Who are we?
How did it start?
We chose the name ‘The Swallows’
because many Head and Neck Cancer
patients have problems with swallowing
during and following treatment.
As a patient and carer group for those
affected by Head and Neck Cancer we are
based in Blackpool, but are now reaching
out to all corners of the UK.
In 2010 the support group started as a
small group of patients meeting to discuss
how they were dealing with any issues
and to share stories. A lovely lady called
Wendy Hepworth (patient) led the group
with the help of Jo Ashton, CNS.
In early 2011, with the help and vision of
Chris Curtis, the group achieved full charity
status. The charity will be forever grateful
Established
2011
We offer fantastic support 24/7 and will
signpost if that’s what you need. The
charity is run by patients, carers, family
and friends, so everyone understands the
problems when you are diagnosed.
Visit theswallows.org.uk
for more information.
for the initial foresight and work Wendy
and Jo put in during 2010 to get the
support group going.
It is important to say that whilst the charity
now helps with awareness, signposting,
campaigns and fundraising, it will never
lose the reason it all started in 2010 -
‘Supporting patients both locally
and nationally.’
Charity shop history
A largely British institution, charity shops
are retail outlets selling mainly secondhand
donated goods to raise funds for
their parent charities. Every year charity
shops raise around £300m for a range of
causes in the UK. They also function as a
way of raising awareness of the
parent charity.
The Swallows Charity Shop
We are proud to say we have our very
own charity shop on Waterloo Road,
South Shore, Blackpool - and has a
reputation for selling quality items at
affordable prices. Volunteers enjoy
working in the shop and see the
opportunity as a social gathering, and
at the same time help generate valuable
funds for the charity.
We look forward to welcoming you
anytime - you might find a bargain or two!
