Essential Travel Advice
OPEN DATES AND TIMES:
Open dates and times may be subject to change,
and can vary throughout the seasons and day
of week.
Businesses indicating ‘Open Year-Round’
often close at certain times, for example,
during Christmas time. Therefore, we strongly
recommend that you check dates and times
in advance of travel, close to the date of your
planned visit – particularly if you are travelling
distances. You should do this by checking the
website of the attraction, activity or experience
of interest - or give them a call to get the latest
information.
CORE OPERATING TIMES:
The core operating times for many tourism
businesses are typically between 10:00 and
17:00h, with the last entry one hour or more
before closing. Many also operate extended
operating times during the high season when
there are more hours of daylight. It is always best
to check their times in advance of visiting.
BOOKING REQUIREMENTS:
Many attractions, activities, and entertainments,
require advance booking for tours and visits.
Some entertainments and activities also operate
subject to demand. You should always check to
see if booking is required.
Take time out to explore East Clare and Lough Derg.
The area preserves the best of everything in a fresh,
visitor-friendly environment with towns and villages of
great character like Tulla, Tuamgraney, Feakle, Scarriff,
Mountshannon, and the twin towns of Killaloe/Ballina.
East Clare is dotted with almost 40 lakes and boasts
magnificent Lough Derg and the Shannon Waterway. Lough
Derg, the River Shannon’s largest lake, is 12kms at its widest
point. It provides an opportunity to experience wonderful
on-water and water-side trails and exhilarating activities. You
can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding
and quality angling on the lake. There are several
activity providers who can provide equipment and offer
lessons and on-the-water guided tours. Or, book a one-hour
cruise from Killaloe/Ballina on-board ‘the Spirit of Killaloe’ –
the views from the water are spectacular.
The area also has two of Ireland’s few blue-flag inland
beaches at Ballycuggeran (Killaloe) and Mountshannon.
Both have excellent water-side picnic facilities.
If you like walking, you will love the area. There are several
Clare is a remarkable county and the story of its people, which
stretches back over 8,000 years, is excitingly captured at the
beautifully restored former Convent of Mercy building, the exhibits
ENNIS FRIARY
Ennis, Co. Clare
Visit the town’s oldest building
This 13th century Franciscan friary, founded by the O’Briens of
Thomond who once ruled much of North Munster, has numerous
15th/16th century sculptures carved in the local hard limestone.
A carved image of St. Francis carrying a cross, wearing the
Franciscan habit and displaying the stigmata is evident in the
nave. Under the south arch of the tower, an elaborate tracery
canopy of the late 15th century was perhaps part of an ornate
tomb. Visit the sacristy, an impressive structure with ribbed, barrelvaulted
ceiling, and the friary—the burial place of the O’Brien and
McMahon families—the ancient Kings of Clare.
The most prominent feature is the West Door, which tradition
has it was the main entrance —the centre of government in
the early medieval Viking city. See the Misericords—carved
oak seats depicting monsters and other creatures (symbols
of good and evil). See the original altar—a large limestone
slab 4m/13feet long dating from before the Reformation.
Cromwellian soldiers used horses to remove the altar during
their siege of the city in 1651, though it was reinstated in the
1960s.
The Cathedral has an impressive 6 chapels—the Chapel of
Saint James & Mary Magdalen; the Lady Chapel; the Chapel
of the Holy Spirit; the Jebb Chapel; the O’Brien Chapel; and
the Glentworth Chapel. No trip to the city is complete without
visiting this historic building on the King’s Island, overlooking
the River Shannon.
