the planet 

Habits can be hard to kick. Many people 

need a unique catalyst in order to ditch habits 

they’ve long wanted to put in their rearview 

mirrors. New Year’s Day is one notable example 

of a unique event that compels millions of 

people to make positive changes every year. 

Though it might not be a cause for celebration 

like the dawn of a new year, increased 

awareness of climate change and its effects 

could be the catalyst many people need to 

make positive, planet-friendly changes to their 

daily routines. 

Driving habits are one area where individuals 

can alter their daily rounes in ways that benefit 

the planet. These eco-friendly alteraons 

can be instuted each day by individuals who 

want to do their part to combat climate change. 

• Avoid aggressive driving. Aggressive driving 

is both a safety risk and a threat to the environment. 

According to the Oak Ridge Naonal 

Laboratory, aggressive driving can lower gas 

mileage in light-duty vehicles by as much as 40 

percent in stop-and-go traffic and by as much 

as 30 percent at highway speeds. 

• Avoid idling. Many drivers have long 

relied on idling to warm up their vehicles on 

cold mornings. However, the South Carolina 

Department of Health and Environmental 

Control notes that modern vehicles do not 

need warming up in temperatures above 0 

degrees Fahrenheit. It’s important that drivers 

recognize this, as idling wastes fuel and 

increases the amount of vehicle exhaust in 

the air. Vehicle exhaust increases air pollution 

and contains pollutants that have been linked 

to asthma, additional lung diseases and heart 

disease. A far more effective, and considerably 

less harmful, way to warm up a vehicle is to do 

so for 30 seconds and then drive slowly for the 

first few minutes. 

• Purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle. Drivers 

looking for their next vehicle can prioritize fuel 

efficiency if they want their driving habits to 

have a smaller carbon footprint. The Department 

of Energy and the Environmental Protection 

Agency provide information on fuel 

efficient vehicles, and that information can be 

accessed at Fueleconomy.gov. In addition, the 

EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide notes that electric 

vehicles, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell 

vehicles, and cleaner burning gasoline vehicles 

are among the more efficient and less polluting 

cars and trucks on the market. 

• Make fewer trips. The Fremont Green 

Challenge reports that more than half of all 

driving trips in the United States are taken for 

social, recreaonal, shopping, or family/personal 

errands. By combining these trips, drivers can 

greatly reduce their driving miles. Fewer trips 

conserves fuel and can reduce air polluon.

Signs a 

roof needs 

repair or 

replacement 

Many homeowners believe a roof is a oncein-a-lifetime 

investment. But roof damage can 

force homeowners to replace a roof regardless 

of how much time has lapsed since the roof 

was installed. 

The average life span of a roof depends on 

when the roof was installed and the materials 

it is made from. According to Central Homes 

Roofing, three-tab shingles may last between 

10 and 15 years, architectural shingles can 

endure for 15 to 20 years, and tile may last 

between 35 and 50 years. RPS Metal Roofing 

indicates a metal roof may last as long as 70 

years. However, climate and color of the roof 

also will affect its longevity. 

Homeowners would be wise to consider 

these factors when determining if a roof is in 

need of repairs or replacement. 

• Roof age: The age of the roof is a major 

factor in determining if it will need to be 

replaced or if repairs can be made to isolated 

damage. Individuals who live in neighborhoods 

where neighbors are now replacing roofs will 

likely find it is me to consult a roofing company. 

Homeowners also can check to see if they 

have any receipts that indicate the roof’s installaon 

date so they have an idea about its age. 

• Grain in gutters: Roofing shingles are 

designed to overlap, and sealant keeps them 

steady. Friction, weather and atmospheric 

changes can impact sealant and cause degradation. 

Gutters with grainy material in them 

could indicate worn out sealant and shingles. 

• Ridge damage: Ridges are spots where 

two separate areas meet and often are important 

to the structural integrity of the roof. 

If the roof ridge is showing signs of wear, it 

could be time to repair or replace it. 

• Curled shingle edges: If shingle tabs are 

curled or cupped, the shingles may need to be 

replaced. But if curling is extensive, a whole 

new roof may need to be installed. 

• Bald spots or lost portions of the roof: 

Missing granules and missing shingles are reasons 

to consult a pro for a roof evaluation. 

• Leaks indoors: Homeowners who find 

dark streaks or moisture in the attic may 

discover that water is penetrating the roof underlay. 

Water often comes in around chimney 

flashing. Other water signs are blistering and 

bubbling in walls. 

• Incoming light: Look up through the attic 

and see if any light is coming through the roof, 

which may indicate there are cracks or holes in

Exercise serves many funcons, including 

acng as a potent stress relief strategy. 

The Cleveland Clinic says aerobic exercise 

releases endorphins, which are natural 

substances that help a person feel 

beer and maintain a posive atude. 

Movement acvies like yoga or Tai Chi 

also can relax the mind and body and 

promote physical health. 

Take media breaks 

Overwhelming oneself with a barrage 

of negative news stories or constant 

information can increase stress levels. 

Individuals can strive to remain 

informed and still build breaks into their 

schedules. Shut off news programs, turn 

over the newspaper or tune out of social 

media from time to time. The Centers 

for Disease Control and Prevention 

recommends that individuals who are 

stressed out by world events reduce the 

number of times they read the news or 

check the headlines each day. 

Meditate or perform breathing 

exercises 

Breathing and meditation can help 

alleviate stress, according to the 

American Heart Association. A 

quick meditation can provide some 

perspective. If a situation is stressful, 

go for a walk or take a few slow, deep 

breaths until the body relaxes. Harvard 

Medical School also says meditation can 

induce a relaxation response, which is 

an antidote to stress. 

Change negatives to positives 

Negative self-talk may increase stress, 

but positive self-talk can help a person 

calm down. Individuals should practice 

positive self-talk every day. Instead of 

saying, “I hate when this happens,” say, 

“I know how to deal with this, I’ve done 

it before.” 

A small amount of periodic stress can 

be a good thing. However, chronic stress 

poses a significant threat to individuals’ 

long-term health.
