HERE COME THE KITTENSKITTEN SHOWER 2022Every year, from spring through late summer, AHS is inundated with teeny, tinykittens. It’s Kitten Season, and over the next few months we will welcome hundredsof newborn kittens into our shelter. These babies require constant care and support,and they are the most fragile animals we serve. Our shelter staff members anddedicated foster caregivers are working around the clock to make sure these kittensgrow big and strong.To help raise funds for all of those babies, we’ll be hosting our 8th Annual KittenShower, presented by Heritage Ranch by H-E-B and the Nicholas J. Juried FamilyFoundation, on May 14th! This is a kitten-themed, family-friendly communityevent featuring adorable kittens and cats, kitten yoga, children’s activities, a bakeoffcompetition, kitten supply donation drive, and paw-some local vendors. CELEBRATING 75,000COMMUNITY CAT Q&AIn 2022, our Community Cat Program is celebrating its 15th anniversary, and in March,our team served its 75,000th cat! Prevention is a staple of the Austin Humane Society’smission, but many people still aren’t aware of this unique program. As we enter the heightof Kitten Season, we sat down with Community Support Program Supervisor AshleySteffey to learn more about the Community Cat Program at AHS.What is the Community Cat Program?The community cat program provides spay and neuter services to free-roaming, stray, orcommunity cats living in Travis County. Our program has spay/neuter appointments available tomembers of the public who are interested in helping community cats in their neighborhood withtrap-neuter-return (TNR). We also partner with the Austin Animal Center to provide volunteertrapping assistance to folks unable to trap cats themselves. All cats that come through our programarrive in humane traps that are available to rent here at AHS. The cost is $20 per cat and each catreceives spay/neuter surgery, a rabies vaccination, a dose of flea prevention, and an ear-tip. Thanksto the generosity of Karen Pospisil and Roger Beasley, AHS also offers a limited program forcommunities outside of Travis County.Ashley Steffey,Community Support Program SupervisorWhy is it such an important part of the Austin Humane Society’s mission?There are many reasons this program is such an important part of AHS, and it starts withprevention! Our program prevents hundreds of kittens from being born on the streets and cominginto the shelter system every year. I have seen first-hand how this program improves the lives ofcommunity cats and the people who care for them. For most of these cats, this is their one chanceto receive veterinary care. After the trap-neuter-return process is completed, these cats arereturned to their outdoor homes. They are free to live their lives without having multiple litters ofkittens every year or fighting for mates.What should people do if they see a Community Cat in their neighborhood?The first thing you should do is look to see if the cat has an ear-tip – a flat clip on the left ear. Thisis the universal indicator that this cat has already been spay/neutered and vaccinated. If the cat’sear is not clipped, you can ask neighbors in-person or via apps like Nextdoor if the cat(s) is ownedor stray. If the cats are not owned and not ear-tipped, they can be brought into our spay/neuter/return clinics. Our clinics are offered every Tuesday and Thursday. Helpful clinic information andappointments are available on our website at austinhumanesociety.orgKitten Season is upon us - what should people do if they see kittens in their neighborhood?First, try to estimate the kitten’s age (there are great resources available online to help you do this).Kittens under 6-8 weeks have the best chance of survival if they are with their mother. It is great tomonitor the kittens, but leave them where they are unless they are in danger. Most often when yousee kittens, mom is nearby hunting for food or hiding from people. Give her plenty of space andtime to return. If she does not return all day or overnight, the kittens may have been abandoned. Ifthe kittens are sick or in danger call 311 for assistance.
