AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA
The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
(APO) is New Zealand’s designated
metropolitan orchestra, serving
Auckland, the country’s largest and most
vibrant city, with concerts and events
throughout the year.
The APO presents more than 60
performances annually. A comprehensive
season of symphonic work brings
Auckland’s orchestra together with
many of the world’s finest classical
musicians, while collaborations with
some of New Zealand’s most exciting
contemporary artists speaks to the APO’s
reputation of being endlessly innovative,
passionate and versatile.
Internationally acclaimed Italian-Danish
conductor Giordano Bellincampi has been
Music Director of the APO since 2016.
Beloved by APO musicians, audiences
and donors alike, his tenure has resulted
in a period of significant artistic growth for
Auckland’s orchestra.
Recent guest artists with the orchestra
have included tenor Simon O’Neill,
pianist Michael Houstoun, violinists
Arabella Steinbacher, Ning Feng and
Viktoria Mullova, cellist Julian Steckel,
pipa virtuoso Wu Man, and conductors
Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bertrand de Billy,
and Xian Zhang.
In 2022, the APO presents a wideranging
and dynamic season featuring
many of Aotearoa’s best talents alongside
debuts and welcome returns of many
renowned international musicians.
The exceptional guest artists sharing the
stage with the APO this year include
violinists Clara-Jumi Kang and James
Ehnes, pianists Kristian Bezuidenhout,
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, and Benjamin
Grosvenor, trumpeter Tine Thing
Helseth, and conductors Gilbert Varga,
Shiyeon Sung and Alpesh Chauhan.
Complementing our international artists,
we are also delighted to showcase
New Zealand-born violinist Amalia Hall,
conductor Tianyi Lu, and APO’s own
Principal Clarinettist Jonathan Cohen
and Principal Harpist Ingrid Bauer
among many more.
The APO is proud to support both
New Zealand Opera and the Royal
New Zealand Ballet in their Auckland
performances. It also works in
partnership with Auckland Arts Festival,
the Auckland Pride Festival, the New
Zealand International Film Festival and
the Australian National Academy of Music
among other organisations.
Through its numerous APO Connecting
(education, outreach and community)
initiatives, the APO offers opportunities
to more than 20,000 young people
and adults nationwide.
Each year the APO performs to
more than 250,000 people live and
over the course of the pandemic, has
reached more than 4.3 million viewers
globally through livestreams and other
digital offerings.

WELCOME / HAERE MAI
Tēnā koutou,
Through the ongoing uncertainties
of the pandemic, we believe in the
importance and power of music.
The last two years have taught us
to always be open to change – so
while disruptions will continue and
our delivery methods will need to be
flexible, this year Auckland’s Orchestra
will be keeping the music playing.
There will be something for everyone in
this year’s Premier Series, which is packed
with a vibrant collection of classical delights,
contemporary masters and breath-taking
musical experiences. Every concert offers
something special to look forward to, be
it a new work by Brooklyn-based New
Zealand composer Gemma Peacocke, an
improvisation on the elaborate Hungarian
instrument the cimbalom, or the dark
emotional thunder of Brahms’ final symphony
– to name but a few.
Our season is made possible by the
ongoing generosity of our supporters, and
we particularly thank The New Zealand
Herald and its parent company NZME. for its
longstanding support of the APO. We also
thank our core funders Auckland Council,
Creative New Zealand, Foundation North
and the Four Winds Foundation. Especially
throughout the upheaval of the past year,
their ongoing support has been invaluable.
Kia kaha,
Welcome,
At New Zealand Media and
Entertainment we are proud of our
long-standing partnership with the
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
and The New Zealand Herald
Premier Series.
Year on year, the APO showcases
exceptional performances featuring some
of the world’s leading artists alongside the
best of New Zealand’s own. We continue to
be impressed by the APO’s dedication to its
art form, and determination to keep making
music available for us all no matter what the
pandemic throws in the way.
At NZME we are focused on keeping
Kiwis in the know. This year’s series has
been carefully crafted to appeal to everyone
from long-time classical music lovers to
those listening for the first time. I’m thrilled
by the breadth of artistry awaiting us, from
the piano concertos of Grieg and Mozart to
the magical soundscapes of Debussy and
Ravel, and don’t forget the daring delights of
contemporary composers John Adams and
Thomas Adès.
We look forward to sharing a fantastic
2022 season with you all.
SHIYEON
SUNG
CONDUCTOR
The South Korean conductor Shiyeon Sung
is a real trailblazer of her profession. She
is the first female conductor out of South
Korea to make the leap to the podium of
internationally renowned orchestras.
When she was appointed assistant
conductor at the Boston Symphony
Orchestra in 2007, she already had a
reputation as one of the most exciting
emerging talents on the international
music circuit: shortly before, she won the
International Conductors’ Competition
Sir Georg Solti and the Gustav Mahler
Conductors’ Competition in Bamberg.
During her three-year tenure in Boston,
she began a close collaboration with the
Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2009,
the orchestra established an associate
conductor’s position especially for her,
which she held until 2013. She was chief
conductor of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic
Orchestra from 2014 until the end of 2017.
After her departure from Gyeonggi, she
relocated to Berlin where she now resides.
Born in Pusan, South Korea, Shiyeon
Sung won various prizes as a pianist in
youth competitions. From 2001 to 2006,
she studied orchestral conducting with Rolf
Reuter at the Hanns Eisler School of Music
in Berlin and continued her education with
Jorma Panula at the Royal College of Music
in Stockholm.
VICTOR JULIEN-
LAFERRIÈRE
CELLO
First Prize winner of the Queen Elisabeth
Competition 2017 in Brussels and the 2012
Prague Spring International Competition,
Victor Julien-Laferrière was also named
the Victoire de la Musique in France’s
‘Instrumental Soloist of the Year’ in 2018.
The coming season sees him appear with
Orchestre National de France under David
Robertson, Les Siècles and François-Xavier
Roth, Orchestre National de Lyon and
Quebec Symphony Orchestra among others,
alongside concerts with David Fray and
Renaud Capuçon.
Victor performs with renowned
orchestras worldwide, including the Royal
Concertgebouw Orchestra, RTÉ National
Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de
Paris, Orchestre National du Capitole de
Toulouse, Brussels Philharmonic, Orchestre
Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Orchestra
i Pomeriggi Musicali, and with prestigious
conductors such as Valery Gergiev,
Kristiina Poska, Elim Chan, Jun Märkl,
Stéphane Denève, Joshua Weilerstein and
Emmanuel Krivine.
He is also developing substantial activity
as a conductor, performs extensively at
prestigious venues and festivals for recital
and chamber music projects, and has
founded his own ensemble Consuelo.
He has an extensive discography and has
won multiple awards, including including
the 2017 Diapason d’Or for his album with
French pianist Adam Laloum.
Victor Julien-Laferrière studied with René
Benedetti, Roland Pidoux, Heinrich Schiff,
and Clemens Hagen. He plays a Domenico
Montagnana cello owned by Joséphine
and Xavier Moreno, and a Dominique
Peccatt bow.
PROGRAMME NOTES
George Walker (1922-2018)
Lyric for Strings
ONE SINGLE MOVEMENT
DURATION: c.7’
The first African-American composer to win
the Pulitzer Prize for music, George Walker
was born in Washington DC and died in
New York at the grand old age of 96.
In addition to his Pulitzer Prize, Walker
collected a whole string of firsts.
In keeping with his musical training,
Walker wrote music that was grounded in
a modern, Western classical tradition, but
adopted many accents of jazz and
African-American spirituals.
In 1946, while still a student at the Curtis
Institute of Music, he composed Lyric for
Strings as the second movement of a string
quartet. Originally entitled Lament, the piece
was expanded for string orchestra in 1990,
retitled Lyric for Strings, and quickly became
Walker’s most performed composition,
resembling even the iconic Adagio for
Strings by Walker’s teacher, Samuel Barber.
American programme commentators
regularly speak of the hope and glowing
consolation that Walker’s work brings,
despite its essential sadness.
Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)
Cello Concerto
THREE MOVEMENTS:
I. Allegro
II. Adagio ma non troppo
III. Finale: Allegro moderato
DURATION: c.39’
Dvořák actually wrote two cello concertos,
though the first was a very early attempt,
born out of his infatuation with a certain
actress Josefína Čermáková. When she
married someone else, Dvořák lost most of
his interest in the work (though he eventually
married Josefína’s younger sister).
No matter what, you could hardly call
Dvořák a fan of the cello concerto. One of
his most quoted sayings was that “the cello
is a beautiful instrument, but its place is in
the orchestra and in chamber music. As a
solo instrument it isn’t much good... I have...
written a cello concerto, but am sorry to this
day that I did so, and I never intend to write
another.’’
A strange comment from someone who
gave one of the most famous items to the
cello concerto repertoire! No doubt what
Dvořák had in mind was the ever-present
problem of how to keep the mass of
orchestral sound down enough to allow the
cellist to project solo lines. In the end, Dvořák
was to solve the problem in the simplest of
ways, by making sure the orchestra rested
whenever the cello had the limelight, and
vice versa.
This B minor concerto was completed
by the mid-1890s, while Dvořák was still
head of the New York Conservatory. ‘New
world’ and bohemian elements weave and
interweave, and the technique demanded
of the soloist makes it a very challenging
concerto. It is also famous for its stream of
14 DVOŘÁK CELLO CONCERTO

melody, harmonic boldness, and magical
instrumental effects. There is nobility within
it, but there is also wit and rhythmic bounce,
and an eloquence that tells of a composer at
the height of his powers, still excited about
loving an old world while warmly embracing
a new one.
A special connection exists over the
slow-movement theme, which is a variant
of Dvořák’s own song Leave Me Alone to
My Dreams. This was a favourite song for
Josefína, that first love of Dvořák’s, and news
of her death had just reached the composer
at that time. The theme returns in the
nostalgic violin solo towards the end of an
otherwise sturdy Finale.
INTERVAL
Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994)
Concerto for Orchestra
THREE MOVEMENTS:
I. Intrada: Allegro maestoso
II. Capriccio notturno ed arioso: Vivace
III. Passacaglia, toccata e corale: Andante
con moto
DURATION: c.29’
Polish composer Witold Lutosławski
completed his Concerto for Orchestra a
decade after Bartók’s celebrated work of
the same name. Living under the communist
regime of the day, he was forced to
adopt the party line of folk music as the
preferred voice of ‘true realism’. Indeed,
his first symphony (1948) was judged too
experimental, and branded as ‘formalist’
– but Lutosławski was in good company,
since both Shostakovich and Prokofiev were
similarly condemned in the same year.
The political climate had much improved
by the time Lutosławski finished his
Concerto for Orchestra. Stalin had died and
a political ‘thaw’ had begun. Nonetheless,
the composer continued to lean heavily
on folksong.
Right at the start, the Intrada’s menacing
sounds of timps and lower strings are
softened by folksong snatches from the
Mazovia region. ‘Juggernaut’ music breaks
out halfway through, with wide-arching brass
lines and pounding rhythms, but the ending
goes through many soft, chamber-music
moments until it floats out of sight.
The second movement has all the
hallmarks of a lightly-scored scherzo, where
quicksilver strings are shot through with
flashes of solo instrumental colour, mostly
woodwind and percussion. An arresting
fanfare (Arioso) announces the trio section
and when the scherzo material returns, high
instruments are exchanged for low-pitched
ones. Listen for the unique ‘duet’ between
double basses and percussion at the end.
In keeping with the usual concerto layout,
Lutosławski uses a three-movement form,
but here the third movement is twice the
size of the others. The foundation of it all is
the opening eight-bar theme, a Passacaglia
that growls from the depths of the double
basses and advances through the orchestra.
Near the movement’s mid-point, the strings
fade away on a single note, and a vigorous
toccata breaks in, providing a bridge to the
corale. This enters on clarinets and oboes
but leads to a massive statement with
rich, interlocking brass chords and widely
separated strings. A coda, marked Presto,
builds to a stunning close – a perfect vehicle
for orchestral display in the best concertolike
manner.
Music is better with friends
– Join the APO Friends
The Friends of the APO are an integral part
of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
family. Founded in 1981, the Friends help
the orchestra in a variety of ways including
selling programmes at concerts and providing
suppers for guest artists and the orchestra.
Funds raised from Friends events, subscriptions
and raffles are donated to support the APO
Connecting programme. Membership to
the Friends is open to all. Annual dues are a
modest $35 per person and benefits include
newsletters, invitations to monthly Meet the
Artist mornings and, most of all, the satisfaction
of knowing that your contribution helps support
an essential element of Auckland’s cultural life.
