helping
each other and relying on kiwi
kindness.
“This February marked four
years of my arrival in Aotearoa
New Zealand and I have seen
nothing but kindness and support
from Kiwis,” Saffarian said.
“I see this as an opportunity to
give back what I’ve received.”
Saffarian said the website has
already received great feedback
from the public and community
organisations as it continues to
grow.
“We have had people telling us
that Jobi helps them have a sense
of hope, purpose and usefulness
as it gives them an opportunity
to support one another,” Saffarian
said.
“A lot of people want to help
but it’s hard to find how and
that’s our role to help find that
how.”
Saffarian said he wanted Jobi
to act as a magnet that brings
people together to support one
another through these tough
times.
“I believe the fact that people
are sharing it with their friends
and joining at this rate is an
indicator of the real impact
that we can have if we all work
together.”
A VOLUNTEER-RUN fitness
club aimed at removing barriers
to fitness for lower-income
families is turning to the
community for help to keep their
Fitclub at the Hub needs to
raise $7500 to cover their share
of overheads or “rent” at the
Phillipstown Community Hub
where the club is based.
If they don’t raise funds, the
club won’t be viable as a “bricks
the group would have to
leave their place at the Hub.
Fitclub at the Hub manager
Carly McCall said the club has
grown in popularity since opening
Young track cyclist
racks up six golds
DOWN: Reported graffiti in the eastern suburbs
plummeted during February. PHOTOS: STAR MEDIA
Grafitti drops in
latest report
• From page 1
“The council graffiti team have
done a very good job of laying the
groundwork as part of their education
programme and I believe
this is paying off,” she said.
Donovan said she has noticed a
“general improvement” across the
Coastal Ward with a lot of effort
going into the beautification of
spaces by members of the community,
local businesses, volunteers,
and city council staff.
She said as report numbers rise,
so would the amount of graffiti
removed.
“It is expected that citizens will
become more active [report more
graffiti] as isolation numbers
decrease,” she said.
“I would encourage people to
continue reporting any issues
through Snap Send and Solve,
or by calling or emailing the
council, as this is the best way to
get a good insight into any trends
and to tackle this quickly”.
• From page 1
Canterbury Track Cycling
coach Terry Gyde said when
training with the Papanui High
School student, she had reached
speeds he would expect of his
elite cyclists.
“It was a surprise for everybody
else, but I kind of had an inkling.”
However, he kept quiet so as not
to pressure her with expectations
as they prepared for nationals.
“People like that come probably
once a decade, once a generation.
She’s certainly opened a lot of
eyes.”
Fellow coach Hamish Ferguson
said it was very unusual to see a
total clean sweep of the grade.
“Her performance is
extraordinary, especially for
somebody who only started
track cycling in our junior
development programme a few
months ago.”
This was especially impressive
given that most of her experience
was on outdoor tracks, he said.
“She’s been training hard and
racing hard at Denton Park, but
to know how to race tactically
on the indoor velodrome is
amazing.”
Shaylah opened a stunning
campaign in the under-15
division on day one with victories
WINNER: Shaylah Sayers (centre) after claiming the
under-15 girls elimination race title.
in the elimination race and 500m
time trial.
She also topped the podium in
the points race, derby and scratch
race before combining with Lizzy
Thomson to claim the 500m team
sprint title during last Saturday’s
final day of competition.
Shaylah’s father Laurie Sayers,
who accompanied his daughter to
the nationals, said it was amazing
to watch her do so well.
“The first one was a bit of a
shock, and she just followed on
from it,” he said.
Although she had only been
track cycling for a short time,
she had been mountain biking
with her father from a young age,
Shaylah told Pegasus Post earlier
this month.
Her father also recalled taking
her on bike rides when she was
small, in which she struggled to
keep up.
“Then she got older and she just
took off, now I can’t keep up
with her.”
I want to thank our whānau for all the support
we have received as a kura over the past month!
It has been a really challenging time for us all as
COVID continues to bite. A wise person once
said, “We can’t always control the challenging
things that happen to us, but we can always
control how we respond to those challenging
things.” I am very proud of our ākonga, kaimahi
and community and the way that as a collective
we have responded to these unprecedented
times!
Whānau will be aware that over the past three
weeks we have had to change the way we do
things in order to avoid having to close the kura.
We introduced Plan A, then moved to Plan B
and we are currently working within Plan C.
Each plan has been implemented to cope with
the changes we have faced as more and more
of our kaimahi and ākonga have tested positive
for Omicron. Our key focus at this time is on
keeping our kura open so ākonga have access to
kaimahi and learning resources. It is so important
that we are able to keep everyone safe and well.
While learning may look slightly different at this
time, be assured learning is occurring and our
ākonga are taking every opportunity offered
to them. Please take the time to talk with your
ākonga about how they are feeling and what
they are thinking. If you have concerns please
ring their Puna Ako kaiako/teacher for a chat.
The Hauora team are also available if whānau
wish to discuss any concerns they may have.
A year from now we will look back at the
challenges we faced during the pandemic and we
will know that our response ensured our ākonga
and their learning needs were our key priority.
What 2021 taught us was that our ākonga cope
well with adversity and do not let the challenges
they face overwhelm them.
Haeata Celebrates International Pi Day on 14th of March
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14)
around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is
the symbol used in Mathematics to represent
a constant - the ratio of the circumference
of a circle to its diameter - which is
approximately 3.14159. Our Y1-13 ākonga
participated in our very first Pi Day through
different Maths activities this past Monday
to demonstrate their understanding of this
number. It was great to see our rangatahi
learning Mathematics through fun, handson
activities and seeing how Mathematics
connects to our daily lives and is visible in
objects around our kura.
Years 9 and 10 collaborated on this
decorated it with symbols, patterns
Creamy chicken dishes without a big clean-up
4 cloves garlic, crushed
3 cups chicken broth
Minor amendment to the enrolment scheme
of Haeata Community Campus
The Ministry of Education is proposing a minor amendment to
the enrolment scheme of Haeata Community Campus. This is to
add their Te Reo Māori special programme, Kōmanawa, to their
enrolment scheme.
Students who meet the criteria for enrolment and live within the
home zone must be enrolled ahead of out of zone students. Out
of zone students who meet the criteria for enrolment in the
special programme have priority in enrolment above all other out
of zone students while special programme places are available.
The enrolment of out of zone students is governed by the
provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
A copy of the proposed enrolment scheme is available at
https://consultation.education.govt.nz/education/haeatacommunity-college-special-programme
Comments can be made to
