Face-to-face
In July, the FFAW’s vice-president
for industrial-retail, Allan Moulton,
joined union secretary-treasurer David
Decker and chief industrial-retail negotiator
Ben Baker in visiting processing
plants along the northeast coast of
Newfoundland.
After meeting face-to-face with
workers everywhere from Jackson’s Arm
to Arnold’s Cove, Moulton says it is
clear that an adjustment program for
older workers, as well as finding ways to
recruit younger workers, are desperately
needed in the industry.
Small fish, major impact
One of the few brighter
spots in the province’s
inshore fishery in recent
years has been caplin.
In this issue of The
Union Forum, we head
out to Eastport, Bonavista
Bay to check on this season’s
caplin fishery, and
talk about what needs to
be done to strengthen it in
the future.
