About GCM

About GCM

About GCM

The printing industry is Canada’s fourth-largest manufacturing employer, with

packaging as a leading growing industry. The School of Graphic Communications

Management (GCM) at X University is the only four-year, undergraduate program

in Canada dedicated to this industry. Offering a Bachelors of Technology, students

explore printed and digital communications and learn how to bring projects from

concept and design through to completion.

Thanks to a strong faculty, connected international partnerships, small class sizes,

a hands-on learning environment, and paid internship opportunities, students gain

valuable skills within Creativity and Design, Technology and Innovation, and Business

and Entrepreneurship. Four concentrations are available upon completion of the

program: Digital Graphic Output, Leadership, Packaging, and Publishing - ensuring

students graduate ready to enter the workforce across Canada and beyond.

What are some meaningful takeaways

from your internship?

My internship position provided invaluable

experiences that I will undoubtedly carry

forward into my career as a professional

‘GCMer’. As a Graphic Design Intern

working for a sports organization, I was

granted the opportunity to explore my

passions and strengthen my skill sets in a

brand-new environment. I was able to find

success and enjoyment in this internship

as a direct result of learning effective

collaboration towards a common goal; I

attribute this lesson to the undying morale

and perseverance displayed by the team.

What are your goals and aspirations after

graduating from GCM?

Having completed four years as a GCM

student, I sincerely hope that as I grow as

an individual, I am able to be the inspiration

to others that I have found in those who

have inspired me. Both professionally and

personally, I have encountered individuals

who not only sustain fulfilling careers in

the industry but do so with a purpose that

is driven by their passions. Ultimately, I

aspire to follow my own passions with the

same enthusiasm, creating positive impacts

wherever possible.

What was your favourite GCM project?

My favourite project was getting to create a

package from scratch in GCM 808 - Outside

the Box: Package Prototyping. It was really

exciting to see something we created come

to life! Using the 3D modelling software, we

were able to make a package that might

be a solution to a simple problem. Due

to being online, we did not get to use the

machines associated with the project but we

were able to see pictures. It was really fun

from start to finish!

The project that stood out to me as what

I enjoyed doing the most was in first-year

in GCM 130 (Design and Layout). We were

given a project which asked us to show off

our creativity skills. This involved getting an

adjective, having to design a children’s

book cover based on the adjective you got.

So for example, my adjective was “clammy.”

I decided to do an underwater theme,

based on a clam under the sea. I loved this

project as we had the expanded ability to

design anything that sparked our vision.

What was your favourite GCM project?

What was your favourite GCM project?

A project that stands out was the

packaging assignment I completed in

second year for my GCM 210 - Introduction

to Packaging class, taught by Jay Park.

As a group, we had to develop a package

design for a specific product and consider

the many factors included in the process of

developing a successful package such as;

sustainability, marketing, material, graphics

etc. My group chose coffee, as it was the

main source of our energy at the time! This

assignment was the first real introduction

to the concentration of packaging and also

grew my interest within this industry!

What is your most fun memory in GCM?

There have been a lot of late night/early

morning studying at the GCM building.

I have had some of the best laughs with

fellow students in those sleep-deprived

and stressful moments. We bonded over

our anxiety for exams and always found

a way to make it interesting! I will always

remember studying in the bright orange

chairs in the Heidelberg lobby really early,

and our professor, Scott, looking at us

laughing. He knew exactly which exam

we were studying for, just based off our

confused faces, staring at our notes.

important proper organization is in order to

run a successful business and how helpful

daily meetings are. I was exposed to different

roles in the company and was fortunate

enough to move around and learn different

tasks and take on various responsibilities.

Having proper support and communication is

also very important for any position.

What are some meaningful takeaways

from your internship?

In my internship I learned that sometimes it

is ok to let things slide. While being in the

industry, you notice certain things more than

the average customer, and my internship

taught me that sometimes even if you notice

a small defect in a product you have to ask

yourself if the customer will notice it and if it

affects the quality of the product.

As a self-described renaissance person,

However, if I had narrow it down, I think

that a career in publishing or science

aspirations. I would also love to publish

my own book or start my own business

someday! Ultimately, after graduation,

I hope to keep learning and growing,

my family and friends!

68

What are some meaningful takeaways

from your internship?

My internship was a rollercoaster of

emotions and hard work. It was a new

and exciting experience to have my first

internship and I learned a lot from it. The

biggest takeaway I have from my internship

is the importance of communication.

While communication is already a very

important skill to have in your everyday

life, it became more apparent than ever

that communication in a work environment

is a whole different ball game as people

are busy and depend on you to constantly

communicate to keep things on track!

The switch to online learning was both

rewarding yet challenging at the same time.

Initially I was scared that online learning

would make it harder to understand and

learn content but to my surprise, it actually

made things a lot easier providing lectures

recordings were posted online. Overall,

it was a unique experience and some of

the main takeaways I had were to be more

we all deserve a break sometimes.

I hope to become an Art Director in

Colloquium

x

The GCM Colloquium is a professional, academic and networking event that is

run by undergraduate students in the Graphic Communications Management’s

Program at Ryerson University. This event brings together students and industry

professionals from across the Greater Toronto Area to discuss the current

trends and developments in the graphic arts industry with a new theme every

year. The Colloquium is usually an evening event featuring a Keynote address,

a panel discussion and an information reception that provides students with

excellent opportunities to interact with different company representatives to

expand their knowledge and discuss latest technologies.

RyeTAGA

x

It is the core mission of the RyeTAGA student chapter group to produce a

journal for the annual technical conference of TAGA. The journal will contain

research papers from the GCM 490 course. The journal will be designed

and produced by the student members of the RyeTAGA student chapter.

RyeTAGA will have some fundraising events to offset the costs of traveling

to the conference location, but it is not RyeTAGA’s main mission to organize

social events for the School of Graphic Communications Management.

GCM Course Union

x

The Graphic Communications Management Course Union (GCMCU) represents

GCM students at Ryerson University. They are a group of student leaders who

strive to represent and promote the interests, engagement, and inclusivity of all

GCM students. The GCMCU organizes events, both academic and social, as a way

to encourage interactivity and inclusivity between students, as well as collaborative

events with other programs within The Creative School and across the university.

RYEPACK

x

Born out of Ryerson’s School of Graphic Communications Management,

RyePack is a student group dedicated to the exploration and advancement

of all things packaging. Packaging is everywhere and has become one of the

largest and fastest growing sectors of the print industry. As a result, we remain

committed to mobilizing students by giving them a variety of opportunities to

participate in and learn about this exciting industry.

107

Grad Book Team

x

The Graphic Communications Management Grad Book Committee exists to produce

a professional printed publication showcasing GCM’s graduating class. This is a

long-standing annual tradition at GCM and the final product is made available to

employers at GCM’s annual Job Fair in March where it is used as a recruitment tool

for potential full-time candidates. The Grad Book team is made up of 25 students

and a faculty advisor who worked together over a 5-month period to produce

the book entirely on their own, helping to put into practice everything learned

in class and during their internships. Students are responsible for every aspect of

the final product: project management, purchasing, sponsorship, creative concept,

graphic design, layout, prepress, production, binding, finishing and distribution.
