Jill and Brian Koch
President 2020-2022
Brian has been a member of the Beth Torah Adath Yeshurun family since birth,
where his father Charlie served for many years on the Board of Directors. Brian will
attest that the best thing he ever did for Beth Torah was marrying Jill and bringing
her into the Beth Torah family. They married at the temple with Rabbi Farber
officiating in 2005. Since that time, they have parented three amazing daughters, Brooke (14), Tara (9), and
Hailey (7). Each of their girls has grown up at Beth Torah, participating in the Bright Beginnings program,
ECA and Religious School. Their daughter Brooke just spent her first year as a counselor for Camp Simcha.
Jill is completing a remarkable term as President, one that she started in the early days of the
COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, Jill oversaw efforts to ensure meaningful High Holy Day experiences,
the solidification of our senior rabbinical leadership for the next decade, the painting of the campus and the
entire construction process leading to the recent opening of the wholly renovated sanctuary. There have been
countless virtual meetings and events during the last two years. Prior to serving as President, Jill served as
Secretary, Financial Vice President, House Vice President, At-Large Vice President and Executive Vice
President. Jill was also active with the PTO, helping with Challah programs, bake sales and book sales.
Brian initially joined the Beth Torah Board of Directors in 2004, a year after graduating law school. He
later served for seven years on the Executive Board, in various roles including Youth and Camp Vice
President and At-Large Vice President, and has continued to serve on the By-Laws and Legal committees.
He previously received Beth Torah’s Young Leadership Award in 2009. Over the years, Jill and Brian have co
-chaired many events, such as Monte Carlo Night and Chanukkah Under the Stars. At one point, Jill and
Brian served jointly on the Board – laughing that their “date night” was a temple board meeting. In short, Jill
and Brian have dedicated tremendous time to our Beth Torah family and shown a strong commitment to
Judaism.
Outside of Beth Torah, Jill currently serves as the General Manager for Vesta Property Services, and
previously created and grew her own company, JK Property Management, into one of the best property
management companies in South Florida. Jill has been recognized as a Women of Distinction and listed in
Marquis’ Who’s Who among women business executives.
Brian is a Partner with Holland & Knight in the firm’s litigation department in Ft. Lauderdale. Brian has
been recognized in the Best Lawyers in America guide, as a Florida SuperLawyer, and as Florida Legal Elite
in the Florida Trend magazine, among others. Brian is the former President of the Broward Chapter of the
Federal Bar Association, which was named National Chapter of the Year under his watch. Brian chaired the
Broward Bar’s Professionalism Committee for five years. He has served on boards for various organizations,
including the Leadership Broward Foundation, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the B’nai B’rith
Justice Unit, Inns of Court and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society South Florida Chapter. In 2015, he was
recognized as the LLS Man of the Year for Ft. Lauderdale.
Jill and Brian are most proud of the family they have raised here at Beth Torah, and look forward to
many more celebrations to come. They represent the very best of Beth Torah.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR RABBIS
There is a prayer offered on Shabbat morning for those “Who Serve the Community.” What does
“community” refer to here? Listed in those we are “praying” for (another way of saying we are thanking
them) is the following:
1) Those who unite to establish [and maintain] synagogues
2) Those who devote themselves with the needs of this community
3) Those who devote themselves with the needs of Israel
The reason these are the “top 3” listed in this prayer is that the Rabbis saw a connection between them.
The synagogue is the center of the local Jewish community. Education, life cycle occasions including
celebrations and moments of sadness and mourning, holidays and Shabbat are the focus of the
synagogue. It helps mold the values and identities of the “local” Jews. The goal is for those people then
to reach out to the community at large and make sure that no Jew is “left behind” and that our Jewish
communal educational institutions are strong, to make sure that newcomers to the community (whether
from other American cities or from far flung communities around the world) find their Jewish home in their
new community. Then all these committed Jews unite to lend political, financial and moral support to the
Jewish State and homeland. Each is listed separately because each has its own distinct values and is, in
truth, very demanding. People have different interests so they tend to focus on a particular area and
because our community is made up of “people” we know that their interests and involvements will be
different – because people are people and we are not alike. The more varied the community, the
stronger it is and the more interesting it is. We would suggest that Beth Torah’s strength is its “variety”
and multi-cultural nature.
Our honorees for this year – our President, Jill Koch, with her “sidekick” husband, Brian, and Bonnie
Reiter-Lehrer – fit the description of those who cover all the “bases”: Synagogue, Community, Israel.
Their commitment to Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, our community and Israel is strong and enduring.
Under Jill’s enthusiastic and always positive leadership, we emerged from the COVID-19 lockdowns and
restrictions as strong as ever as she guided us from Livestream to ZOOM to “live” and Livestream so we
could maximize participation and keep everyone involved. Her smile and enthusiasm and genuine love of
the shul and its families are “contagious.” If you have ever participated in a Federation trip or event you
will benefit from the seamless and superb organization that happened behind the scenes. Bonnie
Reiter-Lehrer is that talented and incomparable behind the scenes person who makes it all come
together. People from around the country always comment on how great our Federation events are.
“What’s the Secret?” they ask. There are many we say – but one of them is surely Bonnie Reiter-Lehrer,
who makes us all “look good.” Her devotion to our Miami-Dade Jewish community is legendary. Kol
Hakavod to our honorees who understand that which we say every time we finish a book of the Torah:
Chazak Chazak v’Nitchazayk – Strong, Strong and we will all be strengthened.
Mario Rojzman, Senior Rabbi
Ed Farber, Rabbi Emeritus
MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
Dedication is defined as “the willingness to give significant time and energy to something because
it is important.” Our honorees this year – Jill and Brian Koch and Bonnie Reiter-Lehrer – have proven
time and time again that their dedication to causes that are important to them is unparalleled. Luckily for
us, Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus and the South Florida Jewish community are causes that fill each of
their hearts.
Jill and Brian Koch are truly valued members of BTBRC. They celebrated their bar and bat
mitzvahs at our synagogue, were married at our synagogue and have had three baby namings for their
daughters and one Bat Mitzvah (so far) at Beth Torah. Both have served on our Board of Directors for
many years (more than a decade each). They have held numerous positions on our Executive
Committee, including several vice president positions, and have chaired and been part of countless
committees.
When Jill became President of Beth Torah in June 2020, she had no idea that her entire term
would be during a time when the world was dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. She had to lead our
leaders and professionals in thinking differently while we determined how to effectively have worship
events, fundraisers, social events, and ECA classes in a virtual manner, while still keeping the family
atmosphere that Beth Torah is known for. As a result, Jill certainly had the most unique Beth Torah
presidency ever and some may say the most challenging. There is no doubt that Jill rose to the
challenge, and we are so proud of her efforts and involvement in Beth Torah. Jill’s life has been full of
board meetings, committee meetings, meetings with professionals and lay leaders – virtually daily
meetings, but on top of that, she has brought fun, high energy, dedication and hard work to Beth Torah.
Of course, Jill couldn’t do any of this without the love and support of her amazing husband, Brian, and
her daughters, Brooke, Tara, and Hailey. As Jill’s Executive Vice President (and very close friend), I can
truly say that it has been a pleasure serving under her and know that the Kochs will continue to keep
Beth Torah as their second home for many years to come. I have very big shoes to fill as the next
President of Beth Torah.
We are also grateful for Brian’s dedication to Beth Torah, where he has been a member his entire
life. Brian’s involvement in our synagogue has ranged from reading Haftorah to serving as Youth and
Camp Vice President. He took some years off of the Board of Directors to give Jill the limelight (or to
watch their kids while Jill was at countless meetings) but now is stepping back on the Board to serve as
Parliamentarian. Brian has been a great friend of mine for nearly thirty years, and I’m proud to work with
and learn from him.
Bonnie has shown incredible dedication to our South Florida Jewish community, and we are
proud to honor her this year. Bonnie has served the Jewish community for most of her nearly 40 year
career in communications, advertising and marketing. Her life’s work has been dedicated to building and
serving the Jewish community and Israel, and ensuring a strong and vibrant Jewish future for all of us.
We are grateful that Beth Torah is a part of the community that Bonnie has worked so hard to serve.
Tonight, we say thank you to Jill, Brian and Bonnie for tirelessly serving Beth Torah and our
community with such passion and dedication!
A MESSAGE FROM OUR
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
“If you are going to live, leave a legacy.
Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.”
– Maya Angelou
With immense pride and admiration, we celebrate three individuals who have contributed in countless
ways to the success of Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus and the broader Jewish community. Their
example for how to live a meaningful Jewish life is truly a legacy.
Jill and Brian Koch are shining examples of how synagogues need people and people need
synagogues. Brian, who grew up at Adath Yeshurun prior to its merger with Beth Torah, already knew he
was part of a special synagogue community when he married Jill and brought her into the extended
family. Together, they have held numerous leadership roles, supporting key function areas that keep
Beth Torah strong and thriving.
This year, Jill completes what may be considered the most unique term as Beth Torah’s
president, as the majority of her term was served at a distance from other members of the synagogue
during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet she continued to seek out ways to keep people connected and
energetic, knowing that her Beth Torah family may have been “socially distant,” but our hearts were
never more closely intertwined. And, of course, as part of her legacy, Jill was instrumental as part of the
team who led the renovation of the Scheck Family Sanctuary, a modern space for prayer and gathering
that continues to be a hallmark for Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus.
Truly worthy of our Distinguished Service Award, Bonnie Reitner-Lehrer, who serves as the Chief
Marketing Officer for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, has impacted countless synagogues and
Jewish agencies in Miami-Dade County as well as partner communities in Israel. She helps tell the
stories that often go untold. She helps build bridges that unite us all. She helps make connections that
lead to a stronger, more resilient Jewish community.
Jill, Brian and Bonnie have blessed our community with living legacies, for they continue to serve
with distinction to elevate the incredible activities that take place at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus and
around the community. Their mark cannot be erased, and we could not be more grateful.
Chazak; Chazak; v’Nitchazayk
Strong, Strong and We Will All Be Strengthened
A MESSAGE FROM OUR
DIRECTOR OF ENGAGEMENT
Faith does not mean certainty,
It means the courage to live with uncertainty.
It does not mean having the answers,
It means having the courage to ask the questions
And not let go of God, as he does not let go of us.
-Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
Years before she became President, at the time when Jill became Executive Vice President and set
herself on the path to leading our community, there was no way for her to know that her Presidential term
would run a parallel course with a global pandemic. Even if she had known, I imagine she would have
continued steadfastly toward assuming her role as President, because that’s the kind of leader Jill is. At
a time of great uncertainty and fear, Jill had the courage and faith to lead our diverse Beth Torah Benny
Rok Campus congregation. Of the many strengths Jill has displayed in these last two years, one that
certainly deserves recognition and commendation is her ability to adapt. As a result of this strength, Beth
Torah, too, found strength in adapting. With rising and falling positivity rates, evolving format options for
ritual services, educational needs that transitioned with time, community program approaches that
required decision-making and much, much more, Jill intuitively understood that hers would be a time of
consistent reflection and responsive transitions. In looking back, we see clearly that Jill never stopped
asking questions and listening to the answers, and we have benefited tremendously as a result.
Bonnie’s role in how Beth Torah established itself during the pandemic is one that cannot be
overstated. After all, it is one thing to make “next step” decisions such as the ones Jill was called upon to
make, and it is an entirely different effort to communicate those decisions. With her unique expertise in
the fields of marketing and communications, Bonnie advised us on how to effectively reach our diverse
membership during a time when the consistent delivery of compassionate care was critical. Bonnie’s
guidance set us on a path of sustainable transparency. Furthermore, she helped us in delicately
balancing being a socially distanced community that somehow remained personally present and
approachable every step of the way.
In honoring Jill and Bonnie this evening, we honor two courageous leaders who helped to carry
and inspire us during one of the most challenging times in Beth Torah’s long-standing history. For that
and so much more, “thank you” is just the beginning…
A MESSAGE FROM OUR
DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS & MEMBERSHIP
Mazal Tov Jill & Brian Koch and Bonnie Reiter-Lehrer!
This tribute is a tremendous milestone and a huge accomplishment for you, your families and your
extended group of supporters. Years of leadership, dedication, perseverance and sacrifice have brought
you to this moment and you should be incredibly proud of yourselves and feel confident that your
contribution has been and continues to be valuable, vital and an inspiration to many.
Once again, I struggled to find something to say amid a crisis that would add a Jewish thought. My own
words are never as eloquent as others and found these quotes that resonated with me:
"Torah is not education, it's transformation."
These past two years have certainly not been normal ones. But then again, as science journalist Ed
Yong elegantly put it, “Normal led to this.”
As Director of Admissions and Membership, I speak to you from my heart, and I know my sentiments
reflect those of our entire Beth Torah clergy, staff and faculty.
We grow and learn more from adversities and setbacks than we do from good times. For me, not only
COVID-19 has taught or reminded us how truly vital human contact is, especially in the midst of a Time
Like This (of a crisis). Normally, when we hit trying times, we’re able to rely on our broad safety net
consisting of friends, peers, families and colleagues for physical warmth, direct emotional connections
and intellectual and spiritual camaraderie. Today, once again we return to the new normal, postquarantine,
after almost two years of finding ourselves separated physically from our larger support
group and loved ones. While it was extremely difficult and immensely isolating, the upside of this
experience is that it provided us with the time and space to self-reflect on those in our lives who make us
better people by constantly and consistently challenging us, supporting us and being there for us. If we
can remember this important lesson and make it a priority going forward by fully supporting,
strengthening and appreciating these relationships, then we’ve truly gained.
This experience has also taught us that we’re connected not only to those in our inner circle, but to each
and every soul of the Beth Torah community.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR
DIRECTOR OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
“The Event” is a celebration of the leaders who have been cultivated generation after generation; it is a
testament to the strength, dedication and commitment to pushing our Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus
community to great heights.
I would like to offer a heartfelt congratulations to this year’s honorees – Jill and Brian Koch and Bonnie
Reiter-Lehrer – on behalf of myself and my team at the Suzy Fischer Early Childhood Academy.
Selflessness is defined as acting without thought on how we will profit or be rewarded, and our honorees
certainly embody that definition to its fullest. Their devoted leadership not only energizes me personally,
but their actions and deeds inspire our children and families as they lead by example.
On this momentous occasion, it is my honor – bittersweet as it is – to particularly wish our outgoing
President, Jill Koch, the best of luck and a heartfelt Thank You for a job well done! Jill, it is said that the
truest form of leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality and you’ve done just that. From the
moment I met you, you’ve been a tireless advocate for our BTBRC community and our incredible Early
Childhood program, and my biggest cheerleader. While being a leader can be fraught with challenges
under normal circumstances, you were tested in the face of a once-every-hundred years pandemic, yet
you led with poise, conviction and unwavering support. We are now thriving more than ever and continue
to grow strong. You are indeed a tornado, swirling with energy!
Mazal Tov to all the honorees on this well-deserved honor.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR
DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING
According to Rabbi Sacks, the term “Jewish leadership” is ambiguous. It means leadership by Jews, but
it also means leadership in a Jewish way. While the first term is common, the second is rare, as in a way
we are saying thank you for the past and giving blessings for the future. Rabbis Sacks taught us about
seven principles of Jewish leadership done in Jewish Ways:
Leadership begins with taking responsibility. Jill and the entire Koch Family have
demonstrated taking full responsibility in their leadership during unprecedented pandemic times.
No one can lead alone. Good leaders like you understand that they need to nurture
themselves and others and so you did.
Leadership is about the future. You took care of the present and the future.
Leaders learn. You have demonstrated your willingness to learn and be open minded.
Leadership means believing in the people you lead. We testify that you believe in us and in
our community.
Leadership involves a sense of timing and pace. You have shown it through your proactive
actions and vision.
Leadership is stressful and emotionally demanding. Despite the challenges, you carried your
leadership with emotional integrity and patience.
Jill and the Koch Family have embraced the presidency of our community with great dignity. You
have fulfilled Rabbi Sacks’ teachings in Jewish leadership accomplished in Jewish ways. Thank you for
your dedication, hard work and achievements during the last two years.
On a personal and professional level, and on behalf of the entire team, we thank you for guiding
us during your term. Kol Ha Kavod! Mazal tov!

if it is the home of great leaders.”
Beth Torah’s place of renown in the
Jewish community is a direct result of the
greatness of the lay leadership this Synagogue
has been blessed with.
Jill Koch’s leadership during this time of pandemic
has been nothing short of heroic and dynamic.
We went from the crisis of “AT A TIME LIKE THIS” to
“STRONGER TOGETHER” and were blessed with
Jill as our president and her “first man” - Brian -
who stood by her side the entire way.
