EDITOR'S
LETTER
"April showers bring May flowers" as
the old saying goes. There's
something about May that brings
new beginnings.
I was doing yard work when I
noticed a small aqua colored broken
egg shell on the ground. I looked up
into a small tree to see a nicely
constructed bird's nest. I stood
admiring the nest for a few minutes
noticing where it was delicately and
meticulously placed. Without going
through the details and specifics, it
would be hard for something to get
to the nest. It was secure.
New Beginnings, that's what I think
when I think about May. Breaking
ground; sowing and watching the
growth and production of what was
sown.
Gardening can be compared to
everyday life. I've heard it said that
we serve a "crock pot" God.
It's all in His timing. He prefers
"slowly and patiently" over the
"microwave" society that wants it
now.
We can learn so many principles just through gardening - Hard work, caring for and
nurturing, watering and weeding, patience, the principle of sowing and reaping
and I'm sure you could name a few more. It's not an easy task, yet it can be very
rewarding.
I heard David Jeremiah tell a story of a man who climbs a mountain. He struggles up
the path, taking frequent stops to catch his breath before continuing the slow trek to
the top. He reaches the crest just as his friend steps off a helicopter. Which man
enjoys the view most? The one from the helicopter says, “It’s a nice view, but
probably not worth the price of a ’copter ride.” His friend looks at him for a moment
and says, “It’s the most beautiful view I’ve ever seen. Every aching muscle in my body
makes it look that much better.”
The hard work will be worth it. The hard way is an investment. Robert Frost said, “The
best way out is always through." Let May be your "New Beginning".
Hello. My name is Christopher Paul Jones (Chris). I am the proud Father of Christopher, Christina and
Maggie Lynn and I love them with all of my heart and am proud of each one! I am so happy and proud to
be a part of the New Journey Radio Family. I was born in Greenville, South Carolina many long years ago,
but I have lived in Conway South Carolina since the age of 11.
My Dad and Mom are Dr. M Randall Jones and Juanita Jones. My Dad was the pastor at Langston Baptist
Church for most of my life and still preaches for revivals and conferences even at the age of 83! My mom
had her hands full taking care of me and my three brothers and one sister and a crowd of friends that
would always be gathered at our home! Mom is still doing that today!
I started singing in church with my brothers and sister and my Dad when I was just 4 or 5 years old. I sang
in my first quartet when I was 12 when some friends and I formed a group called the Disciples. We had a
great time traveling to different churches to sing and worship God all through my high school years. When
I was 19 I began singing with some friends in a group called the Redeemed Quartet and sang with them
until age 26. I then sang with my best friend Steven Jones and we went by the name of the “Jones
Brothers”. We still sing together from time to time.
I started working in Southern Gospel Radio in 1995 at WSTS in Fairmont North Carolina. I co-hosted the
morning show with Beth Jarrells and our program was called “The Jones and Jarrells Morning Show”. We
had a fantastic time for the 6 years I was there. We met many wonderful artists and interviewed everyone
from Gerald and Jason Crabb to Vestal Goodman. George Younce and Glenn Payne and even Bill Gaither!
Wow what a ride! I left WSTS and I sang full time as a soloist for several years and then sang with “Mended
Wings”. Currently, I own and operate Coastal Security Insurance LLC in Conway which is how I make my
living. My passion is singing gospel music and sharing the love of Jesus with Christian Cross Roads. CCR
began in 2014 and today the members are Christina Lambert and Jason Lambert, Susan Powell Johnson
and Jeff Johnson and Chris Jones (me) and My sweetheart Bonita Eileen!
Now the New Journey Radio Family Story: My introduction to New Journey occurred on a
Tuesday evening while rehearsing with CCR. Christina and Amy McClain and I were singing and
took a break. I was scrolling around on Face Book and came across Russell Wise and the “Great
at 8 show”. I was hooked from the beginning! Russell told me about the New Journey Radio App
which I immediately downloaded onto my phone and I have listened to the great Southern
Gospel music every day since! I also began to listen to “The 3rd cup of Joe Show” with the man
himself, Bobby Richardson! Very quickly my morning routine consisted of listening and watching
the Face Book live program every morning from start to finish. I loved the fact that Bobby was
playing music from artist and groups I had never heard before and it was great to be able to
meet and become friends with the people that were singing. I can't list everyone, but some

P A G E 7 | N J R D I G I T A L | M A Y 2 0 2 2
Ithat became my favorites and my friends are Don Stiles, Cross Anchored , “Fields of Grace” of
course, Bonita Eileen. Thank you, Bobby Richardson, for giving CCR a shot as well!
Bonita and I met through NJR and I played her music. We met for the first time in Cullman,
Alabama. We have been dating for 2 years now and yes I love her very much!! I think she likes me
a little.
One morning Bobby asked if someone could call in and give their local weather report on the air
and I did and the rest is history! I made many friends who became prayer partners with me on
NJR. Margaret Strickland and Rose Lee, Agnes Rosalina Young , Mike McCrelles and Jantina De
Haan-Baksteen are just a few. Jantina contacted me via Messenger one day and told me that she
was praying that I could have my own show on NJR. Thanks Jantina for listening to the Holy Spirit
because it was not long after that Bobby and I connected in Myrtle Beach at the concert of Hope
and we talked and prayed. In September, 2020 “The Not So Late Show” was born “The Not So
Late Show” comes on Monday and Wednesday nights 9:00 until 11:00 EST. I play the very best
music on the planet and we have some great laughs along the way...and oh yes, we “Have a Little
Church”.
I keep talking about the NJR Family and that is how I feel about NJR. Bobby and Amy Richardson,
Donna and Greg and Ben Journey and all of the DJ’s are just wonderful people but besides that
all of the listeners and the ones who watch on YOUTUBE truly have become my friends and my
family! Thank you all for being a part of the Family. Thank you Bobby for the opportunity. Thank
You God for everything!

Meet the Bates Family!
Husband and wife Tim & LaDonna Bates and their daughter Laykin Bates

The Bates Family is from Dover, Pennsylvania. Our family has been on the road for
over 36 years and we play around 80-90 select dates per year. A Bates Family
concert offers a balance of music and ministry. We love to have fun so you may
laugh, cry, or even shout a little bit - who knows, maybe all three. The most
memorable time was the day that Laykin asked us to train her to sing with us. It was
so sweet. She said she wanted to tell somebody about Jesus too. Our music can is
available at all streaming outlets and our website.
HAVE YOU
GOT ANOTHER
CHECK?
In the early 80s, I played piano for my buddy, Tony Peace. You may know him
fron singing with The Wilburns, Palmetto State Quartet, The Kingsmen & The New
Dove Brothers, but before all that, he was a Minister of Music at several Metro
Atlanta churches. In fact, in 1984, he and I were instrumental (pardon the pun)
in starting the New Fellowship Church in Lithia Springs, GA. We, along with
Pastor Terry Marbut, saw that little congregation grow to
become one of West Georgia's finest churches. We were
always known for our old fashioned style of preachin',
singin' and heartfelt worship.
Even in the formative years of New Fellowship, we
always brought in the very best that the Southern
Gospel industry had to offer. Artists like Gold City, The
Greenes, The Ruppes and The Perrys graced our
platform more times than I can recall. Our
Homecoming Sing always seemed to fall on the
Sunday after NQC. One year we booked The Hoppers
CHARLIE SEXTON
for the afternoon concert, thinking that we'd have our
new sanctuary ready for dedication that Sunday, too.
Well, it didn't turn out that way. There were many unexpected problems that
prevented the building from being completed, so Claude graciously agreed to
performed that evening outside at the construction site. Without giving it a
second thought, we quickly set up a makeshift stage right beside the freshly
dug septic tank pit! That was a night I'm sure they'll NEVER forget!!
One year, I decided that I really wanted to bring in the legendary Speer Family,
so I called Ed Harper at their booking agency and we discussed a date and
time and the financial arrangements. I must admit, the the figure we settled on
was considerably more than we had ever agreed to for any group before, but I

P A G E 1 3 | N J R D I G I T A L | M A Y 2 0 2 2
just knew that we simply had have The
Speers that year for our Homecoming. I
also knew that God would make a way
for us to be able to meet our obligation.
Finally, the much anticipated day
arrived, and I awoke that beautiful, Fall
morning to the loud ringing of my wallmounted
telephone. Groggily, I
answered. "Hello???…” On the other end
of the line was a sweet, little man with a
happy lilt to his voice who said, "Mr.
Sexton? This is Brock Speer, and we're in
town and ready to sing for you today. I
was noticing that it's a Homecoming
service, and I just wanted to see if Faye
needed to bring something for the
afternoon lunch?" "Er... um... No, sir! No,
that won't be necessary. I'm sure our
ladies have prepared more than enough
food. Ya'll just come on over. We have
been looking forward for this day so
long..." I sputtered.
Our attendance was unusually low that
day, but The Speers performed as if the
house was full to capacity. Because the
weather was so nice, the meal was
served across the creek near our Rock
Altar on some long, red oak picnic tables.
When everyone had their fill, we returned
to the sanctuary for more singing and
ministry from this precious, legendary
family.
After the service, I presented Mr. Brock
with a check for the contracted
amount. He thanked me, and without
looking at it, pocketed the check and
turned to go. He got about half the way
back down the long aisle toward the
front, and with the swiftness of a man
one third of his age, he spun around
and called out "Charlie... Wait just a
minute!"
My heart was in my throat. Had I
misunderstood? Did I fill out the check
incorrectly? Was there a problem? He
grabbed me by the arm, and escorted
me out into a private corner of the
vestibule. I was on the verge of panic.
Pulling on my arm, he whispered in my
ear. "Charlie. Have you got another check
with you? If so, I want you to go and
make one out for HALF the amount that
our contract stated. I really feel like the
Lord would have me do this for New
Fellowship today."
Needless to say, I was speechless. With
tears in my eyes, I could hardly see the
checkbook as I scribbled out a reissue.
What a blessing that dear, old Soldier Of
The Cross was to me that day. What a
lesson I learned from his obedience.
What an example he was to me in how a
Southern Gospel Artist should conduct
himself. I'll never forget it, and I pray that
someday, I'm able to make a similar
gesture to some young, unassuming
upstart and can show him the love of
Jesus like Brock Speer did for me that
day.
Post Script: I was able to do this very
thing not long ago at a little church up in
Tennessee. It warmed my heart to get to
do so. I prayed that somehow, someway
God pulled Brother Brock over to the
balcony of Heaven, and let him see how
he had influenced me. I challenge any
artist that may be reading this to pray
for an opportunity to be that kind of a
blessing. Try Him, and see won’t He pour
you out a bigger blessing than even YOU
can dream.

"How much is it?" "Whatever God lays on your heart,"
can be heard by Mike McCrelles after someone tries
on one of he and Karen's many repurposed jackets or
shirts. Project Repurpose is a husband and wife team who find slightly used
men's clothes, purchase them, and pay to have them cleaned and pressed.
Mike loves the fact that artists can make an apparel change right before
taking the stage and feel better about themselves by doing so. "I'm overjoyed
that God has chosen Karen and I to do this," says Mike.
I thought I was a pretty spiritual
person until my children started
playing guitars. There’s nothing quite
like a pre-teen and teen onslaught of
rock-n-roll guitar riffs (yes, you read
that right, and no, Momma does not
approve) cranked at top volume for
hours on end, to remind a girl she’s no
saint.
Prior to my blossoming talents driving
me insane, I spent my days easily
slipping away to pray, and pressing
play on a whim to enjoy a song of
praise and worship. I could sit and
read my Bible with relatively no
distractions, and I would have boldly
proclaimed to you that nothing could
steal my peace.
But then came the noise.
TURN IT
UP!
by Elise Ingle
Want to see just how ratty your rags of
righteousness are? Try focusing on the
still, small voice of God over an electric
guitar cranked to max volume,
thrashing minor heavy-metal chords
at 200bmp. I can hardly hear myself
shouting, “TURN IT DOWN!!”, much less
the sweet voice of the Holy Spirit
through a verse I’ve just reread ten
times because I keep losing my place.
Trust me, even with earphones in, at
an ear-splitting level, there’s no
drowning out the doom and gloom
chord-astrophe coming out of my
living room.

P A G E 1 8 | N J R D I G I T A L | M A Y 2 0 2 2
Yesterday I came across an entry in my
prayer journal thanking God for those loud
guitars. If my peace and quiet hadn’t been
disrupted, I would have never noticed the
true shape I was in. When my days were
filled with calm, I called it “a good day in the
Lord”, but as soon as the noise machines
took over, I instantly lost my peace and my
patience.
You’d think with all my reading and praying
and singing along to Christian music, that I’d
be filled with the Spirit. But a little bit of
noise exposed the truth. I wasn’t filled with
the Spirit so much as I was just filling up
time.
I did the same thing, the same way, every
day; reading, praying, and listening to my
gospel jams in peace. On a schedule. My way.
That was my routine, and I liked it that way.
But routine has never been known to be a
friend of healthy relationships.
I know you love your quiet time as much as I
do. But should you find yourself in a season of
upset, overwhelmed by a lot of noise, let it do
for you what it has done for me: reminded me
that I still have room to grow, as a child of
God and in my relationship with Christ.
If the noise will make us more dependent on
Christ and less dependent on ourselves, well,
then crank up the volume! If the chaos will
drive us deeper into His arms, then let the
rock-n-roll storms rage on! It is better to know
and need Him more in the uproar, than to
quietly drift away.
“But the God of all grace, who hath called us
unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after
that ye have suffered a while, make you
perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” 1
Peter 5:10
Elise Ingle, Singer/Songwriter -
Fields of Grace
Sometimes life is noisy and chaotic. If we
can’t have a good day in the Lord despite the
noise, perhaps a lack of peace and quiet isn’t
our real problem. Perhaps it’s a relational
problem.
It can be so easy to fall into routine within a
relationship. Especially your relationship
with God. After doing the same things the
same way for a while, you may not even
realize you’re just going through the
motions. Without even knowing it, you can
transition from acting from a heart of love to
simply acting out of routine. Little by little,
the distance grows between our hearts and
the heart of the Father. Not because we
mean to, but because we just don’t notice.
Flustered and humbled by my lack of
patience with my children, those obnoxious
guitars drove me into more heartfelt
prayers, more dedicated Bible study, and
more genuine devotion. I desperately longed
to hear God’s voice. I desperately longed to
be filled with His Spirit. And I desperately
wanted an unperturbed peace.

Reflections from
Mayberry
/ by Donna Journey
My husband, Greg, and I both were raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Carolina. It is the beautiful range of mountains that are located in the eastern United States,
and extends 550 miles southwest from southern Pennsylvania through Maryland, West Virginia,
Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. These mountains are a
beautiful reminder of both mine and Greg’s childhood and many fond memories of our parents,
grandparents, relatives and folks that are dear to our hearts. So each month we will be sharing
some of those precious memories with each of you.
My first recollection is set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains around the year 1960. My Mom and Dad, and my sister,
Vickie, were anxiously awaiting my arrival. It was a hot June day
in the foothills that day when I decided to make my appearance.
My sister was 10 years old when I came along so over the years she
has been like another Mama to me. I am SO blessed to have the family God gave me. This month
is the month we celebrate Moms and I was blessed to have one of the best Moms! She loved her
children and always worked hard to make sure her children were clean, dressed neatly and had
delicious food to eat.

She worked at a textile mill in the daytime and helped Daddy on the farm when she came
home. She sewed most of mine and Vickie’s clothes and we raised and grew most of the
things we had to eat. She and Daddy taught us to sing at a very young age and made sure
we were in church each time the church doors were opened. Some of my fondest childhood
memories are traveling and singing with my family. Mom and Dad both taught us to love
others and to give to others freely if there was a need. We were taught to be honest, work
hard and believe that God could bring us through the hard times in our lives. Vickie and I
both were blessed to see both our parents live an active life of faith and watched them as
they served God. We were poor as far as worldly things were concerned but oh so rich in the
things that really matter most in this life. Our Daddy passed away in 1986 and our Mama
passed in 2017. We are so thankful for our heritage in the foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains of NC. That heritage made us who we are today!
