INTRODUCTION
A very warm welcome to another exciting SDEA Design & Display Directory.
As always, we uncover some of the latest and greatest in design and display. It has continued to be a tough
year for many high street retailers, but we show that retail can thrive with innovation, strong environmental
credentials, appropriate use of technology, an outstanding customer experience and of course, great design.
Our features start at the locally and ethically sourced fresh produce seller Bristol Loaf at their new outlet just
south of the city of Bristol in Bedminster. Located within the Engine House Development, a boutique mixed use
retail offer, Loaf forms a community foodie hub that brings theatre to everyday consumption.
The journey continues across the globe to Sydney, Australia, at the new convenience concept of Aldi with their
Corner Store format before moving back onto UK soil where we look at Londonʼs oldest tea shop, Twinings, still
in its original home at 216 The Strand.
Bridging the gap between a museum and shop we visit Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden, London, the
headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England. With the very basis of this distinguished establishment
dating back to the early 1700s, and its equally historic setting within the Grade II listed building, the interior has
an air of mystery and intrigue whilst also delivering a beautifully created retail space that has timeless appeal.
In the South East corner of the UK we visit Wakefields Jewellers. Seemingly more 5* luxury boutique hotel than
high street store, it combines sumptuous fabrics in vibrant colours with opulent marble floors and counter
tops, plus gilt edging to fixtures, fittings and accessories.
Returning to London we uncover the new flagship store from Bally on Regent Street. Honouring the Swiss
brandʼs inherent qualities of art, architecture and craftsmanship in an experiential environment, the store
offers new ways of shopping with a multi-functional format, including cultural programming such as film
screenings, panel discussions and exhibitions. Staying on Regent Street we visit Onitsuka Tigerʼs new store.
From its glorious Georgian façade to its sparse minimal interior, this fashion led emporium positions itself at
the pinnacle of high end retail. For our final London review we move to Oxford Street, where we see the first
Mango store in the UK to feature the companyʼs new Mediterranean-inspired store concept.
For our final store review we cross to Europe where a Tommy Hilfiger flagship has opened on Boulevard des
Capucine in Paris, France. The cutting-edge concept cleverly fuses the virtual with the physical realms of retail.

Not many businesses, particularly within retail, can claim
to have grown and prospered through the Coronavirus
pandemic. Yet in the bustling city of Bristol one fresh
produce seller has done just that.
Many food and drink retailers adapted
during this drastic episode and the
Bristol Loaf has truly excelled itself in
every aspect. Starting life in 2017 as a
lowkey bakery and café based in Redfield,
the Loaf now has 3 outstanding stores
across Bristol. Having built a strong
reputation for its fresh baked goods and
excellent coffee, the inaugural bakery
rapidly expanded into a second unit at
Bristol Beacons (a leading music venue)
bringing 100 covers inside and out, serving
from breakfast to dinner and everything
in between, including an organic
wine bar.
The latest space launched last year in the
south of the city in Bedminster. Located
within the Engine House Development,
a boutique mixed use retail offer, Loaf
forms a community foodie hub that
brings theatre to everyday consumption.
This flagship enterprise features

an organic sourdough bakery, café, deli, Hugo’s Greengrocer,
Two-Belly Cheesemonger and The Bristol Vine – the Loaf’s own
venture into organic wine. All food and drink are locally sourced
and made from scratch on site.
Once again Loaf enlisted the assistance of Bristol based retail
design specialists Phoenix Wharf to create a wholesome
experience store that seamlessly blends indoors and outdoors.
The aim being to create a unique shopping and eating
experience with emphasis on ethics and sustainability, whilst
drawing inspiration from its origins in Redfield.
The full height storefront glazing encourages exploration and
floods the store with natural light. Timber panels have been
used to create window boxes and hanging planters, which
surround the store’s ceiling. They are overflowing with greenery
to promote the ‘au naturel’ feel and have a second role in hiding
the electrical cables - further criss-cross wiring provides
structural support for the irrigation system. White tiling has
been applied to the main counter and large areas of wall to
ensure a subtle backdrop for this laidback environment, which
also allows the product to shine. The lighting continues the
subdued theme – large paper lanterns adorn the main café area
enhancing the relaxed and informal vibe. Reconditioned factory
pendants suspended over the counter omit very low levels of
light and convey a funky yet functional style. The tables and
chairs are also constructed from wood and metal, the tops
reconstructed from former bakers’ tables from the initial bakery.
As you enter the store you come face to face with a full height
bread display and so your retail journey begins. To your left the
grocer present their wares on freestanding and perimeter units;
wicker baskets, repurposed tin dishes and wooden crates are
loaded with fresh, organic, locally sourced produce. The main
café counter service area follows and comprises: take away
sales, central freestanding bread display, countertop pastry
showcase, a chiller housing the deli offer, hot food area under
heat lamps and the all-important 3.5m wide coffee station,
which allows plenty of space for both staff and customers to
complete their transactions. With its white tiling, solid ash
timber and glass display units, the counter is a striking
combination, both relaxed and on trend.
Beyond the café, located against the rear wall, are the Bristol
Vine featuring a wine tasting station plus a myriad of organic
wines to purchase and Two Belly Cheesemonger stocking all
manner of local cheesy delights for sale, also accompanied by
sampling. Both units continue the same muted materials
palette; The Vine features mostly ash shelving, whilst the cheesemonger
uses white tiles, wood and glass, plus the addition of
a large stainless chiller cabinet for storage.
Everything used in-store is locally and ethically sourced, meats
are high-welfare, all packaging is recycled or recyclable, breads
are never packaged in cellophane or plastic and all wholesale
products are delivered in crates or cardboard cartons that have
been collected from other producers to be used time and time
again. Any single use disposable items are bio-degradable and
made with recycled materials; all to help in Loaf’s ambition to
become Bristol’s greenest Bakery.
This really exciting venture succeeds in delivering exactly what it
set out to do. Hopefully its ethics will spread not just in the UK,
but globally.

PROJECT:
ALDI
CORNER
STORE
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA,
ANOTHER RETAIL ACHIEVEMENT HAS BEEN RECEIVED WITH MUCH
ACCLAIM. ONE OF THE LARGEST SUPERMARKET CHAINS, FAMED
FOR ITS STRIPPED-DOWN STORES AND COMPETITIVE PRICING, HAS
LAUNCHED A CREATIVE NEW CONVENIENCE CONCEPT.
The population of Northern Sydney, the
site of the inaugural store, are revelling in
a very independently styled grocery store.
Adorned with street art the instore
experience is fun and enticing, refreshing
and inspirational. Aldi joined forces with
Landini Associates to create a unique
format – the Aldi Corner Store; a store
that both looks great and is eminently
affordable. A rare combination!
In addition to its core grocery and fresh
produce, the Corner Store offers a
growing range of convenience-based
products, an artisan bakery serving seven
different types of sourdough bread, and
take away, locally roasted barista
coffee. There is also an instore juicer and
of course the much-loved special buys.
From the moment you enter the store you
are bombarded with powerful, colourful
imagery. Landini commissioned a local
artist to decorate the interior and the
Photography - Corporate Pixel / Kyle Ford
façade to help tie the brand to the local
community which it serves. A
proposition that will be repeated locally
across Australia to create a distinctly
different yet uniquely Aldi look. The
street style has been conveyed further
through the graphics, staff uniform and
the tone of the store; the overall
ambiance is original, quirky and playful.
With phrases such as ‘A bit cheesy’, ‘Nuts
about nuts’ and ‘Go bananas’ heading its
produce, the new concept will appeal to
its youthful, cosmopolitan
neighbourhood.
Street art embellishes the store façade,
multiple instore backdrops and full height
columns. Its playful tone is then
conveyed through all instore signage and
messaging. To ensure continuity and
brand recognition a consistent palette
of materials has been adopted for the
new design. Pale brick, white tiles and
blockwork have been incorporated
alongside the graphic backdrops to
form the perimeter; white tiling has
been applied to the chiller zones. Black
terrazzo-style flooring is matched with
black galvanised steel which highlights
all instore shopfittings and display, as
well as signage. Mesh panels cover the
entire expanse of ceiling. Fully
sustainable timber palettes, oak and
walnut are also woven into the scheme.
Of particular interest are the wooden
crates, which are used to display fresh
fruit and vegetables, they bring an
authentic feel to this funky outlet. Wood
shelving is primarily used within the
bakery section and wooden planks frame
the mesh ceiling panels.
The vibrant mural wraps around the
entrance creating a tunnel through which
you enter. The coffee counter is
positioned at the very front of the store to
take advantage of passers-by and make it
easy for customers who have completed
their shopping, to grab and go. Though
smaller in size to their supermarkets,
the store has a big personality and feels
decidedly spacious. Wide aisles give
the illusion of space and allow room for
browsing. The bulk of the freestanding
fixtures and fittings are low to mid height
and don’t obstruct the views around the
store; it has an informal feel that pulls
you into its heart leading you naturally
through its many different areas.
This new bite sized grocery retailer is a
real coup for Aldi. It’s loaded with
character and charm and is
environmentally credible too - powered
by 100% renewable electricity and is
complicit in the chain’s promise to send
zero waste to landfill by 2025.
Convenience food products are wrapped
in recycled packaging and there are
recycling bins located instore for
customer use. Quite the trend setter and
a beautifully executed store.

TWININGS
Our next sensational store closes
the gap between grocery retail and
gallery by elevating an everyday
product to an art form. This
beautifully appointed, compact store
offers an insight into a distinguished
global beverage retailer which has
been synonymous with a ‘good brew’
for centuries.
In 1706, when drinking coffee and
gin were far more prolific than
drinking water (due to the untreated
nature), Thomas Twining took the
humble tea leaf and turned it into a
desirable commodity that went on to
become the nation’s favourite drink.
He opened the first ever Twinings
teashop at 216 The Strand, London
and has been successfully selling this
household staple ever since.
Sited in its original home, London’s
oldest tea shop has undergone a
radical transformation. Using a
subtle colour palette and a refined
materials selection, the store has
taken on a museum like quality for
many of its visitors. Tea lovers from
across the globe come to try and buy
its many distinct and varied blends,
and also revel in its historical content.
The store belonging to this
historical retailer now follows a very
popular and extremely successful
contemporary retail format; Twinings
entrusted its brief to leading retail
design agency Dalziel & Pow, whose
wealth of experience transformed
what was merely a transactional
retail space into the true spiritual
home of the brand.
HIGHLY COMMENDED 2021 CREATIVE RETAIL AWARDS:
STORE DESIGN OF THE YEAR
The flagship is a visual delight with
well crafted cabinetry and shelving
lining the perimeter. The concept
embraces its heritage and is split
into four different categories which
present themselves in turn. Each
section has been individually designed
to fulfil a unique purpose: Wellbeing
proffers a glass dome that customers
wrap their hands around for spiritual
healing and advice on teas to
complement their souls. Sourced with
Care details the brand’s ethical virtues
and how they partner with suppliers to
improve their quality of life. Included
here is a large digital screen which
reveals the projects and places and
uses framed photos, plus a few select
props to enhance the experience.
Blenders Stories picks six of their best
master blenders and delves into their
lives and secret ingredients. Here
narrow wooden drawers sited below
the main storyboard can be pulled
out to reveal props, quotes and even
tea leaves that enrich each blender’s
identity. Finally, Pioneering Spirit
presents the history of Twinings, its
founders and the lengths they went
to get tea on the map! A series of
photos, captions, old advertisements
and previous packaging that span the
centuries are displayed on shelves
against a backdrop depicting a black
and white map of the world.
Throughout the ground floor the
lighting floods the store with a warm
glow that highlights the product.
The materials selected instore
complement the brand’s heritage;
grass cloth, raw oak, brass and stone
were chosen to enhance the natural
craft and authenticity.
A tasting zone at the rear of the store
completes the ground floor concept.
A large display table is surrounded
by full height digital screens which
flaunt idyllic imagery that transports
you to the tea plantations where they
source their exquisite tea and key
botanicals. You are fully immersed in
the Twinings world - gardens and herb
fields encourage you to touch, smell
and taste the tea during the brewing
process.
Moving downstairs the designers have
created a much more sophisticated
and atmospheric sampling bar that
can be hired out for events. The
heritage blue walls and numerous
portrait paintings of the Twinings
family create an intimate space, which
is consumed by the impressive 10-
seat tasting table. This sultry interior
has an evocative spirit that both
relaxes and heightens your senses all
at once. The rich ochre bar stools are
a notable feature.
Twinings uses a refined palette and
conventional style to seduce its
customers; both its central London
location and Royal Seal require
nothing less than perfection. This
elegant showroom is equally engaging
and perfect for showcasing some of
the finest teas in the world.

PROJECT:
FREEMASONS HALL
Remaining in England’s capital city a little
longer, we uncover another remarkable
retail outlet that bears a long, rich history.
Similar to Twinings, it also bridges the
gap between museum and shop. But
this is where the similarity ends, for this
visitor experience and retail space helps
unravel the mystery of a discreet society.
Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden,
London – headquarters of the United
Grand Lodge of England - has in fact been
open to the public for many years and its
museum receives around 40,000 visitors
per year. They have recently embarked
upon a new venture; to create a store that
was centrally located to ensure maximum
footfall and appeal to both its members,
seeking prestigious regalia marking the
various stages on their Freemasons’
journey, as well as the general public
whose interests primarily revolve around
souvenirs and keepsakes.
In order to achieve this complex vision
and ensure that the new space both
respected the Masonic legacy and also
communicated a strong contemporary
identity, they commissioned specialist
museum and gallery designers, Lumsden.
At the same time they developed an
extended range of quality souvenirs, gifts
and memorabilia that even encompasses
women’s jewellery and men’s grooming
ranges; all to be housed within this new
retail masterpiece.
Much of the inspiration for the concept
was taken from the heritage architecture
with colours, materials and decorative
finishes reflected throughout the overall
design. With the very basis of this
distinguished establishment dating back
to the early 1700s, and its equally historic
setting within the Grade II listed building,
meant there were certain parameters
to which the designers had to adhere. The
magnificent room is lined with notable
portraits that had to remain in place and there
were strict rules around lighting and fixtures
and fittings - no holes could be drilled in the
walls or ceilings.
Yet in spite of the restrictions the result
is breath taking. The former drawing
room at the heart of this heritage building
has been dramatically lit and styled with
a contemporary flourish that gives it an
ethereal quality and a wonderful ambiance.
Its central situation allows easy access
for both members and visitors alike thus
increasing footfall.
The entire room has been beautifully
curated. All the original features including
the elaborate ceiling cornice, the pristine
parquet flooring, the exquisite glass
lanterns, the ornate wall panels and the
four immense portrait paintings remain.
They create a stunning backdrop for the
bespoke shopfittings and vast merchandise
collections.
A certain amount of original furniture was
also retained within this newly refurbished
and repurposed space; a round wood table
is topped with a circular glass display stand
and showcases a range of Freemasons’
literature and memorabilia that help unlock
the mysteries of this organisation.
The remaining cabinetry has been
sympathetically crafted, following the
perimeter its angular framework mirrors the
wall panels and frames the product just as
the wall panels frame the pictures. In places
tall, narrow shelving stands rise up either
side of the oil paintings, making great use of
available space, though not detracting from
the giant-sized artworks. Although on first
22 – FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @SHOPANDDISPLAY
be built in, all are freestanding to comply
with listed building regulations. The
elegant pieces have integral lighting that
draws attention to the choice items on
show. Once inside this divine interior the
displays and merchandise meld perfectly.
Central freestanding display tables are all
low level and afford uninterrupted views
across the space. At the far end an area
has been designated for members and
very much resembles a Savile Row tailors.
A formidable centrepiece rising up to the
lofty ceiling heights has been created
using a variety of props and accessories
to display the required attire for the
Masonic gentleman. Its perimeter is
lined with a mixture of fixtures equipped
with either shelves or hooks for shirts,
ties, aprons and all other paraphernalia
with which a member may choose to
accessorise.
The finished interior has an air of mystery
and intrigue whilst also delivering a
beautifully created retail space that has
timeless appeal. This enhances its dual
purpose as premier retailer for masonic
regalia and museum and visitor attraction
for people from all over the world.
The shop succeeds in bringing this
ancient custom into modern times and
was recently voted ‘Best Shop’ by the
Cultural Enterprises Awards 2021. The
organisation also created a public bar and
café, and launched digital tours. They
are definitely conquering the society’s
guarded stereotype.

WAKEFIELDS JEWELLERS
In the South East corner of the UK yet
another retail success story presents
itself. In spite of the long period of
instability that Covid brought us, this
independent retailer has launched an
outstanding new flagship to help drive
sales and secure its future in the industry.
Based in the delightful market town of
Horsham in West Sussex, this fourth
generation family jewellers enlisted the
help of designers, Innovare, to create
a truly inspirational interior. What
started as a pre-Covid concept was fully
realised after the last UK lockdown. The
new showroom is elegant and bold,
flamboyant and plush. An innovative,
experience rich store that draws
inspiration from its heritage and one that
they hope will appeal to customers old
and new alike.
Seemingly more 5* luxury boutique
hotel than high street store, it combines
sumptuous fabrics in vibrant colours with
opulent marble floors and counter tops,
plus gilt edging to fixtures, fittings and
accessories. This quality interior houses
a Rolex showroom, numerous distinctly
curated display zones, multiple comfy
lounging areas and a fabulous hospitality
bar.
Whilst each area is made unique through
a clever use of materials and finishes,
they blend together perfectly. By far
the greatest influence is the art deco
shopfront that has been prominent on the
high street since 1930. Wakefields
Jewellers is very proud of its longevity
Photography: Toby Phillips
and wanted to instil this into the new
concept, whilst combining it with
contemporary design elements. From
the terrazzo entrance foyer to the refined
bronze details on the bespoke cabinetry,
the styling of mirrors and screens to
the interior cornicing, there are many
references to its heritage.
Other original architectural features have
also been restored, such as the skylights
which draw in extra daylight. Within
the Rolex room the skylight has been
adapted to include false day lighting,
thus enabling the floors above to be
repurposed for offices and a workshop.
A large ornate chandelier takes pride
of place, again following the Art Deco
theme, whilst behind the welcome bar
much loved 1930s display cabinets were
artfully replicated. Glass showcases,
mirrored walls, spot lighting together with
feature pendant lights, marble flooring
and exquisitely crafted display furniture
unfold before your eyes. The entire shop
is highly polished and very refined.
The Rolex showroom is to your right
on entering; the area is richer in colour
and is furnished with wooden units
for displaying just the right amount of
watches beneath glass showcases.
Further wood screens and panelling,
wood based chairs and stools sport deep
green covers plus gilt edging, creating
a very distinct, high-end style. Directly
opposite is the main watch sales display
area, which is equally well-crafted and
minimalist in presentation. Next to it
lies the prestigious bar flanked on either
end by decorative, full height mirrors.
As mentioned previously the cabinets
behind the bar are styled on an original
inherited from Boots the Chemist in 1935.
The newly crafted unit is used to store
bottles, glasses, and other drink related
paraphernalia. The fascia panel matches
the unit in colour and has a corrugated
black finish edged with gold at the base.
The seat pads on the bar stools are in
cerulean blue; Art Deco styled pendant
lighting completes the look.
The upper ground floor is accessed
through the main sales floor and here the
flooring returns to terrazzo. This is where
fashion, bridal and bespoke jewellery is
located with sumptuous seating areas
including more private areas for those
requiring a more discrete service. The
main lounge is a work of art in itself with
the intense blue hues seen at the front of
the store repeated here on the sofas and
the surrounding walls. The entire ceiling
panel and one wall panel are decorated
gold. There is little in the way of product,
two gilt-based coffee tables and two very
large and flamboyant pieces of abstract
art adorn the walls. It is an extremely
extravagant space.
Wakefields Jewellers presents yet
another excellent example of an
independent retail triumph. This jewellers
sets the bar really high within an already
glamorous industry.

BALLY
Moving back to London on Regent Street we
visit a fabulous fit-out. Though the biggest
are not necessarily always the best, when it
comes to this iconic shopping strip you can
guarantee an abundance of retail theatre and
innovation.
For many years now Regent Street has
attracted leading global fashion brands and
this next retailer does not disappoint. With a
long, rich history of crafting quality footwear,
Bally has recently launched a frankly
phenomenal flagship in which to house its
stylish collection of women’s and men’s
shoes, boots and accessories.
To celebrate the brand’s incredible 170 year
history, Bally collaborated with London based
creative design and production agency, Seen
Displays to construct a concept that honours
Photography: GG Archard
the Swiss brand’s inherent qualities of
art, architecture and craftsmanship.
Through contemporary design and
natural materials Seen helped meld the
Bally Haus concept, which was initially
launched on Milan’s Montenapoleone in
2019, with London’s own unique heritage.
Bally Haus is their interpretation of the
brand and its core values within the
realms of an experiential environment,
which offers new ways of shopping with a
multi-functional format, including cultural
programming such as film screenings,
panel discussions and exhibitions.
To begin they drew inspiration from
London’s geological and architectural
cues, such as London Clay which is the
bedrock of the Thames and London
Underground’s tunnels. Earthy red
stones, terracotta shelving displays and
natural millwork meet light and dark
marble flooring.
The first thing that hits you when you
arrive at 106-112 Regent Street is space.
Its vast Regency columned façade and
windows framed with decorative trim
lead the way to a cavernous interior that
is understated and sophisticated, that
honours the Bally Haus principles and,
in turn, embraces the classic high end
retailing format. The resulting interior is
beautifully executed through muted tones
and key pieces in zingy colours.
At the entrance, an expansive LED screen
introduces unique 360° content for
digital campaigns and collections. As
you would expect all the elegant, original
features have been retained and combine
beautifully with the simple, modern
joinery that has been custom made for
the store. In some places, large perimeter
cabinets have been slotted between
ornate columns, whilst elsewhere instore
shelving units appear to be carved out
of the plain walls that divide the interior.
The pale timber shelving is encased in a
whitewood exterior framework, which is
then internally lit and unobtrusive, sleek
track lighting trace the line of the intricate
ceiling cornices. The entire store is ivorycoloured
adding to the illusion of space
and creating the perfect backdrop for the
product to shine.
Once again we have stumbled upon a
gallery inspired store design; to fulfil
the Bally Haus concept further Seen

commissioned a local materialist and
maker to create a range of quirky, bold
display tables and stands. The artist
hand-extruded repurposed local waste
plastic into high density polyethylene
and polypropylene to create a number of
highly sculptural pieces of which some
display the product and others form
counters.
A precisely aligned curved brick wall
highlights a low-level display table that
has a sea green coloured moulded top
and four individually crafted mini plinths,
each unique and each displaying a
single item of merchandise. The table
has a cylindrical, shiny base that both
reflects light and mirrors the flooring
on its surface. Each piece is a different
shape, colour and height; they are
staged so appear to climb through the
space leading your eye to the back of
the store, where a collection of perfectly
honed cylindrical plinths, each again for
showcasing individual items are grouped.
Constructed from layers of moulded
plastic in complimentary colours and
reminiscent of rock layers beneath
the earth, these striking objects tie in
perfectly with their serene surroundings.
Bally’s new London concept is
everything they aimed for. It is artistic,
architecturally led and well- crafted
throughout. Step inside and the colours
wash over you creating a calming
ambiance that not only highlight pockets
of boldness but also blend the sculptures
with the space. With the addition of a full
calendar of events and exhibitions what
more could you want from a store?

ONITSUKA
TIGER
Further along Regent Street, towards Oxford Circus, we uncover
yet another luxury retail brand that has opened a truly magnificent
store. It is both the largest in the world for this global retailer and the
first to stock their entire collection of childrenswear, menswear and
womenswear in one shop.
From its glorious Georgian façade to its sparse minimal interior, this
fashion led emporium positions itself at the pinnacle of high end retail
and as with our previous fitouts, flaunts the gallery style store format
with flair. Onitsuka’s megastore is the ultimate representation of their
philosophy for fusing tradition and innovation. This much acclaimed
brand has a very long history dating back to 1949 that encompasses
the Asics brand.
Other than window display graphics and the
product itself, there is minimal colour in this
contemporary fitout. From outside to inside, the
store façade and its London surroundings merge
seamlessly with the interior design. The concept
is elegant and stylish so as not to detract from the
product. The vast expanse of marble used within
the store – the entire ground floor is encased in
various marble finishes - enhances the feeling of
longevity and dependability.
Additionally, on the ground floor elegant glass
shelves are inserted into the perimeter walls and
contrast beautifully with the dark, exceedingly
low level seating benches. At the heart of the
sales floor is a vast circular marble shoe wall
display, reaching from floor to ceiling; constructed
using three different types of marble. Shoes
are displayed in regimented rows above and
below one another around its circumference.
The shelves appear to be carved into the marble.
Another impressive feature is a vast pillar of light
that fuses the two floors together. This formidable
centrepiece consists of two colours of light;
positioned to the left of the entrance it sets the
tone of this incredible store. The clothes rails
have an open construction using metal bars and
sheets to create stylish, contemporary units that
appear to float in the windows and throughout the
store. The clothing is artfully arranged with colour
in mind and a less is more mantra. Discrete,
overhead track lighting is suspended from the
cavernous ceiling and adds a brilliant glow to the
natural daylight that floods through the enormous
windows. The overall effect is suitably stunning.
At the rear of the store a mezzanine floor has
been constructed and the areas above and below
naturally have lowered ceilings. Square and
angular shaped furniture, fixtures and fittings are
repeated throughout the space. The area is filled
with low level leather-clad angular seating and
shiny topped, mid height square display units.
Further, enormous wall panels that also appear
to be sunken into the perimeter house a limited
quantity of immaculately merchandised footwear
on sleek, glass shelves. An equally select range
of clothing is showcased within another perimeter
recess. A massive white column rises to full
height in the centre of the area around which the
entire floor and its contents seem to hinge. The
space is flooded with light diffused from multiple
overhead, square ceiling panels.
The entire collection including its contemporary
collection, the Nippon Made series and its luxury
line, The Onitsuka, are showcased on ground level.
Down in the basement, rather than being dark and
dreary, feels how I imagine a spaceship would
feel – out of this world, blindingly bright and
fantastically futuristic. The design encapsulates
minimalism, even more than upstairs. The below
ground has been designated as a showroom
space and gallery, where local and international
artists can display their work and Onitsuka will
deliver a variety of experiences that connect the
brand with London culture.
This classy environment that plays homage to
this quality brand is undeniably a great place to
dwell. Onitsuka has launched into our hearts with
this cutting edge emporium which in turn resides
at the heart of our capital’s most discerning
shopping street.

MANGO
As always London attracts multiple large
and small retail chains from around the
globe that provide us with a plethora
of grand retail openings from which
to select our latest and greatest! Now
we visit another megastore joining the
eclectic line-up on what is arguably the
world’s busiest shopping street, Oxford
Street.
It is the first Mango store in the
UK to feature the company’s new
Mediterranean-inspired store concept
introduced earlier this year. This leading
Spanish brand brings the warmth of the
sun, the softness of the sand and the
romance of the sea to this iconic retail
road. Mango showcases its entire range
of kidswear, womenswear, menswear,
homeware and teens in one enormous
flagship store spread over three floors.
As with most of London’s retail premises,
this fashion behemoth is housed
within a period building that has been
adapted to convey a bold contemporary
style. Ground floor windows have been
simplified to full height glass panes,
including expansive glass doors at the
entrance. Any instore decorative features
have been replaced with white walls,
ceilings and floors - a blank canvas to
which the clothing colours take centre
stage.
The store is warm and inviting, stylish
and uncluttered. As you enter at ground
level wooden slats stretch the length and
breadth of the ceiling, running parallel
to the storefront they cast a warm glow
onto the shopfloor below. The overall
design feels relaxed and informal, yet is
laid out on a grid system much like the
streets and squares found in a Spanish
city. Mannequins are utilised to display
the clothing and accessories and are
positioned alongside gigantic terracotta
pots planted with olive trees, which add
interest and soften the space. Towards
the rear of the store a series of curved
arches lead through to other departments
and you can glimpse golden-coloured
backdrops that enrich the tones and
enliven the space. Lighting is mostly
track or spotlight, either suspended from
or inset into the ceiling. This emits high
intensity levels of light just as you would
expect to find in southern Europe.
As with Onitsuka, shopfittings are
unobstructive; they are constructed in
a very open style and are positioned
both around the perimeter as well as
freestanding. All of the freestanding
display rails and tables are low-level,
only the mannequins and potted plants
interrupt your line of sight and break away
from the well formulated interior.
The Mediterranean theme and
contemporary styling continue across
the three levels with certain variations
and layers of interest added in different
zones. The fitting rooms are tucked away
behind one of the sales counters. The
entire area being cunningly disguised

behind a wood clad wall, thus deepening
the natural feel instore and providing
a focal point of reference. Another
archway leads to an area that has a highly
decorative, tile clad wall in similar syrupy
shades that also greatly enhances the
warmth and intrigue.
This is a delightful environment, the
interior and its contents have been very
carefully considered and thoughtfully
presented. Once again, all the fixtures
and fittings are freestanding to allow
for continual change and to bring
versatility. They are also decidedly well
merchandised and there is plenty of
space to roam. Whilst the hanging rails
and shelving are modest, the wooden
display tables deliver an air of quality
where we find clothing neatly folded and
accessories styled accordingly.
Another focus of this store is its
environmental bias. Sustainability,
energy efficiency and architectural
integration are key elements in its design
and construction. Energy-efficient
lighting and temperature control systems
as well as sustainable materials, such as
natural paints, are just some of the ways
that they have fulfilled their commitment
to saving our planet. They are also
equally committed to their omni-channel
presence and as such they have installed
a dedicated click and collect station.
All in all, Mango has created a delectable
interior rich in ambiance and flair.

PROJECT:
TOMMY
HILFIGER
For our final store review we cross to
Europe where a formidable flagship has
just opened on Boulevard des Capucine
in Paris, France. This global brand
continuously adapts and evolves to meet
the needs of its discerning customers
delivering innovative and fully immersive,
experience rich stores time and again.
As with many of this year’s reviews this
fitout is eclectic, seamlessly blending the
old and new. However, the cutting-edge
concept also cleverly fuses the virtual
with the physical realms of retail.
Tommy Hilfiger is sited right at the heart
of an historic Parisian quarter that more
recently is famed for its exceptional mix
of high end national and international
retail and fine dining cuisine.
The period building, a former 19th
century bank within which Tommy
resides, has been sympathetically
restored. Key features incorporated
into the new store design such as
columns, which have been clad using
vivid glass paint to help identify and
direct customers to particular areas and
full height ceilings, which have been
curtained to soften the space and link
the floor to ceiling become eye catching
displays in their own right.
Tommy Hilfiger is renowned for its
polished and accomplished designs,
and this latest Parisian concept is both
a visual delight as well as state of the
art - it is enhanced with some very adept
digital technology. The impressive
immersive screen near the entrance is
equipped with Endless Aisle software
which allows the customer to browse
its entire collections, while the style
scanner has the capability to suggest
complementary clothing, shoes and
accessories to your favourite piece by
simply scanning your barcode. The
fitting rooms are equipped with RFID
tracking IT - it is the first time this has
been seen in France. As the customer
enters the changing rooms it detects the
items brought in and offers matching
products that can be ordered directly
from their website. Additionally, an
enhanced customisation desk towards
the storefront provides consumers
with an engaging experience as they
personalise their items.
Heading back into the realms of the
physical, this fabulous fit-out is anchored
by red or navy glass clad columns which
identify the zones and direct women to
the red area and men to the navy section.
Within each department matching
carpets, furniture and accessories,
including planters and display tables are
incorporated to enrich both the depth
of colour and ambiance. The overall
effect is sensational; even the staircase
leading to the second-floor womenswear
department is a high gloss red that
creates an incredibly attractive focal
point. A quaint area at the foot of the
stairs showcases a red, circular rug, red
velvet armchairs, coffee tables and an
ergonomic standard lamp and offers a
sneak preview of what lies above. The
fitting rooms are also fully decked out
accordingly with either red or navy walls,
ceilings and floors. It’s a fully immersive
experience.
The aforementioned lofty ceilings
are outstanding and have become an
even greater asset being fitted with
metal chain curtains that fuse together
the entire store, whilst emphasising
the space. The curtains accentuate
various sections of the store. They
are particularly striking suspended in
sweeping oblongs above the bar and the
click and collect counters.
Track lighting criss-crosses the entire
ceiling. The fixtures and fittings are
naturally of a very high calibre utilising
many mirrored and reflective surfaces
that help bounce the light around the
space and in between the various
shopfittings and props. A mirrored
ceiling has been included within women’s
and men’s footwear departments to help
give the illusion of space, seemingly
increasing the height of the lowered
ceilings; light and reflections dance on
the different structures and conjure a
theatrical feel within these areas.
A people’s bar positioned at the rear of
the ground floor helps direct customer
flow across the entire area. The bar
is finished to perfection, wooden slats
form the base of the counter. Its neutral
tone assimilates the qualities of the
herringbone flooring whose equally
delicate colour diffuses a subtle glow
throughout the store. Near the entrance,
the click and collect desk is equally
muted and meticulous in design. An
array of quirky, mid twentieth century
pieces including traditional American
antiques and graphic artwork complete
the look.
This masterpiece is the result of a
collaboration between Tommy Hilfiger
and retail design specialists, rpa:group.
Their relationship has been ongoing for
a number of years and clearly makes for
a successful and creative partnership.
Another outstanding flagship!
