The Chief Executive
KHALED
EL-AHMAD
6
Good afternoon, Reds.
Welcome back to Oakwell for our second
game this week and our final home Sky Bet
Championship fixture of the campaign. I realise
that this season hasn’t gone how you – or any of
us at the club, for that matter – would have liked.
We all share your disappointment and frustration,
and now it is time to prepare for the challenges
presented to us by League One.
Away from the field, Barnsley Football Club and
Reds in the Community are holding another
collection for Barnsley Foodbank ahead of this
afternoon’s visit of Preston North End. As the cost
of living continues to rise, more and more of us
are feeling the pinch financially, and some are
considerably less fortunate than others.
In this day and age, no one should have to
choose between heating and eating, but the
sad reality is that many families are struggling to
cope with the rise of inflation. I understand that
times are tough for us all, but if you can spare
anything for those who are less privileged, that
act of generosity will go a long way to making
someone’s life a bit easier.
So far, nearly 550kg of food has been donated at
Oakwell, which is the equivalent of 1,306 meals
to people in need. This is a fantastic statistic and
a wonderful reflection of our fanbase, who pull
together in times of need.
As I mentioned in my notes against Blackpool
on Tuesday evening, our U18s are on the verge of
securing a place in the Professional Development
League play-offs. That could happen today,
depending on results elsewhere, or next weekend
when they host Millwall here on the main pitch.
I hope those of you who aren’t making the trip to
West Bromwich Albion for the first team fixture
will come and support the young lads, because
they have been phenomenal this season and
they deserve all the plaudits they receive.
Thank you for the reception that you gave Amine
Bassi, Claudio Gomes and Domingos Quina at
half-time in midweek. These three players gave
their all every time they put on the red shirt – as
does everyone in the changing room – and I
hope you can show your appreciation at full-time
today to all of the team.
Even though it has been a tough campaign, there
have been some good individual performances,
and these have been recognised in our end of
season awards, which will be presented during
the warm-up.
We also pay our respects to supporters who are
sadly no longer with us in our Reds Remembered
tribute. The names of our loved ones are in
this programme and will be read out ahead of
kick-off this afternoon before we hold a minute’s
reflection.
A warm welcome to Ryan Lowe, his squad and
all of the fans who have travelled here from
Lancashire for this early kick-off. We wish you a
safe journey back home, and hope that you –
and everyone in attendance – enjoys the game
today.
Finally, a huge thank you to you, our supporters,
who have been with us through it all this
campaign, following the Reds up and down
the country and watching here at Oakwell. We
appreciate your backing more than you know,
and I hope to see you all here again next season,
cheering on the lads!
Stay safe.
The Big Interview
LIAM
KITCHING
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

s we approach our final home game of
what has been a bitterly disappointing
campaign, we spoke with Liam Kitching –
not for the first time this season.
Our no-nonsense defender was originally the
cover star for the Boxing Day encounter with
Stoke City and then once more for the visit of
Blackpool back in January, both of which were
postponed due to Covid-19.
Things were tough for the Reds around the
festive period. After overcoming Derby County
at the start of November, a 13-game winless
run would follow where we picked up just three
points and succumbed to defeat by the odd goal
on six occasions.
That poor form summed up the campaign,
overall; a few nearly moments and what if’s that
continued to give everyone the briefest of hope
until our fate was mathematically sealed with
defeat at Huddersfield Town last Friday.
10
“I’m disappointed,” conceded Liam. “It’s just been
one of those seasons where nothing has really
gone right. We’ve never seemed to have any
momentum or consistency, and we never really
found our feet.
“It’s just very disappointing and we’ve let
down the fans, especially after the year before
and what the lads had – I know I came in the
January.
“I think everyone thought we’d do a lot better
than this, and it’s just disappointing for the fans
not to be in for the season where we played well,
and now we’ve played extremely poorly.”
Throughout his career so far, Kitch, as he is
known by everyone on Grove Street, has been
involved in teams who have been fighting for
promotion or, at the very least, consolidating in
mid-table.
To suffer relegation is a completely new feeling
for the 22-year-old, who admits this is one of
the lowest points that he has experienced whilst
playing football.
“I’ve never had a relegation,” he discussed. “Every
team I’ve played for has been up in the top half
of the table, so it’s a different feeling – it’s not a
nice feeling, and it hurts a lot more because the
group of lads that we’ve got is a cracking group
of lads, and it’s just a shame that we’ve not done
as well as we thought we would.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
“It’s been one of those seasons; it doesn’t help
when you’re changing managers. At the start
of the season, we didn’t have a real plan and
it doesn’t help when everything is changing
around the building.
“I know it shouldn’t affect your game, but I think
what you don’t realise is that it does – it affects
players, it affects training, it affects all sorts, and it’s
always different and hard to try to get used to it.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

11
“Then, before you know it, we’ve got a new
manager coming in and we couldn’t find our
feet.”
There was plenty of optimism around the camp
given how we started the campaign. Four points
from the opening two games against Cardiff
City and Coventry City represented a decent
return as we occupied ninth place in the Sky Bet
Championship.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
Throw the magnificent first half display at
Queens Park Rangers into the equation, too, and
you would be forgiven for believing that the Reds
might potentially enjoy a successful season.
But a run of seven straight defeats, which
culminated with the departure of Markus
Schopp at the end of October, saw Barnsley
languishing deep in trouble and was, ultimately,
something we would never recover from.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

12
“We started well at Cardiff with the draw and
then beat Coventry,” discussed Kitch. “I can
remember those two games because I thought
we’d do well this season.
“I don’t know really, we kind of just slipped off
it. You look at the first half against QPR and we
were unreal; we played really well going forward
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
and defending, and we were 2-0 up and got
complacent and it ended up 2-2.
“Even then, I thought we were performing
well and I thought QPR would be up there.
At the start of the season, we put in a great
performance against them.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

un, but we’ve never really had two or three wins
on the bounce.”
There have been games where the Reds haven’t
quite had the fortune they deserve. You look back
to the defeat at Ashton Gate and wonder how
on earth we’ve left with nothing to show for our
endeavours.
Fine margins often decide encounters, and it’s
safe to say that we haven’t had those when we
needed them most.
“There’s only so many times you can say you’ve
not had a lot of luck, and then 40 games down
the line you think it can’t be luck now because
surely that would change,” he discussed.
“I’ve thought that before; I thought our luck will
change, but it never did, so it can’t really be down
to that.”
Three victories in four games in February
threatened to spark a mini revival, with QPR, Hull
City and Middlesbrough all despatched as we
climbed off the foot of the table and closed the
gap to Reading above.
13
Performances were also positive as we picked up
points against Stoke and Fulham before beating
Bristol City, and there was genuine belief around
the camp that we could be in store for another
great escape.
“We did start to believe then, where we could
have picked up so many points,” said Liam. “It
was the Hull City game where we won and the
Middlesbrough game, and everyone believed
that we were really in it.
“We won against QPR before that, and everyone
thought we needed to take this momentum with
us. We got unlucky against Stoke – I say unlucky,
it was just a bit of bad defending – where we
should have won.
“But we’ve done that all season against good
teams, so I don’t know what it’s down to.
“We’ve not really had it the other way round
where we’ve had a couple of wins under our belt
and thought we can kick on.
“I thought at the start of the season we’d get that
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
“The Fulham game was just a bit of class from
Harry Wilson, which he’s always going to bring,
but it’s hard to say that we didn’t put up a really
good fight against them.
“Then we beat Bristol City but haven’t won since
then.”
We have often been undone by moments of
brilliance in recent weeks. Lewis Baker fired home
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

an unstoppable strike for Stoke, while Wilson did
the same for Fulham just a few days later in the
dying minutes.
Fast-forward to Good Friday where Olivier
Ntcham curled one into the top corner from
distance.
Six points. Gone.
There’s no saying for definite whether we’d still
be in the fight, but those goals were damaging
to momentum and morale, and each one was a
nail in the coffin as we inched closer to the trap
door.
14
“Sometimes you’re proud of your performance
when there’s a worldie going in – especially
against Fulham,” continued Kitch. “I’m sure we
were all proud of our performance and happy
with our performance, but at the same time it
was just a low blow because we defended so
well for 85 minutes or whatever, and then he
goes and sticks one in the top bins.
“I think if we’d won that game, it’d have given us
loads of confidence. They feel like a loss when
you’re defending so well – those draws feel like
losses.”
What was even more demoralising for the Reds
was the news at full-time that Reading had
continued to pick up points and were gradually
clawing their way clear of danger.
That was a particularly bitter pill to swallow at
Swansea City, where the lads left everything out
on the pitch but only had a draw to show for
their efforts, eventually learning that the Royals
had snatched all three points at, of all places,
Bramall Lane.
“You can only control how many points you pick
up in your game, so you’ve just got to get that
out of your mind and focus on your game, really,
and do what you can do,” reasoned Liam.
“If they don’t win, it’s in your favour.”
Away from the collective strife, Kitch has enjoyed
a productive campaign in terms of his overall
development.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
The versatile defender has made 30 Championship
appearances while featuring a couple of times in
the Emirates FA Cup, too, and he feels it will be
hugely beneficial heading into next season.
“I’ve got 30 games under my belt now, so on
a personal level it’s been good for me to get
experience in the Championship and, like I
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

15
say, I’m always learning and trying to improve
myself,” he insisted.
“As long as I’m on the pitch and learning my
trade, it’s good.
“I think it’ll massively benefit me. I think just
playing games as a young player is always the
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
aim and the more games you play, the more
experienced you are.
“This season has been a big learning curve for
me, playing against some really high quality
opponents and hopefully I can take that into
next season, use the experience that I’ve gained,
and put in some mature performances.”
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

ith just one game left of the 21/22
Professional Development League
campaign, our U18s are on the brink of
securing a place in the play-offs for the
very first time.
We sat down with Tom Harban, who has
overseen the development of our youngsters for
the vast majority of this season prior to stepping
up to his role in the first team, to get his thoughts
on their success.
What a season it has been for the under 18s.
Did you imagine this before a ball was kicked
at the start of the campaign?
Yeah. I thought, with the group that we’ve got,
that they had the potential to have a successful
season. We started off a bit slow in terms of
a couple of performances, like against QPR.
Swansea was an excellent performance, but we
didn’t get the result to match it.
After that, we’ve done well on the whole. There’s
been the odd one or two performances that have
probably cost us maybe winning the league but,
on a whole, I’m really pleased and I think the
expectation was there from the start – not just
in my head, but their heads as well that they
wanted to be successful.
18
So, hopefully they’ll go and finish it off now.
You mentioned the start of the season where
you shipped nine goals in the first two games,
but since then – barring the 5-5 draw at Crewe
– it’s been pretty solid.
I think a big reason for that is we’ve had a
young backline for the majority of the season.
You’ve got Danny Benson who’s a second year
and then the rest have been first years in that
defensive unit.
So, them coming into full-time football, you kind
of expect them to start a little bit more steady
compared to the second years because they’re
finding their feet in full-time football. So, over
time, they’ve become a bit more consistent
and understand the game a bit more, they
understand their roles within the team.
It’s been pleasing in that respect.
It is a young group; I don’t think I’ve seen such a
balance between first and second years. Does
that only bode well for next season in terms of
experience?
The first years that will be the second years next
season will only benefit from this season. You’ve
got lads now that are getting more and more
minutes like Josiah and Theo, who maybe didn’t
feature as much – Luis Lacey – that have stepped
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
in and have performed equally as well to the
levels that were in previous.
They’ve really took to the plate and staked their
claim for the shirt and managed to keep it. So,
hopefully they can carry on doing that now and
for the remainder of the season.
You just mentioned Josiah Dyer there, there’s a
lot of hype around him because of his name. Do
you think he feels that pressure, or does he go
out and play with freedom?
I think he just wants to be his own player and
he wants to learn. He listens, he tries to put into
practice what we’re asking him as coaches and
the one thing that he doesn’t lack is his work ethic.
So, in terms of that, I don’t think he plays with
added pressure; he just wants to be the best he
can for himself and the team. So, he’s done well
since he’s come in.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

19
There are a few players who’ve really excelled.
You look at Keegan Hartley and Harrison
Nejman, in particular – they’ve had quite a bit
of under 23s game time as well. How impressed
have you been with them?
I think they’ve been excellent. Throughout the
whole of the season, they’re playing a lot of
football at the minute – under 18s and under 23s –
and it’s demanding on them because they’ve got
to learn to look after their bodies, but performancewise,
on the whole, they’ve been excellent.
They’ve really set the example to the rest of the
group in terms of the day-to-day stuff and taking
it onto the pitch on Saturday.
Especially for Keegan, this has been a big
season because he missed virtually the entirety
of the previous campaign.
I’m really pleased for Keegan because, like you
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
said, he missed his full year last season. I think
he managed to get 20 minutes or half an hour of
the last game of the season, and those were the
only minutes he kicked a ball.
So, for him to get back to full fitness this year
is full credit to him because he worked so hard
in the gym and his rehab. As the season has
gone on, he’s just got stronger and stronger and
stronger, and that is showing in his performances
for the under 18s and under 23s, which is
pleasing.
Another player who came back from injury
partway through the season is Kieren Flavell.
What have you made of his development?
I think he’s been excellent. There was an
expectation that he’d come back and maybe be
a little sluggish, if you like, because he’s missed
a lot of football, but he’s stepped right back into
the team like he’s never been away.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

20
He brings a bit of calm to the backline to build
through, he’s exceptional with his feet but, again,
he’s another one who we don’t want to take his
foot off the gas and to keep striving and pushing
to be better.
From where he’s come from with his injury to
now, he’s done really well, so fair play to him.
How much potential has he got because he’s
trained with England youth camps?
He could be anything he wants to be, Kieren; he just
has to get in his head that it’s not going to be given
to him and that he has to work hard for everything
he’s going to get. Potentially, like I said, he could
do what he wants in the game and it’s ultimately
going to be down to him how far he goes.
There was another serious injury, this time to
Matty Doyle at Wigan Athletic. He recently had
his operation, how’s that gone?
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
He’s obviously disappointed because he was
another one – a young first year who played
a lot of football for us and improved a lot since
the start of the season to where he was against
Wigan.
So, it’s disappointing that his season had to end
as it has, but he’s a big character around the
group, so we’re trying to keep him involved as
much as he can, and hopefully he’ll get through
his rehab with no major issues, and we can get
him back on the pitch as soon as possible.
Some of the under 16s have gradually
integrated and one of them, in particular, has
really stood out this season – Fabio Jalo. Again,
how far can he go because he’s played for the
under 23s and scored, as well?
Fabio is an exciting prospect – he’s an attacking
player who wants to score loads of goals, so
we’re trying to teach him the game without
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

same mentality and same application to any
game of football he’s involved in and, us as staff,
will drum home this is how it needs to be – keep
grounded.
He’s not made it yet, but he’s doing very well, so
he just needs to keep doing what he’s doing at
the minute.
In terms of the under 16s coming through, you
took quite a few out to Italy with you, is it an
exciting group?
Yeah. I think, again, next year we’ll have a good,
solid group of players, which will complement
each other quite well. I think it’ll be a very attackminded
team next year, so that will be exciting to
see what develops from that.
But I’m just looking forward to getting them in a
full-time environment now and seeing how they
cope with the demands of it, day-to-day.
Like you say, we went to Italy for 10 days and
some of them found it a little bit of a slog,
physically, because of the training every day and
playing games in quite a short period of time. But
that’s where we need to get them to and, over
the course of pre-season, that’s what we’ll be
aiming to do.
What was the overall goal from the Italy trip?
Was it a case of team bonding and maintaining
that match sharpness?
21
taking away too much of his own game. He’s
got to find the balance now of playing for himself
and playing for the team.
His work ethic has been superb in the under 18s
and he’s deserved to play in the games with
what he’s done, goals-wise, in his own age group
and the under 18s.
But he’s another one who is young, so we need
to look after him and continue to work on his
development and understanding of the game,
and hopefully he’ll get stronger and, hopefully,
in the near future he’ll get opportunities moving
forward, but he has to keep his head down and
keep working.
How important is it that he stays grounded and
he’s not over-hyped, in that respect?
It’s massive. I think, wherever he’s playing or
whatever age group he’s in, he has to have the
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
Being away from home for a long period of time,
some of the lads hadn’t experienced that, so it
was a case of getting their heads round that.
I think there were one or two who suffered a
little bit from homesickness, but it’s part of the
professional game going away, so it’s good that
they’ve been exposed to it.
The main one was getting the group together
that’s mainly going to be the group for next year.
We took Harrison, Keegan, Danny and Kieren
with us, and they set the example throughout
the trip that this is what we need to be in this
environment, and hopefully the new boys have
learnt a lot from the trip and they hit the ground
running when they come back in.
How good was it for fitness because I imagine
the endurance has built up playing in those
sorts of temperatures?
It was tough. The first two games were in three
days, so to get players through them without
picking up niggles and injuries – and we were still
training – it was a tough experience for them.
A massive thing to take from it, for them, is the
recovery-side of it; the importance of sleeping,
resting, eating right and hydrating properly, I
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

think that’s been a massive learning curve for
them over the 10 days while we were out there.
So, hopefully, they’ve taken the messages on
board that we’ve tried to drill into them and they
implement them, and it’ll benefit them moving
forward.
How did they cope with the different styles of
football that they came up against?
They found it tough, I think mainly because of the
physicality of the under 19s boys that they were
playing – we were asking under 16s lads who are
still at school to go and compete against these
boys.
But there were different styles – all three teams
played in a different way, and we had to try and
cope and counteract that. So, for example, the
last game we had so much of the ball because
they let us have it, because they were a counterattacking
team, so that was completely new
to our lads, having so much time and space to
make good decisions.
22
Throughout the course of the game, they got
to grips with it and played some really good
football, so it was really beneficial in terms of
that – playing different styles – and, again,
really positive in terms of their learning and
development.
You lost all three games, were you ever worried
coming back that that might affect them
mentally heading into the Ipswich game, or
were there no concerns at all?
No. I think the way we wanted to go about
it and give everyone as much game time as
we could, that obviously meant changing
things around a lot. Whether it’s from the start
or whether it was in game, getting everyone
involved in the game was going to disrupt
performances.
So, the main thing was going and experiencing
being away from home, playing a different style.
Results weren’t really a thing we were looking at
while we were out there; we knew that when we
came back, we had a big game against Ipswich,
and that was the main goal – to come back fully
fit and ready to go into that game with a positive
mindset from the last league game against
Cardiff, and we did that.
What was that performance like against
Ipswich?
I thought, first half, we were excellent; we
dominated the game, played some really good
football and maybe should have been two or
three up at half-time.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
I think the second half, with it being such a long
period of time being away from home – the
Italy trip – we looked very leggy, and the lads
had to find a way to grind out a result, and
they were exceptional in terms of doing that.
Defending the box when they had to, getting
together and being in it together to make sure
they came away with the win.
So, it was full credit to them on the back of what’s
been a tough schedule, but now it’s all about
getting rested up. We haven’t got a game on
Saturday, so it’s getting rested up and getting
ready for Millwall.
The under 18s could potentially get play-offs
this weekend without kicking a ball. Would you
want to get play-offs that way, or would you
rather win against Millwall to seal it that way –
or does it not bother you?
It doesn’t fuss me. If we get it this week, then
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

23
great, without kicking a ball. If we have to go
and concentrate on our business and get a result
against Millwall, then that’s what we’ll have to
do.
Either way, it doesn’t matter. The most important
thing is that we do everything we can to try and
get there, and I’m sure the lads will do everything
they can to do that.
The Millwall game is on the main pitch – you
obviously won’t be in the dugout, you’ll be at
West Brom, but are you hoping there’ll be a
few supporters coming down and watching?
I’d like to think so. The lads deserve a bit of
support from how they’ve performed all season;
they’ve been excellent and it’ll be good for the
fans who aren’t making the trip to West Brom to
come along and support the young boys and,
hopefully, get them over the line if needs be, in
terms of the play-offs.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
Over the course of the season, has there been
one game that has stood out where you’ve
thought that this team is going to go on and do
well?
I thought, if I’m honest, after the Hull City game
where we dropped points, in terms of the top
two, we might have been out of it. But, since that
game, and going to Sheffield Wednesday and
getting a really positive result, the lads have just
had a bounce about them and a spring in their
step.
They’re going about the place in a confident
manner, so I think that Sheffield Wednesday
game, at the minute, has been a big turning
point.
Obviously, we went to Charlton the following
week and beat them when they’re free-scoring
– they won their league quite early on. So,
hopefully, we’ve got one more big push to get
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

24
there if needs be if it’s not done at the weekend,
and I’m sure they’ll do everything they can to do
it.
We know we’re going to be in League One next
season. Are there any of these under 18s who
could potentially be involved, do you think?
I’d like to think so. There’s some good players
in that group – you obviously don’t have good
teams without good players, and I think, on the
whole from what I’ve seen, they’ve been one of
the better teams at their own age group.
Physically, they’ve got work to do to get around
the first team, but in terms of their ability with a
football, we’ve got players in there who can go
and push to be around that first team set-up,
and hopefully they do that.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Historically, this is a club that does offer
opportunities. You look at Matty Wolfe who
is in the first team, Joe Ackroyd and Aiden
Marsh have made their debuts this season.
Can the young lads use that as inspiration and
see there is a chance if they put their minds to
it?
They need to. As long as they’ve seen people
get opportunities, I think that has to be a driving
force to push on and try and get to that point
where, not only are they making debuts, but
they’re trying to get in on a regular basis, like
Matty has done this season.
It’s brilliant for them that they can see the
pathway, but it’s up to them to push themselves
forward into the reckoning.
UNSUNG
HEROES
Neil Richardson
28
ome might call it a modern injustice,
others see the unsung hero as
a typically good old British way
of knuckling down for the cause
without fanfare; something which seems to
be of huge value to our little island.
Many have been posthumously recognised
for their contributions, albeit too late in some
people’s eyes.
Alan Turing, the man credited with breaking
the enigma code in WWII and ultimately
turning the tide in the favour of the allies. Never
recognised when he was alive due to the
classified nature of his work, disgraced due to
archaic laws, the Queen officially recognised
him in 2013, some 61 years after he died.
Peter Taylor, Brian Clough’s not-so famous
assistant who is generally considered to be
the man that looked after the football while
Cloughie did the man management. With
league championships, league cups and
European cups on his CV, he will always be
recognised as a number 2.
Murdoch from the A-Team, Howling Mad as
he was known, they had to break him out of
the veteran’s hospital every time someone
found them when no one else could help.
We all wanted to be BA, we wanted to drive
Face Man’s Corvette and make a plan like
Hannibal, but without a spiked glass of milk
and Murdoch’s skills as a pilot, they’d have
not got anywhere fast.
And so that brings me to……….
THE 1912 CUP FINAL WINNING SQUAD
The crowd that assembled to watch the
1912 FA Cup Final was some 15–20,000
smaller than previous years but they still
filled the ground and there was little spare
space. Some spectators took to the trees
around the ground and a group of WBA
supporters tried to launch a blue and
white striped hot air ballon but it burned
before it left the ground. This failed stunt
became a metaphor for a game that
also failed to rise to meet the spectators
expectations.
Very much on the back foot throughout
the match, our lads had to dig deep,
defend well and play a game that would
not only match the West Brom attack, but
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

29
to also try and nick a goal in the process.
WBA had a couple of chances early
in the first half when Jack Cooper, the
Barnsley goalkeeper, fumbled a shot from
Baddeley but he did not have any support.
Cooper was again tested when Jephcott
centred the ball several times but again
WBA did not press home the advantage.
Barnsley had similar problems exploiting
an advantage when Harry Tufnell and Wilf
Bartrop got through unmarked on the right
wing.
The third drawn FA Cup Final in as many
years drew aggravated comments from the
departing crowds. But it was the replay at
Bramall Lane that would see us run out as
winners following a last minute extra time
winner from Tufnell. It was Bartrop who
would get the Manchester Guardian man
of the match award. Sadly, Wilf would have his
life cut short after succumbing to the horrors of
the great war, just four days before the fighting
ceased. Jimmy Moore lived to the ripe old age
of 80 and was the last of the cup winners to
pass away in 1972.
Sadly, all good things come to end, with this
being my last regular column for the matchday
programme. I’ve written for six seasons now
and the time is right to pass on the baton. I’m
hoping to return periodically for any special
artwork or articles that need a fan’s eye view.
Here’s to next season, then. While
disappointment is obviously on everyone’s
mind after suffering relegation, some of my
best recent memories have been in League
One…every cloud.
36
t has been a very consistently
inconsistent Sky Bet Championship
campaign for this afternoon’s final
visitors to Oakwell during this 21/22
season.
North End come into this penultimate fixture
having won 14 games, they’ve lost the same
amount and have racked up 16 draws. Nobody
has drawn more matches in the division this
term, although they’ve only done so once in
their last seven fixtures.
They have been defeated in their previous two
games. Beaten soundly - 4-1 - at Deepdale by
local rivals Blackburn Rovers on Monday, and
prior to that, seen off 3-0, away at Fulham. The
‘new manager bounce’ that Ryan Lowe brought
upon his appointment back in December, after
replacing Frankie McAvoy soon dissipated.
On the road, they’ve not won in their last
five outings. But they did see off the Reds in
what was Lowe’s first game in charge, back
in December. In a game that was pretty even
in the main, the Reds, who’d levelled the clash
through Cauley Woodrow surrendered the
game as we approached the last 10 minutes,
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
as Daniel Johnson won it at Deepdale, taking
advantage of poor Barnsley defending of a setplay.
A common theme, sadly.
But we did edge this fixture here at Oakwell
last term, coming from behind to nick a 2-1
home win when both Alex Mowatt and Victor
Adeboyejo scored delightful second half efforts.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

37
That is, however, our only home win in this
fixture in the last 10 years.
There are three very familiar faces in the PNE
squad visiting Oakwell this afternoon. Defenders
Liam Lindsay and Bambo Diaby are joined by
midfielder Brad Potts, who all had recent spells
here in South Yorkshire.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
Whilst up front, we’ve chosen the evergreen
Chef Evans as North End’s danger man. The
former Manchester City man has scored against
the Reds in the past on a number of occasions
but has gone 20 games without a goal,
stretching back to November of last year.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

The Lilywhites Manager
RYAN LOWE
38
he 43-year-old had a fine playing career
as a regular goalscoring striker in the lower
leagues with the likes of Bury, Tranmere
Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday. Notching
over 200 goals in a near-20-year career as a nononsense
forward, the Liverpudlian would hang up
his shooting boots four years ago now.
Having retired as a player at Bury, he took up the
managerial role in 2018 and would guide the Shakers
to promotion from League Two. That success and
Bury’s continuing financial problems saw the up-andcoming
coach poached by Plymouth Argyle, but it
meant another season in the fourth tier.
It wasn’t to be for long, though, as he then
immediately led the Pilgrims to promotion in a season
that was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unfortunately, the first year back in tier three behindclosed-doors
didn’t go as smoothly, registering an
18th placed finish. But this season saw a real flourish
in form once again, some terrific performances and
results, and Argyle were fourth in the table when he
took the role with this afternoon’s opposition.
And up until the last couple of months, it had been
a fairly impressive start to life at Deepdale for the
former Liverpool academy graduate. Lowe was
particularly scathing about his side’s performance in
their defeat against Blackburn Rovers last time out,
describing it as the ‘worst’ since his appointment,
going down 4-1 against the Ewood Park outfit.
OPPOSITION CORNER
by Matt Whiley
Jack Tucker is a regular visitor to Deepdale, and he hopes to be in the crowd here at Oakwell this
afternoon. We spoke to him to get the lowdown on our opponents today.
What have you made of the season so
far?
It's been a very up and down season
for the club. It's only when we hired
Ryan Lowe in December when the
season took a turn for the better
as we look like a much better
side compared to under Frankie
McAvoy. Whilst it's not been the
most ideal season, a lot of fans
including myself will be left with a lot
more hope for next season.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Were you happy with the January
transfer business and have the new
players had the desired effect?
I was very happy with the January
transfer window; we didn't need to
change too much as Ryan Lowe
wants to see the squad until the
end of the season so he has a better
idea of what changes need to be
made.
However, Cameron Archer, who is on loan
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

41
from Aston Villa, has undoubtedly been one of
the best moves in the league – a youngster who
is hungry, and knows where the back of the net is.
He has been a breath of fresh air.
Another who has been impressive is Bambo
Diaby – who will be familiar to Barnsley fans. He
has stepped up when called upon and he often
looks like he has a point to prove. Hopefully he
gets himself an extension on his current deal.
Who would you say have been the best firstteam
performers this season?
Daniel Iversen, Ben Whiteman, and Andrew
Hughes have been the best for me. If I had to pick
one, however, it would have to be Iversen as every
week he just gets better and makes you think he's
too good for this league – he's a freak of nature.
Are there any highly-rated young players who
have made a name for themselves this season?
As mentioned before, Archer is certainly backing
up the praise from his parent club.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END
His on-the-ball ability is immense, he knows
where the net is, and plays with a maturity
beyond his years whilst maintaining the 'rawness'
needed to be a success at this level. He's
going to go far.
What do you think the club needs to do over
the summer and into next season to progress
from this point?
We need to back Ryan Lowe. He clearly has a
plan and it's down to the owners to back him as
we do need to replace the outgoings which there
are a number of.
We have a lot of positions to buy for but, in
particular, I want to see a goalkeeper come
in (preferably break the bank for Iversen),
and a right wing-back along with a couple of
centre-backs, and a striker or two. We have the
foundations of a play-off challenging squad; we
just need to add the last few pieces of the puzzle.
nine goals in 233 League games. After spells as
player-boss of Wigan Athletic and Morecambe,
he returned to Preston as trainer and became
manager in April 1961. He guided them to the
Here’s how it will work:
For the next 17 weeks (week commencing 3 April ’22 – 24 July ’22), the Club will host a
draw whereby eight lucky supporters will receive a significant amount of money back
from their 22/23 season ticket spend.
• Those who have paid either adult, senior or young adult 19-21 rates will receive a £135
refund.
• U19 will receive a full refund on their ticket.
• U14 tickets must be purchased alongside an adult, senior or young adult ticket so the
linked supporter would receive the £135 refund.
Fans who have purchased a 22/23 season ticket within the first week of sales will be
automatically enrolled into all 17 draws, unless they win. Those who purchase a season
ticket later in the campaign will only be entered to the later draws – meaning the earlier
you purchase a ticket, the better the chance of winning money back.
Draws will be made every Friday afternoon. Winners are to be contacted by their chosen
method of communication, with a list also published and updated on our website.
nfortunately, there’s only one place
to begin and that’s with Tuesday
evening’s defeat to Blackpool. It’s
hard to say anything positive about
the game; it was very disappointing, and
I thought they looked like a much better
team than we did, and that hurt.
Obviously, with the changes that we made to
the team – with the loan players going back
to their parent clubs – I can understand that,
but the application of some of the players is
what was the most disappointing.
Blackpool looked sharper than we did, and
you could tell that they’ve had a few good
results recently and we haven’t.
54
It won’t have helped that Martin only took
over a couple of days before the game; he
didn’t have a lot of time with the players to
get his point across. So, it was very difficult for
the lad and for Tom as well.
But it’s not on the one game; it’s over the
whole season, and it just hasn’t been good
enough.
This is our final home game of the campaign,
and you always want to finish on a high if you
can. It’s about going out there and putting
a performance in for the supporters, and
hopefully we’ll see them down at West Brom
next weekend as well – which is another tough
one; they’re all tough in the Championship.
Preston will be the same as Blackpool; they’re
halfway up the league and are playing well,
but it’s important that we finish well for the
supporters’ sake.
I keep mentioning the supporters, but they’ve
followed us through thick and thin – as they
have done all season, and they deserve
something for all the disappointment.
Pre-season will be important, especially
for the younger players, because this is an
opportunity to bring them through. Jasper
Moon and Matty Wolfe have had a lot of
game time this season, which will only be
beneficial, and Aiden Marsh and Joe Ackroyd
are looking promising.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
I must say, when Aiden came on on Tuesday
night, I thought he looked bright and seems
like he has a real chance. He’s a local lad and,
in my opinion, they need introducing now and
again, and we’ll have a chance to try that next
season.
We’ve got a great opportunity to try these
players in League One, and Martin and Tom
will know the quality of these youngsters
who are coming through at U23s and U18s
level.
ISSUE TWENTY FOUR | BARNSLEY VS PRESTON NORTH END

55
I just mentioned the U18s, who are enjoying a
fantastic campaign. You don’t get to the playoffs
without a team of good players, which
is exciting for the club. They’ve got a great
opportunity to potentially win the league,
and I hope they can do it, because it’ll be
marvellous for them!
Enjoy the game this afternoon, hopefully I see
you all here next season!
