Subaru Forester<br />

friend and I were talking about his<br />

new car. Well, it’s not new, but it is a<br />

A late model front-wheel-drive wagon<br />

with a high power engine.<br />

He was telling me how much he misses<br />

the four-wheel-drive system <strong>of</strong> his previous<br />

car – a Volkswagen Passat. He says the<br />

4Motion system that car incorporated<br />

provided stability and surety in a corner,<br />

something front-wheel-drive only doesn’t<br />

provide to the same extent.<br />

I can attest to that, every time I get in a<br />

car with four-wheel-drive I’m immediately<br />

aware <strong>of</strong> the feel that gives you, that solid<br />

connection with the road. There’s none<br />

more notable than Subaru’s symmetrical<br />

full-time four-wheel-drive network, it’s a<br />

cracker in terms <strong>of</strong> how it makes you feel<br />

such a part <strong>of</strong> the car.<br />

That drive system is part <strong>of</strong> every new<br />

Subaru sold in this country and is one <strong>of</strong><br />

the elements that make the Forester sport<br />

utility vehicle such a trusted and popular<br />

model within Subaru’s line-up.<br />

The Forester has just had a facelift for<br />

<strong>2022</strong> and the changes include revised<br />

headlights, fog lights, front bumper and<br />

grille treatment.<br />

The range also gets greater technology,<br />

the Eyesight driver assistance network has<br />

additional functions such as lane centering<br />

monitoring, lane departure prevention and<br />

autonomous emergency steering.<br />

Subaru’s <strong>of</strong>f-road X-mode system has<br />

also been advanced to re-engage once<br />

the vehicle speed drops to 35km/h or<br />

less. There is a multitude <strong>of</strong> other goodies<br />

added across the range including a<br />

driver gesture system to adjust internal<br />

temperature.<br />

However, it’s fair to say the entry-level<br />

model as tested doesn’t get all <strong>of</strong> the<br />

enhancements but, nevertheless, the<br />

Forester as a range hasn’t lost any <strong>of</strong><br />

the fundamentals that have made it the<br />

vehicle <strong>of</strong> choice for everyday transport<br />

and adventure-seekers alike. The latter,<br />

particularly, it is a popular SUV in the skifield<br />

car park and anywhere where that<br />

little bit <strong>of</strong> extra grip is needed.<br />

That well-proven method <strong>of</strong> getting drive<br />

to the road, or any surface for that matter,<br />

is also matched by another Subaru point<br />

<strong>of</strong> difference. The 2.5-litre petrol engine<br />

is a boxer type, or just like my family’s old<br />

Jowett Javelin and Volkswagen’s <strong>of</strong> my<br />

childhood, a horizontally-opposed engine.<br />

As advances in technology would have<br />

it, the Forester’s boxer engine is state-<strong>of</strong>the<br />

art with twin-overhead camshafts and<br />

four valves over each piston. Unlike some<br />

turbocharged Forester models from the<br />

past, the Forester has been sans turbo here<br />

since around 2012, and really it doesn’t<br />

need forced boost, it is a strong engine<br />

and the power outputs reflect that.<br />

Subaru claims peak power <strong>of</strong> 136kW<br />

with 239Nm <strong>of</strong> torque. While these<br />

figures arrive at 5800rpm and 4400rpm<br />

respectively, it must be taken into<br />

account that there is a lot <strong>of</strong> natural<br />

torque developed by the flat-four design.<br />

Response to accelerator request is<br />

delightful with a solid impetus developed<br />

and transmitted through the freedom<br />

<strong>of</strong> a continuously variable automatic<br />

transmission. Subaru has been developing<br />

the driveline constantly for as long as I can<br />

remember, and today’s system is smooth,<br />

responsive, forceful yet frugal.<br />

Along with the elements needed to keep<br />

pace with today’s traffic, the fuel usage<br />

engineers have been constantly leaning<br />

out the boxer unit to a point where today it<br />

is little different to any inline four-cylinder<br />

engine with much the same power outputs.<br />

Subaru claims a combined cycle average<br />

<strong>of</strong> 7.4-litres per 100km for the 2498cc unit.<br />

During my testing time the fuel usage<br />

readout was listing a constant 8l/100km<br />

figure, which isn’t that far distant.<br />

At 100km/h the tachometer is pointing<br />

to a lazy <strong>15</strong>00rpm, the engine merely<br />

sipping fuel at the rate <strong>of</strong> 5.5l/100km.<br />

On the subject <strong>of</strong> figures, the Forester<br />

will also accelerate to 100km/h in 9.5sec<br />

and will make a highway overtake <strong>of</strong> 6.6sec<br />

(80-120km/h).<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the other benefits <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Forester’s driveline is that with the way<br />

the engine is laid flat, much <strong>of</strong> its weight<br />

sits low in the sub-frame. That keeps the<br />

centre <strong>of</strong> gravity low, maintaining balance<br />

vehicles are not ordinarily known for their<br />

handling prowess, but the Forester has tidy<br />

handling manners and much feel through<br />

the steering.<br />

I mentioned that involving aspect <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Forester’s make-up in my introduction, it<br />

keeps the driver fully informed <strong>of</strong> the way<br />

it is handling cornering pressure. Subaru<br />

has revised the spring and damper rates on<br />

the Forester, ride comfort has been made<br />

greater and there seems to be little effect<br />

on the way the vehicle works in a corner.<br />

I’ve written many times over the years<br />

how double wishbone suspension provides<br />

a stable platform and the Forester benefits<br />

from that system at the rear. Up front a<br />

tradition strut system is utilised.<br />

The Forester lands here in three<br />

specifications, but take into account that<br />

there are actually five models to choose<br />

from, two <strong>of</strong> those being hybrids. I’ve<br />

driven the latter and can report that the<br />

hybrid is also a worthy proposition if<br />

you feel like doing just that little bit <strong>of</strong><br />

something for the environment.<br />

As mentioned, the evaluation car was<br />

the base model non-hybrid and it sits at<br />

$42,990. If you like a little bit <strong>of</strong> extra bling,<br />

the X-Sport model adds $5k while and all<br />

the bells and whistles Premium variant lists<br />

at $52,990. The hybrids start at $47,990.<br />

All have the same fundamentals<br />

underneath, and bear in mind that all<br />

variants come away with a five-star<br />

Australasian New Car Assessment Program<br />

safety rating.<br />

My wife and I have been talking about<br />

the vehicle we need to have when I retire,<br />

we can’t afford to run our old Toyota, it’s<br />

simply too thirsty.<br />

There’s a Subaru on the wish list, but<br />

we can’t afford a Forester so I’m thinking<br />

seriously about an XV. It’s just a little<br />

smaller than the Forester and it has just a<br />

2-litre engine, but it’s also a car that gives<br />

you that full-on Subaru feel through the<br />

driveline; that’s a safety element as well as<br />

something that will give you grip when the<br />

worst weather hits Canterbury.<br />

It’s really just a matter <strong>of</strong> convincing my<br />

wife now is the time to get that order in.<br />
