DEar CollEagUES anD friEnDS,
7 th InternatIonal SympoSIum
on neuroprotectIon and neurorepaIr 2012
We are delighted to welcome more than 300 colleagues from 29 countries and 5 continents who joined us for
the 7th International Symposium on Neuroprotection & Neurorepair. Thank you for making it the so far largest
meeting of the renowned and successful Magdeburg Meeting Series.
We come together in the Prussian residential city of Potsdam, being situated at the gates of Berlin, and
housing some of the most important historical sites. Among them are Sanssouci, the former summer palace of
Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, and Cecilienhof, the location of the Potsdam Conference immediately after
World War II. For sure Potsdam looks back to a turbulent and rich history, but has always been a place of international
atmosphere. Particularly, from the ground we are standing on, the mighty and elegant Zeppelin airships
departed to connect people from different countries and continents in time when the idea of global travelling by
fast jet airplanes was still nothing more than a utopian dream.
Now, the city brings together researchers, colleagues and friends from all over the world to discuss the
latest research findings. We are going to report results from ongoing endeavors regarding the clinical translation
of thoroughly conducted research that hopefully will provide additional benefit to our patients. We will also
discuss strategies for targeted neuroregeneration and rehabilitation, for enhanced diagnosis and visualization
by novel imaging approaches as well as cell based therapies. A major, but not the sole focus will be given to the
ageing brain as well as vascular aspects of neurodegeneration and dementia. We will also try to find novel and
innovative ways to balance immune responses to central nervous system damage and to address metabolic and
neurochemical processes as targets for neuroprotection and neurorepair.
Most importantly, the unique and special philosophy of the meeting series, its scientific spirit, has always
been the fusion of scientific excellence in exciting talks with the opportunity for ample time for fruitful
discussions and exchange of ideas. The attendance of leading experts from internationally renowned scientific
institutes initiates a straightforward and rewarding scientific debate which will be joined by the contributions of
the younger colleagues. Moreover, we will have opportunities to refresh old friendships, as well as to make new
ones during the carefully organized social program in well selected places.
Finally, we want to thank all those who provided continuous support and helped us in making the 7th
International Symposium on Neuroprotection and Neurorepair possible. We especially thank our sponsors from
the industry for generous support and scientific contributions. Without this support, it would have been impossible
to organize the meeting and to keep registration fees as low. Moreover, we would not be able to attract so
many distinguished speakers without the support of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft,
DFG) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung
und Forschung, BMBF). We also are grateful for the International Society on Neurochemistry (ISN) as well as the
International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) which provided major support in form of scholarships for those
young colleagues, who submitted excellent contributions, but still lack own travel budgets.
We are now looking forward to four amazing days filled with cutting edge research, as well as stimulating
scientific discussions which hopefully will provide you with even more fresh ideas for your further research
endeavors.
Sincerely yours,
