Miniatures honour fallen soldiers
REMEMBER: Jeff Cotton works on his
MILITARY modelling is not
the same as playing with toys.
In the world of miniature
plastic military modelling, it’s
about remembering and not in
any way about glorifying war,
says Avonside resident and
model-maker Reverend Jeff
Cotton.
“It tells a story. The story is remembrance
of people we never
knew,” he said.
Four of his large dioramas
will be on display at the World
Wars in Miniature memorabilia
show at St Nicholas Church on
Anzac Day.
His pieces are not exact
replicas – they are made in
memory of New Zealand’s war
veterans and are not designed to
be perfect.
“They serve to help keep these
soldiers’ memories alive as we
remember their sacrifices and
experiences that were made for
our freedom. “It’s not about
any kind of victory or battles,”
said Cotton, who is vicar of St
Nicholas Church Barrington
and chaplain at St George’s
Hospital.
Plan hatched to improve breeding
chances of NZ’s smallest bird
NEW ZEALAND’S
smallest bird is getting new
accommodation on Banks
Peninsula in a bid to improve its
chances of breeding successfully.
Titipounamu/rifleman are
rarely seen on the peninsula
because they prefer to take cover
in mature forest and mānuka/
kānuka scrub, but a plan has
been hatched to help boost their
numbers in the area.
Titipounamu (Acanthisitta
chloris) is native to New Zealand.
The males weigh just six grams
and females weigh seven grams.
They are one of only two species
left of the New Zealand wren
family.
The city council, Refuge Ecology
and the Banks Peninsula
Conservation Trust have been
installing predator-proof nesting
boxes for the birds in suitable
habitat.
The nest boxes provide a safe
nesting space in the absence of
mature trees.
Recent sightings of titipounamu
in Aylmers Valley, above
Akaroa, have led to the installation
of nest boxes there.
Observations of titipounamu
have also been recorded in
Robinsons Bay, Panama Reserve,
Hinewai and Le Bons Bay.
“We are seeking sightings
of titipounamu from local
residents and visitors to Banks
Peninsula so that we can better
understand their distribution,”
said city council ranger Hannah
Murdoch, who is leading the
project.
“If you have spotted titipounamu
please record the sighting
on iNaturalist or email alison.
evans@ccc.govt.nz with the
details of where you saw the bird
and when. If you can supply GPS
co-ordinates that will greatly
assist us.
“You are most likely to see
titipounamu flitting up and
down trees, feeding on insects
and spiders. They are distinctive
from other birds, due to their
small size and tiny tail.’’
The male has an olive green
colour on its back, while the
female is slightly different in
colour with yellow and dark
speckles on its back.
They are easily mistaken for
riroriro/grey warblers or tauhou/
silvereyes, although these birds
have longer tail feathers and different
colours than titipounamu.
The call of titipounamu is highpitched
and reaches a frequency
that is inaudible to some people.
Murdoch said the titipounamu
ACCOMMODATION:
population will be closely
monitored and the team plans
to work in collaboration with
Pest Free Banks Peninsula to
eliminate predators that might
threaten the tiny birds’ chances
of survival.
“Titipounamu are threatened
by predation from introduced
mammals like rats and stoats so
we’re hoping to get volunteers
involved in trapping efforts.
People wanting to help protect
native wildlife by trapping in
their own backyard can borrow
traps from either the Akaroa
Trap Library or the Little River
Trap Library,’’ she said.
ANZAC DAY
MONDAY APRIL 25, 2022
Remembering our Anzacs
“The darkness, calm and chill of the early morning; the sound of
the single tap of the drum of the parade; the emotionless faces
of the catafalque guard, and the mournful notes of Last Post
sounded by a lone bugler, combine to give a feeling of deep
solemnity. It is the intensity of the symbolism which contributes
to its powerful impact upon participants; indeed what underlies its
popularity. In a country with few public rituals, the Dawn Service
continues to provide a sense of occasion as a meaningful ritual of
remembrance.”
Every year Anzac Day is observed on April 25 by communities
throughout New Zealand and Australia to remember those who have
served and those who lost their lives in war. The term ANZAC is the
acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and was first
used in World War 1. These groups of soldiers back then were known
as ‘the Anzacs’.
Anzac commemorations may consist of one or more ceremonies –
one at dawn (timed to coincide with the initial landings at Gallipoli
by Australian troops who were the first ashore) and/or one later
in the morning. The ceremonies are rich in tradition and generally
begin with a parade of returned servicemen and military personnel
followed by cadets, youth groups and local dignitaries. War veterans,
proudly sporting their medals lead the parade, which leads to a local
cenotaph or memorial gate where the ceremony includes a service
with hymns, laying of wreaths, dedications, prayers and the Last Post
played on a bugle. Morning tea follows and allows people to share
memories and catch up with friends and neighbours.
Anzac Day was first observed by servicemen in 1916 to mark the
anniversary of New Zealand and Australian soldiers landing on the
Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. It soon became a day where all New
Zealanders and Australians took time to remember the men and
women who perished in the Great War. In 1921, Anzac Day became
an official holiday and by 1922 it was declared a full public holiday
where shops, banks and hotels remained closed for the day.
Symbol of remembrance
The red (or Flanders) poppy is a symbol of remembrance and hope
all over the world and, in some countries, is worn on Armistice
Day, however in New Zealand the red poppy is commonly worn
on Anzac Day. The first Poppy Day appeal was on April 24 in 1922,
where funds from the sales of small and large silk poppies helped
relieve suffering in war-ravaged northern France. A paper version
of the poppy is now sold by the Royal New Zealand Returned
Services Association on Poppy Day to raise awareness for Anzac
Day and funds for returned soldiers and their families and local
communities.
‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.’
ON DISPLAY: Jeff Cotton has created four large dioramas showing scenes from both World War 1 and 2 to scale for the World Wars in Miniature show.
PHOTOS: STAR MEDIA
Model-maker’s family connection to wars
• From page 1
Said Cotton: “We do remember
the lives of many people, some
of them very young, who went
overseas and gave their life in
circumstances that they really
didn’t have any idea about
what they were ever going to
get themselves into or out of,
especially in World War 1 and
later in World War 2.”
Cotton’s dioramas cover the
Battle of the Somme during
World War 1 and New Zealand’s
campaigns in the Solomon
Islands, North Africa and France
during World War 2.
The World War 1 battle he has
recreated depicts the Battle of
Bapaume in France, one of the
New Zealand Division’s final
offensives of the war from August
to September 1918.
It is especially poignant for
Cotton as it was where his
grandfather, William Cotton,
fought and was wounded.
It is also a site that he has
visited, describing the experience
as very moving.
His father, Jack Cotton, served
in both the Italian and Pacific
campaigns during World War 2,
finishing up in Japan at the war’s
end.
He said plastic modelling is a
perfect way for new a generation
of New Zealanders to remember
and understand their sacrifices.
“Plastic figures can go some of
the distance to explaining what
the world of the soldiers was like.
“You can begin picturing their
world and if the diorama is large
enough you can see what they
faced and some of the hurdles in
front of them.”
He said it is also about
remembering the people who
never returned on both sides.
“Many on both sides had no
idea what they were going into,
many didn’t come back, and for
those who did came home, they
carried with them the trauma
of what they experienced for the
rest of their lives.”
Cotton has been Anglican
minister for 17 years. He joined
the church after 21 years as a
hairdresser in Christchurch.
Cotton’s collection of
soldiers, vehicles and buildings
from both the European and
Pacific war campaigns has grown
over the years. He enjoys making
the models and painting the
displays.
He started collecting military
models after hearing conversations
between his father and
grandfather about the war when
he was young.
He took a break from the
hobby later in life to pursue
sports and then a career, but
rediscovered his passion for
military modelling about eight
years ago.
“It restarted when my wife, Jo,
suggested I get a hobby to help
reduce stress. Now it’s grown to a
point where I need more space at
my home in Avonside.”
He said he enjoys making the
models, putting the highly detailed
kit-sets together, painting
and photographing them, and
sharing his work online.
“When I display them on
Anzac Day it’s for a very different
story.
“What I’m trying to get across
to the generations of today is that
those wars are becoming more
distant as life goes on, but we
said we would never forget those
people – lest we forget.’’
Kiwi burger
Serves 4
Ingredients
400g minced beef at room temperature
4 Tbsp rapeseed (canola) or sunflower
oil
1 large red onion, finely sliced into discs
or semi-circles
4 thin slices of Emmental, Gouda
or Jarlsberg cheese
4 eggs
4 burger buns
4 Tbsp tomato sauce or tomato chutney
4 Tbsp Dijon or wholegrain mustard
12 large tomatoes, sliced
8-12 slices of pickled beetroot (see below)
4 large iceberg or round lettuce leaves
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
then gently squash the patties down with
a fish slice to the diameter of your burger
buns and cook for a further 10 minutes.
Flip the patties, season again, and place
a slice of cheese on top of each patty so
it gently hugs when melted. Cook for 1
minute for medium rare, or 2 minutes for
medium. Remove the patties and set aside
to rest while you cook the next batch.
For the fried eggs
Heat the remaining oil or butter in a
non-stick frying pan over a medium-high
heat. Crack in the eggs and as soon as you
hear them start to sizzle cover with a lid.
Fry for 30 seconds, then turn off the heat
and leave covered for a further 30 seconds.
Depending on how runny you like your
egg, you can cook them for longer.
When the patties are cooked, gently toast
the burger buns in the same pan, pressing
the sliced sides into the pan for 20-30
seconds.
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
Divide the meat into 4 equal amounts
and roll each into a ball. Sandwich each
ball between 2 pieces of baking paper,
and using a rolling pin, roll them out into
patties about 1cm smaller in diameter than
your burger buns. Set aside.
Heat 3 tablespoons of the oil in a large
frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add
the onions and fry for 5-6 minutes, until
soft and a little charred. Remove from the
pan and set aside.
Keeping a medium-high heat, add the
patties, two at a time. Generously season
with salt and pepper. Cook for 30 seconds,
To stack your burgers
Spread tomato sauce on the bottom
buns and mustard on the tops. Place each
cheese-coated patty on a bottom bun, then
top with the fried egg, 1-3 slices of tomato,
2-3 slices of pickled beetroot, lettuce and
lastly some of the fried onions, before
finishing with the bun tops.
Note: Some of us say it’s not a Kiwi
burger without a pineapple ring. For this
sweeter version, char some pineapple slices
in a griddle pan or under the grill and add
to the stack in place of the tomato.
Pickled beetroot
Makes a 750ml jar
Ingredients
450g-500g beetroot, peeled, thinly
sliced/diced (blanched in boiling water)
or grated
450ml (scant 2 cups) white wine vinegar
100ml (1/3 cup) filtered water
50g (1/5 cup) white sugar
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp black peppercorns
2 bay leaves
8 cloves, gently toasted
3 green cardamom pods, gently smashed
2-3 pared strips of lemon zest
Directions
Combine vinegar, water, sugar, salt and
spices in a large, non-reactive pan, keeping
any fresh herbs or lemon zest to one side
until the jarring stage. Place over a medium
heat, stirring until the sugar and salt
dissolve and the spices infuse. Bring to the
boil and simmer for 5 minutes, then allow
the brine to cool slightly.
Pack your prepped beetroots into
appropriately sized, clean, cool jars. Try
to fit in as much as possible without
squashing or forcing too tightly, leaving a
gap of about 1cm from the top rim.
Pour the brine over the beetroot.
Gently tap out any trapped bubbles, or
use a chopstick to manoeuvre the bubbles
out, making sure you get out as many as
you can (this trapped air can encourage
fermentation). Top up with brine again
so the produce is entirely covered, up to
23mm from the very top, and seal with a
sterilised dry lid.
The preserved beetroot will need to
be stored unopened in a cool, dark place
for about 34 weeks before opening. Once
opened, store in the fridge for greater
longevity.

HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when it
comes to choosing the perfect heat pump or
air conditioning system for their home or
office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home
both in Winter and Summer. This can be
achieved by using ducted systems or multi
systems and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community
Services Card, a SuperGold combo card or
who live in a low-income area as determined
by deciles 8-10 on the New Zealand
Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
it’s time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Reduce condensation and
dampness in your home
Damp air in houses condensates on cold
surfaces, such as single glazed windows
or wall linings. With double glazing and
insulation, this moisture will remain
suspended in the air or condensate on
the coolest surfaces available, such as in
cupboards. Window condensation results
in a “ponding” on windowsills, which
discolours paintwork, rots sills and creates
mould on curtains, walls and clothing.
Damp air and other contaminants can also
aggravate respiratory conditions including
asthma.
According to BRANZ (Building Research
Association of New Zealand) one in seven
New Zealand homes have damp wall linings
caused by surface condensation, and in 46%
of homes mildew occurs.
In a typical four-person household,
each family member will contribute
approximately 2.25 litres of moisture in the
air each day through showers, baths, boiling
kettles and cooking – adding up to well
over 60 litres per week.
The Dry-Matic from Smooth-Air, is a
cost effective, proven positive pressure
ventilation system for controlling
condensation and humid air. The Dry-
Matic works by drawing fresh air from
the attic space, diluting, displacing and
replacing humid and contaminated air with
drier, filtered air to reduce or eliminate
surface condensation and dampness.
Dry-Matic units are attic mounted and
can be fitted in both existing houses and
new buildings, operating effectively with
just one vent installed (for houses up to
275 sqm). Reasonably simple to install,
the units can provide relatively inexpensive
relief to thousands of homeowners who face
the depressing sight of windows streaming
with condensation on a daily basis.
In an age dominated by the importance
of minimising the carbon footprint of
buildings and their impact on the wider
environment, it is easy to forget that the
indoor environment is just as important to
occupants. The Dry-Matic both improves
the indoor environment, as well as saving
energy. By using filtered attic air, the
Dry-Matic uses solar heated air during the
day, and reduces the amount introduced at
night. The incoming drier air is easier to
heat, as it is not laden with moisture.
Whilst there are a number of competitors
that offer various solutions, Dry-Matic
systems offer all the benefits at very
competitive pricing.
Smooth-Air provide a wide range of
ventilation products to equip the building
industry with solutions to tackle the
debilitating problem of moist air that
should not persist in the 21st century.
Call Smooth-Air Products: 0800
The events of COVID-19 have shone
a light on protecting and maintaining
importance of social connectedness, family,
lifestyle, and community. With all of this
Your brain is like your body – it gets
stronger when you exercise it. There is a
skills keeps your brain young and fit. In one
study, 256 people with mild to moderate
anxiety took part in community education,
the courses covered a wide variety of topics,
from yoga to creative writing. The study
found that after completing the courses,
most participants reported feeling less
isolated during their courses. They also
experienced better wellbeing and less severe
symptoms, and this improvement lasted for
12 months.
By doing a Risingholme course, you can
find a new hobby, make new friends, and
upskill your life by taking on an enjoyable
challenge. At Risingholme we offer fun
short courses in so many areas that can not
More housing choice
is the way forward
Population growth, housing issues – including affordability – and climate change
are prompting a re-think of some of Ōtautahi-Christchurch’s planning rules.
Our proposed plan change
We need to build a wider variety of homes, and more of them, to suit
our changing housing needs.
For lower emissions – and future generations – we must build upwards,
particularly in and around our commercial centres within easy reach of
work, school and the shops.
Where we’ll grow
The proposed Draft Housing and Business Choice Plan Change
creates a number of residential and commercial zones in the city
and enables more and higher housing to be developed. Developments
may still be subject to a resource consent.
Check out our interactive maps* to find out what the proposed changes
mean for you and your property. Visit ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay
(Draft Housing and Business Choice Plan Change).
Growing in the right places
While we must follow the Government’s direction, we’re proposing that
some areas have qualities, known as Qualifying Matters. This means the
rules enabling increased development would not apply, or would be
limited, and development remains subject to resource consent approval.
This could be because of their significant heritage or character value, or
because of specific hazards like rockfall, erosion, tsunami or flooding.
Coastal hazards – preparing for change
We’re already feeling the impacts of climate change. We need to
plan now for the effects of coastal hazards on our communities,
infrastructure and environment, so that we are ready for what we
will be facing in the future.
We’re proposing changes, via our Draft Coastal Hazards Plan Change,
to avoid increased risk of harm to people and property from coastal
hazards such as flooding, tsunami, and erosion.
Belfast
The Government wants us to grow up!
We’ve been given direction by the Government to enable more housing.
This means in most urban residential zones of the city people will
be allowed to build up to three houses per section, and up to
12 metres high (three storeys, depending on building design) without
a resource consent.
Even greater building development – both residential and commercial
– would be allowed within and around the central city and suburban
commercial centres.
