Tough swim completed by 81-year-old
• By Mick Jensen
SUMNER RESIDENT Hugh
Cable has ticked off an open
water swim that he’s been
contemplating for a while.
THe 81-year-old swam from
Taylors Mistake to Scarborough
last week accompanied by an
escort boat and friend Kathryn
Newberry on a paddle board to
guide him.
With conditions near perfect,
the 2600m distance took the
octogenarian two hours to
complete.
THe water temperature was
a cool 14.5 deg C but a little
warmer than the chilly 8.5 deg C
temperature typical in July.
Hugh is a member of the
Scarborough Dippers, which
he joined in 2019, and goes for
a swim with them every day at
7am.
Swimmers dip year round and
in all conditions and use their
gatherings to raise funds for
local projects.
To prepare for his bucket list
item, Hugh put in some extra
training and swam twice a week
from Corsair Bay to Cass Bay.
Although he is quite deaf, he is
fit and active for his age.
A former veterinarian, he and
his wife Ursula moved from
South Africa to New Zealand in
Ursula and Hugh Cable.
2014.
Ursula is also a member of
the Scarborough Dippers and
says her husband was inspired
to push himself by other open
water swimmers.
‘‘Hugh has always been a fit
and active man. In South Africa
he ran an ultra marathon and
canoed rivers.
‘‘Swimming over there was
usually done in swimming pools
though.’’
Ursula said she was proud of
his latest achievement.
He had wanted to do the
swim challenge for a while, but
there were no other items on his
bucket list at this stage, she said.
Hugh has swimming in his
genes. His father was a champion
long distance swimmer and
swam until the age of 90.
As well as enjoying his daily
dip, he is also active in his
community.
He is a member of Probus,
involved with the community
garden and sings in the Sumner
choir.
tired, he is accompanied by friend Kathryn Newberry as he
exits the water.
No budget for repair
• By Mick Jensen
IT WILL TAKE a successful
submission to city council’s draft
Annual Plan 2022/23 to get a
scruffy grass area on Redcliffs’
Beachville Rd esplanade, cleaned
up properly once and for all.
THe Redcliffs
Residents
Association has
been pushing for
the city council
to smarten up
the green area
since it was
unsuccessfully
Pat
McIntosh
sown a number
of years ago.
THe association
wants the job done properly
and ideally would also like low
wooden bollards placed alongside
the road to prevent cars from
doing damage or parking on the
Coastal Pathway.
THe city council has estimated
the cost of an irrigation system,
reseeding and installation of
bollards at the site at $162,500.
THere is no budget for the work,
and if it is to proceed it will need
to be included in the city council’s
draft Annual Plan.
THe RRA has received support
from the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board,
which intends putting in a
submission to the plan to get the
project done and is encouraging
RRA to do the same.
RRA secretary Pat McIntosh
said things had dragged on for far
too long, but she was ‘‘optimistic’’
they might now be going in the
right direction.
Information from the city
council showed that the original
re-grassing was treated as
a temporary measure, as at
that stage an installation of a
bike bump track was under
consideration for part of the
area.
THe city council has
acknowledged it hadn’t done the
job properly and further attempts
had also failed miserably.
THe grassy area remained
neglected and someone needed to
UNTIDY: The
grassed area on
the Beachville
Rd esplanade
remains bare and
neglected.
take responsibility for it, she said.
McIntosh said while areas
such as Woolston and Sumner
had been smartened up over
the the years, the master plan
for Redcliffs had never been
implemented.
She was pleased with the
response and support of the
community board and RRA
members would meet to decide
how they wanted to proceed.
‘‘THis is a high profile site we
are talking about and it is only
getting busier with the Coastal
Pathway.
‘‘What used to be a pleasant
area used for picnics and play is
full of weeds with bare patches
and is very unsightly.’’
There was a scaled down Little River Pumpkin
Festival this year because of Covid-19, but
growers still gathered to show off and compare
some giant specimens. Around 30 whopping
pumpkins were on display at the Little River
Farmers’ Market. With a buzz in the air, young
and old were able to admire and even get to
grips with the giants. The pumpkin fun day was
organised by the Little River Supporters Group
and included produce and white elephant
stalls. Funds raised went to the local school. The
pumpkin festival will return in 2023.
SPORT 7
From grassroots to World Cup tilt
It’s all or nothing for
the All Whites when
they face Costa Rica in
June for a place in this
year’s World Cup finals
in Qatar, and a former
young Ferrymead-Bays
player, Joe Bell, could
be one of the team’s
most vital players. Now
based in Denmark, Bell
talks to Chris Rattue
of the New Zealand
Herald
EVERYTHING IS on the line
against Costa Rica isn’t it?
It’s a huge game, the World
Cup is a dream of mine, and
I’m sure my teammates as well.
But we do face this day in and
day out in the professional
environment, so hopefully we
are prepared as we can be for a
game of this scale.
When does the Costa Rica
homework begin?
Not so much yet, we are
all balancing it with our club
careers at the moment, but it will
be coming. Danny Hay and his
staff will spend hours and hours
trolling through clips of Costa
Rica, finding their finer points.
The most basic stuff we always
get is about an opponent’s
formation, general game
philosophy, are they possession
based or long ball, do they go
direct to their No 9, or do they
look more for wingers in behind.
There will be information for
specific players, their tendencies,
their main threats, players who
pose something different.
And they will try to counter
us. They will know Chris Wood
is very dangerous in the air will
try so minimise the crosses.
Did you watch the famous
All Whites’ qualification games
against Bahrain which got them
to the 2010 World Cup finals in
South Africa?
Absolutely, although I don’t
think you quite understand
what the accomplishment was
when you are a 10-year-old.
But it was fantastic for the
country. Watching players like
Winston Reid and Ryan Nelson,
they quickly become your role
models. Now we are the ones
stepping out on the pitch.
Ryan Nelsen was the driving
force back then – have you met
him?
He visited us during the
World Cup qualifiers in Qatar. I
might have met him before, we
are Christchurch boys, but not
formally like that.
He talked a lot about the
feelings he misses now that he’s
hung up the boots, about trying
to take in that moment, and
understand the responsibility.
We are not just playing for
ourselves and representing
everyone in New Zealand, but
also the players we played with
and the coaches who brought
us all up. He wasn’t trying to
put on a sense of pressure … it’s
about that feeling of fighting and
playing with your best mates.
What are those All Whites
bonds like?
There is nothing more special
than coming back to play with
our New Zealand team mates
and friends, knowing you can
look to your left and right and
see someone who would die for
you and your country.
The bonds have grown over
time. I did three years in the
Wellington Phoenix academy
with the likes of Sarpreet Singh
and Liberato Cacace, and we had
a bit of a rivalry with the Olé
Academy players like Eli Just,
Callum McCowatt and Nando
Pijnaker. It was really good to
have that competitiveness and
we’re all great friends now.
You were born in England . . .
In Bristol – we moved to New
Zealand when I was three. My
parents were always planning
to leave England and were a few
weeks away from moving to
Canada – they had done all the
paperwork – when they decided
to give New Zealand a go at the
last minute.
My mum (Caroline) is a
psychiatrist and New Zealand
was keen on bringing doctors
over at the time. Mum and
dad (Richard) came over by
themselves for a few months and
just loved it. About a year later
we were set up in Christchurch.
It’s always a bit difficult being
on the other side of the world
from family but their love for
New Zealand outweighed the
negatives.
Dad is a film producer, mainly
focused on advertisements and
music videos, and is also a film
teacher in Christchurch.
Are you from a footballing
family?
As far as I am aware none
of our Bells have played
professionally. My dad played
and coached a bit and is a diehard
West Ham fan. I tried
really hard to support them but
he figured out relatively quickly
I didn’t. I love Barcelona. I’m a
big fan of Lionel Messi, the best
player in the world.
Any football heroes?
David Beckham at a young
age, but once I understood the
game better and developed a
better understanding of my
position it became Sergio
Busquets, who still plays for
Barcelona and captains Spain.
If we qualify, Spain are in our
group – freaky. It will be pretty
awesome, an extra motivation
to give that much more against
Costa Rica.
I watched excessive amounts of
YouTube videos of him through
high school, which probably
hindered my grades a bit. I can’t
even imagine what it would be
like to play against him.
What is it about Busquets?
In my opinion he is the
best No 6 player in the world.
He clearly has no physical
attributes which help him much
in football – he plays solely on
an ability to process the game
in his brain, the way he uses
disguises, reads and understands
the game, where his team mates
and opposition players are, the
deceptions - it’s like playing
chess on the field.
It’s hard to describe a genius -
there’s a good quote about him
which says ‘if you watch the
game you won’t see Busquets, but
if you watch Busquets you’ll see
the whole game’.
‘The midfield is quite a mental game’
• From page 7
I still watch every game he
plays. And when you play against
someone like that, you get the
full understanding of how
incredible they are.
You also play with a lot of
poise . . .
I’m glad it comes off like that.
It’s about tapping into the mental
side of the game, something I’m
very interested in.
I studied psychology at college,
mainly for the sports side.
Professional football at this level
is difficult, the pressures, so it is
important to make sure you are
staying in the mindset.
The All Whites have a fantastic
psychologist Dom Vettise who
teaches the ‘green state’ – it’s
about staying in the flow state,
focussed on what goes on in the
moment and not the outside
implications.
I’m still learning but it’s
about recognising the moments
when you are falling out of that
mindset, recognising the triggers.
They could be something like
making a mistake, or like the
qualifying game against Tahiti
where they played a style which
could be frustrating. Tahiti were
very physical, using a lot of time on
the fouls, and that can easily take
you out of focusing on your job.
And one of your middle
names is Zen . . .
That was one of dad’s many
crazy ideas. I like the name. It’s
unique. Zen was nearly my first
name.
There is a growing technical
ability in the All Whites isn’t
there?
The entire squad for the
qualifiers was made up of
professional players with some in
really high-level environments.
We are starting to prove - it’s an
ongoing process - we can play
with the ball.
It’s not just technical ability,
but the mental approach. We’re
not just sending long balls to the
strikers, but try to build up our
attacks, and play out from the
goalkeeper. But that takes time
and courage on the pitch.
The Costa Rica game will be
an example of that. Can we still
play the way we want to with
such immense pressure, so much
money and experiences relying
on a single game?
Speaking of money - getting
to South Africa in 2010 was
worth millions to New Zealand
Football …
I’m not sure I want to know
the numbers but that would be
great for New Zealand football in
general. But I don’t think that sits
on people’s minds.
When did you decide that a
defensive midfield role was your
best position?
While playing for my collegiate
team in America. It’s a bit to do
EXPORT QUALITY: All
with the physical components
– defensive midfielders don’t
require too many physical
attributes, don’t need too much
speed, and the American game is
incredibly fast. That highlighted
it was a good fit for me.
The midfield is quite a mental
game, and I find that tactical
component enjoyable.
How did you end up playing
in Scandinavia?
Norway first called after the
youth World Cup. I would have
entered the (American) MLS
draft on a Generation adidas
contract, which means you are
guaranteed a three-year contract
but don’t know where. That really
bothered me. I needed more
control over the environment I
would be in. The Norway club
was less of a risk and I had a good
relationship with the coaches
after doing a trial there.
Where does playing for
Brondby sit in your career
goals?
The support for us here is
incredible, which brings the
side effects of pressure and
expectation, but that’s good.
There is a lot of pride in the
club.
I’m the same as most young
players – you aspire to go as high
as you can. I want to go all the
way to the top. It takes time and a
lot of hard work, and I must still
prove myself at this level.
Chris Wood has been thriving
in the English Premier League
with Burnley and Newcastle
hasn’t he?
He’s a role model for all New
Zealand players, in working
hard and staying committed to a
goal. And to then score goals in
the EPL, to break history as the
highest goalscorer for Burnley -
that’s a crazy achievement. He’s
also just a fantastic guy, the most
down to earth superstar I’ve met
in my life.
He’s an invaluable resource for
us young boys in the national
team setup, because of what
he’s been through, the level’s
he playing at, the fact he was
such strong connections with
everyone in the team. The more
Chris Woods we can have the
better.
What do you do to unwind,
when footballing commitments
allow?
I really enjoy the physical
things – growing up down
south I love a lot of surfing,
snowboarding, a bit of kite
surfing, mountain biking. It’s not
the easiest to do when so much is
demanded of us physically.
I’ve got All Whites teammates
nearby in Denmark – Eli Just,
Callum McCowatt and Marko
Stamenic. Spending time with
them is always nice when you
can’t do those other things.
You are not far from
Ukraine – is the war a daily
conversation?
I wouldn’t say that – we don’t
feel too many repercussions, no
sense of being unsafe. Denmark
and the club are doing all they
can to support Ukraine. We
played specific games in kits to
try and raise money to support
the people there. You see it all
through the city, many flags,
support and movements of
people.
Treasures from the past:
New Year’s Day explosive regatta
ON NEW Year’s Day of
1902 it has been reported
that the entire population
of Ōtautahi Christchurch
decamped and took to the
trains, tunnel bound for the
annual Lyttelton Regatta.
Competitive rowing
and yacht racing were
early sporting traditions
throughout the Australasian
colonies with Lyttelton’s
first rowing regatta
being held within six6
months of the First Four
Ships’ arrival – on May 24,
1851, to celebrate Her Majesty
Queen Victoria’s 32nd
birthday.
However, it was not until
1862 that the Lyttelton New
Year’s Day Regatta was
formally established in the
town’s water sports calendar.
While well attended by
‘holidaymakers’, it only
became popular with the
greater Canterbury region
after December 1867 when
the railway tunnel opened
up public transport to the
port town. And then in the
years following, the annual
New Year’s Day Regatta
grew to become the colony’s
largest aquatic sporting
festival.
On this particular New
Year’s Day in 1902, upwards
of 10,000 or more Cantabrians
gathered along the
wharves, foreshore, on the
hotel balconies and in the
sideshow alleys, to witness
the yachting, rowing and
swimming contests.
Unfortunately for the
yachts, while the day was
beautifully fine and sunny
there was no breeze to
speak of, and thus not
much of a sailing spectacle
either, with the assembled
racing yachts reportedly
laying “idle as a painted
ship upon a painted ocean”.
This unhappy circumstance
did not apparently
affect the mood of the festivities
which grew brighter
as the afternoon wore on,
quite possibly in anticipation
of its … explosive
climax.
We’re not quite sure when
Yachts Lyttelton Regatta 1890
Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum ref 14692.1
https://www.teuaka.org.nz/online-collection/1135601
this particular Lyttelton
tradition began or ended,
but the public spectacle of
submarine explosions at
the Lyttelton Regatta were
recorded from the 1890s
through to at least 1911.
On this tegatta day a
sacrificial vessel, the Ocean
Bird, had been specially
prepared by one Captain
Falconer and his torpedo
corps.
Around 3pm, the thronging
festival crowds were
alerted to the impending
explosive finale beyond the
harbour moles by a raging
fire and plumes of smoke
rising up from the doomed
ship.
After some 30 minutes,
by way of an electric cable
connected from the breakwater
through to the mine
laid under her hull, Captain
Falconer tripped the switch
and the Ocean Bird was literally
blown to smithereens
in a loud explosion and
giant water spout accompanied
by the rousing cheers
of the people.
While the New Year’s Day
Regatta and its submarine
explosions appear to
have faded in importance
sometime before World
War 1, the Lyttelton sailing
tradition has remained an
important part of the port’s
history.
With the original Canterbury
Yacht and Motor
Boat Club being established
in 1921, its successor, the
Naval Point Club Lyttelton,
celebrated the centenary of
club sailing in Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour with a
regatta in November 2021.
And we look forward
to the third season of the
international SailGP in
Lyttelton next year from
March 18-19, 2023, with or
perhaps without a spectacular
submarine explosion?
Grants to get young surfers to world champs
LAST MONTH, the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation made
awards to a couple of very special
young people – Ava Henderson
and Jack Tyro were each granted
$500 to help with the cost of
competing in the International
Surf Association World Juniors
Championships in El Salvador.
Ava will compete in the under
18 events, and Jack in the under
16.
Being selected for this event
is a great opportunity for both
these surfers. They will leave New
Zealand in late May and return
in June. The El Salvador World
Championships will be fiercely
competitive – but for Jack and
Ava, it will be exciting to test
themselves against the best in the
world.
The total cost to compete in
these events is $6500 and the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
was delighted to be able to give
both grants to help with this.
They have both been fundraising
with things such as running
raffles, a Givealittle page, and
have received help from their
respective families. Jack has been
auctioning some of his artwork
and Ava has garnered the support
of the Canterbury/West Coast
surfing community.
Ava started competing in surf
competitions at age eight. According
to the South Island Surfing
Association she has smashed
TALENTED: Ava Henderson and Jack Tyro (right) have been awarded $500 each by the Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
to help with travel costs to the world junior surfing championships in El Salvador.
through the ranks of New
Zealand surfing, winning her
first open women’s event at just
14. Early on, there were no other
girls competing, so she ended up
competing against the boys.
Although Ava is from Sumner,
she is currently at school in
Raglan. Raglan is a surf mecca for
Kiwis, and she lives with a family
there while doing her year 12
studies at the local school.
Jack lives in Sumner and won
three national titles at age 15
years. After winning his three
titles he was quoted as saying he
never thought he would win one
title – and had no words for winning
three.
He is held in great esteem for
his dedication and discipline –
attributes that would be much
needed when faced with a surf
session on a cold, grey morning.
Jack trains nearly every day for
about two hours and is usually
videoed by his father. Afterwards,
the two analyse the video as they
check up on what went well and
where there is room for improvement.
Ava and Jack are both clearly
very proud to represent New
Zealand. Although this is the first
time they have surfed for their
country, it will almost certainly
not be the last. We wish them
the very best of luck and look
forward to hearing about their
experiences when they return.
BOOST CANTERBURY
Getting boosted is the best way to fight Omicron
Local vaccination events:
Do I really need a booster?
Getting your booster makes
it less likely you’ll get really
sick with COVID-19, or pass it on.
It is the best thing you can do to
protect you and your whānau.
I’m vaccinated. Why do I
need a booster too?
After a while, your protection
against the COVID-19 virus
starts to drop away. The
booster dose gives you
added protection against
Omicron.
When do I need to
have my booster?
If you are 18 or
over and had your
second dose at least
3 months ago, it’s
time to get your free
booster vaccine.
How old do I need to be?
16 and 17 year olds are
now eligible for boosters too.
For you, it needs to be at
least 6 months since your
second dose.
I’ve had COVID-19.
Do I need to get
boosted?
Yup, because you
can get COVID-19
again! Boosters help
protect you from future
infections.
How long after
infection should I wait?
You’ll usually need to
wait 3 months before
getting any COVID-19
vaccination or booster.
More housing choice
is the way forward
Population growth, housing issues – including affordability – and climate change
are prompting a re-think of some of Ōtautahi-Christchurch’s planning rules.
Our proposed plan change
We need to build a wider variety of homes, and more of them, to suit
our changing housing needs.
For lower emissions – and future generations – we must build upwards,
particularly in and around our commercial centres within easy reach of
work, school and the shops.
Where we’ll grow
The proposed Draft Housing and Business Choice Plan Change
creates a number of residential and commercial zones in the city
and enables more and higher housing to be developed. Developments
may still be subject to a resource consent.
Lyttelton is also included because it is part of the same labour and
housing market as Ōtautahi-Christchurch.
The rest of the bays such as Diamond Harbour, Corsair Bay and
Governors Bay as well as Akaroa do not meet the same criteria, and are
therefore not included.
Check out our interactive maps* to find out what the proposed changes
mean for you and your property. Visit ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay
(Draft Housing and Business Choice Plan Change).
Prestons*
Growing in the right places
While we must follow the Government’s direction, we’re proposing that
some areas have qualities, known as Qualifying Matters. This means the
rules enabling increased development would not apply, or would be
limited, and development remains subject to resource consent approval.
This could be because of their significant heritage or character value, or
because of specific hazards like rockfall, erosion, tsunami or flooding.
Through our Draft Heritage Plan Change, we’re proposing Lyttelton
township be exempt from as much intensification as other residential
areas. This is to protect its significant heritage and identity. Visit
ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay (Draft Heritage Plan Change).
Coastal hazards – preparing for change
We’re already feeling the impacts of climate change. We need to
plan now for the effects of coastal hazards on our communities,
infrastructure and environment, so that we are ready for what we
will be facing in the future.
We’re proposing changes, via our Draft Coastal Hazards Plan Change,
to avoid increased risk of harm to people and property from coastal
hazards such as flooding, tsunami, and erosion.
The Government wants us to grow up!
We’ve been given direction by the Government to enable more housing.
This means in most urban residential zones of the city people will
be allowed to build up to three houses per section, and up to
12 metres high (three storeys, depending on building design) without
a resource consent.
Even greater building development – both residential and commercial
– would be allowed within and around the central city and suburban
commercial centres.
