JESSIE HAD SAID THEY SHOULD GO AT MIDNIGHT.
‘IT’S THE GODS’ TIME,’ SHE SAID, NARROWING HER
EYES DRAMATICALLY. ‘ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN.’
It’s the 1980s, and in their small coastal town Ali and her best friend,
Jessie, are on the cusp. With ‘The Golden Book’, a journal of incantation
and risk taking as their record, they begin to chafe at the restrictions
put on them by teachers, parents, and each other. Then Jessie suffers
a devastating accident, and both their lives are forever changed.
When Ali is an adult, with a young daughter herself, the news of Jessie’s
death brings back the intensity of that summer, forcing her to reckon
with her own role in what happened to Jessie so many years ago.
As this stunning debut moves back and forth in time, and Ali’s secrets
are forced into the light, Kate Ryan asks profound questions about
responsibility and blame, and, ultimately, about love.
‘An exquisite study of the liminal space between words and acts,
and the necessary redrafting of our life stories. This is a golden book.’
The Art of Being a Tourist at Home takes a journey through neighbourhood
Staying closer to home makes good sense: it’s cheaper, easier, less stressful
Childless: A Story of Freedom and Longing
Sian Prior in conversation with Claire Halliday
Sian Prior arrived at the point where she was ready to start having babies—
and found they were not hers to have. Three miscarriages with a supportive
partner; a new partner who already had all the children he wanted; stepchildren;
step-grandchildren; the decision to parent solo, followed by many
rounds of fertility treatments.
After all this Sian found herself, at fifty, childless and coming to
terms. Weighing up the freedoms against the losses. Dealing with the
unacknowledged legacy of her own lost father. Observing parenthood
itself—how we succeed at it and how we fail—from a perspective outside
the trenches. Zoom invite will be emailed to registered participants at least
Presented by Burwood Brickworks
Join a behind-the-scenes tour of the Brickworks SoilFood system in the basement of the Garden Apartments
their foodstuffs into the SoilFood system which then shreds, heats, dehydrates and deodorises the waste, reducing
its original volume by 80% so it can be put to use as a soil additive for the community’s gardens. You will also learn
about the estate’s 6-Star Green Star Communities rating which comes from walkability via a shared path network
