Where We’re Eating
Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week
NEW JERSEY’S PREMIER

Featuring Artisan Cocktails & Spirited Gifts
Tastings, Tours, Entertainment & Events
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: The Lookout, the first of three restaurants Exit Zero

The server: Bri joined the EZ Hospitality team right before The
Lookout opened in April, but she isn’t new to the restaurant industry.
She’s served and bartended at a few places in town, including Jackson
Mountain (before it was Delaney’s), Cabanas, the Pier House and Taco

Caballito. Bri made a few suggestions, and they did not disappoint.
“The scallops are delicious, and you can’t go wrong with the lobster
bisque,” she says. “The risotto is enough to share, but the spinach and THE SYMPOSIUM
mashed potatoes are more of a single portion, which you’d want them

to be anyway — they’re both amazing.” Bri was extremely knowledgeable
of the menu and exceptional all evening.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Thoroughly enjoying this 11th week
of March. Getting Done Dirty of the
Week: “Crossing Broad,” an otherwise
delightful Philly sports blog, recently
listed their Top 10 Car Commercial
Catchphrases and my iconic character, Larry
Crinkle, was nowhere to be found. (For the
uninitiated, Larry Crinkle is a character I’ve
played in a series of commercials for Davis
Honda in Burlington, where you should buy all
your Hondas. (And no, they weren’t national
spots, I am still very poor.) I guess, technically,
Larry didn’t have a catchphrase, but I feel like
the whole character is a catchphrase.
Jay Gaskill of Villas Liquors accepted
my razzing last week in the good-natured
ball-breaking sentiment in which it was
meant. (I mean, he’s a Cowboys fan.) He
told me about the time he and a buddy trolled
Eagles fans by wearing New Orleans Saints
shirts to work, which led to, you guessed it,
ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE on social media and
in that granddaddy of local outrage, Spout Off.
Apparently, they should have been fired for
not being Eagles fans. (I mean, it’s weird to be
a Cowboys fan, but that’s a whole other conversation.)
Jay, take it from me, a guy whose
brother died of Covid but received a scathing
hate email for making a Covid joke sent by
some brave person who didn’t put their name
on it, you receive the most flak when you’re
over the target.
For the second week in a row, I ran into
Steve Bistak at Cape Harbor Shell while I was
dropping off magazines. I thought, “Wow,
what a weird coincidence.” That’s when Steve
told me he works there, that owner Jerry
Mancuso is his neighbor and was having
trouble finding help, so Steve offered up his
services. It makes me sad to think of how
desperate Jerry must have been to hire Steve
Bistak. (Shakes head sadly.)
Bravado is a new coffee shop in Villas (in
the old Boyd’s Barbecue) and, based on my
one visit, it’s pretty damn good. Took a little
while to get our coffee and breakfast sandwiches,
but they were slammed and had only
two people working at the time (not a criticism,
I know everyone is desperate for help;
just look who Jerry Mancuso had to hire), but
when we got them they were delicious. The
interior also received a nice update. Good
luck, dudes.
Also, congratulations are due for Grana
BYOB, which recently opened in the former
Godmother’s. I mentioned them in passing
last week but was remiss in not offering a
“good luck, dudes.” So, good luck dudes.

THE ULTIMATE CAPE MAY FOOD & DRINK GUIDE
What You Need To
Know About The
Food And The Vibe
Enjoy fresh, farm-to-table bakery items along with
La Colombe coffee drinks. Start the morning with
delicious sweet breads, muffins, scones and cookies.
Enjoy the quiet beauty of this 62-acre farm in West
Cape May and then indulge in the farm-to-table
treats for breakfast or lunch. The soups, salads,
sandwiches and juices are excellent.
Check out why Congress Hall’s restaurant is a favorite
of locals as well as hotel guests. They serve classic
tavern food for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with a
choice of indoor and outdoor dining.
The Boiler Room has a chic industrial vibe with
exposed brickwork, stainless steel table tops and a
dance floor that’s often bopping. Feast upon brickoven
pizza with draft beers.
Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy
renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and
there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to
enjoy great drinks and a great vibe.
Step inside the new eatery and retail store at the
Cape May ferry terminal. Enjoy a quick meal or snack
before hopping on the ferry and shop all the Exit Zero
and new Ferry Park Swag!
Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw
bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus
outside tables for some great people-watching!
As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get
Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat
pies have been receiving rave reviews.
Focused on community, this restaurant provides
fresh homemade food made from local ingredients,
including fresh-baked artisan breads.
Enjoy your meal on The Ebbitt Room porch,
overlooking tree-lined Jackson Street, or take in the
buzzy vibe of the dining room and bar.
Located in North Cape May and their newest
location on the Cape May beachfront, serving up
affordable and authentic Mexican dishes made from
only the freshest ingredients.

high-quality service, in a relaxed atmosphere.
This local legend of an eatery serves up their signature
breakfast items, mouth-watering lunches and
generous dinners all in a welcoming and relaxed
environment.
Chef Carl Messick has taken over what was once
Godmother’s and transformed it into a relaxed, finedining
restaurant. Exquisite dishes featuring seasonal

good food, regular entertainment, and the views are
spectacular.

Last week, we looked at movies coming
to theaters, but this summer there will
be plenty of at-home screenings! For
that, there are premieres worth noting
— and the first is one I know a lot more
up close and personal.
Netflix is releasing a new sports film
called Hustle, starring Adam Sandler. He’s a
basketball recruiter for the Philadelphia 76ers
who is struggling, but he discovers an athlete
who may get him back in the game! Part of this
was filmed on the campus where I work right
outside Philadelphia. Manor College is the
name of the small college and thank goodness
we have a gym that has a certain retro look
that impressed location scouts! For a week,
they descended on campus and shot various
scenes inside that gym. Sandler was on campus
with several notable basketball players
and other stars.
When I say the production descended,
believe it — trailer after trailer, trucks filled
with lights and equipment. No air conditioning
in the gym (told you it was retro), bet you
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
they brought that in and pumped it into the
building. If you watch the Hustle teaser online,
the main part of Sandler talking to his recruit
from Spain, played by Juancho Hernangomez,
was shot in our gym. I’m looking forward to
seeing the final product!
Andy Garcia leads the cast in a remake
of Father of the Bride on HBO Max. This is a
classic favorite and Garcia is a lot of fun in
comedies. Disney+ is featuring the untold
story of Jedi master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, starring
Ewan McGregor. It’s always a challenge to
find what’s new on Amazon Prime. This summer,
they seem to be pushing a lot of reality
TV. I’m assuming this audience can channel
surf for that all on their own.
Netflix has a few offerings to check out.
The Lincoln Lawyer is a new television series
that follows the 2011 movie about a lawyer
sidelined by his own bad decisions and an
auto accident. For you Jane Austen fans, an
adaptation of Persuasion comes this July. Ryan
Gosling stars in The Gray Man, a much-anticipated
spy thriller as well. Animation lovers
will want to look into a new Kung Fu Panda
installment with Jack Black reprising the title
role. The Sea Beast is from filmmaker Chris
Williams, who was behind hits like Moana
and Big Hero 6. It’s an ocean adventure for the
family.
Whether it’s on a “sheet screen” under
the stars in the backyard or in your air-conditioned
theater, there will be plenty to choose
from this summer.

4/30: Bridal Shower For Lauren Day
At La Mer Beachfront Resort
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV
Tony, Lauren
I
should begin by admitting that I have
poor hearing. Back in grade school I
looked forward to the morning our
vision was tested. Year after year I was
able to read the smallest line of type with
ease. But when the earphones went on, it was
a different story. There would be gaps in the
tonal sequence punctuated by quizzical looks
from the school nurse. It seems I was 40%
deficient in the mid-tone range, a shortfall
that has only gotten worse over time.
Be that as it may, over the course of 70
years I have gained a degree of audio intimacy
with bird vocalizations, meaning I can link
most of the bird vocalizations I hear with the
right species. Most bird watchers acquire a
measure of this skill, and it opens a whole new
avenue to discovery and wonder. We can only
see 180 degrees of the planet, but with sound
we are in touch with the world around us.
You don’t need the audio acuity of a bat
or the audio recall of an Igor Stravinski. Just
go outside, listen for a singing bird, track
down the vocalist, identify it and drink in the
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
song. Sometimes you’ll need to hear the song
several times before it sinks in and listening
to multiple vocalists can be confusing. Set
yourself a goal, one new song per day. It gets
easier with time, and you can build upon your
audio-repertoire.
Try and place the songs into categories.
American robins have a lilting caroling
song. Cardinals are single note repeaters.
Mockingbirds are changeup artists.
Repeat a phrase several times, then switch to
another phrase. Some songs like Red-winged
Blackbirds “tur-a-ling,” are simple, House
Finch’s hurried warble complex, but often
ends on a rough or discordant note. Rather
than learn the whole song, try and lock away
the opening or closing notes. Bird songs are
commonly complex. Calls are short utterances
and easily assimilated. The chattering
sound of feeding chimney swifts is part of the
summer soundscape, as is the rich burble and
chirps of Purple Martin. Head to Cape May
Point and get an earful.
You say you can’t do this. Well, do you
know the call of Laughing Gull? If so, you
can mast all the rest. The rules don’t change,
only the vocalizations. In no time you’ll be
amazing your bridge partners, pointing out
the song of American Goldfinch coming in
through the window.
There are audio aids. The Cornell website
feature’s hundreds of bird vocalizations, songs
and calls. But for learning your bird vocalizations,
nothing beats real birds in real time.

The best souvenirs add a little sparkle
to your memories. Take home some
Cape May diamonds.
The idea that “we do not remember
days, we remember moments” is a
comfort to families on vacation. Sometimes, a
day at the beach is not a day at the beach. There
may be tears. There may be rain. Someone
may use the red shovel when you specifically
called dibs. And then, when you’re tired and
cranky, there’s a line for the hot dog truck.
Those meltdowns tend to fade from memory.
Instead, we remember when the kite soared,
the boogie board delivered a great ride, or the
toddler squealed with delight as the waves hit
his toes. Cape May diamonds are the perfect
souvenir for these sparkling memories.
Cape May diamonds are not precious in
terms of dollars — a carat is probably worth
about $5 — but these bits of quartz, tumbled
to a shine by their journey down the Delaware
River, have been treasured for centuries. The
Kechemeche people, a Lenni Lenape tribe,
have gathered and gifted these stones as
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, hunt for seaglass!
tokens of friendship since the pre-Columbian
era. Some legends imbue the stones with the
power to bring good luck. Tourists continue to
value them as markers of magic days. Couples
who meet on the beach use Cape May diamonds
in their wedding rings. Families collect
them on walks — I’m looking at a baby food
jar, half-full, that my daughters gathered when
they were young. Crafters incorporate them in
jewelry, picture frames, and hair clips. Others
purchase jewelry from Sunset Beach Gifts —
there’s a pretty choker that’s like a Cape May
version of puka shells.
The hunt is part of the magic, and it’s a
great activity for rainy days. Though quartz
is one of the world’s most common minerals,
it can be a challenge to spot the diamonds
among other beach pebbles. You’re likely to
have the most luck at Sunset Beach after a
storm, and preferably not at sunset, when that
beach is crowded. Bring a sand sifter from the
toy box or a mesh strainer from the kitchen.
Scoop down past the top crust of sand to look
for the bits of translucent stone. You won’t
always find them — they blend with the other
stones on the beach. (Some genius parents
allegedly purchase a small bag of diamonds
to seed the beach, but I will deny this if challenged.)
They look like jellybean-shaped sea
glass with a frosted surface. Every stone gains
some shine with a good cleaning with mild
soap, but if you’re looking for real sparkle, try
a rock tumbler — even toy versions work well.
Then, display your diamonds as you see fit.

quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My four-year-old son is a product of a
friend who agreed to be the father but only for
the purposes of conceiving. He wants nothing
to do with my son’s upbringing. I don’t need
child support, luckily, so I agreed to that. Now
that my son is getting older, I’m thinking about
school and the future. I think the time will
come when my son has a right to know who his
father is. At the same time, I fear alienating my
wonderful friend. Every time I see him, I am
reminded of why I chose him to be the father
of my child. Afterall, I would not have a son
without him. Am I making too much of this?
What would you do? – Troubled Parent
Dear Troubled
The best thing for now is to include him in
as many family gatherings as possible where
your son will be present. If he suspects you of
imposing your son on him, he’ll say so. On the
other hand, he might come round. It’s worth a
try. The Nature Center of Cape May is a perfect
place for a gathering. Until your friend is ready
to “come out,” your best approach to your son,
once he does start asking questions, is to tell
him the truth — that his father is someone who
truly wanted to help his mother have a child.
Dear Answer Lady
My wedding is next month and my mother,
who does not like my fiancé, is planning on
wearing white to the wedding. I don’t know
much about fashion, but I know that is not
something that is acceptable. My question
is, can I stop her? She’s a bit of a narcissist
anyway and I doubt she would have approved
of anyone I marry, but my fiancé has been onto
her from the get-go. I know it’s going to be
a war forever. For now, though, I’m worried
about the dress. — Worried Groom
Dear Worried
No one can upstage the bride. She is the
star of the show. Anyone who does make such
a futile attempt, will look old and foolish and
mean spirited. You might want to think about
distancing yourself from your mother for the
first year of marriage to give you and your bride
time to settle in. Meanwhile, act as though you
know nothing about her intentions and offer to
take her on a shopping spree. Lead her over to
Victorious and even Free Love, the bridal shop.
It might not work, but it’s worth the effort.

SADIE is a young, 56-pound girl who was
brought to the shelter as a stray. She loves to
be with people and tends to think she is still a
lap dog. Sadie enjoys playing in the yard and
her leash skills are improving. She will need
a slow introduction to cats and other dogs.
Sadie will make a great companion for an
active family that will continue her training.
GEM is a senior girl who came to the shelter
when she was abandoned. She is a loving dog
who loves human interaction. Gem has excellent
leash manners, loves long walks and playing
in the yard. She is calm around other dogs
and needs a slow introduction to cats. Gem is
also good with children and would make an
ideal pet for a family that will love her energy.
ROLLO is an exuberant one-and-a-halfyear-old
boy who came to the shelter as a
stray. He is very smart and quickly learning
new behavior cues. Rollo loves long walks,
and his leash skills are improving. He will
need a slow introduction to other dogs and
cats but will make a great pet for an active
family who is willing to continue his training.

FURNANDO is an eight-year-old boy who
was a stray in Wildwood before coming to
the shelter. He is an independent cat and will
make a very loyal pet. Furnando would be
good in a home with children but prefers a
home without other cats. He is up to date on
all vaccinations and neutered. If interested in
adopting this sweet boy, contact the shelter.
INDIGO was abandoned in a cat carrier and
left at the shelter door with no information.
After time spent at the shelter, Indigo has
gotten a lot better with people. He loves to
play and get attention, but he will sometimes
get overstimulated and swat. Indigo prefers a
home without children and only experienced
cat owners should meet this guy!
BOB is a 10-year-old boy who is on the bigboned
size weighing in at 16 pounds. He is
affectionate and easy going. Bob gets along
with other cats, dogs and children making him
an excellent candidate to blend into your family.
