An average day for Amelia
means waking up early for her
favourite meal, porridge, then
heading off to Avonside Girls
High School.
She tries to eat as much as she
can throughout the day for the
much needed energy necessary
to train after school. Carbs are
a must.
“If you’re in sport like me, it
pays to really like eating food
and the right food,” Amelia
said.
After school, five days a week,
she trains for between one hour
to four hours, depending on
what race she has coming up.
She also trains on the
weekend, usually giving herself
one day of rest.
“I do find it really hard and
sometimes quite draining,
getting home from school and
training can be exhausting but
I think I manage it okay. I have
good support from family, my
coach and friends,” Amelia said.
She first got into cycling five
years ago when her father, Julian
Sykes, introduced the sport to
her.
“He took me down to the
track cycling one day and I just
fell in love with it from there,”
she said.
Amelia has always been into
more extreme sports. Before
cycling she was an ice speed
skater.
Elyse Fraser has coached
her for four years now. Amelia
said she looks to Fraser for
races and silver
inspiration.
“She understands me as a
person, she’s also done all the
races before, she’s a very good
coach,” Amelia said.
She has big plans for her
future in cycling. She hopes
to start with racing in the
junior track cycling world
championships in Israel this
year.
“I would like to go as far as
I can, whether that’s the world
champs, the Olympics or the
Commonwealth Games,” she
said.
Having big goals like this
means life as a 17-year-old looks
a little different for Amelia who
still tries to keep as much of a
social life as she can.
“I do miss out on parties but I
don’t find that a bad thing. I’m
not interested in partying and
drinking I would rather focus
on my sport and have my set
goals.
“I’m happy to just be in
everyone’s company and not
have to drink just to fit in with
everyone else like I’m pretty
happy to be who I am and doing
my thing but still be social with
everyone else,” she said.
While she has a strong focus
on her goals, Amelia also makes
sure to enjoy being young.
“There is a time to be serious
about it but there’s also a time
to just realise that you’re young
and to enjoy it for what it is,” she
said.
“It is hard being in this sport
but it’s very rewarding.’’
Teale-Russ’s phone and wallet
were hidden in the car boot and
were stolen along with many other
items.
Despair became worse an hour
later, when she rang the bank and
discovered the thieves had also
ransacked her account.
“I thought I would only have to
cancel my card and then my luck
would return but they informed
me that my internet banking
passcode had been changed 15
minutes prior to this call and
thousands of dollars from your
savings account have been transferred
into your main account,”
she explained.
“They then proceeded to tell me
that several thousands of dollars
had been withdrawn from ATM
machines.”
Teale-Russ said she is shocked
the thieves transferred large
amounts of money, changed her
online banking password and
the pin number of her debit card,
without raising alarm.
“There seemed to be no red flags
in the ANZ department. I didn’t
receive an email notification,
and if I received a call or text it
wouldn’t have mattered because
my phone was stolen.
“You’d think any sudden
withdrawal of $1000 cash from
an ATM would spark some kind
of concern from the bank,” Teale-
Russ said.
