RUSSIA IS OVERRATED IN
BALLET AND NOW IT’S
CANCELLED WORLD
When ballet is discussed
typically people think of
Russia. Historically the
concept of ballet dance
began in around 1500 in
Italy. When Katherine of the
Medici family married King
Henry II she brought the
ballet from Italy to France.
The early ballet costumes
were elaborate with layers
of fabric and included
masks and headdresses and
ornaments. By the mid-
1600s a dance academy
had been opened in
Paris and the nobility was
completely immersed in
ballet to the extent that
King Louis XIV also
participated. A painting
of him in his full consume
including the headdress
provides a look at what
those early ballet costumes

about in the mid-1800s
now referred to as the tutu.
Ballet was introduced in
Russia in the early 1800s. It
became popular with the
Zars. At the beginning of the

A group called the Ballet Russes was
composed not only of dancers, but,
choreographers, composers, and
singers This group toured throughout
Europe and the United States During this
time George Ballentine was an artist who
established ballet in America. Through
his efforts, the New York City Ballet was
founded.
During this time Russia was in the midst
of another revolution and the attention
of ballet was diverted to survival mode.
With the advent of Stalin and following
repressive tyrants into the present history
of Russia. The art of ballet which has
been nurtured through hard times and
various inhibitory regimes survived as an
art but continually lost some of the most
successful performers to defections to
Canada and the United States. Two of
the most renowned of ballet performers
in Russia, Mikhail Baryshnikov who
defected to Canada, and Rudolf
Nureyev who defected to France found
the restrictions of imperialistic Russia
to not be compatible with the creative
freedom needed to perfect an art. The
attached photos show each of these
artists performing their art.
Ballet in the United States became
more popular throughout the cold war
with Russia. The artist Paul Cadmus
who is recognized as one of America’s
foremost figure artists spent much time
in his early career backstage in ballet
theaters where he found models for his
drawings.
True to its history Russia has again
selected a tyrant to lead their country

and as a result, all ballet performances
of Russian ballet troupes have been
canceled throughout the free world.
Also, the world-famous Ukrainian Kyiv
Ballet has canceled performances
internationally while they assist their
country in attempting to survive the
Russian invasion and hopefully their
culture.

APR 30 Birds of Joshua Tree National
Park Spring 2022
The deceptively barren Mojave Desert
landscape is home and resting grounds
for numerous endemic and migratory
bird species. Joshua trees do not
make a typical forest, the landscape is
open, the climate dry and vegetation
relatively sparse. Despite this, over 240
species of birds have been recorded
in Joshua Tree National Park! Kurt
Leuschner, Professor of College of the
Desert, Palm Desert, will guide this twoday
field class through the Mojave and
Colorado Deserts to identify common
and rare birds. Leuschner’s focus will
be on identifying individual species
and separating summer and winter
residents from true migrants. He will
discuss nesting and feeding habits,
interactions with plant life, and adaptive
strategies. Participants will have the
thrill of identifying the park’s common
spring bird species, better understand
the role each plays in the high desert
ecosystem, and have the chance of
sighting rare species like the Pinyon Jay,
Prairie Falcon, or Lawrence’s Goldfinch.

Our Mission: Living life after cancer is
tough. Shay’s Warriors will inspire, inform,
empower and help heal women and
their families through health, fitness
and the mind-body connection. Shay’s
Warriors is a 501© (3), 100% volunteerrun
non-profit formed in the Coachella
Valley in November 2018, to help
women who have gone through breast
and other reproductive cancers.
About Shays Warriors: About Shay’s
Warriors: Founder Shay Moraga was
diagnosed with triple negative breast
cancer in 2016. Shay fought for her
life until the day she was told that her
cancer was gone! “Toodle-oo, cancer!
Those who have experienced hearing
those words know that cancer never
truly leaves you. Physically yes, however
emotionally, never! Everyone’s bodies
act differently. There’s often guilt, fear,
loneliness and an overwhelming sense of
“what did I just go through?” It’s normal
to have confusion once you receive
a clean bill of health. Women Struggle
to ask for help. After Shay’s very quiet
struggling search for local resources,
she had a passion to do more. This is
when Shay’s Warriors was brought to life
with the hope of providing a healthy,
inspiring and safe space for survivors to
connect and thrive.
Our Community: Our online community
is filled with inspiring messages on
social media; there are fun, relaxing
and motivational playlists on Spotify.
Educational and emotional podcasts,
blog posts and live YouTube virtual
talks are all available. Our board plans
special events including our yearly
reset retreat and ongoing workshops.
Our shop “guilt free” swag inspires us
with hats, shirts, yoga mats, and more,
because 100% profit goes back to the
mission We provide personal support
including personal responses from our
founder and other thrivers to all inquiries.
Shay’s Warriors runs on female power
and a few good men generated by
women all whom have been affected
by cancer in one way or another.

go directly back to Shay’s Warriors’
mission in supporting our life after cancer
survivorship, retreat and programs.
Upcoming Event: The I Am Hope
Survivors Reset Retreat is a three-day,
two-night experience for women hosted
in the beautiful Coachella Valley. This
year’s retreat focuses on breast and
other reproductive cancer survivors. We
aim to help survivors get clear on life
after cancer and how to move forward.
The retreat will be held June 24-26th,
2022.

I Am Hope Retreat Terms and Conditions
Nominees must be between 1-5 years
from active treatment or metastatic with
doctor’s written approval. Attendees
must be willing to sign a medical waiver
and provide proof of doctor’s approval
for physical activity, as we will be
engaging in some light movement and
breath work.
We ask that all attendees be willing
to sign a photography waiver, as well,
since photos taken during the event
will be used in future PR and marketing
materials — if you do not wish to appear
in any photography during the retreat,
please let us know. Travel costs to/from
the retreat are not included; attendees
must arrange and pay for their own
travel/transportation. We require a $100
deposit to hold an attendee’s place;
the full deposit will be refunded at the
end of the retreat. If you cancel before
the retreat start date, your deposit will
be forfeited.
All survivors are welcome to apply
and/or be nominated! We especially
encourage people of color and
survivors from underserved communities
who may not normally have access to
this kind of opportunity to be nominated
or apply. Due to limited space, some
additional restrictions may apply at the
discretion of the Board of Directors of
Shay’s Warriors.
