SYRIAN REFUGE CRISIS
When a large influx of Syrian refugees
began arriving in the winter of 2016,
Carlington Community and Health
Services approached Dovercourt for
assistance.
The CCHS were running parent and
child programs in the Travelodge Hotel
and they needed help with
programming activities.
Many families spoke little to no English.
And were recovering from the
aftermath of their journey from wartorn
Syria.
Most of the children had never
experienced structured recreational
programming. Concepts like sharing,
standing in line, and taking turns was
also new.
Dovercourt staff helped out. And as a
result Dovercourt and the other
partners won an award from “Growing
Up Great” for this work.
2016 BIG INITIATIVES
LEGEND SOFTWARE
Although launched in December 2015,
2016 was the first full use of the new
software to manage our memberships,
bookings and class and camp
registrations.
! In this year, not only have we had to
adapt numerous systems to
incorporate the software, we have
become a top resource for our sector
on new software decisions and
implementation.
! Legend has over 20 Canadian clients
including the City of Ottawa and the
City of Hamilton.
SJAM WINTER TRAIL
In 2016, local resident and experienced snow
groomer Dave Adams spearheaded a
collaborative community project. He joined
forces with Dovercourt and the result has
been phenomenal.
! Funding came from a variety of sources
including nearby community associations,
our city councillor Jeff Leiper, and sponsors
Fresh Air Experience and a grant from MEC.
! Our key partner the NCC provided access to
the land, start up monies, and support along
the way.
! But it was the community that surprised us
with their generosity and enthusiasm
raising over $27,000 from over 400
contributors.
VAN LANG FIELD HOUSE
