Sumner among traffic
infringement hot spots
ENFORCEMENT of 40km/h
zones in residential areas has
ramped up through police patrols
and speed camera use, with
Sumner figuring prominently
among the city’s top-five
locations for traffic infringements
over a three-year period.
Police data from 2019 to 2021
revealed Nayland and Colenso
Sts rank second and fourth
respectively, while Te Korari St in
Marshland leads the standings.
During that time frame the
number of tickets issued for
speeding in the vicinity of a
school has increased, although
not as significantly as the incidences
of speeding detected on
suburban streets.
There were 188 speeding tickets
issued in the vicinity of schools
in 2019, followed by 201 in 2020
and 241 last year.
The number of tickets issued
after speeding was detected
by mobile speed cameras has
increased markedly from 224 in
2019 to 1181 last year.
The other top-five streets are
Halswell’s Richmond Ave and
Murphys Rd.
Plan hatched to improve rifleman’s
breeding chances on peninsula
NEW ZEALAND’S
smallest bird is getting new
accommodation on Banks
Peninsula in a bid to improve its
chances of breeding successfully.
Titipounamu/rifleman are
rarely seen on the peninsula
because they prefer to take cover
in mature forest and mānuka/
kānuka scrub, but a plan has
been hatched to help boost their
numbers in the area.
Titipounamu (Acanthisitta
chloris) is native to New Zealand.
The males weigh just six grams
and females weigh seven grams.
They are one of only two species
left of the New Zealand wren
family.
The city council, Refuge Ecology
and the Banks Peninsula
Conservation Trust have been
installing predator-proof nesting
boxes for the birds in suitable
habitat.
The nest boxes provide a safe
nesting space in the absence of
mature trees.
Recent sightings of titipounamu
in Aylmers Valley,
above Akaroa, have led to the
installation of nest boxes there.
Observations of titipounamu
have also been recorded in
Robinsons Bay, Panama Reserve,
Hinewai and Le Bons Bay.
“We are seeking sightings
of titipounamu from local
residents and visitors to Banks
Peninsula so that we can better
understand their distribution,”
said city council ranger Hannah
Murdoch, who is leading the
project.
“If you have spotted titipounamu
please record the
sighting on iNaturalist or email
alison.evans@ccc.govt.nz with
the details of where you saw the
bird and when. If you can supply
GPS co-ordinates that will greatly
assist us.
“You are most likely to see
titipounamu flitting up and
down trees, feeding on insects
and spiders. They are distinctive
from other birds, due to their
small size and tiny tail.’’
The male has an olive green
colour on its back, while the
female is slightly different in
colour with yellow and dark
speckles on its back.
They are easily mistaken for
riroriro/grey warblers or tauhou/
silvereyes, although these birds
have longer tail feathers and different
colours than titipounamu.
The call of titipounamu is highpitched
and reaches a frequency
that is inaudible to some people.
Murdoch said the titipounamu
population will be closely
monitored and the team plans
to work in collaboration with
Pest Free Banks Peninsula to
ACCOMMODATION:
eliminate predators that might
threaten the tiny birds’ chances
of survival.
“Titipounamu are threatened
by predation from introduced
mammals like rats and stoats so
we’re hoping to get volunteers
involved in trapping efforts.
People wanting to help protect
native wildlife by trapping in
their own backyard can borrow
traps from either the Akaroa
Trap Library or the Little River
Trap Library,’’ she said.
Community input sought into roadwork
options for last phase of Coastal Pathway
WORK ON the Coastal Pathway
appears to be stuck between a
rock and a hard place.
And now contractors want
people in Sumner and Redcliffs
to let them know how they
would like the work carried out.
Construction of the pathway
has entered its final phase, but
the city council said on Monday
it has reached “a tricky stage”
with contractors Fulton Hogan
busy completing the section
between the eastern end of Redcliffs
Village and Shag Rock.
“Work
is going
smoothly, but
Fulton Hogan
have reached
a 110-metre
stretch that’s
too narrow to
Lynette Ellis
maintain both
the worksite
and two lanes
of traffic,” said city council head
of transport and waste management
Lynette Ellis.
“Fulton Hogan has developed
two different approaches to how
they can complete this section,
and they want to find out which
option the community would
prefer. They particularly want
the feedback of those who live in,
or commute through, the Sumner/Redcliffs
area, as they will be
the most affected.”
Option one would see work
completed at night between
8pm–6am, Sunday to Thursday.
HIKING BOOTS
& SHOES
This would mean two lanes of
traffic can be maintained during
the day. The work would be able
to be completed in six weeks but
there could be noise at night for
nearby residents.
Option two would see the
work done in two shifts each
weekday. The first shift would
operate from 9.30am to 2.30pm
and the second shift from 6pm to
11pm. Traffic would be reduced
to one lane during each shift.
However, outside of shift hours,
the road would be reinstated to
two lanes for peak traffic.
This option would mean quieter
nights for residents but delays
of up to 15 minutes for road users
when the road was operating
with one lane only. The work is
also likely to take twice as long to
complete – 12 weeks as opposed
to six weeks under option one.
“Each option has its pros and
cons, and the people who will be
living with it will be able to indicate
which one they’d prefer,”
Ellis said.
“We recognise this work is
having an impact on a wide
group of people, and we apologise
for any inconvenience.”
Fulton Hogan hopes to have a
plan in place and work underway
by mid May.
Once complete, the pathway
will stretch 6.5km from the Ferrymead
Bridge to Scarborough
Beach, and allow people to enjoy
walking, cycling, scooting or
skating safely off-road along the
coast.
Treated wastewater could go on golf course
THE CITY council will consult
the community next month
on two options for disposing
of treated wastewater from
Duvauchelle, it was decided at a
Three Waters infrastructure and
environment committee meeting
last week.
The treated
wastewater
is currently
discharged
into Akaroa
Harbour, but
the council’s
consent to do
Helen
Beaumont
this will expire
in 2023. It is a
condition of
consent that the
council explores all feasible alternatives
to sending treated wastewater
to the harbour – a practice
deeply offensive to Māori.
City council head of Three
Waters Helen Beaumont said
finding a land-based alternative
was crucial.
“Our planning and policy
framework under the Resource
Management Act is very clear,”
she said.
“Discharging treated wastewater
to water is not considered
sustainable management if there
are feasible land-based alternatives.
“These alternatives exist, so
we’re not including a new harbour
outfall as an option to take
forward – we know it would be
highly unlikely to get a consent.”
Twelve alternatives were
identified and in discussion with
those who stood to be most affected,
including Ngāi Tahu, they
were gradually whittled down to
two options.
Both options for consultation
involve using treated wastewater
to irrigate the Akaroa golf
course, which is at Duvauchelle.
The council owns the golf course
land and it is leased to the
Akaroa Golf Club.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
OPTIONS: The city council will consult the community on ways of disposing of treated
wastewater from Duvauchelle.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
“The golf course is really the
only area in Duvauchelle big
enough to take the amount of
treated wastewater we have,” said
Beaumont.
In one option the golf course
tees, greens and fairways would
be spray irrigated in summer, a
beneficial reuse of wastewater,
with the planted course margins
and upslope tree areas being drip
irrigated in winter.
This would require a higher
level of treatment for the
wastewater to bring it up to the
standard required for spray
irrigation, so would include a
major upgrade to the treatment
plant.
This option would cost around
$13 million and would allow
for any future growth in the
Duvauchelle area.
Council staff identified this as
the preferred option.
In the second option the
planted areas, course margins
and upslope tree areas of the golf
course would be drip irrigated
year-round.
Wednesday April 20 2022 Bay Harbour News
NEWS 7
This would not be enough area
on its own to use up the treated
wastewater so another property
would need to be bought or
leased for irrigation to native
trees.
This option would cost
around $9 million (plus land).
It is less expensive because the
wastewater would not require
such a high level of treatment,
meaning the treatment plant
would need only a minor
upgrade, and there would be no
need for the pipe and drainage
work necessary for the first
option. The second option may
not allow for future growth.
“The team has done a great job
identifying and investigating all
feasible options, and in keeping
the golf club, Ngāi Tahu and
other nearby interest groups
informed along the way,” said
Beaumont. “It has taken about 12
years to get us all to this point, so
it’s no small feat.”
The golf club and Ngāi Tahu
support the chosen options for
consultation as the best two to
consider.
“Some of the options
considered involved reducing
the golf course to 12 holes, or
losing it altogether, so the club is
pleased that both these options
retain an 18-hole course,”
Beaumont said.
Consultation will be held
throughout May.
GAP: Sharks’ Dan ‘Dugong’ Reid charging through the middle.
Sumner Sharks on
the hunt for players
The Sumner Sharks are a
rugby institution, and they
are looking for new players.
Andrea Heffernan reports
IT ALL started back in 1988 when Greg
Digby (Digger) bumped into his old
maths teacher at the Cave Rock Hotel.
His teacher told him Sumner had a social
rugby team.
Several years later, the Sharks morphed
from a group of like-minded players who
enjoyed playing and socialising together to
a cohesive side.
Thirty-four years later, the Sharks are
in their 27th season. A handful of the
guys are still there from the old days, with
Digger the coach and manager.
As part of the classics division –
formerly 4th grade – they put together a
team on the day.
Camaraderie and family are two key elements
that bind the team together. Players
like the chance to play a bit of footy, but
without the full-on commitment, as most
have work, families and other priorities.
The Sharks played a pre-season ‘friendly’
against the Linwood Bollocks before
Easter, with the Sharks wining the close
game in the last minute 20-14.
“It’s all about fun, the banter and
camaraderie. We put on a BBQ after a
home game for the opposition and their
families. We are always welcomed to the
opposition’s after match function,” said
Digby.
“We have some good young fellas coming
through. We are a diverse bunch, with
ages ranging from early 20s to mid 50s.
We are more like country club rugby.”
He said the players come from all over
town, drawn to “the Sumner club vibe”.
Digger’s passion for the game has
flowed on to his two daughters, who both
played through the grades from under 6
to the under-16 girls’ grade, introduced
four years ago. They went on to play for
Canterbury in the under-18 women’s team
and now play for senior university teams.
The season for the Sharks starts on 23
April and they are recruiting new players.
Trees are a lifetime investment. The
trees that surround your home fortify
your refuge from the world. Your
home is your haven, and we want to
ensure that it remains that way. Caring
for your trees starts with correct
pruning, removal is the last resort.
Trees are pruned or trimmed for
several tree care reasons. Professional,
experienced Arborists can improve
tree health, tree structure, and add
light, space, and beauty to your
beloved trees with correct pruning.
Pruning a little and often is the way
to gently guide your tree to a happy,
prosperous life. There are several
different pruning techniques to get the
most out of your trees.
Canopy lifting involves the removal
of lower canopy branches to provide
clearance for buildings, vehicles,
pedestrians, to enhance views and
increase light. This is a great alternative
to removal to retain your tree assets
and reap the benefits of mature trees
on your property.
Thinning increases light penetration
and air movement through the crown.
It also opens the foliage of a tree,
reduces weight on heavy limbs, and
helps retain the tree’s natural shape.
This decreases the chances of disease
and can prolong the life of the tree.
New hedges should be trimmed
from an early stage to establish a
shape and prevent leggy, unsightly
growth. The amount you prune back
will depend on the type of hedge.
Once the hedge is established, regular
maintenance will ensure it remains
healthy and has a great appearance.
Vista management is managing
Before
After
your vegetation to optimising and
frame your view with properly
pruned vegetation. Healthy trees can
offer many benefits to your property
including adding to the market value
of a property as well as privacy.
However, as they become larger,
they can obscure a desirable view.
Some of the most beautiful views in
New Zealand can be found on Banks
Peninsula. Attempting to maintain
these views is one of the main reasons
people cut or top trees, which can
cause bigger problems than they solve.
Our passionate team has the
experience to work as quickly and as
safely as possible. We can perform all
aspects of arboricultural care for your
trees.
ANZAC DAY
MONDAY APRIL 25, 2022
Remembering our Anzacs
“The darkness, calm and chill of the early morning; the sound of
the single tap of the drum of the parade; the emotionless faces
of the catafalque guard, and the mournful notes of Last Post
sounded by a lone bugler, combine to give a feeling of deep
solemnity. It is the intensity of the symbolism which contributes
to its powerful impact upon participants; indeed what underlies its
popularity. In a country with few public rituals, the Dawn Service
continues to provide a sense of occasion as a meaningful ritual of
remembrance.”
Every year Anzac Day is observed on April 25 by communities
throughout New Zealand and Australia to remember those who have
served and those who lost their lives in war. The term ANZAC is the
acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and was first
used in World War 1. These groups of soldiers back then were known
as ‘the Anzacs’.
Anzac commemorations may consist of one or more ceremonies –
one at dawn (timed to coincide with the initial landings at Gallipoli
by Australian troops who were the first ashore) and/or one later
in the morning. The ceremonies are rich in tradition and generally
begin with a parade of returned servicemen and military personnel
followed by cadets, youth groups and local dignitaries. War veterans,
proudly sporting their medals lead the parade, which leads to a local
cenotaph or memorial gate where the ceremony includes a service
with hymns, laying of wreaths, dedications, prayers and the Last Post
played on a bugle. Morning tea follows and allows people to share
memories and catch up with friends and neighbours.
Anzac Day was first observed by servicemen in 1916 to mark the
anniversary of New Zealand and Australian soldiers landing on the
Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. It soon became a day where all New
Zealanders and Australians took time to remember the men and
women who perished in the Great War. In 1921, Anzac Day became
an official holiday and by 1922 it was declared a full public holiday
where shops, banks and hotels remained closed for the day.
Symbol of remembrance
The red (or Flanders) poppy is a symbol of remembrance and hope
all over the world and, in some countries, is worn on Armistice
Day, however in New Zealand the red poppy is commonly worn
on Anzac Day. The first Poppy Day appeal was on April 24 in 1922,
where funds from the sales of small and large silk poppies helped
relieve suffering in war-ravaged northern France. A paper version
of the poppy is now sold by the Royal New Zealand Returned
Services Association on Poppy Day to raise awareness for Anzac
Day and funds for returned soldiers and their families and local
communities.
‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.’
Having an impact
Sumner lawyer Alex Summerlee says trust and integrity has always been an important
part of the law and they’re attributes clients are seeking now more than ever.
Alex has recently been appointed as a partner
at Parry Field Lawyers and specialises in civil
litigation and dispute resolution. He has
experience resolving complex legal for clients in
and outside of the Courts.
He says there’s no better time for a focus
on client advocacy. “Working in this area of
litigation or disputes you come across people
who are dealing with what will be one of the most
stressful challenges they face in life. It is a real
privilege to be trusted by clients to advise them
on the best way through those challenges.”
He says every case has its own nuances and it’s
an aspect of his role that he finds most satisfying.
“One of the joys of the job is that there is rarely
a dull moment – you’re always learning. The
endless variety of disputes that people can face
means that each case has something new to teach
you about human nature.”
Alex has represented clients at all levels of the
Courts of New Zealand. He is currently acting on
files ranging from judicial reviews of government
regulations, to claims against insurers; from
construction defects and inheritance disputes, to
international custody litigation.
He’s active in our local community, sitting on
the Board of Proprietors of St Mark’s School,
and holding office as the Vice Chancellor to the
Anglican Bishop of Christchurch.
He’s one of three new partners announced this
week by Parry Field Lawyers and says he’s excited
to be joining the partnership because of all it
represents.
“How this firm is carried does not just affect
our staff and clients; that in turn also impacts on
families and each of our communities –as new
partners we will now have a part in ensuring that
Parry Field continues to deliver excellent legal
representation, and continues to play its part in
our community.”
As long as he’s in practice, Alex says he can’t
imagine practising anywhere else.
“It’s a combination of working at a place that
is as interested in your personal development as
it is in your professional development. It doesn’t
compromise on excellence in legal services but
also demands high levels of personal integrity.
It’s just a very satisfying and enjoyable place to
work.”
Alex has lived most of life east of the
Bay Harbour News Wednesday April 20 2022
14
NEWS
ON JANUARY 26, 1888, the iron
barque May Queen rounded
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
heads, inbound for the port
and sailing into a gusting
south-westerly.
With Master G. Colville at the
helm, she’d left London some 91
days earlier on October 26, 1887,
with 733 tons of general cargo
plus 15 tons of blasting powder,
worth a total of £22,000.
This was not her first voyage to
the Australasian colonies but as
the fates would have it, it was to
be her last.
Launched in May of 1869, the
May Queen was built by A Hall
and Company at the Aberdeen
shipyards. Carvel planked on an
iron frame and at 781 gross tonnage,
this beautiful three-mast,
two-deck barque was 54.4m
long, with a beam of 9.5m, and a
5.8m draught.
For almost two decades she’d
sailed the trade and passenger
routes between Great Britain and
her majesty’s southern colonies,
being a frequent visitor to South
Island and North Island ports.
On this fateful day in question,
the paddle tug Lyttelton met
the May Queen just outside the
heads.
Pilot Lewin came on board to
guide her into her first port of
call, which was to be the explosives
anchorage at Te Pohue
Camp Bay, before off-loading the
rest of the cargo at Lyttelton.
The tug would usually assist
in towage but unfortunately on
this day she was also employed
in delivering the mail around
the peninsula bays, and it was
decided she should continue on
her way.
Battling the south-westerly
squalls, pilot Lewin brought the
ship in close to shore when the
winds suddenly dropped off and
she missed her stays, running
aground onto the rocks by the
Red Rock cliffs, just east of Camp
Bay, at high tide.
On returning from her mail
run, the tug Lyttelton attempted
to tow the May Queen off the
rocks but failed with the falling
tide, and the following day she
broke her back with the pumps
going through the deck.
An emergency salvage operation
led by stevedores JJ Kinsey
managed to save about 350 tons
of cargo plus the ship’s fittings,
which were then put to auction.
The ship went for £275 to Messrs
Wood and Sinclair and the cargo,
previously valued at £22,000,
sold for £1000 to a stevedore of
Port Chalmers, J Mills.
Within the week, the May
Queen sank further off the rocks
before what was left of the hull
finally settled into the harbour
waters at about 7m deep where
she remains to this day.
A Court of Inquiry was called
on February 1, 1888, and found
pilot Lewin at fault.
However, his tickets were
returned to him with the magistrates
also sternly rebuking
the Lyttelton Harbour Board
for its diversion of the tug away
from its towage duties, stating:
“We consider that as long as the
harbour board assumes control
of tug vessels in the harbour they
should be so employed and not
diverted from the purpose from
which they were intended by
engagement as mail carriers.”
The 1888 wreck of the May
Queen remains Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour’s only major
shipping disaster. Various items
from her fittings eventually
found their way into Te Ūaka
The Lyttelton Museum’s collection.
These include a rather
flamboyant red velvet settee previously
owned by Captain Albert
Anderson and then donated to
Baden Norris Sr, a mahogany
sideboard, as well as the ship’s
bell inscribed ‘May Queen 1869
Toyota Camry goes all hybrid
ALONGSIDE Corolla, Camry is
one of Toyota’s most successful
global nameplates.
As a badge, it has been around
since the early 80s, its sedan and
wagon body style drawing a wide
cross-section of buyers from both
the business and private sector.
In recent years the Camry for
the New Zealand market has
been available as a 2.5-litre petrol
model, with much the same
engine aligned to Toyota’s Hybrid
Synergy Drive system and, of
course, the powerful V6 variant
that later morphed into Aurion.
Over the years the Camry has
been available with a multitude of
specification options, at one point
there were eight Camry variants
on offer here.
Today, and sadly a reflection
of buying trends that favour
sport utility vehicles against the
tradition of sedans, the Camry
is available here with just three
specification options. The most
dramatic change within the series
is that it is now only available with
the hybrid driveline, which is a
way of lowering carbon emissions.
I like sedans, I like the Camry
as a concept, and if there was
a hybrid in the Kiddie-family
car buying future, it would be
difficult not to choose a Camry,
it’s long been my favourite hybrid.
Saying that, of course, the same
2.5-litre hybrid driveline powers
other Toyota and Lexus models.
For 2022, the Camry here
has had bit of a facelift and a
SLEEK: The Toyota Camry sits low and long.
realignment, there is more bling
in the model, and the body
style has had enhancements.
Depending on the variant,
there is a new grille, bumper
and wheels. Plus, there is more
emphasis in differentiation
between variants. The changes
come at a very opportune time,
the Camry qualifies for the
Government’s low emission
rebate scheme, depending on
the variant a buyer can recoup
between $2748 and $3160.
The Camry hybrid lists from
$43,990, the test car was the
high-spec leather-trimmed ZR
model at $52,490, while a sporty
SX version sits in-between at
$48,490. I’m due to drive the
latter soon, and that would
probably be the specification I
would look for, its sport tuned
suspension and 19in wheels make
it enticing.
However, the ZR model is
there for those who like the feel
of luxury, and it’s fair to say in
top-spec form the Camry borders
on the luxury car market, it is
plush, it has all the fitment and
features Toyota has in its bag of
goodies, and it is a wonderfully
comfortable car to drive and to
ride in. Space is plentiful, the rear
seat occupants can stretch their
legs, while shoulder and head
room is in abundance.
Column space doesn’t allow
for comprehensive detailing, but
major items fitted for comfort
and convenience amount to
TOYOTA CAMRY ZR: Borders on the luxury car market.
satellite navigation, head-up
display, electrically adjustable
front seats that have heating and
cooling, electrically adjustable
steering column, electric
panoramic sunroof and steering
wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
Of course, the Camry also gets
a five-star Australasian New Car
Assessment Program rating, it
has all of the electronic functions
that make up the Toyota Safety
Sense suite of kit.
Under the bonnet sits a fourcylinder
engine. Toyota rates it
with a petrol/electric combined
total of 160kW and 213Nm,
with those healthy figures it is
a powerful unit, it is lively and
feels very torquey. As such, it
feels very normal to drive, of
course it wants to drive in electric
mode all of the time, but such are
the throttle demands that can’t
realistically happen.
The driver is always fully aware
of what is happening in terms
of propulsion, there are a raft of
gauges and displays to let you know
about the hybrid operation, and
if you are astute you can feel the
engine cutting in and out, but if
you don’t take any of that on-board,
you could be forgiven for thinking
that you are driving a standard
petrol-engined 2.5-litre car.
Performance is strong and
the Camry hybrid is quick – a
standstill to 100km/h time of
• Price – Toyota Camry ZR
hybrid, $52,490
• Dimensions – Length,
4905mm; width, 1840mm;
height, 1445mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
2498cc, 160kW,
213Nm, continuously
variable automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8.1sec
• Fuel usage – 4.2/100km
8.1sec is on offer and it will
scamper through a highway
overtake in 6.9sec (80-120km/h).
But the figures that are most
important are those of fuel usage.
Toyota rates the hybrid system
with a best possible 4.2-litre per
100km combined cycle average.
At the end of a week with the
test car I returned it to the
dealership showing an average of
6.4l/100km.
These are good figures for a big
car, and particularly for one that
weighs in at over 1.5-tonne. It must
also be said I commuted daily into
the city centre and that type of
stop-start travel isn’t good for fuel
economy. I also drove the Camry
briskly during testing time, it feels
strong beneath the accelerator and
has handling to match.
In a corner the Camry hybrid
stays flat, at just 1.44m tall there
is little gravitational change, nor
body movement. High quality
Bridgestone Turanza tyres are
fitted, at 235/45 x 18in they offer
high grip levels and provide solid
information to the steering wheel.
Turn-in is direct, while suspension
movement easily arrests midcorner
bumps and deviations. The
spring and damper rates are well
engineered for the rough nature of
Canterbury’s roads, providing the
comfort levels we all expect from
a big car.
The Camry also has one of the
biggest load spaces for a sedan
that I can recall in recent times,
even in hybrid form the boot
space is cavernous.
It’s no wonder, then, that
Camry has been a taxi favourite
over the years. Toyota has
addressed that need, the entrylevel
model will fill that role well,
but what it has also done well is
making the Camry desirable for
those who don’t want to plunge
into the SUV market. There are
plenty of people like me who
like sedans, and Camry hybrid
will lure many who feel like they
are doing something for the
environment but want a bigger
hybrid than Prius.
At the same time, any Camry
buyer will know it has the benefit
of a hybrid system that has been
well proven and has Toyota’s
three-year/100,000km warranty.
has motoring covered!
