Bernard Devonish, Land Owner on the Rancocas Creek in

1687 sailed regularly back and forth to Barbados from the

Rancocas Creek. Bernard's brother was a Ship’s Captain

known to have sailed from the Ports of Baltimore and

Philadelphia. Back in the 1700’s brigs and such unloaded

cargo from Barbados in the Port of Philadelphia. From these

docks, cargo was loaded into Rancocas Creek shallops and

then sailed the tide back to the Devonish and Other Land

Holdings (todays Rancocas State Park) up on at the

confluence.

Plan

As an example: General Sailing Directions from the Island of Barbados to the

Rancocas Creek. Actual plans would vary in detail. The majority of Captains

and Pilots kept knowledge of the trade and maritime passage ---

private. Word

of mouth passed from generations to generations.

Sample Sail Plan: Sail North-

West from Barbados, striking in two weeks the

Coast (America). Sail North to the South River (Delaware Bay). Ascend the

Delaware River passing the Port of Philadelphia to 40.0000 N. At the “Hens and

Chicks” rocks at “White Sheet Bay” effect safe passage in to the Rancocas

Creek. Allow the tide to sail you East on the Rancocas Creek to the Confluence.

Take the North Fork to Devonish Landing*. Follow the Little Dipper up creek to

Mt. Holly.

Mount Holly Historic District [†] is architecturally significant because of its complete range of

architectural styles. These examples of the development of building in this part of New Jersey

include the 1723 Three Tuns Tavern (Mill Street Hotel; Mill and Pine Streets) with thick stone

walls, a 1733 frame house (211 Mill Street) where Stephen Girard had both his home and shop

during his stay in Mount Holly, the 1736 Shinn Log House (Park Drive and Commerce Place), a

1744 Flemish bond brick house with glazed headers (Thomas CREEK Budd House, 20 White Street), a

1775 Quaker Meeting House (Friends Meeting House, High and Garden streets), a 1775 English

frame house (Samuel Carr House, 111 Garden Street), the 1796 Burlington County Court

House (High Street) of superb architectural design, and the 1810 Burlington County Prison

Steven Girard

Stephen Girard was born in Bordeaux, France on May 20, 1750,

into a wealthy family in the shipping business. Stephen himself

first set out to sea at age 14, and he continued in the shipping

business, which took him to New York in 1774.

His shipping business was negatively affected by the British

blockade during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Philadelphia

in 1776 where he married Mary Lum. When Philadelphia was

occupied by the British troops in 1777, Stephen and Mary moved

to this house in Mount Holly, where they also operated a retail

store. During his time here, the native Frenchman became

increasingly interested in the cause of the American Revolution

going on around him. In Philadelphia, on October 27, 1778, Girard

signed an oath of allegiance and became an American Citizen. In

1779, he moved back to Philadelphia, concentrating again on his

shipping business.

After the Revolutionary War, Girard's shipping business grew

dramatically, along with his wealth. Decades later, he became a

major financier to the United States government for the War of

1812.

Upon his death on December 26, 1831, he left a majority of

his fortune that formed in 1848 what is now known as Girard

C ollege.
