SPRING CONCERT

The Music Department held its annual

Spring Concert on 5 May. It was a perfect

opportunity to see all of the School

ensembles perform, including the Concert

Band, the String Orchestra, the Chamber

Orchestra and the Sinfonietta. This year

the concert featured a performance of the

ever-popular Carnival Of The Animals by

Saint-Saëns. Well done to all musicians for

such a delightful evening.

ENGLISH ENRICHMENT

AT THE GLOBE THEATRE

FIVE TIPS TO SAVE

WATER

Third and Fourth Formers spent an evening at The

Globe Theatre seeing the hugely enjoyable Much Ado

About Nothing, Shakespeare’s much-loved comedy

of new beginnings. It was lovely to hear pupils so

enthusiastic about the play as they came out.

The School's Green Council has been working hard on

its water-saving campaign. Green Council members

created a video featuring their five tips to help maximize

your water efficiency and reduce your environmental

footprint. To watch the video, please click here.

CELEBRATING SIX YEARS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

Since its start up in 2016 by Ms D'Cruz, Computer

Science is now being offered to pupils in all

forms. We spoke with First Former Thomas and

Sixth Former Christopher about their experience

studying the subject.

What have you enjoyed most about studying

Computer Science so far?

So far in Computer Science I have

enjoyed programming the BBC Micro:bit,

especially when we connected each others'

via radio and used it to send messages.

Are there any things you do at home in relation to

Computer Science?

Out of school, I started with Scratch

programming and now do Python coding

(I created a program that lists the numbers

in the Fibonacci sequence in Coding

Club). Recently I also build a "bot" for

Discord (a messaging service I use with my

friends) to send automated content on

request in the chat space.

What are you most looking forward to learning in

Computer Science?

I am most looking forward to learning

about website development (I think we do

this in Second Form), as well as further

programming.

What have you enjoyed most about studying

Computer Science?

I have enjoyed learning about the digital

world, particularly the operation of

computer hardware and the ways that data

is encrypted and securely transmitted.

I have also enjoyed the extra curricular

programming challenges I took part in,

which developed my logical reasoning and

programming skills.

Are there any things you do at home in relation to

Computer Science?

Outside of school I do small projects,

usually involving programming, such as

making a chatbot and creating simple

games. I am also interested in the history of

computer science, and have visited the

National Museum of Computing in

Bletchley Park and the Science Museum to

learn about this.

How will you apply the benefits from the lessons

learned in your future studies and career?

Programming is without doubt the most

useful thing that I have learned from

Computer Science. It will be useful for

me both personally, as it forms a basis

for interacting with technology, and

professionally, since it is used so regularly

by engineers.

SPORTS NEWS

ATHLETICS

An excellent and competitive game of cricket to

start the season! Last weekend the First team won

by 65 runs against Queen Elizabeth's School Barnet.

Athletes are off to a flying start! Lots of progress has

been made with changeovers and we look forward to

following their performance this term.

TENNIS

Fantastic results from St Albans School tennis players! It

was a cold and competitive day at the boys' tennis county

championships but after some excellent tennis, lots of fun,

and a great run to the final against Sandringham School, our

top pair Dylan and Elliott placed second. Meanwhile, the

girls’ team played some excellent tennis in the Hertfordshire

Schools' County Championships, finishing second and fourth.

Congratulations to all for these great achievements.
