Style Magazine - April 2022
As part of our “spring forward” lineup (and I’ve got to apologize here for all the very cheesy spring puns) we’ve got budding stars (“5 Top Teens,” page 18), sports to bring a spring in your step (“Spring Forth,” page 32), some lively seasonal performances (“In the Spotlight,” page 24), and even an extra boost of flower power (Editor’s Picks, page 47). Not to mention, all the yummy eats—including some scrumptious Easter brunch recipes (“Easter Feast,” page 86). To top it off, after two years of uncertainty, we’ve finally brought back our Calendar of Events (page 30) and couldn’t be more thrilled that there’s so much happening in our neighborhoods. However you spend this season, make sure to celebrate it. Celebrate new life, new opportunities, and even new challenges. It’s good to be alive and let’s not forget it. Last year, I celebrated April with an indoor spring-themed photoshoot for my daughter, Aria. This year, I’m going to try doing the same thing—but outdoors. My daughter and I are also going to be soaking up the sunshine, picking wildflowers, and listening to birds sing. My co-editor, Emily, is sure to be bonding outdoors with her two beautiful dogs, Goldie and Turtle. Here’s to a new season and new adventures of every kind. Speaking of “new” our sorely missed editor in chief, Megan, welcomed sweet baby girl Phoebe Rose in February. From what we know, they’re thoroughly enjoying the warm weather and each other. Happy spring, happy Easter, and happy days to you all! —Tara Mendanha tara@stylemg.com

Ithink our April issue of STYLE is best encapsulated in a Shakespearean quote:
“April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” In the pages to come, you’ll find a
smattering of youth, a fondness for April,
and a whole lot of spirit.
Admittedly, we might have gotten a
little spring-heavy with this issue but
we have no regrets. Having been in
hibernation the last few months has made us
want to look forward to brighter (literally and
figuratively) and better things. And what better
than spring to bring about that joie de vivre?

Goldie
back our Calendar of Events (page 30) and couldn’t
be more thrilled that there’s so much happening
in our neighborhoods.
Among all these goodies, is a stellar feature
article by Ryan Martinez. The yoga instructor,
outdoor expert, and overall nice guy takes us
on a detailed journey of all the awe-inspiring
adventures to be

What’s the best
prank someone’s
pulled on you/you’ve
pulled on someone?
“I’d called my aunt and left a message
pretending to be the Zodiac Killer. This
was way after the supposed suspect
had died, but she was definitely
spooked by it—especially since they
never caught him. I told her it was me
and we all had a good laugh, but I think
my mom and I found the most joy in it!”
—Emily Peter-Corey
“We’d found a rattlesnake on the side of the house
and Wendy freaked out. A few days later,
she had to go outside to the car to get
something. Sensing the opportunity at
hand, I hid behind a pillar near our front
door. When I heard her approaching,
I started shaking a pepper grinder I
had. Well, let’s just say the jumping and
screaming were a sight to behold. At
some point, I may get out of the doghouse
but we both still laugh about it!”
—Terry Carroll
“My brother and cousin decided to go out. I locked
the front door behind them and waited, when
strange things began happening. The TV
suddenly started blaring, lights and fans
turned on, and a balcony door was now
ajar. I was ready to run for my life when
the boys appeared out of nowhere,
hysterically laughing. They’d climbed
our two-storied house, snuck in while I
wasn’t looking, and began wreaking havoc
on my mind!”
—Tara Mendanha
“I think the prank that I’m most fond of was one
I did on my Art Director, Gary. He went on
vacation for a week around Christmas
a few years ago. I and a couple others
from work individually wrapped
everything in his office with wrapping
paper—everything! His desk, chair,
computers, keyboards, all his computer
chords, and even his wall clock.
Because, who says work isn't a gift? Love
yah, Gary!”—Ray Burgess
“The gym I go to pulled a prank on me on April
Fool’s Day, 2017. They put about 300 signs
in my yard, all with faces on it of the one
politician I do not support. They put big
posters of me on my garage doors and
replaced by husband’s face with this
politician's face and his arm around me.
Cars kept driving by and taking photos. It
took hours to remove! I will retaliate one of
these days!”—Debra Linn
“So, the hubster knew I had a rough day and this
is what he brings me—the new People
Magazine's “Sexiest Man Alive” issue.
Yes, I do think he's the sexiest man alive
so I LOVE this cover—along with an
8TB hard drive he got me. I'm such a
geek that I was beyond excited to have
an 8TB hard drive! When the Sunday
ads come out, the first thing I'm looking
at are deals on hard drives. So, does my
man know me, or what? Thank you, baby!
Xoxo”—Wendy Sipple

THE ROAD BEAT
In this month’s “The Road Beat”
column, auto aficionado and local
resident Mitchell Weitzman takes
the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
for a spin and shares his honest
review. “Personally, I completely dig
the lunar rover aesthetic of it, with
sharp, upswept angular creases, and
a large, smiling mouth decorated
with sweet LED lighting,” is just
a sneak peak of what he has to
say about the uniquely designed
pickup truck.

by CAITLIN MCCULLOCH
Although they’ve recently been faced with numerous
challenges, these local teens continue to go above and
beyond—achieving, striving, and thriving. Say hello to
some of our future movers and shakers.
Riya Tapadiya
Senior at Woodcreek
High School
As the captain of Woodcreek High
School’s speech and debate team, Riya
was recently named an Academic All-
American—the first female to hold this
honor at her school in 27 years.
“This is an award that any competitive
honor society can give out and you have to
get 750 competitive points,” she explains.
“You also have to get recommended by
your coach and merit of character goes
into it. I’ve been working towards this goal
for quite a while now!”
Outside of school and extracurricular
activities, Riya has snagged an internship
as a legal clerk at a law firm. She plans to
pursue a career as a lawyer.
“I’m open to different areas of law;
ultimately, I want to be able to help
people,” she says.

Nico Nielsen
Senior at Woodcreek High School
Nico has played basketball, football, and volleyball for
years, with volleyball being his current focus.
“I’ve been playing volleyball since I was in 7th grade. My
favorite thing about the sport is traveling and meeting
new people along the way,” he shares.
For the past eight years, this tremendous student
athlete has found a way to combine both sports and
charity work for his community.
“I ran an event during my birthday each year
(December 21) where I would host sporting
tournaments of some sort,” he says. “In order to
participate, I would ask my friends to bring an
unwrapped toy that would eventually be donated to
foster kids for Christmas. Over eight years, I’ve been
able to raise about 800 presents for foster kids.”
Though some of his sporting endeavors may be coming
to an end, Nico plans to continue helping others.
“Ideally, I would want to attend Cal Poly and study
kinesiology in hopes of pursuing a career in physical
therapy,” he says.

Tyler Tremain
Senior at Folsom High School
Tyler started playing football at the age of eight
and it’s a sport he’s very passionate about.
“I love the competition and competitiveness that
every day brings,” he says. “I always want to be the
best and football is a sport to make you work for
everything you want. I was always told that what I
put in is what I’m going to get out of it.”
That hard work has paid off. As the varsity
quarterback and 2021 NorCal Football Player
of the Year, Tyler led his team to victory over
notorious winners De La Salle, putting Folsom High
School into the state championship game. Still, he
credits team effort for their victory.
“The De La Salle game is by far the most
memorable game I’ve played,” he says. “Just to be
able to say we beat them is crazy. Coach Doherty
called an amazing game and our whole team did
their job.”
Aside from playing on the football field, Tyler has
maintained a 4.0 GPA and we haven’t seen the end
of his academic or football careers yet.
“As far as what I’m doing next year, I do plan to play
football,” he says. “I just don’t know where yet!”

Sophomore at Oak Ridge High School
After the past few years, mental health has been
a struggle for many—especially students. Lauryn
Sumimoto—Vice Chair of the Youth Commission in El
Dorado Hills and a teen voice in situations where adult
decisions are being made—is doing something about it.
“Because of COVID-19, mental health is a key issue we’re
facing for youth,” she says. “We try to do things like
wristbands, books, and a mental health week to bring
awareness. We have a lot of resources but students being
aware of them is an issue.”
Aside from her community work with mental health, Lauryn
is her class’s vice president. She also is the parliamentary
captain for speech and debate along with being the
science president for the Science Olympiad at Oak Ridge.
“For my mental health, I’m only doing things that I really

Alyssa “Ally” Salerno
2021 graduate from
Woodcreek High School
When Ally was 10 years old, she developed a
curious bald spot on the back of her head. She was
diagnosed with Alopecia areata, an autoimmune
disorder that goes after hair follicles.
Fast-forward seven years and Ally began to
experience a great deal of hair loss. Stress can
trigger this—and the pandemic was a likely
trigger. She was left about 70% bald, in denial, and
frustrated.
Then, Ally made a change this past September 1st,
which is Alopecia Awareness Day.
“I wanted to turn the negative feeling I felt into a
positive one by writing a children's book to teach
about Alopecia areata and normalize it,” she says.
Ally’s book, Alisha & Alopecia can be purchased by
visiting the link on her Instagram (@allysalerno), at

4 Seasonal Sports To Try
by KOURTNEY JASON
Spring is nature’s way of telling us to get outside. So,
why not head outdoors and try a new sport this season?
No matter the activity, sports have a variety of health
benefits—from better sleep, improving cardiovascular
health, and burning calories to building endurance,
improving balance and coordination, reducing stress,
and improving mental health—according to Sandra T.
Montgomery, CPRE, Recreation Superintendent at El
Dorado Hills Community Services District.
Read on to get the play-by-play of where to enjoy a
game of pickleball, softball, and more!
District (eldoradohillscsd.org) offers a variety of
pickleball opportunities in the form of indoor
lessons and drop-ins at the CSD Gymnasium,
says Montgomery.
To meet the growing demand and interest
in the sport, Spare Time Sports Clubs
(sparetimesportsclubs.com) recently expanded
its pickleball facilities and programming in the
Sacramento region.
The centerpiece of this expansion has been
the construction of a 24-court pickleball facility
at Johnson Ranch Sports Club in Roseville,
according to Mark Tappan, Spare Time’s
Corporate Director of Operations. Johnson
Ranch converted seven tennis courts to 24
lighted pickleball courts. The construction
started earlier this year and is open to the
public for play this spring.
The size and scope of the new facility
will allow for major regional and national
tournaments to host competitions in Roseville.
Tappan said they also plan to develop a youth
pickleball program to go along with the adult
program as well as interclub leagues to promote
level-specific competitive play. In addition,
Spare Time will expand the pickleball program
to 6-10 courts at a number of its other local
clubs in Sacramento, Elk Grove, and Folsom.
GOLF
Many things have been said about the
game of golf. Shawn Kelly, a golf professional
at The Ridge Golf Course & Events Center in
Auburn (ridgegc.com), says it’s the best sport to
play for a lifetime. “You [get to be] outdoors in
some of the most beautiful places on earth,”
he says. “You can share rounds with family

PICKLEBALL
One of the fastest growing court sports in America,
pickleball is a cross between tennis, badminton, and table
tennis. The game helps to improve reflexes and balance,
and is played on a court that’s 44 feet long and 20 feet
wide. With rules similar to tennis, it’s also easy to learn for
players of all ages and levels of play.

and friends or make new friends.
Golf is available to everyone, from
the most athletic to those who are
physically challenged. The sport
can be the most frustrating or
exhilarating—a variety of emotions
all in the same day.”
Ken Morton, Jr. is the vice
president of retail and marketing
at Morton Golf Management,
LLC, which oversees Haggin Oaks
Golf Complex, Bing Maloney
Golf Course, Bartley Cavanaugh
Golf Course, and William Land
Golf Course. He says the Greater
Sacramento region has some
of the very best public courses
available anywhere in the country.
“There’s great diversity in layouts,
great values in pricing, and a large
number of courses nearby,” he says.
The Ridge offers golf lessons
for everyone including beginners
to the most experienced players.
Haggin Oaks’ Northern California
Institute of Golf (hagginoaks.com)
has dozens of different lesson
programs for all-level golfers. “We
host PGA and First Tee junior golf
programming, have women’s golf
ambassadors running womencentric
leagues, and do more adult
class lesson programming than any
other facility in the United States,”
says Morton.
As an outdoor sport, you’ll
get to enjoy the weather and get
exercise as you move about the
green. “Most golfers can walk miles
during a round,” says Kelly. “The
motion of golf uses many muscles
in the body, including your mind
while strategizing and focusing on
the course and swing.” Morton says
walking 18 holes is the equivalent
of walking four to six miles and it
is the ultimate socially distanced
sport. “Golf is great for mental health.
It gets you Vitamin D from the sun,
reduces anxiety, can be great for
blood pressure, gets you to exercise,
builds friendships, enhances brain
stimulation, and improves balance,”
he says.
SOFTBALL
If you’re looking for a team sport,
check out adult softball in El Dorado
Hills. The CSD offers adult softball
leagues in spring, summer, and fall,
and each team will have a roster of
15-16 players.
Montgomery says men’s games
are played on Tuesday or Thursday
evenings, and co-ed games are
played on Wednesday evenings
at Promontory Community Park.
You can register as a team and
championship T-shirts are provided
by the CSD for the winning team.
Team sports are great for
improving communication, fostering
teamwork, boosting self-esteem, and
building leaders.
BOCCE BALL
Bocce, also known as Italian lawn
bowling, is one of the most widely
played games in the world and is one
of the oldest lawn or yard games.
Grab four friends (for a team of five
players) and head to El Dorado Hills
for a game of bocce ball. Montgomery
says the CSD offers a Bocce Ball
League (registration required) on
Tuesdays and Wednesdays during
the spring, summer, and fall months.
Games are played at Promontory
Community Park, which has four
lighted bocce ball courts. The CSD
also has bocce ball courts available for
open play to the public at Lake Forest
Park. According to Montgomery, the
upcoming Heritage Village Park will
feature brand new bocce ball courts
for the community.

Bear
Encounters
While they may seem
cute to some and
terrifying to others,
understanding how to
react when you see a
bear in the wilderness
is important. Keep in
mind, black bears very
rarely attack.
1
Grab any small children
immediately. Keep them
close so they don’t make
any sudden movements
and trigger an attack.
2
Make your presence known.
Begin speaking calmly and
help the bear identify you
as human by stretching out
your arms and waving them
slowly.
3
Make yourself look big.
By making yourself seem
large bears are even more
unlikely to attack.
4
Hold your ground.
Occasionally, a bear may
“Bluff Charge.” Hold your
ground and make loud
noises. Running away will
trigger the bear to attack.
5
Move away slowly. Once
the bear recognizes you,
begin to slowly move away.
Walk sideways. If the bear
follows, hold your ground,
make yourself look large,
and make loud noises.

Bear Bakery
MICHAELLE PAK
Fair Oaks, 916-337-8480, @themommabearbakery
Services or products you offer: The Momma Bear
Bakery is a home-based cottage food bakery
that specializes in pastries for mom and baby,
taking local kids from breast to the best sweet
treat! Our Booby Bites are homemade lactation
support cookies and brownies full of milk
boosting galactagogues specifically made with
breastfeeding mothers in mind. When your milkloving
kid gets older, we’re here to give them their
first taste of cake with custom-made smash cakes.
What you enjoy most about your profession: I
enjoy the creative freedom in designing each
customer’s order.
Fun fact about your company: After 17 years
working in restaurants all over Sacramento and
El Dorado County, I’ve officially been in business
for myself for a year and it feels amazing! I do
it all myself right now but I’m planning on
expanding within the next year.
First job: My first job was at my best friend’s
mom’s bakery packaging orders and ringing up
customers. One of the cake decorators called in
one morning and I got the opportunity to learn
how to decorate—and the rest is history!
Favorite food: I could live on tacos! If my
husband and I can’t decide where to eat I
just say, “You know if I pick we’re eating tacos
somewhere!”
Last big purchase: I finally outgrew my little
chest freezer and bought a commercial freezer.
When not working, you can find me: Spending
time with my family.
You love living here because: We can camp in the
mountains one day, by the ocean the next, and
even camp in the desert by a hot spring without
leaving the state.

ASK THE
EXPERT
by EMILY PETER-COREY
Q: WHAT IS A MARITAL
SETTLEMENT
AGREEMENT?
A: A marital settlement
agreement is a legally binding
contract wherein the parties
to a dissolution of marriage or
a legal separation have made
certain agreements on how to
split their assets and debts,
including retirement, if any. It
will also generally lay out any
provisions that relate to child
support and/or spousal support.
At times, if the parties have
agreed to an attorney's fees
provision, this contract may
also include provisions for this
as well. Furthermore, if the
parties' have minor children
there will also be provisions for
custody and visitation. This is a
legally binding contract and is
enforceable both under family
law principles as well as, typically,
underneath civil law.

Forever Home
Home
Renovation
that Stands the
Test of Time
by KOURTNEY JASON
Cathy Tonks’ passion and love for design,
color, fabrics, and texture stems from
her first career in the bridal industry.
That love translated to interior design
after she and her husband launched a
construction company.
In 2005, after obtaining a degree
in interior design, Tonks opened her
firm Designs With You in Mind Inc.
(designswithyouinmind.net), specializing
in design-build projects. The Granite Baybased
full-service custom luxury interior
design studio guides clients through
the interior design journey to bring the
perfect look to their home. “With our
turnkey custom design solutions, clients
don’t have to worry about finding or
dealing with contractors or movers. We
take care of all the details,” she says.
Kitchens and baths are her passion
and she’s been able to use her experience
in the construction industry to her
advantage. Tonks partners with VA
Construction’s Vitaliy Shvets on most
construction projects and the outcomes
are always impressive.
With our turnkey custom design solutions, clients don’t have
to worry about finding or dealing with contractors or movers.
We take care of all the details.
““
THE BRIEF
Homeowners Laura and Fred LeBlanc
hired Tonks and her DWYIM team
after they had to dismiss a contractordesigner
who did not share their
vision. “It all started when our builtin
wall microwave failed; it shared a
common control panel with the wall
oven,” they share. “These units were
original to the 30-year-old home and
parts were not available. Given that the
oven was a 27-inch unit, we wanted a
larger double-wall oven.”

As the LeBlancs considered how to
renovate their kitchen, they realized
they didn’t want to make the changes
the designer was suggesting. “He
wanted to blow out the exterior walls
and increase the square footage of the
home, which was something we did
not want to do,” they recount.
Upon meeting Tonks, they knew
it was a perfect partnership. “Cathy
listened to our ideas and asked us
what worked and what did not in the
existing space,” they share. “Since
extraordinarily little worked and
we wanted a more open plan, it was
decided to remove several interior
walls and achieve the open floor plan
we had dreamed of. Cathy was able to
achieve our dream space!”
The LeBlanc’s wanted a full gutting
of the kitchen and master bathroom.
In the kitchen, they wanted an updated
space featuring an open concept, using
high-end appliances and materials.
They asked for increased functionality
and use of space, and more functional
storage. In the master bathroom,
they wanted an updated space with
high-end materials, including a freestanding
tub, makeup vanity, and
curbless shower.

GETTING TO WORK
Once the plans were made, Tonks and her team jumped into
action. “We broke the project into two parts, with the kitchen
being the first priority and then the bathroom,” says Tonks. “The
kitchen renovation took our construction team around four
months from demo to completion.” When DWYIM completed
the kitchen, they started the bathroom a few months later to give
the LeBlancs a break from construction. The master bathroom
project took around eight weeks to complete.
The kitchen renovation started with a complete gutting,
removing all walls surrounding the kitchen. They added
an easy-to-access wine fridge which is also a great option
for storing snacks so the kids can grab something without
interrupting the flow of a kitchen. “Having an open concept
allows views across the main living spaces from the kitchen and
dining to the living room, and is especially great for those with
young children or for entertaining guests,” Tonks says.
They removed the existing windows in the back of the house,
replacing it with a large 12’ French door slider, providing easier
access to the backyard and created a more indoor-outdoor feel
to the space.
The master bathroom was also a complete gut. It now
features a petite tub. “Laura had originally wanted a very large
tub but after I suggested the ‘sit test,’ she got in and quickly
realized the larger tub was not for her!” says Tonks. Enlarging

the water closet and adding the curbless
shower creates an aging-in-place
environment, along with the addition
of appropriate bracing for grab bars
and future grab bar needs. “The beams
brought in a warm feel to the space that
we repeated from the main living space,”
Tonks says. “The bathroom was originally
designed with no door to the space. So,
FINAL RESULTS
With a stroke of luck and well-made
plans, the project did not encounter
any major setbacks. “I always say you
know when a plan is meant to be,’” says
Tonks. “Everything for the most part
went very smoothly. The only snafu was
the client trying to run low voltage wire
himself and falling through the ceiling
when we were not there. Luckily, he
was OK—thank goodness! I had to set
boundaries and he had to use the team
to help with those tasks.”
Most of all, the clients love their
renovated home. “The DWYIM team is
more than just the designers. Cathy
brings top-of-the-line craftspeople
to the job. Construction, plumbing,
electrical, tiling, and painting—all
are experts in their fields. The crews
worked neatly and quickly. We were
kept in the loop and we would use
the craftspeople again any day,” the
LeBlancs say. “We love our kitchen!
And we now have a master suite that is
just drop-dead gorgeous—one that will
allow us to age gracefully in place.”

HIKING
Albert Einstein was one of many influential thinkers who praised daily walks as
food for the mind. In fact, daily walks were sacred to Einstein, and many have
hailed walking as a conduit to greater creativity and problem solving.
Allowing your mind to focus on the simple task of moving one foot in front
of the other, rhythmically and without falling, allows the mind to forego more
cerebral efforts and enter a state of “transient hypofrontality.” This basically
means your brain slows down activities in certain areas resulting in better
problem-solving skills and greater peace of mind.
When you combine this with the intoxicating tonic of nature, you have a
soul-fueling reprieve from daily life. Take a moment to marvel at the sounds
of pine needles clashing, notice the quirky endeavors of a chipmunk, and the
elegance of a freshly blossomed wildflower, or just get your sweat on to the
rhythm of your own breath. Going on a hike will be the most fulfilling thing
you’ll do all weekend.
Where To Go
Mountains
Auburn Confluence
The Auburn Confluence is a
no-brainer if you live west of
Highway 49. There are so many
trails, beautiful views, and enough
elevation to really get your sweat
on and connect with the outdoors.
Take the Lake Clementine trail
beneath the Foresthill Bridge and up
to the dam. There’s a $10 day use
fee for parking at the Auburn State
Recreation Area entrance; open
from 7 a.m. till sunset.
South Lake Tahoe
South Lake Tahoe is one of the
most well-known areas in the
western United States, and the trails
will reflect this. Expect crowds, but
the world-class wilderness is worth
sharing and there are many lesserknown
trails that will provide you
plenty of solitude.
One trail that’s worth the crowds,
is Echo Lakes. This is a moderately
difficult, out-and-back trail that
follows two alpine lakes in the
gorgeous Desolation Wilderness.
With plenty of opportunities to
swim, paddle board, kayak, and
more, this area is definitely worth
a visit.
Donner Memorial State Park
There are many trails here, but one
of my favorites is the Donner Peak
Trail. The 3.8-mile, out-and-back hike
to the summit of Donner Peak offers
wildflowers, lakes, and the perfect view
of Donner Lake from the summit. The
trail also connects to the Pacific Crest
Trail if you are craving some extra
mileage.
Wine Country
Bear Valley to Lake Alpine,
Calaveras County
4 miles, out-and-back with views of
forests and alpine lakes.
Calaveras South Grove Trail,
Arnold
4.9 miles, out-and-back through giant
sequoia groves and meadows. $10 day
use fee.
Calaveras North Grove Trail,
Arnold
1.7 mile, heavily trafficked loop. Like
the Calaveras South Grove Trail, this
trail offers giant sequoias on an easy
trail for all levels. $10 day use fee.

keep in mind
NUTRITION
Eating correctly should be considered a
priority during your adventures and also
as a training tool to set you up for success
either on the trail or in the gym.
You can think of your eating as three
different types of fuel. I like to use the
campfire analogy (now that we’re
in the wilderness) to talk about
these fuels, which can be
thought of in terms of tinder,
logs, and embers.
Green bean photo ©stock.adobe.com. Salad photo © Timolina-stock.adobe.com. Salt photo © stock.adobe.com.
During exercise, you need
to ignite your fire quickly and
efficiently to give you the
jump-start your body needs
to activate. This is the role
of carbs. Carbs are fast
burning which is often what
you need when you’re in the
backcountry or on a strenuous
hike. This quick fuel will give you near
immediate energy but, like tinder, it will
burn out quickly and shouldn’t be your
only source of fuel for your fire.
Proteins and fats are your best friends
when it comes to fuel, as they are longer
lasting sources of energy. If we were to
compare our digestion to a campfire,
proteins and fats are the logs you add to
the fire to keep it going strong, as they
burn slower and longer. This won’t give
you a needed quick burst of energy but
it will sustain you for longer and should
always be included in your diet.
For recovery, again, go for proteins.
Proteins are what help your muscles
rebuild after strenuous activity. They
provide what’s needed to make
your muscles grow and will
help accelerate recovery.
Electrolytes
Electrolytes are minerals that carry
a negative or positive charge and are
responsible for transporting the electrical
signal from your nervous system to your
muscles. When you start cramping, the
signal is not arriving properly due to a lack
of electrolytes.
When in the backcountry or on your
favorite trail, you will likely be sweating,
which is one way we lose these minerals
from the body, along with excretion.
An electrolyte imbalance can come
from two things: dehydration or
hyponatremia (essentially,
overhydration). If you sweat
out all your electrolytes
and don’t re-hydrate,
you will throw off your
electrolyte balance. If you drink too
much water, urinate frequently, and don’t
add electrolytes, you will also create an
imbalance.
Electrolytes come in many forms but it’s
ideal to get them in your food via sodium
and chloride (forming salt), potassium,
magnesium, calcium, and a few others. If
you are in the middle of rigorous exercise,
you aren’t going to stop for a delicious and
hydrating salad, so this is when electrolyte
supplements come in.
One of my favorite electrolyte supplements
are Nuun, which are tablets that dissolve
in water. Emergen-C has always been a
favorite as well since you can throw a
few packets into your pack and always
have them on hand.
Stretching
The importance of stretching is often overlooked. Stretching can increase
circulation, flexibility, prevent injury, and speed up recovery. I recommend
developing a regular yoga practice to keep yourself in the best shape possible.

BACKPACKING
We live within a two-hour drive to some of
North America’s best backpacking locales.
Promising solid adventure and some serious
exposure to nature, backpacking is by far
one of the greatest things you can do. You
will remember your backpacking trips for
life, guaranteed.
Where To Go
Tahoe Rim Trail
This is a bucket list item for nearly every
backpacker. The 170-mile loop around
Lake Tahoe is gorgeous, challenging, and
the logistics are fairly easy to manage.
Pacific Crest Trail
At 2,650 miles long, you may want to
break this one up into sections. The PCT
passes through some of Sierra Nevada’s
most gorgeous areas, including Desolation
Wilderness and Tahoe National Forests just
above Donner Lake.
Know Your Gear
Believe me, there is nothing worse than
being a full day (or more) away from
civilization and developing a huge blister
on your heel, an aching back, or an injured
calf. Choosing your gear correctly, knowing
how to use it properly, and breaking it in
before a long trip is key to keeping you
happy on the trail.
Echo Lakes to Lake Aloha
The trail takes you through Desolation
Wilderness along gorgeous alpine lakes on a
moderate 12-mile out-and-back trail. This
is a great trail to test your gear and stamina
for some longer, multi-day trips.
Shoes
Make sure you go on a few hikes with any
new footwear before you take them on a
multi-day trip. Hike at least five miles at a
minimum.
Backpacks
Make sure your pack fits you correctly (most
modern packs allow you to adjust the back
length, the shoulders, and the hip straps).
Getting these three things set up for your
body will make a huge difference in how the
pack feels, correctly distributing the weight to
your hips, and keeping your shoulders from
aching due to too much weight. Remember:
The weight should distribute to your hips,
not your shoulders. Your shoulder straps
are meant to keep the weight close to your
center of gravity, not for load bearing.
Backpacking Camp Gear
My ideal backpacking gear list includes
a Jetboil stove, a Therm-a-Rest NeoAir
Xlite sleeping pad, a good headlamp
like the Petzl Tikka, and a solid knife like
the Kershaw Blur series. For your camp
kitchen, I love the Sea to Summit X-Set 21
collapsible pots, and an AeroPress coffee
maker. (Why suffer without a delicious cup
of coffee?)
First Aid
Get a mid-sized first aid kit for you
backpacking needs. Your kit should contain:
• Moleskin for blisters
• Saline to clean wounds
• Band-aids to cover minor wounds
• Anti-bacterial cream (Neosporin)
• Gauze for cleaning/covering wounds
• Medical tape for making bandages,
preventing blisters, supporting tendons
• Medicines: pain reliever, antihistamine,
aspirin
• Alcohol for disinfecting
• Scissors for cutting dressings
• Steri-Strips or butterfly strips to treat
lacerations
• Elastic bandage (Ace) for treating
minor sprains
• Waterproof matches (optional fuel
tablets like Esbit)
• Sun block
• Soap
• Extra batteries
• Emergency heat blanket

MAP READING/NAVIGATION SKILLS
Picture this: You’re on a trail but realize
it may be the wrong one; you’re miles away
from the nearest cell signal; your cell phone
is nearly dead; and daylight is waning. The
sense of dread it can inspire is very real.
There aren’t many feelings that compare to
the feeling of being lost in the wilderness.
Thankfully, learning some simple map
reading techniques is easy and can help
alleviate that horrible feeling of wild
desperation.
Here's what you need to know:
• Know how to orient your map to your
surroundings using a compass.
• Know how to identify landmarks.
• Know how to use an orienteering or
lensatic compass to sight azimuths to the
landmarks in your surroundings.
• Know how to match an azimuth (the
direction of a celestial object from the
observer) to the terrain on a map to
pinpoint your location on a map.
If you know how to do these four things,
you will never feel lost as you’ll be able
to reliably find your location and find the
correct route to your destination—even if
you’ve lost the trail.

how to properly
PACK YOUR BACKPACK
Correctly distributing the weight of your gear on your back is crucial to
having a successful backpacking trip and keeping yourself injury-free.
Head storage: This is
a good place to keep
emergency items.
I always keep my
headlamp, first aid
kit, and navigation
items here in case I
need them quickly
in an emergency.
Top section: This is
a good place to keep
it light and store
items you may need
quick access to. You
can put your clothes,
tent, and jackets you
may need quickly
(windbreaker, puffy).
Middle section:
This is where
your heavy items
should go like your
water reservoir,
food canisters,
and camp kitchen
gear. Tip: fill the
empty spaces with
clothes you don’t
need immediately.
Side/outside
storage: Keep your
water bottle and
trekking poles
here. Some people
like to have their
windbreaker here
as well in case
the weather turns
quickly.
Hip pockets:
This is a great
place for your cell
phone, GPS unit,
knife, and energy
bars.
Lower section:
Keep it light! This
is where you
should keep your
sleeping pack,
night clothes, and
even your tent (if
you didn't store it
on top).

Essential Camping Gear
Kitchen
There’s a huge range of sizes, types, and
functionalities you can choose from when it
comes to your camp kitchen. The important
things are: stove, table, cookware, kitchen
ware, and condiments.
Dining
Make sure you have a nice place to sit and
eat. Think of including chairs, folding table,
tablecloth, and citronella candles.
Entertainment
There are tons of fun games and activities
for the whole fam. Some ideas are corn
hole, speaker for music, card games like
Uno, Spot It!, poker, etc.
Shelter
Your tent setup is key. Here are some ideas to make it a
little cozier.
-Small lantern to hang from the roof.
-Air mattress for the extra comfy set up.
-Blankets and sleeping bags.
-Sleeping socks (I know it sounds weird but you’ll thank
me later).
-Tent. I’ve always loved the more inexpensive REI
Half-Dome series tents for a 2-person setup. For a
larger group, consider whether you need the tech specs
the outdoor brands offer (more resistant, easier setup,
greater temperature range, etc.), or if you can make
do with a more affordable Coleman-style tent. I always
recommend a tent with a mesh roof for checking out
the stars at night.

favorite SUP spots yet.
Salmon Falls
Also close to home with

Donner Lake
After every climbing trip to
the North Lake Tahoe area,
I always stop for a swim at
Donner Lake. The gorgeous
scenery, ease of access, and
refreshing temperature of
the water (by which I mean
bitterly cold) makes this top of
my list when in the area.
Lake Tahoe

TRIP IDEAS
Four Epic Weekends
With The Fam
There’s nothing like introducing your
kids to the great outdoors. It’s fun for
everyone, requires teamwork, provides
ample time for bonding, introduces your
kids to healthy hobbies that can keep
them out of trouble, and teaches kids
valuable lessons on decision making that
could help them throughout life.
Thankfully, we live right at the edge of
world-class outdoor adventures with
options for all levels of experience. This
is why we’ve compiled an adventurefilled
itinerary for the entire family.
Head out for a rafting trip in Coloma.
Set up camp at Camp Lotus, hit the
rapids in the afternoon, and head back
to camp for a beautiful night under
the stars.
Backpack in South Lake Tahoe.
Consider an overnight backpacking trip
on the Tahoe Rim Trail or up the Echo
Lakes to Lake Aloha.
Learn to rock climb.
Hire a guide at either Lover’s Leap in El
Dorado County or head to Yosemite for
an adventure the kids will never forget!
Want to start light? Take the kids to
Granite Arch Climbing Center, Rancho
Cordova (granitearch.com) or Quarry
Park Adventures, Rocklin (quarrypark.
com) before camping out at Folsom Lake.
Camp at Donner Lake.
Complete the full circle around Lake
Tahoe with a weekend at Donner
Lake. With options to swim, kayak,
paddleboard, jet ski and, of course, hike.
Romantic Outdoor
Getaways For Couples
A small crackling fire, a delicious campcooked
meal, a glass of red wine, the
smell of pine trees, stargazing miles away
from civilization, and sharing silence
with someone you love is hard to beat.
The outdoors has been a cornerstone
of my wife’s and my relationship.
Backpacking in the backcountry of
Patagonia, multi-day rock climbing trips
in Tahoe and the eastern sierras, day
hikes and car camping have all helped
us develop amazing teamwork and
communication skills. Countless times,
we’ve literally held the life of the other
person in our hands and our sense of
trust in one another has sky-rocketed.
Even if it’s not a lifestyle, simply spending
a weekend in nature with your special
someone will most definitely bring
you closer together and make for some
awesome tales for years to come.
Choose your spot.
If you’re looking to go someplace far
from any city and main highways, the
Wrights Lake area west of Lake Tahoe
might be a nice choice for you.
Wine and dine.
Having the right setup is essential. Get a
small table like the collapsible Coleman
27-inch Compact Roll Top. Buy two
or three (one for preparing the meal,
one for cooking, one for eating). Buy a
tablecloth, an electric candle (there are
some nice ones that don’t look tacky),
wine tumblers, comfortable camp
chairs, and citronella candles to keep
the mosquitos away.
Light a fire.
Gather firewood upon arrival or bring
your own. Check the local area to see
if they allow you to bring your own
firewood as some places prohibit this
to protect the local environment. Tip:
two-person camp chairs are awesome
for cuddling in front of the fire with
a blanket.
Shack up.
Having a sweet sleeping arrangement
ties it all together. You can bring an air
mattress, hang a lantern up from the roof
of the tent, have a separate space for your
gear that doesn’t invade your space, and
even leave the roof open to see the stars.
Get to know each other.
Yes, it sounds corny but there is always
something more to learn about your
partner. Bring a set of questions like
the ones in “4,000 Questions for
Getting to Know Anyone and Everyone.”
This is a fun way to connect, start a
conversation, and learn something new
about each other.
Other Fun Outings
• Paddleboard around Zephyr Cove.
• Backpack to Wrights Lake.
• Horseback ride and camp at Folsom
Lake.

Pub Nachos
Transforming a dark and controversial history into a place
of community and celebration, Placerville Public House
adds a new twist to some classic favorites while providing
the perfect balance between old and new.
The rich history of Gold Country exudes from the
centuries-old, antique brick walls. Through historically protected
murals and faded pictures of early 1900s life in Placerville, the spirit of a bygone era
emanates outward and is impregnated with the smell of malted libations and freshly
baked pizzas.
A true beer lover’s haven, the pub boasts rare, small-batch craft brews and a

enewed menu every
six months, sourced
from local farms—so
you can rest assured
that the beer is always
cold, the ingredients
are always fresh, and
the plates are always
innovative.
We started off
with the pub nachos,
a creative twist on a
pub classic. In place
of traditional tortilla
chips, we received a
tower of kettle chips
bathed in deliciously
savory and spicy beer
cheese sprinkled with
beans, green onions,
and corn, topped with
a conservative serving
of shredded pork and
habanero sour cream.
This fork-friendly plate
made it clear why the
popularity of this place
has begun to skyrocket.
As we savored the
last remaining bite of
nachos, a steaming
serving of skillet-baked
pork belly mac ‘n’
cheese came sizzling
onto the table. With
a touch of spice, the
savory cheese and
blue cheese crumbles
melted away amid
the perfect bitesized
piece of pork
belly. Garnished with
habanero sour cream,
crispy onions, and
chopped green onions,
the execution couldn’t
have been more
delicious.
The sushi
bowl provided an
appreciated touch of
freshness, tang, and
balance to the meal but
lacked something we
couldn’t quite pinpoint.
Pork Belly Mac
Cinnamon Apple Flat
Sushi Bowl
It was, however, a nice,
light addition to an
otherwise rich meal.
Now for dessert. Oh,
man! The cinnamon
apple flat tied sweet
and tart notes together
perfectly. A sweet
cream cheese spread
sat on a delicately soft
flatbread crust topped
with cinnamon apples
and drizzled with
sweet caramel. When
fresh apples don’t fall
far from the tree and
right onto your plate,
you can bet you’re
going to get something
special.
All things
considered, it will
be hard for any
restaurant in the area
to cohesively blend
environs, history,
and taste in the
same intriguing and
delicious way that
Placerville Public
House does.

If you’re looking for authentic Middle Eastern food, I've found the place!
Shawarma Stackz in Roseville offers fresh, house-made, legit Middle Eastern
dishes. Everything is made from scratch: Meat stacks, falafel, pita bread—
everything. What’s more, they have very generous serving sizes. I got a Chicken
Pita Sandwich and ate half for lunch and the other half for dinner. But the
menu was so inviting I couldn’t help myself and did enjoy some other tasty
items with it. Let me tell you about my pita first. You get to choose your protein
(steak shawarma, chicken shawarma, or falafel), then choose how you want
it: In a pita, rice bowl, or salad. I love pita, so that’s the route I went. You then
pick some goodies to go alongside your protein. I chose lettuce, parsley mix,
cucumber, and fries. Yes, fries! I’m so glad I added them. They have a list of
house-made sauces you can mix in as well, and I went with the cucumber
yogurt sauce, which was similar to a tzatziki sauce and oh-so-good. I also had to
try the Halloumi Cheese Stix with pita (yay, more pita!), fig jam, and cucumber
yogurt sauce. They were like mozzarella sticks but way better. And, to sweeten
the meal, you’ll have to get the Cinnamon Pita Chips for dessert. Just because. I
will be going back for those. Cuz, pita! — by JULIE RYAN

5 Festive Recipes

Easter is a time for celebration and good food! We’ve asked
five local chefs to share their favorite Easter recipes that
you can re-create from the comfort of your own home.
Happy cooking and happy Easter!
Eggs Benedict with Ham
Submitted by Brian Bennett, Bennett’s
Kitchen Bar Market, 1595 Eureka
Road, Roseville, 916-750-5150,
bennettskitchen.com
› 8 eggs plus 3 egg yolks
› ½ lb. ham, finely sliced
› 4 English muffins
› ¼ lb. butter (1 stick) plus 10 tbsp.
salted butter
› 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
› Fresh chives, thinly sliced
› 1 tbsp. white vinegar
› Cayenne pepper to taste
To make the hollandaise sauce:
Melt 10 tbsp. butter over low heat;
transfer to measuring cup. Add egg
yolks and lemon juice into a blender.
Blend 30 seconds on medium-high
until it lightens in color. Remove top
plug from blender lid and run blender
on low speed. Slowly drizzle in
melted butter. Continue blending for
another couple seconds after butter
is incorporated. Turn off blender and
taste. Should be buttery, lemony, and
lightly salty. Add pinch of cayenne if
desired. Remove from blender and
store in warmed measuring cup (with
spout) in a warm place. Use within 45
minutes.
To make ham and eggs:
In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 lb.
butter. Add sliced ham and slowly
poach until warm.
Hand split muffins and lightly brush
with melted butter from ham. Place
on baking sheet under a broiler to
toast; watch closely to avoid burning.
Crack each egg into separate glass
ramekins. Place large pot on stove,
fill to ½ inch from the top with
water. Add pinch of salt and white
vinegar. Bring to slow rolling boil
then turn down by half so water is
still simmering. Gently roll eggs into
water. Set a timer (3 minutes for soft
yolks, 4 minutes for medium yolks, 5
minutes for hard yolks). Use slotted
spoon to remove eggs.
Place both halves of toasted English
muffin on a plate. Place little ham
on top (make a sort of nest). Place
poached egg on top. Cover with
hollandaise sauce. Sprinkle chives
and pinch of cayenne on top.

Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict
Submitted by Marc Riedel, Wise Villa Winery, 4200 Wise Road
Lincoln, 916-581-6959, wisevillawinery.com
› 2 tbsp. white vinegar
› 1 tsp. plus 1 / 8 tsp. kosher salt
› ½ cup butter
› 8 large eggs plus 3 egg yolks
› 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
› Tabasco sauce
› 4 English muffins
› 8 oz. smoked salmon
› 2 tbsp. red onion, minced/sliced
› 2 tbsp. capers
Ready two sauce pots with water: one half full for poaching eggs and
the second with an inch of water for the sauce. Add vinegar to the first
pot and 1 teaspoon kosher salt; bring to boil then lower to medium low.
To make the hollandaise sauce:
Melt butter completely in microwave. Bring the second pot (with an
inch of water) to boil then lower to medium. Use any metal bowl to
cover the top of the pot (use a bowl little larger than the pot so you
can hold the bowl). Add egg yolks and lemon to the bowl; using a
towel to hold the metal bowl, vigorously whisk yolks until thick (tip:
remove bowl from time to time from the pot so not to scramble the
yolks.) Once yolk mixture is thickened, slowly add melted butter (keep
removing from heat every minute or so to avoid scrambling yolks or
breaking the sauce). Once all the butter is incorporated, remove from
heat and add tabasco and 1/8 teaspoon salt (adjust accordingly).
Using the first pot of water, crack eggs into small bowls and
gently place in simmering water for 3-4 minutes. Meanwhile, toast
English muffins. Once toasted, add 1 oz. of smoked salmon to each
muffin. Remove poached eggs with slotted spoon and place atop
smoked salmon. Add hollandaise sauce and sprinkle red onion and
capers if desired.

Chocolate Chip Orange Scones
(inspired by The Cheeseboard: Collective Works)
Submitted by Jennifer Marinez, Karen’s Bakery Café, 705
Gold Lake Drive, Folsom, 916-985-2665, karensbakery.com
› 3 ½ cups all-purpose
flour
› ½ tsp. baking soda
› 1 tbsp. baking powder
› ¾ tsp. kosher salt
› ¾ cup plus ¼ cup sugar
› 1 heaping tbsp. orange
zest
› 1 cup (2 sticks) cold,
unsalted butter, cut into
one-inch cubes
› 1 cup mini chocolate chips
› ¾ cup heavy cream plus ½
cup for topping
› ¾ cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
and line baking sheet with
parchment paper. Sift flour,
baking soda, and baking
powder into stand mixer or
large bowl. Add orange zest.
If using a stand mixer, add
salt and 3/4 cup sugar, mix
with paddle attachment on
low speed until combined.
Add butter on low speed for
4 minutes or until the size of
peas. Mix in chocolate chips.
Make a well in the center and
add 3/4 cups heavy cream
and buttermilk. Mix until
ingredients come together;
some loose flour should remain
at bottom of the bowl.
If making by hand, add salt and
3/4 cups sugar to a bowl and
stir with wooden spoon until
combined. Add butter (cut to
size of small peas). Mix in mini
chocolate chips. Make a well in
the center and add 3/4 cups
of heavy cream and buttermilk.
Mix until ingredients come
together; some loose flour
should remain at bottom of
the bowl.
Shape dough into 10-inch
circle. Pat down to 1-inch thick.
Cut into 8 wedges. Place on
prepared pan, 2 inches apart.
Brush scones with softly
whipped cream (from ½ cup

Marmalade-Glazed Ham
with Sweet Orange Tea Sauce
(adapted from Epicurious)
Submitted by Glory Thomsen, The Farm Table, 311 Main Street,
Placerville, 530-295-8140, ourfarmtable.com
Ham:
› 1 16-19 lb. smoked fully cooked
bone-in ham
› 36 whole cloves
› 1 cup orange marmalade
› ¼ cup Dijon mustard
› 2 tbsp. plus 1 ½ cups water
Sauce:
› 2 cups water
› 4 orange-spice or black tea bags
› 2 cups canned low-salt chicken broth
› 1 cup orange juice
› 3 tbsp. orange marmalade
› 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard
› 1 tbsp. cornstarch, dissolved in 1
tbsp. water
Pineapple-Mint Relish:
› 3 cups pineapple, chopped
› ½ cup bell pepper, chopped
› ½ cup red onion, chopped
› ¼ cup fresh mint, chopped
› 2 tsp. lemon peel, grated
› 1 Berkshire Pork 10-rib rack, about 7.5 lbs.
› 4 tbsp. Chef Q’s All-Purpose Season-All (available at q1227restaurant.
com) or your favorite all-purpose seasoning
› 2 tsp. black pepper
› ½ tsp. kosher salt
› 2 tbsp. raw or light brown sugar
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Look on both
ends of the rack for the small eye that sits
above the main eye. With rack laying fat side
up, make horizontal cut through the meat,
across bones, above small eye. If desired,
using a sharp knife, remove all meat above
this cut, from all sides of bones. Scrape
bones clean (Frenching).
Lay the rack fat side down on a cutting
board and using your finger, feel about 1 inch
below the bottom of the ribs for remnants
of the chine bone. If any small, thin bone
fragments remain, trim away with sharp
knife. Flip rack over and score the fat cap in a
crosshatch pattern using shallow cuts, being
careful not to cut into the meat.
In a small bowl, stir seasoning and sugar.
Season roast liberally with salt and black
pepper on both sides. Rub in spice mixture,
massaging into the fat, coating all surfaces
evenly.
Using butcher’s string, tie rack in between
each rib to make compact and allow for
even cooking. If bones are Frenched, cover
with small squares of aluminum foil. Lay
roast ribs-facing-up on rack over a roasting
pan. Roast until the thickest part of meat
registers 140 degrees on a thermometer,
about 2 hours. Remove from oven and allow
to rest, about 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, increase oven temperature to
450 degrees. Remove foil from bones (if
used). Place roast back in the oven until fat
is nicely browned and crispy, about 5-10
minutes. (Watch carefully to avoid burning.)
Remove from oven and rest for 10 minutes
before removing string and carving into
individual chops.
(Serves 6-8)
To make the ham:
Position rack in the center of
the oven and preheat to 325
degrees. Trim rind and excess fat
from upper side of ham, leaving
1/4-inch-thick layer of fat. Using
long sharp knife, score fat in
one-inch-wide diamond pattern.
Insert one clove into center of
each scored diamond. Place ham
in a heavy large roasting pan.
Bake until thermometer inserted
into center of ham registers
120 degrees, about 3 hours 45
minutes.
Melt marmalade in saucepan over
medium heat. Whisk in mustard
and 2 tablespoons water. Boil until
mixture thickens enough to coat
spoon without dripping, about six
minutes. Set aside.
Transfer ham to a cutting board.
Increase oven temperature
to 425 degrees. Place same
roasting pan atop burner on
medium heat. Whisk remaining
water into pan, scraping up
browned bits from the bottom.
Transfer pan juices to four-cup
glass measuring cup and freeze
for 15 minutes. Spoon fat off
top of pan juices; reserve juices.
Line same pan with foil and
return ham. Generously spoon
marmalade mixture over ham.
Bake until glaze is set and begins
to caramelize, about 20 minutes.
Let stand 30 minutes.
To make the sauce:
Bring water to boil in a heavy
saucepan. Add tea bags. Remove
from heat, cover, and let steep
10 minutes. Discard tea bags.
Add chicken broth, orange juice,
and orange marmalade. Boil until
reduced to three cups, about 12
minutes. Whisk in Dijon mustard
and reserved pan juices. Return to
boil. Whisk in cornstarch mixture.
Boil until slightly thick, about 4
minutes. Season with pepper.
To make the relish:
Mix all ingredients in a bowl.
Season with salt and pepper.
Carve ham and serve with sauce
and relish.
(Serves 12)

CELEBRATE
EARTH DAY
5 Eco-Friendly Tips
1
Avoid single-use products and
invest in reusable ones: totes,
straws, water bottles, food
storage containers.
Where We Live
“A lake is the landscape’s most
beautiful and expressive
feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking
into which the beholder
measures the depth of his own
nature.”—Henry David Thoreau
2
Reduce paper consumption
by using kitchen towels and
washcloths to clean up messes,
using cloth napkins during meals,
and signing up for paperless billing.
3
Take shorter showers. And keep
a bucket in the shower to collect
water while it warms up; use that
to water your plants.
4
Buy local food to reduce the
distance from farm to fork.
Better yet, plant your own garden
and share the crop with your
neighbors!
5
Recycle this magazine or use it
for craft projects. Scour Pinterest
for ideas!
