Acadia Valley is a hamlet nestled in the Municipal 

District of Acadia No. 34 along Buffalo Trail between 

Oyen and Medicine Hat on Hwy. 41 about 14.5 km 

west of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

Acme 

Acme is a village found along Hwy. 575, 83 km 

northeast of Calgary in Kneehill County. There 

is a lively golf course, campground, curling and 

racquetball club, a swimming pool, a variety of 

parks and playgrounds, among other businesses and 

services. The name Acme is actually derived from 

the village’s railway heritage.

Bashaw 

Nestled in the valley near the shores of Buffalo Lake 

at the crossroads of Hwy. 21 and 53 and centrally 

located in prairie parkland country, Bashaw is 

less than a one hour drive from Red Deer, Stettler, 

Ponoka, Lacombe and Camrose; making it perfectly 

situated for those who desire access to larger centers 

but value the small town lifestyle. 

It is abundant in culture and pride as the community 

holds dear its Majestic Theatre, a restored 1930s 

rural wood frame “boomtown” style of theatre that 

still holds plays often and the Bashaw Fire Hall 

Museum. It was built in 1914 but has served many 

purposes since its inception including being the host 

of local council meetings, becoming home to the 

village constable and provincial courthouse, public 

library, barbershop, dog pound and RCMP prisoner 

cells which are still in their original state and office

Bawlf is a village located 24 km southeast of 

Camrose found along Hwy. 13. Camping, 

playground, baseball diamonds and a trout pond for

for a few awe-inspiring historical locations within its 

boundaries. 

The village hosts the Prairie Steam Train tours in 

the summer which attracts thousands of visitors

Big Valley - Big Stone 

railway baggage cars which display a collection of 

salt and pepper shakers and model trains. 

Another popular spot is the Jimmy Jock Boardwalk 

on 40 Main Street, East. This wild west inspired 

walkway is home to a small shops and is always 

bustling with activity once summer sets in. 

The boardwalk is named after a local Chinese 

restauranteur who operated a restaurant on this 

same site in earlier days. 

The Big Valley 9-hole Golf Course has lots of hills on 

sand greens. 

Big Stone 

Big Stone is an unincorporated community in 

Special Areas 3 located 28 km south of Youngstown 

on Hwy. 884, taking its name from nearby Big Stone 

Creek. 

Blood Indian Park is located next to Big Stone with 

the campgrounds officially opening in August of 

1987. Big Stone Trading Post offers fishing, hunting, 

and food supplies May through October long 

weekend.

Bindloss 

Although not much remains of the quaint hamlet, 

Bindloss has a store that still operates as well as a 

church. 

For the abandoned building seekers, this is a perfect 

location to find some old prairie relics standing the 

test of time. 

The hamlet was named after the English author 

Harold Edward Bindloss who wrote a number of 

notable Western novels. 

It is located southwest of Empress, approximately 10 

km west of Hwy. 41 and 97 kms. north of Medicine 

Hat. 

Bodo 

Bodo is a hamlet in the MD of Provost three kms. 

from the Saskatchewan border and named after 

Bodø, Norway. It is 35 km south of Provost and 

has an archeological dig site appropriately named 

the Bodo Archaeological Site & Centre. It is one 

of the largest and most well-preserved pre-contact 

archaeological areas in Western Canada. 

The site is approximately 200 hectares and has a 

particularly rich complex of archaeological resources 

that exhibit evidence of multiple periods of human 

activity and habitation dating back as early as 

5,000-years-ago. 

At Bodo, you have the unique opportunity to take 

part in the ongoing archaeological excavation at this 

important locale and to contribute to the discovery 

of Alberta’s exciting past.

This classic ghost town sits on Hwy. 555 between 

Bindloss and Jenner, south of the Red Deer River. 

This spot is known to be perfect for boating, 

canoeing or kayaking.

Botha holds a unique sight… the Underwood Flying 

Machine. The structure is still visible if you wish to 

drive in and examine its unique creation. 

Brownfield 

Brownfield is a small community located north 

of Coronation on Hwy, 872. Its pride is the local 

Kindergarten to Grade 9 School. It is also the place 

for the Baptist Church and active community centre/ 

curling rink and outdoor skating rink during the 

winter months. 

Buffalo 

Unlike Buffalo Lake, there is no water body but there

Byemoor 

Byemoor is home to a small hotel, arena, community 

hall, curling rink, St. Paul’s Anglican Church and 

Byemoor School for Elementary and Junior High 

students, all of which service the small farming 

community. 

The hamlet often teams up with the neighbouring 

community of Endiang, found 10 km east, creating 

the slang term ‘Endmoor’ which shows the 

amalgamation between community members and 

their events. 

This community can be found at the intersection 

of Hwy. 853 and Hwy. 589, approximately 70 kms. 

southeast of Stettler and 62 kms. northwest of 

Hanna. 

Cadogan 

The Hamlet of Cadogan located on Hwy. 600can be 

found just down the road from Provost where 108 

people as well as a general store, historic red hotel 

and modern community hall reside. 

Capt. Ayre Lake and Hills of Peace campground are 

close by which boasts a rugged 9-hole golf course, 

playgrounds, concession, beach with access to swim, 

sailboard and trout fishing. 

Camrose 

Camrose, A.K.A . Rose City is the modern-day 

bustling city of the east central region. As for 

facilities, you will find everything you could ever 

need here when it comes to amenities, activities 

and sites including museums, camping, swimming, 

13 heritage gardens and includes either self-guided 

tours or tours with costumed interpreters and a 

public 18-hole golf course. 

Tillicum Beach Park, Dried Meat Lake: 1 km east on 

Hwy. 13, 14 km south on Hwy. 956 (Tillicum Beach 

Road). A campground, walking trails, ball diamond, 

day use area, playground, fire pits, boat launch, water 

tap, pier and fish cleaning stand. 

Carbon 

This ‘Village in the Valley’ lies in the belt of 

the Canadian Badlands and is known for its 

geographical beauty including the creek that 

runs throughout. Carbon is just 40 km west of

Drumheller and sports museum, a time capsule with 

plenty of natural light and displays, many interesting 

and factual accounts of the mining era, as well as 

the development of ranching and rodeo and as time 

progressed, the cultivation of the rich soil which 

brought many new settlers from the US and Europe. 

A large unique display upstairs also tells the story 

of the 1921 Carbon Murder Mystery: three murders 

that – to this very day – have never been solved, 

making them one of the oldest unsolved murder 

cases in Canadian history. 

A campground and swimming pool near downtown 

and the larger campground is located along Hwy. 

836 on the eastern edge of the village, with plenty of 

walking trails to explore. 

Castor 

Castor is French/Latin for “beaver” and is known for 

its large duck and geese migration in the fall. Castor 

Museum houses several well-preserved buildings

Cereal was named for the grain fields in the area and 

was incorporated in 1914. In 1921 it became a hamlet of 

Special Areas #3. On Main Street Cereal has a hotel with 

restaurant, bank, post office and insurance company. Centennial Park, also on Main Street, 

has a fountain for wading and a picnic area to stop and rest. At the north end of Main Street 

is a miniature replica of the train station and grain elevator. The Cereal Prairie Pioneer 

Museum is the former railway station built in 1912. The museum contains a variety of 

artifacts from Cereal and surrounding area. There is also a caboose, jailhouse/firehall, 

windmill and hospital display. The Museum is open 9 – 5, Monday to Friday throughout 

the months of July and August. For a tour at other times phone 403-326-3769. The Cereal 

Board of Trade Campground hosts 14 serviced, pull-through sites with water and power 

hook-ups. It is open from May until October for free day use and a $25 fee for overnight 

camping. The C.J. Peacock Centre building was once the Cereal school and then Village 

Office. Today it is occupied by a few small businesses, Fitness Center, school display, Bingo 

Hall and various meeting rooms.

Access to the beautiful Castor Creek for boating, 

kayaking, paddle boarding and much more can be 

found at the bottom of 54th Avenue on Beach Road. 

Cereal 

The Hamlet of Cereal Prairie Pioneer Museum is 

a renovated CNR Station open July to August with 

limited hours but features a variety of homestead 

artifacts as well as a hospital exhibit. 

The village is located between Oyen and Youngstown 

along Hwy. 9. Cereal is home to nine businesses 

including the 7-room Cereal Hotel, complete with 

food service for hungry travellers and camping. 

The C.J. Peacock Centre, originally the C.J. Peacock 

School is the location of the village office as well 

as former classrooms being used by business and 

a playroom for preschoolers. The gym is used for 

community sports nights and the stage as a fitness 

center. 

Castor - Compeer 

Clive 

Clive, the esthetically beautiful community located 

in central Alberta just 15 minutes east of Lacombe 

and 30 minutes from Red Deer. 

The community prides itself on affordable living 

and is an ideal spot for an enjoyable country-living 

atmosphere yet still has quick access to all amenities.

Compeer 

Located just west of the Sask.-Alberta border

Founded in 1901, it was a spot Aboriginals used 

to camp at regularly. Natives would tell explorers 

to “camp here” and due to a misinterpretation, the 

explorers thought the area was called “Compeer”, 

thus the name for the community was born.

Chauvin 

The Village of Chauvin is the home of ‘Susie the 

Softball’, the world’s largest softball. 

Chauvin is located 60 kms. east of Wainwright and 

10 kms. from the Saskatchewan border on Hwy. 610. 

Explore the history of the community through a 

walking tour of several historical landmarks and 

plan a tour of the museum housed in the former 

1910 Roros schoolhouse to hear the history of the 

village through displays and artifacts donated by 

local pioneer families. The grounds display antique 

machinery. 

Stay at Chauvin’s fully serviced Kings Park 

Campground or nearby enjoy the outdoors at 

Dillberry Lake Provincial Park. 

Chinook 

Chinook is named after a “warm dry westerly wind 

from the Rocky Mountains” that Albertans are more

The Hamlet of Craigmyle is located between Delia 

and Hanna just north of Hwy. 9 by under two 

kilometres. No services. 

Czar 

Czar is a village in the MD of Provost located at 

the intersection of Hwy. 13 (Buffalo Trail) and the 

Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. 

The motto of Czar is “Where Cowboys Reign” as the 

village is a vibrant little community in the heart of 

cattle country including a bullarama in July. 

Shorncliffe Lake Park is a mere three kms. west of 

Czar on Hwy 13. 

Daysland 

Along Hiwy. 13 in Flagstaff County, you will find the 

Town of Daysland. An idyllic small town with quiet 

streets lined with beautiful stately trees. 

Coronation - Daysland 

Come experience nature’s beauty and take a stroll on 

the scenic 3.5 km. Crocus Trail. A fishpond located 

along this walk is stocked with trout every spring for

Delburne 

The Village of Delburne can be found along Hwy. 21 

in the heart of central Alberta. 

Delburne has a lot of amenities for a small village 

and is active when it comes to recreational services 

such as the 9-hole golf course, a spray park, agriplex, 

skate park, playgrounds, curling rink, library, 

museum, walking trails and campgrounds. The 

Anthony Henday Museum is housed in a historical 

CN Railway station and the Delburne CNR water 

tank tower building. 

Delia 

The Delia & District Dawson Historical Museum has 

an original 1913-1914 two-room school containing a 

restored original classroom as well as local artifacts. 

Adjacent to the museum is the only “New Ideal 

of Branfor Goold, Shapley & Co.” grist mill of this 

type in Western Canada. This wind-powered mill 

pumped water, ground grain and ran a fanning mill 

or a lumber saw. Walk on Main Street to find history 

solidified as many of the original buildings in the 

village still remain like the Delia Hospital (now a 

residence), Luke’s Diner and more. 

Donalda 

Donalda is home to the world’s largest oil lamp 

replica in the world. At 42 feet in height, it overlooks 

the coulee and lights up all night, every night. 

The Village of Donalda is located 25 miles northeast 

of Stettler, 18 miles east of Bashaw and 45 miles 

southeast of Camrose.

that still hold their historic charm. Not too far 

to the south is a bright yellow truss bridge known as 

the Dorothy Ferry Bridge. 

Drumheller 

Known as the Dinosaur Capital of the World due 

to the high concentration of fossils in the area., 

Drumheller is a popular tourist hotspot for obvious 

reasons. 

Drumheller is home to the World’s Largest Dinosaur 

named Tyra. 

In the heart of the Badlands, you will find 

campgrounds and a golf course where course 

designers decided to embrace the elements on the 

back nine – jagged hills, ancient boulders and cacti. 

Ravines jut out from all sides, elevation changes 

are frequent and fairways are an unpredictable 

connection of green patches. Tee boxes are mounted 

above cliffs, from which your ball must land on the 

fairway or fall mercy to a coulee.

Dorothy 

This quiet hamlet nestled deep in the Red Deer River 

Valley east of Drumheller and attracts visitors from 

all over for some of its well-preserved buildings 

standing tall against the badlands backdrop. 

Dorothy is a favourite amongst travellers for its 

combination of scenic beauty and rustic history. 

The hamlet has a former deep red-coloured Alberta 

Downtown Drumheller’s core has a host of unique 

shops to choose from for any personality type. 

Walk and find various dinos scattered around as 

well as music playing overhead for a lovely visitor 

experience. There are plenty of patios for outdoor 

sunshine while fuelling up your body. 

The Passion Play Interpretive Centre features 

interactive exhibits that highlight the historical 

aspects of the play’s set and costumes.

they’ll even let you climb up inside it!). You can

Empress and area is home to many bird and big 

game animals and hunting in this region is very 

popular. Many a trophy animal has been harvested 

from this region. 

If you’re looking for a great place for the family to 

spend a weekend, Empress has two campgrounds, an 

amazing splash park that’s not just for the kids, and 

movies in the park Saturday nights throughout the 

summer. 

You can also stop at Pat and Ross’s store That’s 

Empressive, and ask for a tour of the train station 

building. 

A little further along the road will take you to Dean 

and Fran Francis’s Art Studios Sagebrush Studio & 

Art Galleries. They have moved into old churches 

that act as their studio and their galleries. Outside 

they have done extensive landscaping where they 

allow their visitors to wander and enjoy the flora and 

fauna. 

Make sure to check out what’s happening at the 

Train Station, a beautiful restored historic site now 

being used as an arts venue. 

When you are looking for something to do, with the 

two rivers (Red Deer River and South Saskatchewan 

River) on either side of the village so there are always 

water activities to entertain. 

Erskine 

The unique community of Erskine has much to offer 

in the summer months. 

The most notable feature is the Erskine Grill 

directly beside the outdoor flea market comprised 

of local vendors in the summer months and can 

conveniently be found along the highway. 

Erskine has an antique shop and community hall 

with a Senior’s Centre attached to name some of 

their amenities. You can find Erskine 12 km west of 

Stettler on Highway 12. 

Esther 

Esther is located 16 kms. east of Hwy. 41, northeast 

of Oyen and east of New Brigden not too far from 

the Alberta-Sask. border. 

It was first settled in 1910 and named after Anna 

Esther Landreth, a girl in the neighbourhood. 

Many still come to Esther in search of the large dated 

prairie elevator that pierces the sky as seen on the 

cover of this magazine. 

Fabyan 

This hamlet community takes its name from Fabyan, 

New Hampshire. An exciting feature of the area is 

the historic Battle River Railway Trestle, commonly 

known as the Fabyan Trestle Bridge. This trestle can 

still be seen today as it is still used for hauling goods. 

It is a beautiful landscape for avid photographers to 

witness. 

Located 10 km. west of Wainwright, it has no 

services but there is the Fabyan campsite which is a 

great picnic and short stay campsite approx. 13 kms. 

west of Wainwright and is operated by the M.D. of 

Wainwright. 

Finnegan 

An unincorporated community home of the still 

functioning Finnegan Ferry cable car. It is named 

after John Finnegan who homesteaded on the river, 

then opened and operated the ferry. 

In 1991, the musician Tom Cochrane shot part of his 

“Life Is a Highway” music video on this ferry. 

Flagstaff County 

Flagstaff County has many amenities throughout 

the region including Diplomat Mine Trout Pond & 

Campground is located on the east side of Hwy. 855 

across from Diplomat Mine Interpretation Centre 

approx. 15 min. from Forestburg. 

Fish Lake Park, located north on Hwy. 13, two kms. 

west of Hardisty has a campground, a day use area, 

covered shelter, basketball hoop, fishing, lakeside 

gazebo, playground, beach area, swimming, fire pits, 

horseshoe pits and a golf course nearby. 

Edgerton Day Camp is another great spot as it is 

located 1 km. south of Daysland on Rge Rd 163. It 

has 12 non-serviced sites, a cookhouse for day stops, 

multiple large group areas, large overflow camping 

and parking.

Kinsella - Kneehill County

Hwy. 12.

Braconnier Dam is a secluded spot off of Hwy. 21 

south of Three Hills, Keiver’s Lake Campground is a 

located one mile south of Hwy. 583 on Range Road 

26-0. (No fishing or swimming), and Swalwell Dam 

has an abundance of camping, fishing, and day usage 

and is located southwest of the Hamlet of Swalwell 

all located in Kneehill County. 

Lacombe County 

Lacombe County is a municipal district in central 

Alberta located north of the City of Red Deer. 

The villages of Clive and Alix and the hamlets of 

Mirror and Tees fall within the eastern portion of 

this county. Visitors will be delighted to experience 

the numerous natural recreational amenities in the 

area, from lakes and rivers to ski resorts and golf 

courses. 

Whether you’re looking for a quick overnight stay 

or a long weekend getaway, Lacombe County offers 

a wide variety of sights, activities, parks, lakes and 

trails. 

One of the newest spots to open is the Kuhnen 

Natural Area located south of Alix. The 65 acres of 

forested land offers lookout points onto the river 

valley and a trail that leads down to the water of the 

Red Deer. 

Linden 

Located in Kneehill County in the central part of 

the province, Linden is found 28 kms. southwest of 

Three Hills and 26 kms. north of Beiseker. 

The area surrounding the village was originally 

settled by members of the Mennonite church but 

is now home to several prosperous businesses, an 

elementary school and mesmerizing park in the 

centre of the village. 

Lougheed 

The Iron Creek Museum in Lougheed houses 

a variety of historic buildings from Lougheed 

and surrounding areas. As with many preserved 

elevators, this site is a tribute to the dedication 

and hard work of local volunteers and history 

enthusiasts. There are ball diamonds and a local 

campground.

Kneehill County - Michichi 

Lougheed is located on Hwy. 13, near the beautiful 

Battle River Valley. 

Meeting Creek 

This hamlet is located only 25 minutes south of the 

City of Camrose nestled directly in the Battle River 

Valley. The Alberta Pacific Grain elevator, built in 

1917, remains standing as a Provincial Registered 

Historical Resource and an enduring symbol of 

prairie agricultural history, a local heritage site 

together with the adjacent Canadian Northern 

Railway depot. 

For recreation, the hamlet has a community hall, 

baseball diamonds, playground, campground and a 

linear trail system along the old railroad right of way 

and train station museum. 

Michichi 

Michichi is well known for the Michichi Reservoir 

and Recreation Area which is a favourite amongst 

visitors. 

The hamlet and next-door recreation area is 

located seven kms. south of Hwy. 9 where there is

locations, trout pond, model air craft field, the Iron Creek museum, 

curling rink, and four baseball diamonds plus batting cages. In 2022, the 

Lougheed Agricultural Society will be hosting their 99th Annual Fair. 

During the winter, the ‘hub of activity” is at the Field House-Fitness 

Centre-Arena with the a variety of Volleyball, Pickle ball, Badminton 

and Floor hockey. Over the years, community volunteers and groups 

have rallied to offer programs, Yoga Classes, Cooking Classes and 

events to attract people of all ages.

made even ‘hamburger night’ very 

inviting. In the winter, residents 

and visitors also enjoy cross 

country skiing, snowmobiling and 

curling in this inviting and friendly

to enjoy the great outdoors and learn about the 

area’s wildlife by accompanying signage along 

the trail.

Mirror is a hamlet located at the junction of Hwy. 

50 and Hwy. 21, approx. 42 kms. east of Lacombe. 

Come and reflect at the Mirror Museum on railway 

and early settler artifacts, St. Monica’s Anglican 

Church Historic Site (1894), and the restored 

wooden railway caboose and boxcar and a huge 

display of antiques for sale in Gracie D’s Antique 

shop, and home cooked meals at the Whistle Stop. 

Monitor 

A hamlet in east-central Alberta within Special Area 

No. 4, there are no services. 

Mud Buttes, a geological oddity, can be accessed 

following a sign along Highway 41 or travelling 

about 16 km. south of Highway 12, going past 

Monitor. 

The landscape shows dramatic faults and folds that 

were formed by advancing glaciers during the last 

Ice Age. 

Morrin 

Morrin, once known as Blooming Prairie, is a village 

in central Alberta found north of Drumheller off of 

Hwy. 27. 

Downtown you will find a newly renovated bar 

which was once the village’s livery building decades 

ago. Morrin has a sod house with artifacts within the 

community and two playgrounds available. 

Munson 

Munson is a small village of 170 people found 13 km 

north of Drumheller, just off Highway 56. The town 

was named by the railway and it is said Munson was 

a person connected with a law firm the Canadian 

Northern Railway retained.

New Norway 

New Norway is a hamlet located within Camrose 

County in central Alberta. 

Family-owned Silver Creek Golf Course and 

campground has 27 holes to challenge all levels of 

golfers on Hwy. 21 nearby with a restaurant and 

lounge open to the public whether golfing or not, 

pro shop, driving range and putting green. The 

clubhouse is a 1912 barn furnished with antiques 

from years gone by. 

Orkney 

Orkney is a farming community within Kneehill 

County near the Red Deer River Valley and 

New Brigden - Orkney 

Drumheller with a good sized campground, 

playground, ball diamond, church and community 

hall that was once the area’s local schoolhouse. 

Located off Hwy. 837 west of Drumheller, the 

Orkney Viewpoint is a popular tourist attraction, 

offering stunning views for great photo opportunities 

and washroom facilities. 

Orkney is also home to the Bleriot Ferry and 

campground found on the Red Deer River. 

It is a cable ferry that links the two sections of the 

North Dinosaur Trail (Hwy. 838) as it crosses the 

Red Deer River from Kneehill County on the west, 

to Starland County on the east. Operates from late 

April to November. 

This little riverside campground is perfect for 

relaxing among the giant cottonwoods. 

There is easy access to the Red Deer River for 

canoeing, kayaking, fishing or just floating along 

through the winding badlands taking in the sights.

Paintearth County 

The Hwy. 36 (high load corridor) is located in 

the middle of the County. As for places to visit, 

many flock to Burma Park which is located at the 

Battle River off Hwy. 872 north of Coronation. A 

campground, complete with playgrounds, baseball 

diamonds and a stunning view of the valley and 

Huber Dam, located from Fleet on Hwy. 12, 7 kms. 

north (37515 RR131) is a small campground, picnic 

shelter, horseshoe pits, playground, volleyball net 

available and trout fishing (electric motor boats 

only). 

Pollockville 

Pollockville has a few homes as well as a wellmaintained 

curling rink and new community hall. 

Pollockville is near the Carolside Reservoir which is 

a popular spot for fishing and camping. 

On the last Saturday in July, you can find the 

population swells by 2,000+ as visitors from all over 

Western Canada make their way to the hamlet to 

take in the annual Hardgrass Bronc Match that was 

established in 2017. 

Provost 

The Town of Provost maintains a brand new arena 

and sports facility as well as a Recreation and 

Culture Centre, plus several other facilities including 

ball diamonds, tennis courts and campgrounds. 

There is an incredible variety of sports activities, 

such as the a nine-hole golf course, a skateboard 

park, archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, 

curling, dance, discing, figure skating, hockey, 

soccer, softball, swimming and tae kwon do.

Bird watchers, campers, fishing and hunting 

enthusiasts can enjoy nature as close as the Trout 

Pond at the southwest corner of town complete with 

a brand new RV Park, the “Blue Bird Trail” south of 

town, Ribstone Creek or lakeside at Capt Ayre Lake, 

Dilberry Lake Provincial Park or Shorncliffe Lake 

(all within a short drive). 

Provost & District Museum located at the southwest 

corner of the town, historical buildings on-site 

include the Western Ridge and Stainsleigh Schools, 

Our Saviors’ Lutheran Church and two historical 

houses, an Eaton’s House and bachelor’s cabin. 

Richdale 

Richdale can be found by travelling Highway 12 east 

between Youngstown and Hanna. 

Previously an incorporated community, Richdale 

dissolved from village status on June 2, 1931. 

Today, there are a few homes as well as a well-kept 

community hall that occupy the area. 

Rosalind 

Rosalind is a village located in the prairies of central 

Alberta located on Hwy. 854, approx. 30 kms. 

southeast of Camrose. Rosalind has a number of 

small businesses, an elementary and junior high 

school. 

Double Dam Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf 

course and campground set in a beautiful valley 

nearby with a full service clubhouse and lounge, pro 

shop with cart, pull cart and club rentals available. 

Rosebud 

Rosebud sits in a sheltered valley on the Rosebud 

River near the edge of the Canadian Badlands, 

located on Hwy. 840, approximately 100 kms. 

northeast of Calgary and 25 kms. southwest of 

Drumheller. This area was called Akokiniskway by 

the Blackfoot people, which translates roughly to “by 

the river of many roses”. 

In the 1980s, Rosebud School of the Arts began 

to run a theatre, which eventually developed into 

the Rosebud Theatre where the school shifted its

Rosebud Theatre runs as a professional company 

that offers programming year-round. 

Rosebud Centennial Museum offers a guided 

walking tour that will teach you the rough and 

tumble cowboy past of the village of Rosebud. 

Rosebud also has an abundance of unique shops to 

explore in its brilliant, cohesive theme throughout 

the hamlet. 

Rosedale 

Rosedale is located at the intersection of Hwys. 

10 and 56 and Hwy. 10X, eight kms. east of 

Drumheller’s main townsite. It lies at the confluence 

of the Red Deer River and the Rosebud River. 

The 117 metre (384 ft) long Star Mine Suspension 

Bridge was built in 1931 over the Red Deer River 

used to connect the settlement with coal mines 

established on the opposite side of the river. It was 

rebuilt in 1958 and now serves as a tourist attraction. 

A miner memorial is also located here. 

Rowley 

Rowley is an amazing ghost town with an undying 

spirit! 

Rowley is 12.8 kms. north of the junction of Hwys. 

56, 9 & 27 (Morrin Corner), then five kms. west on 

Township Road 32-4 in Starland County. 

The community’s main attractions include the newly 

restored elevators which have been designated 

as a provincial historic site, the Rowley Church, 

Rosebud - Sedalia 

Prairie School Museum and the Yesteryear Artifacts 

Museum (housed in the original railway station). 

The most famous stop in Rowley is Sam’s Saloon, a 

well-known local watering hole and meeting place 

which is still used today. It is stuffed to the brim with 

interesting local history along the walls as well as the 

sawdust-covered floor and the last Saturday of each 

month to sink your teeth into hand-made fresh pizza 

while exploring the robust history this ghost town 

has to offer! 

Rumsey 

A hamlet within Starland County, located on the 

north end of Hwy. 839 and 8 kms. west of Hwy. 56 

just down the way from Rowley. Located about 40 

km north of Drumheller in the transition between 

Central Parkland and Northern Fescue Natural 

Subregions, Rumsey contains the largest remaining 

tract of northern fescue grassland in the world. 

Cultural Facilities and Historic Resources Division 

have identified the entire Rumsey Natural Area as 

a significant historic resource under the Historic 

Resources Act. 

Rumsey is also home to three ball diamonds, a 

curling rink, community hall, post office and more 

with plenty of community spirit to go around. 

Sedalia 

Sedalia is a hamlet located approximately 31 km 

north of Hwy. 9 near New Brigden. The area was 

developed when the railroad came through in 1925 

and one general store remains.

Sedgewick 

Sedgewick is a community that sprang up alongside 

the railroad in the early years of the last century. 

Sedgewick Archives Gallery Museum has access 

to genealogical research resources with microfilm 

printer/reader on site. A 100+year-old till from 

Beairsto Bros. Ltd. is displayed along with samples of 

groceries, dry goods, hardware, etc. 

The 9-hole golf course with mature trees lining the 

fairways and greens is located on the north side of 

town and has a licensed clubhouse. Sedgewick also 

has the a recreation centre which has a curling rink/ 

arena, meeting rooms and bowling space. 

Sedgewick Lake Park (non-motorized boats only) is 

the place to be in the summer as there is a wading 

pool, cabins, camping, and the Battle River Splash 

Zone Spray Park located 1 km. north of Sedgewick 

on RR 124. 


Starland County has a plethora of iconic 

campgrounds to choose from. 

The most notable is the Starland Recreation 

Area, commonly known as the Morrin Bridge 

Campground, at the base of the Red Deer River with 

hiking, fishing or boating on the river or play at the 

large playground, ball diamonds and gazebo. 

McLaren Dam, located 24 kms. north on Hwy. 851, is 

the place to enjoy a quiet country setting with great 

fishing and Tolman Bridge campground on Hwy. 

585 at the Red Deer River crossing, including parcels 

on both sides of the Red Deer River. Paddle through 

the badlands or fish along the river. There is a 

community gun range located within close proximity 

of this campground.

CAMPGROUNDS 

Starland County operates five major campgrounds. 

Michichi Campground 

The Michichi campground is located just south of the 

Hamlet of Michichi 1.6 km. It has 18 sites with power 

and 12 seasonal sites as well as an overflow area. There 

is also a washroom facility with showers, fire pits & 

picnic tables. A playground, camp kitchen and a sewage 

dumping station are also available. It is adjacent to the 

Michichi Dam, an ideal place for fishing and the new 

boardwalk with informational signage is also beautiful. 

McLaren Dam Campground 

This campground is located approximately 24 km north 

of the Village of Delia. [Take Hwy 851 north of Hwy 9 

to Twp. Road 33-4, then go 3.2 km west and follow the 

signs to McLaren Dam]. This campground is a large 

informal campground, ideal for group camping. There 

are also 18 power sites, some with water, that can 

be booked online at www.campreservations.ca. The 

campground is equipped with fire pits, picnic tables and 

a camp kitchen. McLaren Dam is an ideal fishing spot, 

with the opportunity to camp in a beautiful, serene 

setting close to the water!

Starland Recreation Area 

This large campground area is located approximately 9.6 

km west of the Village of Morrin on Hwy 27, and adjacent 

to the Red Deer River [Take Hwy 27 west of Morrin 

9.6 km, turn off the highway and go north 1 km to the 

campground]. The campground is nestled between the 

Red Deer River and the adjacent hills. There are at least 

75 available sites here and some areas are well suited 

to group camping. It is equipped with picnic tables, 

fire pits, camp kitchen and a gazebo. Together with 

opportunities to hill climb and explore, there is also a 

new boat launch located near the bridge. 

Tolman Bridge East & West Campgrounds 

These two beautiful campgrounds are located on the 

east and west sides of the Red Deer River, near the 

Tolman Bridge on Hwy 585. This is a serene setting with 

ample fishing and hill climbing opportunities. Sites are 

available on a first come first served basis. In the East 

Campground there are 40 treed unserviced sites and 

in the West Campground there are 25 open unserviced 

sites. There is one group site available with on-line 

reservations at www.campreservations.ca. Each site is 

equipped with a picnic table and fire pit and there is a 

playground on the east side for the children.

ATTRACTIONS 

Dinosaur Trail (Highway 838) 

Tour the Dinosaur Trail and visit the 

Horsethief Canyon viewpoint. The Dinosaur 

Trail also gives travellers the opportunity to 

cross the Red Deer River on the Bleriot Ferry, 

one of the last operating ferries in Alberta. 

The Dinosaur Trail also provides access to 

other tourism attractions in the County, 

including Barney’s Adventure Park and 

Cactus Coulee Fun Park. 

Hamlet of Rowley 

Visit historic Rowley and take a step back 

in time! The Yester Year Artifacts Museum, 

Sam’s Saloon and other historical buildings 

are a ‘must see’! If you are by on the last 

Saturday of each month, drop in for Pizza 

Night, an opportunity to enjoy “homemade” 

pizza and your favourite beverage!

Strome 

Strome is a small but active community situated 

on Hwy. 13 within Flagstaff County that provides 

services to the hamlet residents and to the rural 

residents in the large surrounding farming area. 

When visiting Strome, you are encouraged to 

make time to stop in at the Sodbuster’s Archives 

and Museum and just north of Strome is Wavy 

Lake, a favourite feeding stop for geese and ducks 

and a choice area for hunters in the fall. Strome 

campground is located on the northwest edge of 

town next to ball diamonds, school playground, 

hall and gazebo. A two-sheet curling rink, outdoor 

skating rink, baseball diamonds, a playground, 

community hall and a Drop-In Centre on Main 

Street is a favourite seniors’ meeting place well 

utilized for celebrations, card parties, floor curling, 

lunches, and pot-luck gatherings. 

Special Areas 

The ‘Special’ in Special Areas is an understatement. 

Special Areas is the place for abandoned building 

seekers and history buffs to explore. 

It is an unbridled lush landscape with awe-inspiring 

prairie living that brings everything into perspective. 

The unobscured view of skies rivals few and far 

between. 

As for the land below, it is rich in pasture and 

conserved spaces original to the area pre-settler era 

in many cases. 

Many areas have tiny hamlets that dot their counties 

but for Special Areas, there are approximately 2.1 

million hectares which is home to several oncethriving 

communities you can still see and support 

today.

Strome - Tees

Dam Campground and fishing area just southwest of 

the hamlet.

Tees is a hamlet found between Clive and Alix just 

off of Hwy. 12 in Lacombe County. 

You can find Tees 40 km east of Red Deer, the place 

of a famous 2-day rodeo the long weekend of August 

at its large rodeo ground facility on the north end of 

the hamlet.

Torrington was incorporated as a village until 

1997 when it dissolved to hamlet status under 

the jurisdiction of Kneehill County, located at the 

junction of Hwy. 27 and 805 east of Olds.

The Back in Time Museum & Antiques in 

Provincial Parks – Campgrounds – Lakes 

Big Knife Provincial Park 

Located on the Battle River north of Hwy. 12 at Halkirk on Sec. Hwy, 855 is open 

from May to September with 50 unserviced campsites and 11 walk-in tent 

spots for fishing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing or power-boating. Some of the 

facilities offered include fire pits, firewood, a playground, sewage disposal, tap 

water, boat launch, pay phone, volleyball court, horseshoe game space, hiking, 

geocaching and wildlife viewing. 

Blood Indian Park 

Located 30 km south of Youngstown on Hwy. 884, Blood Indian Park is situated 

in the heart of Special Areas 3 at Big Stone. It has 29 serviced sites and a 300- 

unit campground for random camping on a first come, first serve basis. Fishing 

trout, playgrounds, showers, wifi, a new splash park and a store for extra camping 

needs. Bring a boat or go swimming in the lake! 

Buffalo Lake 

Buffalo Lake is a bustling hub of activity all year round but most notably in the 

summer for its many facilities and activities along its spacious banks. 

The Narrows, Buffalo Lake Campground is located on a narrow channel in 

between the southwest end of Buffalo Lake and Parlby Bay. There are 61 

well-treed sites on a first come first serve entry. Access may be dusty due to 6 

km of gravel road before the entrance.This campground offers campsites for 

both tents and larger RV’s, pump water, fire wood, picnic tables, dry toilets, 

boat launch and a fish cleaning station. Buffalo Lake offers good northern Pike 

fishing. Also perfect for canoeing or kayaking. 

Ol’ MacDonalds Campground & Resort on Buffalo Lake has campsites suitable 

for tents to RV’s to group sites. Full service, partial service and unserviced sites 

are available with washrooms, hot showers and laundry facilities, free wireless 

internet and on-site security. It also has a wide array of amenities including 

Grandma’s Kitchen, fire pits at every site with firewood sold at the store. 

Pelican Point Park is also located on Buffalo Lake. It has 58 camp sites, a beach, 

pier on site, firepits and firewood available, fish cleaning stand, public phone, 

picnic tables, water pump and tap, showers, group rating and an interpretive 

trail. 

Buffalo Lake Provincial Recreation Area (Boss Hill) is a campground ideal to 

meet friends and family in a great setting for water-based activities and birding. 

According to research done by the University of Alberta, the lake was named 

Buffalo Lake on David Thompson’s map of 1814. It was so named for its resemblance 

to the profile of a buffalo with the legs to the north and the head to the 

east. Located off Hwy. 56, turn west on to TWP 412. 

Rochon Sands Provincial Park is another space located on the shores of Buffalo 

Lake. It is a manicured landscape that provides camping facilities and beach 

access. From the comfort of their campsites, park visitors can watch the graceful 

flight of geese on their late summer migration south. In the campground, undergrowth 

provides protection from wind while large trees create a cool, shady 

picnic area. Wherever you choose to stay, there is plenty to do at Buffalo Lake! 

Capt. Ayre Lake 

Capt. Ayre Lake Campground is located south of Hwy. 600 between Hwy. 41 

and Cadogan. It has full service campsites, a laundromat, rugged nine hole golf 

course, playgrounds, concession, showers and washrooms, beach, swimming, 

canoeing, sailboard or trout catching available. This secluded spot is a gem 

amongst the east central area. 

Content Bridge 

River Creek RV Park is located on Hwy. 21, 6.5 km south of Nevis at Content 

Bridge where Tail Creek meets the Red Deer River. Tail Creek Park and campground 

has 70 units. Coin showers, group camping, public phone, water pump, 

baseball diamonds and firewood for charge is all available. 

Dillberry Lake Provincial Park 

This provincial park borders Saskatchewan southeast of Chauvin and has an 

uncommon yet pleasant sand dune setting. The sandy bottom lake is ideal for 

swimming, wading or canoeing and the beach is great for sandcastle building. 

Wildlife watchers will appreciate the abundance of birds and other resident 

creatures. This park is internationally recognized as an important bird watching 

area for migratory shorebirds. The campground has 83 sites; most with power 

hookups, shower facilities, a playground, grocery store, fish cleaning station and 

several trails. Bears are common in the area so please be aware.

Dinosaur Provincial Park 

Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated a two hour 

drive east of Calgary or 48 kilometres (about a half-hour drive) northeast of 

Brooks. The park is situated in the Red Deer River valley, which is noted for its 

striking badland topography and abundance of dinosaur fossils. Take in the 

incredible view from the entrance sign, visit the John Ware Cabin, walk the 

Prairie Trail, dine at the Cretaceous Café and/or have a campfire overlooking the 

Red Deer River! 

Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park/ Tolman Bridge 

Dry Island Buffalo Jump is a breathtakingly scenic park in the Alberta Parks 

system located near Trochu and Huxley in the Red Deer river valley. A favourite 

spot for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers, the area boasts over 150 different 

species of birds, from warblers to turkey vultures. The hand boat launch provides 

access to paddlers who are keen to experience the badlands from the water. 

Canoeing and kayaking is also allowed. Hike on informal trails that wind through 

the coulees and native grasslands and take note of the sensitive plants that grow 

along the way. This Park is day use only, but picnic sites with fire pits are available. 

Camping may be done at Tolman east or west campgrounds at the south 

end of the park. There is 40 unserviced campsites, no reservations or firewood, 

potable water from a tap. Tolman Bridge East/West Campground can be found 19 

km east of Trochu or 15 km northwest of Rumsey. See Starland County on Page 

52 to learn more. 

Gooseberry Lake Provincial Park 

The Gooseberry Lake campground and Eccles Spray Park is located on the north 

east side of Gooseberry Lake 18 km north of Consort on Hwy. 41. There are 82 

sites on a first come first serve basis. This campground offers campsites for both 

tents and larger RV’s, nice group camping, picnic tables, public phone, showers, 

water, power, firewood, wading pool, splash park, playground, baseball 

diamond and a sani dump. 

McKenzie Crossing Campground 

McKenzie Crossing Campground is located on Hwy. 590 between Elnora and Big 

Valley with 12 unserviced sites, tables, chemical toilets, picnic shelter and boat 

launch. The picturesque Red Deer River valley and old on-way bridge make the 

location a perfect spot to spend some time at. 

Sheerness, Prairie Oasis Park 

Sheerness is an unincorporated community within Special Area No. 2, located 7 

km east of Hwy. 36, 28 km south of Hanna. The community most likely takes its 

name from Sheerness, England. Home to the Sheerness Power generating plant 

that was started in 1905 and 1906, the coal found in that time was used to fuel 

the settlers before the railway came through in 1919. Water is pumped from the 

Red Deer River into a cooling pond to provide water for the station. The cooling

Shorncliffe Lake is the ideal spot for boating, water skiing and swimming. It has 

a concession, caretaker, gates, group camping, showers, baseball diamonds, a 

beach, boat launch (all boats allowed) rodeo grounds and museum. Campers 

will notice there is 15-Amp hookups as well. Find Shorncliffe Lake west of Czar

• CORONATION: Coronation dam, rainbow trout and 

northern pike and accommodates year round fishing. 

There is a boat launch for small fishing boats (no motors). 

• HANNA: Helmer Dam - Located 2 km west of Hanna. 

Adjacent camping at Fox Lake Park. Stocked annually 

with Rainbow Trout. CN Reservoir - Located on south 

side of railroad tracks in Hanna. Previously stocked with 

Yellow Perch. 

Carolside Reservoir on the Berry Creek - Located south 

of Sunnynook at Junction Sec. Rd. 570 & Rge Rd 263A. 

Stocked with Northern Pike, Walleye and Yellow Perch. 

• HARDISTY: Fish Lake, entrance from Hardisty is 2.5 

km, lake filled with rainbow trout. Excellent for flyfishing. 

• PROVOST: Trout Pond – 6016 Lagoon Drive-located 

at the southwest corner of Provost. Stocked with 

approximately 1,500 Rainbow Trout that are four to six 

inches in length. 

• YOUNGSTOWN: Blood Indian located 19 miles (30 

km) S of Youngstown on HWY 884. 175,000 Rainbow 

trout stocked annually 29 serviced sites, 300 random 

camping, boating

• ACADIA VALLEY: Acadia Valley Dam, Ball Park and 

Campground has 10 fully serviced camping sites and has 

a man made dam great fishing opportunities. The dam is 

located 4 miles west of Acadia Valley on Highway #41.

• BUFFALO LAKE is a large, shallow lake in central 

Alberta, 40 km northeast of Red Deer in the counties of 

Camrose, Stettler and Lacombe with Northern Pike 

• CASTOR: Castor Eastside Trout Pond (34-37-14-W4) 

Huber Dam, 7 km E on Hwy 599 7 Hwy 36, trout fishing 

• CAMROSE: Pleasure Island Fish Pond - Take Hwy 12 

east of Camrose for 3 km, turn south on to Range Road 

195 for half a mile, the pond is on the east side of the road. 

Stocked with rainbow and brown trout twice a year and 10 

separate fishing stations this pond is equipped with four 

diffuser aeration systems which operate 24 hours all year
