“ For our trational ceremony, Christopher and I wore
a custom woven rich kente cloth embossed with
our marriage logo. I had the kente cloth wrapped
around my body as tradition would have it in order
to stay as authentic as possible to our roots. This
was mainly because of how majestic it looked
when one was wrapped in the rich kente cloth and
embellished with a lot of gold customary jewellery;
it was also a way to connect with my mother who
is a queen mother. This dressing seemed like a rite
of passage into marriage where i had grown into a
woman ready to take on the next step of life. It was
simply beautiful. We looked so regal and powerful
as a couple, ready to take this bold step of marriage
together. This was followed by a change of clothing
into another kente piece this time however, sewn
into a figure hugging gown by Moezni Design only a
Queen could wear to perfection.” Vanessa
“ Pour notre cérémonie traditionnelle, Christopher
et moi portions un riche tissu kita tissé sur mesure
avec le logo de notre mariage en relief. J'avais le
tissu kita enroulé autour de mon corps comme le
veut la tradition afin de rester aussi authentique
que possible à nos racines. C'était principalement à
cause de l’aspect que revêt ainsi le riche tissu kita
surtout quand il est agrémenté de beaucoup de bijoux
coutumiers en or. C'était aussi un moyen de faire
honneur à ma mère qui est une reine mère. Cette tenue
representait un rite de passage vers le mariage qui
me transformait en une femme prête à entreprendre
la prochaine étape de la vie. C'était tout simplement
magnifique. Nous avions l'air si royaux et puissants en
tant que couple prêt à franchir cette étape audacieuse
du mariage ensemble. Je me suis ensuite changée
dans une autre tenue en kita, cousue cette fois-ci en
robe moulante par Moezni Design que seule une reine
pouvait porter à la perfection.” Vanessa

As tradition would have it, there was a request for
her hand in marriage through her paternal uncle to
the family. In response, the bride’s family requested
for a rooster and yams for their Senufo side of the
family and colas for the Fulani and Malinke side.
The colas served as invitation and were shared
during the cola sharing ceremony (worot’lan) a week
before the wedding.
In addition to these items, her dowry had to be paid
for and this amount was used to meet her religious
requirements.
The Malinké tradition was followed for the marriage
between the couple since among the Senoufos, a
proper marriage does not typically exist. During the
introduction, when the rooster and braised yams
are delivered to the bride’s family, the bride if still a
child works in the field of the grooms maternal uncle
until she is of age to be married to her husband.
At this age, the fiancé›s family comes to claim “their
wife” and her husband begins to make visits to her
home by “hiding” until she gets pregnant.
The process of the marriage ceremony takes
place over several days. On Monday evening,
the ceremonies begin where the bride first seeks
forgiveness from her mother and father.
She is then on Tuesday given a ritual bath; this
involves the laying of henna for moms and the
unofficial setting in the bedroom.
Tuesday is therefore reserved for the ritual bath
of the bride which consists of washing of the hair
and body with soap 7 times. The bath represents a
purification to all the Kongnon Mousso to enter her
new life devoid of impurities. This is done 7 times
because odd numbers are considered to be divine
numbers.
Comme le veut la tradition, la demande de sa main
a été introduite à la famille par le biais de l’oncle
paternel. En réponse, la famille de la mariée a
demandé un coq et des ignames pour le côté sénoufo
de la famille et des colas pour le côté peul et malinké.
Les colas ont servi d'invitations et ont été partagés
lors de la cérémonie de partage des colas (worot'lan)
une semaine avant le mariage.
En plus de ces éléments, sa dot devait être payée et
ce montant a été utilisé pour répondre aux exigences
religieuses.
La tradition Malinké a été suivie pour le rituel de
mariage puisque chez les Sénoufos, un véritable
mariage n'existe généralement pas. Lors de
l'introduction, le coq et les ignames braisées sont
livrés à la famille de la mariée et si elle est encore
mineure la mariée est obligée de travailler dans le
domaine de l'oncle maternel du marié jusqu'à ce
qu'elle soit en âge de se marier.
A ce moment-la, la famille du fiancé vient réclamer «
leur femme » et son mari commence à lui rendre visite
de façon secrète jusqu’à ce qu’elle tombe enceinte.
Le processus de la cérémonie de mariage se déroule
sur plusieurs jours.
Le lundi soir, les cérémonies commencent avec la
mariée qui demande d'abord le pardon de sa mère et
de son père.
Le mardi, elle reçoit un bain rituel qui consiste à se
laver les cheveux et le corps avec du savon 7 fois.
Le bain représente une purification pour toutes les
Kongnon Moussos (futures mariées) afin qu’elles
entrent dans leur nouvelle vie sans impuretés. La
lavage est fait 7 fois car les nombres impairs sont
considérés comme des nombres divins.

In August 2021, the historic titles of
Atóbaáse and Yeye Atóbaáse which
means "The one that is worthy enough
to be a king", was bestowed on Dr. &
Mrs. Jide Agunbiade Atobaase as a
honour to them.
This was conferred by His Imperial
Majesty, Oba (Dr) Lamidi Olayiwola
Adeyemi III, Iku Baba Yeye, Alaafin
of Oyo, J.P, CFR, L.L.The King of the
Yorubas.
The conferment was alongside
Hon. & Yeye Shina Peller conferred
Ayedero and Yeye Ayedero of
Yorubaland which means, someone
who brings peace and prosperity to
his people.
En Août 2021, les titres historiques de
Atobaase et Yeye Atobaase, qui signifie
"Celui qui est digne d'être roi", ont été
attribués a titre honorifique au Dr. Jide
Agunbiade et à son épouse.
Cet honneur leur a été conféré par sa
Majesté Impériale, Oba (Dr) Lamdi
Olayiwola Adeyemi III, Iku Baba Yeye,
Alaafin d'Oyo, J.P, CFR, L.L. Roi des
Yorubas.
Cette intronisation s'est faite en même
temps que celle de l'honorable Shina
Pelle et son épouse qui ont reçu les
titres de Ayedero et Yeye Ayedero du
Royaume Yoruba, ce qui signifie celui
qui apporte la paix et la prospérité à
son peuple.

Fairytale wedding | Mariage de conte de fée

There’s a saying that you never know which corner
or angle true love might be found ; destiny has a way
of letting two people meet, fall in love and pledge
their eternal love to one another.
Close to two decades ago at the Voyageur nightclub
in Dakar, Senegal on the 5 th of November 2005, the
couple met for the very first time; for Armand, it
was love at first sight. He approached Anais who at
first sight was not interested; determined however
to know more about her since they belonged to the
same school, got a rose and walked around the
entire school with the hopes of setting his eyes once
again on her. His pursuit paid off and when he saw
her again. He handed over the rose saying « you can
be very clever in this world and i will surely make
you my wife. After dating for nine years, they had
their customary also known as traditional marriage
rites performed,followed seven years after by their
civil and religious ceremony.
Now you would think that after being together for
such a long time, you would know a person so much
and be able to predict their actions, Armand however
proved otherwise when he proposed to Anais at
her sister’s wedding. It was during the evening
celebration amidst family and friends that he took
the microphone, made his request and even gave a
date for the ceremony to take place.
The traditional ceremony took place on August
14, 2014 at the Beach Club in Libreville. The civil
ceremony took place on December 12, 2020 at the
Ianna Gardens for the celebration in front of the
mayor and at the Nomads for the evening. The
wedding was planned by Samantha from Shine
Events, Gabon.
Il y a un dicton qui dit que vous ne savez jamais dans
quel coin ou sous quel angle le véritable amour se
trouve. Le destin a une façon de permettre à deux
personnes de se rencontrer, de tomber amoureuses et
de se vouer leur amour éternel l'une à l'autre.
Il y a près de deux décennies à la discothèque
Voyageur à Dakar, Sénégal le 5 novembre 2005, le
couple s'est rencontré pour la toute première fois ;
pour Armand, ce fut le coup de foudre. Il s'approcha
d'Anaïs qui à première vue n'était pas intéressée.
Déterminé cependant à en savoir plus sur elle,
sachant qu'ils appartenaient à la même école,
Armand acheta une rose et se promena dans toute
l'école dans l'espoir de revoir Anaïs. Sa recherche
porta ses fruits et quand il la revu enfin, il lui remit la
rose en disant « tu peux faire tout le malin du monde,
mais TOI tu seras ma femme ». Après s'être fréquentés
pendant neuf ans, ils ont célébré leur mariage
traditionnel, suivi sept ans plus tard de leur
cérémonie civile.
On pourrait penser qu'après avoir été ensemble
pendant si longtemps, vous connaîtriez tellement
une personne que vous pourriez prédire ses actions.
Armand a cependant prouvé le contraire lorsqu'il
a demandé à Anaïs de l’épouser au cours de la
célébration de mariage de sa sœur. C'est lors de la
soirée festive en présence de sa famille et de ses amis
qu'il a pris le micro pour faire sa demande et a même
annoncé la date de leur mariage.
La cérémonie traditionnelle a eu lieu le 14 août 2014
au Beach Club de Libreville. La cérémonie civile a
eu lieu le 12 décembre 2020 aux Ianna Gardens et
la réception s’est déroulée au Nomad en soirée. Le
mariage a été planifié par Samantha de Shine
Events, Gabon.

Planning my very
first castle wedding
Please introduce yourself
I am Mélanie Wabo, International
Wedding Planner, Certified from the
Weddings Beautiful Worldwide label
and based in Cameroon.
On July 3, 2021 my agency Mélanie
Wabo Weddings had the honour and
the privilege of organizing the wedding
of Lize and Hervé at the Château de
Châalis, a domain classified as National
Heritage of France and it was my very
first experience of its kind.
How did you meet the couple?
Lize and I have been friends for a long
time. We got to know each other as
students in France in 1998, and have
since then remained friends.
What was the client brief, your biggest
challenge and what you learned from
this experience?
We had 3 months to organize
everything, in a complicated Covid
context. In the span of a few weeks,
as the restrictions were officially
being lifted, we went from an intimate
backyard wedding of 50 people, to a
castle wedding with 300 guests.
I had two huge challenges: the first
was to organize a wedding in France,
in an uncertain health context, while
being based in Cameroon. The use
of technology was critical, between
WhatsApp video calls for site visits with
the decorator, meetings via Zoom with
the caterer and file sharing on google
drive with the bride and groom.
The relationship with parisian vendors
and their level of thoroughness (a little
too much at times), made me realize

the level of emotional involvement
Cameroonian vendors put into their
work. As we say at home, "we put all
our organs" into our clients’ events.
But I have to admit that this also goes
hand in hand with the happy mess that
doesn't make the wedding planner's
job easy. There is definitely a notable
cultural difference.
The second challenge was to combine
two roles: being the wedding planner
as well as the maid of honour. Lize was
by my side for my wedding on July 3,
2010, and there was no doubt that I
would be by her side on July 3, 2021.
It was sporty but at the end we give all
thanks and glory to God who made it all
possible. Everything went well, it was a
joy and an honour to contribute to this
wonderful weekend.
What makes it extra special to get
married in a castle?
Let’s be more precise: a castle in
France! There is something inexplicable
about the "French Touch" and just
thinking about it again gives me
goosebumps.
A very special feeling awaits you the
minute you walk through the gates of
a castle. Imagine planning a wedding
in a place that is officially part of the
architectural heritage of a nation! It’s a
big responsibility because you have to
take care of the site and live up to all
the history it carries.
The sound of the car tyres rolling
on the stony driveway, the nuptial
blessing ceremony in the huge park
with endless greenery, the voices of
the choir soaring towards the sky, the
thickness of the massive stone walls
which vibrated to the sound of music,
the reflections of the chandeliers,
everything in a castle helps make the
celebration unforgettable.
Before leaving the place I strolled
around the castle for a little while,
observed the flowers, admired the
mouldings, walked through the
orangery, the ruins and the park,
promising myself that it was definitely
not my last wedding in such an
exceptional place. When you are there,
time stands still. I think that all of Lize
and Hervé's guests will confirm to you
that time indeed stood still on this
unforgettable July 3, 2021.

What was the theme of the event?
Our wedding was about simplicity, elegance
and privacy.
Tell us how and where you met
We met in 2009 on a university campus, during
our studies in Angers: Scott was in the 1 st year of
engineering school and I in the 1 st year of DUT.
The very first glance was exchanged within the
CROUS (organization responsible for simplifying the
daily life of the students).
Then, a second meeting at a bus stop, Scott going
to ESEO and I going to IUT. Finally, a third meeting
during a meal with several other Gabonese students,
started everything. From that moment on, we
became friends, spent a lot of time together and
decided through the expression of our romantic
feelings, not to leave each other.
How long did you spend together before deciding
to unite for eternity?
In total, we have been together as a couple for
eleven years. "We wanted to take the time" to
complete our studies and have a stable professional
life. This would enable us better align our values to
each other and the future we were planning.
Tell us about the proposal and the events
that followed
Scott proposed to me in July 2018, at Île aux Moines
in Brittany, in a beach house by the sea.
We had rented this house for a weekend with friends
to host a surprise birthday party for his 30 th birthday,
except that it was a surprise within another surprise!
Quel était le thème de l'événement ?
Notre mariage était axé sur la simplicité, l'élégance
et l'intimité.
Dites-nous comment et où vous vous êtes
rencontrés
Nous nous sommes rencontrés en 2009 à l'université,
lors de nos études à Angers : Scott était en 1ère année
d'école d'ingénieur et moi en 1ère année de DUT.
Le tout premier regard a été échangé au sein du
CROUS (organisme chargé de simplifier le quotidien
des étudiants).
Puis, un deuxième rendez-vous à un arrêt de bus, Scott
allant à l'ESEO et moi à l'IUT. Enfin, une troisième
rencontre lors d'un repas avec plusieurs autres
étudiants gabonais, qui a tout déclenché. A partir de
ce moment, nous sommes devenus amis, avons passé
beaucoup de temps ensemble et avons décidé par
l'expression de nos sentiments amoureux, de ne plus
nous quitter.
Combien de temps avez-vous passé ensemble
avant de décider de vous unir pour éternité?
Nous étions ensemble depuis déjà onze ans. Nous
avons voulu prendre le temps de finir nos études,
d'avoir une situation professionnelle stable et de
mieux aligner nos valeurs.
Parlez-nous de la demande en mariage.
Scott m'a fait sa demande en juillet 2018, à l'île aux
Moines en Bretagne, dans une maison en bord de mer.
Nous avions loué cette maison pour un week-end
avec des amis pour lui offrir une fête surprise pour ses
30 ans Sauf que c'était une surprise dans une autre
surprendre!
