major 

BMX 

title 

REPRESENTING New 

Zealand is a milestone for 

many athletes. 

And at just 11-years-old 

BMXer Hollie Tribble has not 

only ticked that box—she even 

got to beat Australia while she 

was at it. 

The Rangi Ruru Girls’ 

School year 7 student was one 

of eight Kiwi kids chosen for 

the Mighty 11s Trans-Tasman 

test in Queensland at the 

weekend. Her girls team — 

of which she was the only 

rider from the South Island 

— were victorious over their 

Australian counterparts, 

winning the Troy Fisher Cup. 

Hollie says making the 

team for the 30-year-old 

competition run by the 

national cycling bodies of 

both countries has been her 

dream since she started riding 

as a four-year-old. She says 

wearing the New Zealand 

jersey and bringing the trophy 

home with her team was “very 

exciting”. 

“You only get one chance to 

do it, because you have to be 

11 on race day, and you get to 

travel to Australia and you get 

to travel with your team and 

make really good friendships. 

I felt very proud and that 

I needed to represent New 

Zealand well.”

Social housing will ‘provide stable homes’ 

CHRISTCHURCH’S newest 

community housing is 

welcoming the first people who 

will call it home. 

Ōtautahi Community Housing 

Trust (ŌCHT) has opened 

33 new homes for single people, 

couples and families in Coles Pl, 

St Albans, on a site that has had 

community housing for decades. 

The modern, Homestar 7-rated 

homes were built to replace 20 

ageing, one-bedroom weatherboard 

units that had provided 

city-owned social housing since 

the early 1950s. 

The new homes are set in 

landscaped grounds with plenty 

of shared space and communal 

gardens. The homes are designed 

to be warm and dry, and efficient 

to run.

Woods and Mayor Lianne 

Dalziel cut the ribbon to 

officially open ŌCHT’s eleventh 

community of new homes last 

Friday. 

Woods noted the project 

was delivered early and under 

budget, in spite of the pandemic, 

but that the project team’s work 

provided much “more than 

bricks and mortar.” 

A home is a pillar of whānau 

development and community 

wellbeing, and Coles Pl will 

provide stable homes for a new 

community, Dr Woods said. 

Dalziel said ŌCHT’s new 

developments exceeded what 

Easter 

some had in mind when the city 

council voted to form a trust to 

manage its community housing. 

The city council transferred 

the property to ŌCHT in 2019 

as part of the Christchurch 

Housing Accord. Construction 

on the new community started 

in May 2021. 

ŌCHT chief executive Cate 

Kearney said the trust will 

continue to provide modern, 

future-proofed responses to the 

ongoing need to help people into 

a home. 

“Community housing is 

needed more now than ever, 

especially as we see the impact 

of the housing shortage, high 

rentals and the effects of 

Covid-19 on the number of 

people in need of a home. 

“More and more people need a 

home, and they want the chance 

to sustain their tenancies, to have 

the security that comes with 

having a home and being part of 

a community. 

“Coles Place has been part 

of Christchurch’s community

years, and the new community 

will continue making a positive 

contribution to our city for

The trust was exploring ways 

to scale-up and bring even more 

new community and affordable

supported into homes from the 

Ministry of Social Development’s 

Public Housing Register.

New course for disc golfers opened

A FOURTH disc golf course 

has opened as the sport’s rising 

popularity puts pressure on 

existing courses. 

The semi-wooded 18-hole 

course at Warren Park, Hornby, 

is the latest course to open on 

city council-owned parkland. 

It is also the first course in the 

south-west of the city. 

Christchurch Disc Golf Club 

chairman Paul Deacon said 

Warren Park was the first of 

15 new fully-specced courses, 

complete with target baskets and 

concrete tee pads, that the club 

wants to install in Christchurch. 

There are an estimated 20,000 

recreational disc golfers in New 

Zealand and about 2000 in 

Christchurch – more than the 

existing free courses in Burnside, 

New Brighton, and Parklands 

can accommodate. 

The Jellie Park course, which 

first opened in 2015, has become 

so popular, hosting up to 500 

keen disc golfers on a busy weekend, 

that it has reached capacity. 

“One of the things we’re hoping 

to do is relieve pressure,” 

Deacon said. 

Hornby disc golfer Stormy 

Phillips is stoked to have a 

course now just two blocks from 

home, saving him the commute 

to Burnside each week. He has 

played the 7.5km course about 10 

times in the last month alone.

“I can now stop by for a 

round on my way home from 

work. 

“I’ve brought friends down 

who live nearby, and they love 

it,” he said. 

Flatmates George Foster and 

Jarrod Lobb said having a course 

close by would keep them involved 

in the sport. 

“We probably would have 

fizzled out in winter if we had to 

drive to Jellie Park all the time, 

so having one here is so much 

better,” Foster said. 

Disc golf, which follows 

broadly similar rules to traditional 

ball golf but has players 

throw a plastic disc (or frisbee) 

into a metal basket, has taken off 

in popularity worldwide. 

Unlike most sports, people 

of different standards can play 

together, which makes it popular 

with families. 

“You can get a family going 

round or even three generations 

going round together,” Deacon 

said. 

“I know a guy well in his 80s 

still playing.” 

Sports activation adviser John 

Furlong said the city council 

hoped the new Warren Park 

course would be a success not 

just for disc golfers but also the 

wider community. 

“We see disc golf as a sport for 

serious users [and] casual users 

as well.” 

Because disc golf was open to 

all ages and abilities, and had 

a low barrier to entry, the city 

council hoped it would encourage 

more locals to use their community 

parks. 

Furlong said Ascot Park, at 

QEII, would be the next cab off 

the rank for a disc golf course. 

Plans for the course have already 

been approved by the city 

council and community board.

Painted wooden godwits for you to find

TAKING A walk through 

Southshore will reveal 57 

wooden godwits, painted by the 

community. 

What started off as a small 

community painting day has 

spiralled into a great godwit hunt 

as locals scout out the brightly 

painted godwits scattered 

throughout the area. 

Southshore Residents 

Association member Maria 

Smolar helped organise the 

initiative, alongside fellow 

members Liz Yuki and Annette 

Bolton. 

Smolar said the project 

stemmed from the association 

wanting to put together 

something exciting after events 

had been cancelled because of 

Covid. 

Avon-Heathcote Estuary 

Ihutai Trust manager Tanya 

Jenkins suggested giving the 

association some wooden 

godwits, made with the help of 

Linwood Menz Shed volunteers. 

The idea was to give the 

godwits to members of the 

community to paint themselves, 

which soon turned into painting 

sessions held at Common 

Ground. 

The sessions attracted roughly 

20 people, including Coastal 

Ward councillor Celeste 

Donovan and Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board member Jo 

Zervos. 

Once people had painted their 

godwits they put them around 

the estuary edge and Rocking 

Horse Rd for others to see. 

Soon after, Smolar was 

approached by a local mother 

who suggested the idea of a 

godwit hunt. She had created a 

map for people to mark off when 

they spotted the birds. 

“We love it,” Smolar said. 

“I didn’t expect it to become 

this big thing, which has been really 

awesome.” 

Jenkins said the trust has done 

similar activities to this in the 

past but the Southshore Residents 

Association had gone all 

out and made it even better than 

she could have hoped for. 

“It is a roaring success,” she 

said. 

“We had to extend it and reprint 

more maps because our 

residents were having so much 

fun.”

were still waiting to be found 

and described the hunt as 

“intergenerational” as it’s not 

only kids who are participating, 

but families and adults too. 

“It’s just been really wonderful 

to see people being involved and 

being connected,” Smolar said. 

“It’s really a community effort 

and it’s been so much fun.”

Leaders in Learning 

Phew, what a Term 1 this has been! 

Just as we were about to welcome in the new school year, 

especially our new Year 9 students and their whānau, new staff, 

and other new students to the school, COVID-19 reminded us 

that life is never smooth sailing. All our plans were impacted, 

leading to significant changes to the way we normally operate. 

Once again, our school community adapted to the challenges 

and barriers we face. We’ve learned so much about isolation, 

masks, PCR tests and RATs, boosters, ventilation, scanning in 

and vaccine passes; while adjusting or cancelling events to 

comply with restrictions on gatherings. We’ve followed all these 

public health measures to alleviate the pressure on our health 

system and to protect those most at risk of getting sick. I want 

to reassure you all that Burnside High School continues to be a 

safe environment to be in. 

Our school, like all schools and workplaces, has experienced 

positive cases and people isolating in households. This has 

affected both staff and students. We monitored the situation 

daily, trying to keep students onsite for as long as possible, 

before accumulated staff absences necessitated a move to the 

hybrid learning model from 15 March. This meant students had a 

combination of face-to-face and remote learning on a rostered 

basis. While our aim was continuity of learning, we know how 

difficult this has been for both students and staff. We know how 

tiring it has been; and that we’d all much rather just be at school 

every day. I am proud of how everyone has handled the changes, 

disappointments, and frustrations associated with this disruptive 

period. Thank you for the way you have responded and adjusted. 

Communication between school and whānau continues to be a 

key factor in helping us manage the COVID situation. I hope you 

feel that you have been regularly informed through Schoology, 

our website, our Facebook page, and emails. Thank you very 

much for keeping us fully informed if your student is absent. 

We are looking forward to returning in Term 2 with all students

Mathematics 

Grady Kenix has been selected as a member of the 2022 

New Zealand Mathematics Olympiad team. 

He will represent New Zealand in the 63rd International 

Mathematical Olympiad in Oslo, Norway in July. 

Being chosen for this team is an outstanding achievement 

as the six students are the elite of New Zealand’s 

Mathematics students and have been selected after ten 

months of tuition, training camps and competitions. Grady 

is the only student from outside Auckland in the team. 

Robotics 

Congratulations to the Burnside High School 

Robotics team who have qualified for the Vex 

Robotics World Champions in Dallas, Texas in the 

USA from 5 to 7 May 2022. This competition is the 

biggest robotics competition in the world with four 

divisions and over 24000 students competing. This 

is an amazing opportunity with exposure to the 

biggest names in STEM such as NASA, Autodesk, 

Google and Northrop Grumman Foundation. 

Volleyball 

The Senior Girls’ Volleyball Team 

won the South Island Volleyball 

Championships at Pioneer Stadium

Group keen to find new

AN ACCOUNTANT, an 

immigration lawyer and a 

community board chairman 

all share a vision of building 

a community facility in 

Prestons. 

The Marshland Hall Trust, 

run by Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board chairman 

Kelly Barber, Sian Ruth and 

Adele Cornelius is looking 

to purchase a piece of land to 

build what will be a space for 

the community to share. 

And to get the community 

on board with its idea, the 

trust has been hosting trailer 

days over the weekends. 

Barber, Ruth and Cornelius 

take two trailers to the 

Marshland and Prestons areas 

for people to drop off rubbish 

before taking it to the dump, 

the costs being covered by the 

trust. 

Barber said people that have 

dropped off rubbish come 

from all over the subdivisions 

and have been “absolutely 

stoked” and they usually fill 

two trailers. 

“It’s perfect because they 

drive down with just a few 

things in their boot, just the 

things you’d want to take 

to the tip but you probably

Steak with shallot sauce 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

4 sirloin steaks cut into chunks 

2 tablespoons canola oil 

freshly ground black pepper to 

taste 

6 each: small shallots, button 

mushrooms, finely diced 

2 red capsicums (sliced) 

1⁄2 cup good beef jus 

4 tablespoons cream 

Directions 

Snip the edges of the steaks to 

prevent curling during cooking. 

Heat half the oil in a heavy 

frying pan. Season the meat with 

black pepper. Pan-fry for about 

3min each side for medium rare. 

Remove the steaks and keep 

warm. 

Heat the remaining oil in the 

pan. Add the shallots, mushrooms 

and capsicums. Saute for 

2-3min. Stir in the beef jus and 

sizzle for a few seconds. 

Gradually stir in the cream. 

Serve over the steaks. 

Yoghurt chicken curry 

Serves 6 

Ingredients 

Sauce: 2 Tbsp canola oil 

1 tsp cumin seeds 

1 medium onion, diced 

2 bay leaves 

400g can whole plum tomatoes 

in juice 

4 cloves garlic 

3cm piece root ginger, peeled 

and chopped 

2 small chillies, seeded 

½ tsp each: ground turmeric, 

paprika 

Chicken: 1kg skinned and 

boned chicken thighs, halved 

2 red-skinned potatoes, cut into 

2.5cm cubes 

1 tsp honey 

¼ cup thick and creamy Greek 

yoghurt 

Directions 

Heat the oil on medium in a 

large, non-stick saucepan. 

Stir in the cumin seeds until 

they darken slightly. Add the 

onion and bay leaves and cook 

until the onion is soft. 

Meanwhile, drain the tomatoes 

reserving the juice. 

Place the tomatoes in a blender 

with the garlic, ginger, chillies, 

turmeric and paprika. Blend 

until smooth. 

Add to the onion mixture 

and simmer for 5min. Add the 

chicken and potatoes. Simmer 

for 5min. 

Make the tomato juice up to 

1 cup with water and add to the 

chicken with the honey. 

Simmer, uncovered, for about 

20min, until the potatoes and 

chicken are 

cooked. Stir in the yoghurt and 

serve. 

Great topped with additional 

yoghurt and chopped coriander. 

Kidney bean curry 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

FLAVOURS: The

mushrooms 

always combines 

well with beef. 

1-2 tbsp canola oil 

1 medium onion, diced 

3 cloves garlic, crushed 

2 tsp grated root ginger 

1 small chilli, seeded and diced 

400gm can crushed tomatoes 

1 tsp each: ground coriander, 

cumin, garam masala 

400gm can red kidney beans, 

drained and rinsed 

salt and pepper to taste 

Directions 

Heat the oil in a frying pan. 

Saute the onion, until softened. 

Add all the other ingredients, 

stir well, cover and simmer for 

5min. Serve on rice. 

Quick minestrone soup 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

2 x 400gm cans crushed tomatoes 

1 litre good chicken stock 

400gm can each: cannellini 

beans, kidney beans, rinsed & 

drained 

2 cups frozen green beans 

2 carrots, diced 

salt and black pepper to taste 

2-3 cups finely sliced spinach 

½ cup grated parmesan 

Directions 

Place the tomatoes in a large 

saucepan and bring to the boil. 

Add the stock and the cannellini 

and kidney beans and bring to 

a simmer. Add the green beans 

and carrots and cook until tender, 

about 5min. 

Season well and add the 

spinach. Stir until wilted. Ladle 

into bowls and sprinkle with the 

parmesan. Great served with 

crusty bread.
