Hollie powers way to
REPRESENTING New
Zealand is a milestone for
many athletes.
And at just 11-years-old
BMXer Hollie Tribble has not
only ticked that box—she even
got to beat Australia while she
was at it.
The Rangi Ruru Girls’
School year 7 student was one
of eight Kiwi kids chosen for
the Mighty 11s Trans-Tasman
test in Queensland at the
weekend. Her girls team —
of which she was the only
rider from the South Island
— were victorious over their
Australian counterparts,
winning the Troy Fisher Cup.
Hollie says making the
team for the 30-year-old
competition run by the
national cycling bodies of
both countries has been her
dream since she started riding
as a four-year-old. She says
wearing the New Zealand
jersey and bringing the trophy
home with her team was “very
exciting”.
“You only get one chance to
do it, because you have to be
11 on race day, and you get to
travel to Australia and you get
to travel with your team and
make really good friendships.
I felt very proud and that
I needed to represent New
Zealand well.”
New course for disc golfers opened
• By Tatiana Gibbs
A FOURTH disc golf course
has opened as the sport’s rising
popularity puts pressure on
existing courses.
The semi-wooded 18-hole
course at Warren Park, Hornby,
is the latest course to open on
city council-owned parkland.
It is also the first course in the
south-west of the city.
Christchurch Disc Golf Club
chairman Paul Deacon said
Warren Park was the first of
15 new fully-specced courses,
complete with target baskets and
concrete tee pads, that the club
wants to install in Christchurch.
There are an estimated 20,000
recreational disc golfers in New
Zealand and about 2000 in
Christchurch – more than the
existing free courses in Burnside,
New Brighton, and Parklands
can accommodate.
The Jellie Park course, which
first opened in 2015, has become
so popular, hosting up to 500
keen disc golfers on a busy weekend,
that it has reached capacity.
“One of the things we’re hoping
to do is relieve pressure,”
Deacon said.
Hornby disc golfer Stormy
Phillips is stoked to have a
course now just two blocks from
home, saving him the commute
to Burnside each week. He has
played the 7.5km course about 10
times in the last month alone.
SKILLS: Glen Bellam (left) putts at the new Warren Park
disc golf course, while Stormy Phillips tees off.
“I can now stop by for a
round on my way home from
work.
“I’ve brought friends down
who live nearby, and they love
it,” he said.
Flatmates George Foster and
Jarrod Lobb said having a course
close by would keep them involved
in the sport.
“We probably would have
fizzled out in winter if we had to
drive to Jellie Park all the time,
so having one here is so much
better,” Foster said.
Disc golf, which follows
broadly similar rules to traditional
ball golf but has players
throw a plastic disc (or frisbee)
into a metal basket, has taken off
in popularity worldwide.
Unlike most sports, people
of different standards can play
together, which makes it popular
with families.
“You can get a family going
round or even three generations
going round together,” Deacon
said.
“I know a guy well in his 80s
still playing.”
Sports activation adviser John
Furlong said the city council
hoped the new Warren Park
course would be a success not
just for disc golfers but also the
wider community.
“We see disc golf as a sport for
serious users [and] casual users
as well.”
Because disc golf was open to
all ages and abilities, and had
a low barrier to entry, the city
council hoped it would encourage
more locals to use their community
parks.
Furlong said Ascot Park, at
QEII, would be the next cab off
the rank for a disc golf course.
Plans for the course have already
been approved by the city
council and community board.
Warm greetings to the Hornby High School
community.
One of the many things our community values at
Hornby High School is the breadth of opportunity on
offer, the range of activities in which students can
develop their talents, their passions.
In a typical year those opportunities cover a wide
range, and the amazing achievement of our rangatahi
becomes pretty obvious when you pause and take
a look. A term 1 stand out was the senior boys’
volleyball team winning the South Island competition.
However, we have also seen junior and senior students
engaged in debating, a record three student teams
participating in this year’s Sheila Winn Shakespeare
drama competition, and a record number of
students (boys and girls) participating in rugby skills
development sessions run for us by Hornby Rugby
Club in preparation for the 2022 season.
We celebrated World Poetry Day a couple of weeks
ago, and hundreds of students wrote poems for their
kāhui ‘poe-trees’ that were set up in each kāhui. The
quality of the work was truly outstanding: it was
adventurous, pithy, clever, and insightful.
We will have two student teams participating in the
annual EPro8 technology competition coming up, and
let’s not forget the EVelocity Challenge (the electric
vehicle design and build competition) in which our
students have done so well in the past few years.
There is some talk of something that might develop
into a student radio station (watch this space), and
students have been away on some exciting senior
geography and history trips this past month.
On top of that, our students aspire to ever improving
academic standards, and our first scholarship winners
in 20 years (celebrated in our last Western News
column a month or so ago) give clarity to that growing
aspiration.
There’s certainly much to excite and engage students,
all supported by our caring and giving staff. Yes,
there’s much to celebrate at Te Huruhuru Ao o
Horomaka Hornby High School.
Emalea and Risha in Year 10 and
Rinoah in Year 9, have embarked on
a fantastic new part of their own
learning journeys as they joined
students from other schools in
Ōtautahi to participate in the junior
debating circuit.
They have been working on
learning debating skills and had
their first debate last week. They
demonstrated our CARR values
throughout, and they were open
to learning. They will join students
from other city schools each week,
travelling to St Andrews College to
do so.
Debating is acknowledged as a
wonderful way to develop critical
thinking and communication skills,
and the personal confidence to
stand and speak in front of others.
These are things you learn by doing,
as many a great lawyer, politician, or
activist, and many a great kaumatua,
will tell you when asked about their
ability to speak out on issues, to
mesmerise from the paepae.
These skills are also essential if
Robin Sutton
Tumuaki
That’s debateable!
Emalea, Risha and Rinoah,
interschool debaters.
we are to develop creativity in our
students. Standing up to speak in
front of others is ‘risky’ for many,
and risk taking is essential to
creativity. This supports our journey
towards our aspiration as ‘a centre
of creative excellence’.
Thanks to Mr Cairns on whose
initiative these three students have
had the opportunity to begin their
own journeys, and thanks to Mrs
Clarke – herself a champion debater
in a former life – who stepped in to
support the group at short notice.
Boys’ volleyball team ride
wave of support to win gold
At the end of three days of competition in the
South Island Satellite Tournament, the Hornby
High School senior boys’ volleyball team came
away as tournament winners with a Gold
Medal.
Through a number of tough games the boys
demonstrated their CARR values exceptionally
well. Their win comes after a season of hard
work with coach Mr Liu, himself something of a
former volleyball star. During the tournament
Mr Liu had been forced to isolate, and so Mr
Richardson stepped in to support and manage
the team. Thank you to both of them for their
mahi with the boys.
Tumuaki Mr Sutton noted that it was wonderful
to see the spirit that the boys carried with
them, and their continued exhibition of our
school values. “It’s great to see this resurgence
of Hornby volleyball again,” he said. He
commented on the wonderful community
support that is growing behind Hornby High
School’s volleyball programme.
Pictured at right: The Senior Boys’ Volleyball
Hornby High School athletes can
now train and jump on new long
jump run-ups and pits, thanks to the
good work and generous support
of Josh Hastie and the team from
Waitohu Limited Contracting.
Having done four decades of good
service, the old facilities were well
past their “use by” date.
Funding provided by Kiwi
Gaming, and Mainland
Foundation covered most
of the project cost, but
facing a shortfall, Josh of
Waitohu Ltd kindly offered
to complete the project at
his own expense in order
to see that our students
were able to experience
the best of facilities.
Josh and Waitohu are
Hornby locals, and
Josh said he was “keen
to support my local
community”. This work
nearly completes the
Our girls’ volleyball team competed at South
Island tournament
The Hornby High School senior girls’ volleyball
team had a great South Island tournament this
last week.
A series of hard-fought games against skilled
opponents tested them every day.
Of the girls’ efforts, coach Ane Tatu had this to
say: “The girls gave it their all... As an ex-student
of Hornby High School, it was a fun and interesting
experience for me to be on the other side
managing and coaching a team. The girls should
be walking away from this tournament with their
heads held high and proud of their efforts on the
courts.”
The girls have set great base for the development
of the team next season, and we are all very
proud of them and their hard work.
Pictured: The girls’ volleyball team who
competed at the South Island tournament.
available for students.
Josh and the team are
available for contracting
work, and given their
generosity and the quality
of their work we would
definitely recommend them.
They have ensured that
athletics continues to be
well resourced at Hornby
High School. Thank you
also to Kiwi Gaming, and
Mainland Foundation, for
their support.

Community rallies in support of food bank
• By Emily Moorhouse
AFTER TAKING a step back
due to the tragic loss of their
baby, the couple running a food
bank are humbled by the support
since reopening.
The Websters are well-known
in the community for running
the Hoon Hay Food Bank, and
after losing their baby Laurentian,
they took some time off to
be with family.
Before he passed away on
March 11, Laurentian spent his
first 102 days in the neonatal
intensive care unit, while the
Websters juggled the food bank.
Last week it opened its doors
again to provide food to those
in need and the community was
more than happy to help out in
any way they could.
Over the weekend, people
headed down to the Hoon Hay
Community Centre to support
to the Webster family by participating
in a food drive.
The Webster family were
humbled by the support from the
community and managed
to take home a car load of food
to restock the food bank’s
shelves.
Food bank founder Corrin
Webster said they’ve been supported
in both their private
life and through the food bank
before they even reopened.
“It’s always amazing to see the
community get behind us,” he
said.
“We’re really lucky to have so
many people in our community
who are behind us and supporting
us.”
Webster used the food
bank’s Facebook page to announce
their reopening and said
they received a lot of messages
from people asking what they
needed.
He said they have been flat out
since reopening, giving out an
average of 40 food parcels a day.
“We’re so busy that we’re going
through more food than we ever
have so we’re going to be looking
at doing more drives this year
and finding new ways to get
more sources because we just
can’t keep up,” Webster said.
“The more [food] we get, we
can up the numbers of how many
people we can take each day.”
Hoon Hay Community Association
member Daniel Hay
helped organise the food drive
and said it was inspiring to see
how many people came to support
the Webster family.
“I’m always moved by the
generosity of the Hoon Hay
community. People know Corrin
and Nicole and they really want
to support them especially now,”
Hay said.
“The fact that they’re doing
all of this out of their house in
their own time especially now
after losing Laurentian, we really
wanted to get around them and
support them in any way we
Hay said he was really
happy with the turnout of the
food drive and planned to hold
another one in June.
“There’s some really incredible
people in our community and
Corrin and Nicole are really
good examples of the generosity
of Hoon Hay,” he said.
“Their hearts really are for the
Painted wooden godwits for you to find
• By Emily Moorhouse
TAKING A walk through
Southshore will reveal 57
wooden godwits, painted by the
community.
What started off as a small
community painting day has
spiralled into a great godwit hunt
as locals scout out the brightly
painted godwits scattered
throughout the area.
Southshore Residents
Association member Maria
Smolar helped organise the
initiative, alongside fellow
members Liz Yuki and Annette
Bolton.
Smolar said the project
stemmed from the association
wanting to put together
something exciting after events
had been cancelled because of
Covid.
Avon-Heathcote Estuary
Ihutai Trust manager Tanya
Jenkins suggested giving the
association some wooden
godwits, made with the help of
Linwood Menz Shed volunteers.
The idea was to give the
godwits to members of the
community to paint themselves,
which soon turned into painting
sessions held at Common
Ground.
The sessions attracted roughly
20 people, including Coastal
Ward councillor Celeste
Donovan and Coastal-Burwood
Community Board member
Jo Zervos.
Once people had painted their
godwits they put them around
the estuary edge and Rocking
Horse Rd for others to see.
Soon after, Smolar was
approached by a local mother
who suggested the idea of a
godwit hunt.
She had created a map for
people to mark off when they
spotted the birds.
“We love it,” Smolar said.
“I didn’t expect it to become
this big thing, which has been
really awesome.”
Jenkins said the trust has
done similar activities to this
in the past but the Southshore
Residents Association had gone
all out and made it even better
than she could have hoped for.
“It is a roaring success,” she
said.
“We had to extend it and reprint
more maps because our
residents were having so much
fun.”
Smolar said some godwits
were still waiting to be found
Boxall spot a godwit while
on a bike ride.
and described the hunt as
“intergenerational” as it’s not
only kids who are participating,
but families and adults too.
“It’s just been really wonderful
to see people being involved
and being connected,” Smolar
said.
“It’s really a community effort
and it’s been so much fun.”
The pour of the roof for Lincoln University’s new flagship science facility was
under way last week. Construction began February last year and is expected to be
completed mid-2023. It is part of a $200 million campus development programme,
with $80 million of Crown-funding for the facility itself. A university spokesperson said
construction was progressing well, on schedule, with no supply issues at this stage.
The facility will feature state-of-the-art teaching, research and collaboration spaces
complemented by multi-use adjustable workstations and social zones, set within a
regenerative and bio-diverse park-like environment. The start of the building project
capped off a 10-year journey for the university, beginning with the earthquakes in
2010 and 2011 and concluding with formal Government approval for the facility’s
construction.
Leaders in Learning
Phew, what a Term 1 this has been!
Just as we were about to welcome in the new school year,
especially our new Year 9 students and their whānau, new staff,
and other new students to the school, COVID-19 reminded us
that life is never smooth sailing. All our plans were impacted,
leading to significant changes to the way we normally operate.
Once again, our school community adapted to the challenges
and barriers we face. We’ve learned so much about isolation,
masks, PCR tests and RATs, boosters, ventilation, scanning in
and vaccine passes; while adjusting or cancelling events to
comply with restrictions on gatherings. We’ve followed all these
public health measures to alleviate the pressure on our health
system and to protect those most at risk of getting sick. I want
to reassure you all that Burnside High School continues to be a
safe environment to be in.
Our school, like all schools and workplaces, has experienced
positive cases and people isolating in households. This has
affected both staff and students. We monitored the situation
daily, trying to keep students onsite for as long as possible,
before accumulated staff absences necessitated a move to the
hybrid learning model from 15 March. This meant students had a
combination of face-to-face and remote learning on a rostered
basis. While our aim was continuity of learning, we know how
difficult this has been for both students and staff. We know how
tiring it has been; and that we’d all much rather just be at school
every day. I am proud of how everyone has handled the changes,
disappointments, and frustrations associated with this disruptive
period. Thank you for the way you have responded and adjusted.
Communication between school and whānau continues to be a
key factor in helping us manage the COVID situation. I hope you
feel that you have been regularly informed through Schoology,
our website, our Facebook page, and emails. Thank you very
much for keeping us fully informed if your student is absent.
We are looking forward to returning in Term 2 with all students
and staff back onsite! I am confident that we will deal with
whatever happens; and assure you that every effort will be made
to recover lost time and teaching opportunities. As we begin the
April holidays, we all know what we must do
to continue to keep ourselves, our families,
and our communities safe. It is also a time to
rest, recharge, and take some time out.
Let’s continue working together to make
2022 a successful year.
