could help<br />
the planet<br />
Habits can be hard to kick. Many people<br />
need a unique catalyst in order to ditch habits<br />
they’ve long wanted to put in their rearview<br />
mirrors. New Year’s Day is one notable example<br />
of a unique event that compels millions of<br />
people to make positive changes every year.<br />
Though it might not be a cause for celebration<br />
like the dawn of a new year, increased<br />
awareness of climate change and its effects<br />
could be the catalyst many people need to<br />
make positive, planet-friendly changes to their<br />
daily routines.<br />
Driving habits are one area where individuals<br />
can alter their daily rounes in ways that benefit<br />
the planet. These eco-friendly alteraons<br />
can be instuted each day by individuals who<br />
want to do their part to combat climate change.<br />
• Avoid aggressive driving. Aggressive driving<br />
is both a safety risk and a threat to the environment.<br />
According to the Oak Ridge Naonal<br />
Laboratory, aggressive driving can lower gas<br />
mileage in light-duty vehicles by as much as 40<br />
percent in stop-and-go traffic and by as much<br />
as 30 percent at highway speeds.<br />
• Avoid idling. Many drivers have long<br />
relied on idling to warm up their vehicles on<br />
cold mornings. However, the South Carolina<br />
Department of Health and Environmental<br />
Control notes that modern vehicles do not<br />
need warming up in temperatures above 0<br />
degrees Fahrenheit. It’s important that drivers<br />
recognize this, as idling wastes fuel and<br />
increases the amount of vehicle exhaust in<br />
the air. Vehicle exhaust increases air pollution<br />
and contains pollutants that have been linked<br />
to asthma, additional lung diseases and heart<br />
disease. A far more effective, and considerably<br />
less harmful, way to warm up a vehicle is to do<br />
so for 30 seconds and then drive slowly for the<br />
first few minutes.<br />
• Purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle. Drivers<br />
looking for their next vehicle can prioritize fuel<br />
efficiency if they want their driving habits to<br />
have a smaller carbon footprint. The Department<br />
of Energy and the Environmental Protection<br />
Agency provide information on fuel<br />
efficient vehicles, and that information can be<br />
accessed at Fueleconomy.gov. In addition, the<br />
EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide notes that electric<br />
vehicles, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell<br />
vehicles, and cleaner burning gasoline vehicles<br />
are among the more efficient and less polluting<br />
cars and trucks on the market.<br />
• Make fewer trips. The Fremont Green<br />
Challenge reports that more than half of all<br />
driving trips in the United States are taken for<br />
social, recreaonal, shopping, or family/personal<br />
errands. By combining these trips, drivers can<br />
greatly reduce their driving miles. Fewer trips<br />
conserves fuel and can reduce air polluon.<br />
A few simple tweaks to drivers’ daily habits<br />
can benefit the plant in myriad ways.<br />

Signs a<br />
roof needs<br />
repair or<br />
replacement<br />
Many homeowners believe a roof is a oncein-a-lifetime<br />
investment. But roof damage can<br />
force homeowners to replace a roof regardless<br />
of how much time has lapsed since the roof<br />
was installed.<br />
The average life span of a roof depends on<br />
when the roof was installed and the materials<br />
it is made from. According to Central Homes<br />
Roofing, three-tab shingles may last between<br />
10 and 15 years, architectural shingles can<br />
endure for 15 to 20 years, and tile may last<br />
between 35 and 50 years. RPS Metal Roofing<br />
indicates a metal roof may last as long as 70<br />
years. However, climate and color of the roof<br />
also will affect its longevity.<br />
Homeowners would be wise to consider<br />
these factors when determining if a roof is in<br />
need of repairs or replacement.<br />
• Roof age: The age of the roof is a major<br />
factor in determining if it will need to be<br />
replaced or if repairs can be made to isolated<br />
damage. Individuals who live in neighborhoods<br />
where neighbors are now replacing roofs will<br />
likely find it is me to consult a roofing company.<br />
Homeowners also can check to see if they<br />
have any receipts that indicate the roof’s installaon<br />
date so they have an idea about its age.<br />
• Grain in gutters: Roofing shingles are<br />
designed to overlap, and sealant keeps them<br />
steady. Friction, weather and atmospheric<br />
changes can impact sealant and cause degradation.<br />
Gutters with grainy material in them<br />
could indicate worn out sealant and shingles.<br />
• Ridge damage: Ridges are spots where<br />
two separate areas meet and often are important<br />
to the structural integrity of the roof.<br />
If the roof ridge is showing signs of wear, it<br />
could be time to repair or replace it.<br />
• Curled shingle edges: If shingle tabs are<br />
curled or cupped, the shingles may need to be<br />
replaced. But if curling is extensive, a whole<br />
new roof may need to be installed.<br />
• Bald spots or lost portions of the roof:<br />
Missing granules and missing shingles are reasons<br />
to consult a pro for a roof evaluation.<br />
• Leaks indoors: Homeowners who find<br />
dark streaks or moisture in the attic may<br />
discover that water is penetrating the roof underlay.<br />
Water often comes in around chimney<br />
flashing. Other water signs are blistering and<br />
bubbling in walls.<br />
• Incoming light: Look up through the attic<br />
and see if any light is coming through the roof,<br />
which may indicate there are cracks or holes in<br />

Just about everyone experiences stressful<br />
situaons. Somemes a measure of<br />
stress can provide movaon to do<br />
one’s best or strive for an especially loy<br />
goal. However, when stress becomes a<br />
chronic condion, it can adversely affect<br />
individuals’ quality of life and even their<br />
overall health.<br />
Harvard Medical School says stress<br />
can manifest itself in myriad ways.<br />
Stress can cause tension headaches,<br />
indigeson, aches and pains, or even<br />
heart palpitaons, and it may affect the<br />
mind by making it hard to concentrate or<br />
make decisions. Many people experience<br />
stress through emoonal or psychological<br />
symptoms, such as irritability or feeling<br />
down. Learning how to effecvely<br />
manage stress is essenal for individuals’<br />
overall well-being.<br />
Exercise regularly<br />
Exercise serves many funcons, including<br />
acng as a potent stress relief strategy.<br />
The Cleveland Clinic says aerobic exercise<br />
releases endorphins, which are natural<br />
substances that help a person feel<br />
beer and maintain a posive atude.<br />
Movement acvies like yoga or Tai Chi<br />
also can relax the mind and body and<br />
promote physical health.<br />
Take media breaks<br />
Overwhelming oneself with a barrage<br />
of negative news stories or constant<br />
information can increase stress levels.<br />
Individuals can strive to remain<br />
informed and still build breaks into their<br />
schedules. Shut off news programs, turn<br />
over the newspaper or tune out of social<br />
media from time to time. The Centers<br />
for Disease Control and Prevention<br />
recommends that individuals who are<br />
stressed out by world events reduce the<br />
number of times they read the news or<br />
check the headlines each day.<br />
Meditate or perform breathing<br />
exercises<br />
Breathing and meditation can help<br />
alleviate stress, according to the<br />
American Heart Association. A<br />
quick meditation can provide some<br />
perspective. If a situation is stressful,<br />
go for a walk or take a few slow, deep<br />
breaths until the body relaxes. Harvard<br />
Medical School also says meditation can<br />
induce a relaxation response, which is<br />
an antidote to stress.<br />
Change negatives to positives<br />
Negative self-talk may increase stress,<br />
but positive self-talk can help a person<br />
calm down. Individuals should practice<br />
positive self-talk every day. Instead of<br />
saying, “I hate when this happens,” say,<br />
“I know how to deal with this, I’ve done<br />
it before.”<br />
A small amount of periodic stress can<br />
be a good thing. However, chronic stress<br />
poses a significant threat to individuals’<br />
long-term health.<br />
