2 Farm & Food Directory Central Kootenay www.centralkootenayfood.ca 2022

This Directory

is your guide to

locating food

grown, raised

and processed

in our region.

Whether you are

an area resident who

wishes to eat close to home, a

processor who wants to source more

local ingredients, a restaurateur who

wishes to feature the bounty of the

Central Kootenay on your menu, a

tourist who wants to sample local fare,

or a farmer who wants to know what

the market opportunities are, this

Directory is for you.

Among the nooks and crannies of

the Central Kootenay is a diversity

of farms, big and small, as well as

numerous processors. From cherries

to potatoes, from tofu to charcuterie

When you buy local food you are:

About the CKFPC

The mission of the Central Kootenay

Food Policy Council is to build a just, sustainable

and prosperous food system in

our region by identifying challenges and

opportunities and by advocating for effective

policy. The Council was formed

in 2016 with the vision of catalyzing the

work already underway on food systems

in the region by consistently linking people

and projects across the region. We

focus on education and policy in order

Welcome to the Central Kootenay

Farm & Food Directory!

and cannabis, our region benefits from

a host of dedicated, passionate and

creative entrepreneurs who contribute

the fruits of their labour to our tables.

Explore the offerings in the different

areas of the Central Kootenay or

narrow in on a few favourite products

and find out who has them and

where they are located. The Directory

also allows those so inclined to

seek out and support businesses

owned by Indigenous, Black, other

People of Colour, Queer and Youth

entrepreneurs. Each business entry

includes information on when and

where their products are available

and how to contact them. And if you

are not certain when things may be

ready, check out the Seasonal Guide

on page 26.

The map on the centre pages will

inspire you to explore the wide range of

• getting fresh, tasty, nutritious food;

• helping to keep family farms and processors in business;

• preserving our rural landscape;

• supporting ecological diversity; and

• helping to build a resilient food economy in our own region.

to support and to not be in competition

with the good work of our members.

Our Council members represent communities,

farms and food businesses,

non-profits, and local governments in the

Central Kootenay. This enables an ongoing

two-way flow of information that

guides our work and helps to determine

our priorities.

food offerings in the Central Kootenay.

For those who may be struggling

with food insecurity, we have a list of

emergency food services on page

27 that includes information on what

services they offer, their location and

when they are available.

An online version of the Directory is

found at centralkootenayfood.ca

where you can explore the list of farms,

products and food processors. Like the

print version, you will also find a listing

of farmers markets, food festivals, and

farm & food organizations based in

the region.

Why support the local

food economy?

Local farms preserve rural areas for future generations. Once

lost to development, agricultural land is generally lost forever,

not only as a source of food, but also as a source of beauty.

It is the beauty of the Kootenays that draws the artists,

the tourists and those who wish to live in a green

and healthy environment.

RELOCALIZE FOOD ACTION GRID

POLICY 101

The events of the past few years have taught us all the

wisdom of having the necessities of life close at hand. The

work of rebuilding our local food systems is complex and

demanding but there is a role for everyone. The image

below provides suggested actions that can be taken

to help relocalize our food systems, strengthen our food

for area residents. Explore the table below to identify some

actions that you could take to be part of the solution. For

What can ranchers and farmers do to help

prevent the spread of invasive species?

Invasive species are a major concern

when it comes to food security. In BC,

crop loss from invasive plants and pests

are estimated at over $50 million annually.

Species such as invasive knapweed

out-compete desired species; reduce

forage quality and lower crop values.

Prevention, early detection and control

are the best tools when it comes to invasive

species management.

• Learn to identify the invasive species in

your area.

• Report any priority sightings. The earlier

invasive species are detected, the easier

and more economical it is to control

them. Assistance may be available for

managing top priority plants.

• Work Clean Go! Clean your boots, gear,

truck bed, tires and harvesting equipment

before moving to the next site.

• Avoid mowing or driving though patches

of invasive plants that are in seed.

• Be sure to control invasive plants adjacent

to fields.

• Ensure your seed sources are free of

noxious weed contamination

• Use weed-free hay - Find out where

your hay and straw come from and

avoid contaminated sources.

your area:

Pictured here, left to right are rush skeltonweed, which reduces crop quality and yield, blueweed, a plant that can be toxic to horses and cattle when

ingested, and wild parsnip, a toxic plant that can cause severe painful blisters in humans and livestock. Educate yourself about the invasive species in

your area and help keep them under control.

Everything

has a Season....

Did you know that the Central Koo-

tenay has 2 fully licensed abattoirs

that, between them, serve all species

of animals raised here? Sourc-

ing meat from locally raised and

processed animals is a great way to

ensure that they are humanely raised

and slaughtered. And just like most

other foods we eat, fresh meat is

seasonal as well. In the Central Koo-

tenay we can access fresh beef and

pork almost year-round, though the

most common season for both is the

fall through mid winter.

Lamb and chickens are available

from early summer through late fall,

and turkey is generally raised to

be ready for the Thanksgiving and

Christmas feasts. Well-packaged

frozen meat is high quality and

available year-round.

If you feel that you have information that should

appear on these pages, please email us at

farm_n_food@pennywiseads.com

and we’ll gather your info for next year.

We hear the phrase all the time... but what is food security?

Food security is commonly associated with

hunger and the inability of an individual or

family to access enough food for their needs.

More broadly, food security is about the degree

of control we have in the present and in

the long term over the food we need to feed

ourselves, our families and our communities.

The measure of our or any community’s compassion

and health can be found in how well

we care for our disadvantaged members.

The Central Kootenay is fortunate to have many

generous, dedicated and creative service providers

who ensure food is available for those

who need it in our communities. Check out the

listing of Emergency Food Services so you know

where to go should you have need, and you

know who would benefit from food and money

donations if you have excess.

The Farm & Food Directory is one of several projects helping

to make our food systems more resilient and strengthen the

regional food economy.
