Reassurance sought
over historical land
• By Mick Jensen
A COMMUNITY group is
seeking a reassurance that land
with significant historical value
will be excluded from an area
proposed for a new council
wastewater irrigation project at
Robinsons Bay.
THe land includes the site of
Canterbury’s first water-powered
sawmill and a restored 19thcentury
cottage.
board’s support in ensuring the
protection and separation of the
sawmill site from the proposed
THe city council had not yet
formed a strategy to safeguard
the historic area and planned
to submit a resource consent
application without doing so, he
said.
Pavilion will recognise war veterans
A TRADITIONAL Korean roofed
pavilion to be installed in the Songpagu
Garden at Halswell Quarry Park
will commemorate Canterbury
veterans of the Korean War.
The pavilion (jeongja) is being
shipped from Busan in Korea and on
arrival at Lyttelton Port will be assembled
at the quarry park and placed
on the western side of the garden. The
installation is planned to be completed
by June.
It will join existing monuments including
a memorial bridge commemorating
the Korean War and traditional
Korean totem poles – a symbol of
friendship between Christchurch and
its sister city Songpa-gu.
The Canterbury Korean War
Veterans’ Pavilion will have plaques
naming each veteran located under the
overhang of the roof.
More than 6000 New Zealanders
served in Korea between 1950-57.
Forty five men lost their lives during
this engagement.
“The jeongja honours the Korean
War Veterans in Canterbury and their
Treasures from the past
sacrifices made during the Korean
War,” says Korean Society of Christchurch
president and member of the
Christchurch-Songpa-gu Sister City
Committee, Mary Yoon.
“We also commemorate the 60th
diplomatic relations anniversary
between New Zealand and South
Korea and hope to further strengthen
the relationship for many years to
come.”
Songpa-gu Garden is maintained
by members of the committee and the
wider Korean community.
Corsair Bay popular with bathers
The quiet, sheltered beach in Lyttelton Harbour has been attracting
Green light for new Akaroa wharf design
• By Mick Jensen
Lianne
Dalziel
A CONCEPT design to replace
the 134-year-old Akaroa Wharf
has been approved by the city
council.
It will see the wharf rebuilt
in the same position and at
the same length as the existing
wharf, using a mix of timber
decking and concrete piles.
Demolition of the existing
structure and construction of the
new wharf is expected to start
in 2024 with a target completion
date of June 30, 2025.
Mayor Lianne
Dalziel said it
was wonderful
to have a plan
approved and for
the next stages
of work to get underway.
“Community
and stakeholder
input into the
concept design has been extensive
and valuable and the end
result is a structure that retains
the iconic setting, look and feel
of the existing wharf.
“The wharf is an integral part
of the coastal landscape and
identity of Akaroa township
and retaining that has been
uppermost in people’s minds
as this concept design has been
developed,’’ she said.
CONCEPT: Akaroa Wharf will be rebuilt in the same position and at the same length as the existing wharf.
Black Cat Cruises chief executive
Paul Milligan said he was
happy progress was being made
with the project.
He said there was ‘‘still a lot
of water to go under the bridge’’
and more clarity was needed.
‘‘As a building owner and vessel
operator at the wharf we want
more certainty as to how we can
continue to operate.
‘‘Council has floated some
ideas and we’ll need to work
through those options over the
coming months.’’
Milligan said he had always
supported the proposal to build
the wharf at the same location
and with the same footprint.
‘‘We expect the reality of
operating our business over the
next few years will mean shortterm
pain for long-term gain,’’
he said.
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board
chair Tori Peden welcomed the
approval of the concept designs.
The project was moving
forward and following the
tendering process. The detailed
design phase would follow.
The city council needed to
continue to look at the best
ways to work with businesses
on temporary access during
the construction period and to
minimise disruption for them.
Peden said alternative wharf
options were being looked into
for boat access.
The city council will continue
to work closely with Ōnuku
Rūnanga and Heritage New
Zealand to integrate the story
of the wharf and its location
into the expression of the new
structure.
Call for area to
have reserve status
• From page 1
Robinson said ultimately
the city council had undertaken
the large wastewater project to
right a wrong and to remove
the old treatment plant from
another highly significant
cultural site.
“We feel that by not ensuring
the protection of another of
the community’s culture and
heritage assets, council are now
causing another offence.’’
THe association
commissioned its own
archaeological report
which shows medium
to high historical values
of the site. It wants to
keep the surface features
visible and preserve above
ground structures.
As well as the cottage,
there is an historic tramway and
pond at the site.
“The latest information we
have is that council staff are
still awaiting various technical
reports and only then will
they decide if the heritage area
around the cottage can be
excluded from the scheme.
“THey are hesitant to release
any of the land until after
resource consent and conditions
have been finalised,’’ Robinsons
Bay Residents and Ratepayers
Association member Sue
Church said.
“THere is some urgency to
this and we want a commitment
that the land will be protected
regardless of the needs of the
wastewater scheme,’’ she said.
THe group want a 4.8ha area
excluded from the wastewater
project, which would result in an
area of 1.3ha lost to wastewater
irrigation.
THey would also like to see the
city council set up the
site as a reserve, which
the community will
look after.
THe original mill
cottage was sold
off in 2000 when
the farmland was
Sue Church subdivided and
purchased by the
Pavitt family, who have fully
restored it. It is listed in the
district plan.
THe residents’ association is
also keen to arrange a workshop
to present further commercially
sensitive opportunities involving
Pavitt cottage to the community
board.
THe board expects to
receive a city council staff
update on the Robinsons Bay
wastewater irrigation plans
soon.
Proposed speed limits
under discussion
• By Mick Jensen
NEW recommended lower
speed limits for some side roads
adjoining State Highway 75 on
Banks Peninsula and in some
rural townships have been
considered by the Te Pātaka o
Rākaihautū-Banks Peninsula
Community Board, including
a stretch of road near
Little River where the
speed is set to go from
50km/h to 80km/h and
then to 60km/h in the
space of just 1km.
At a meeting on
Monday community
board chair Tori Peden
asked James Caygill
from Waka Kotahi
NZ Transport Agency
the justification in keeping
the section from Cooptown
to the Wairewa Pa at
80km/h.
THe 80km/h stretch was an
issue for locals who couldn’t
understand it and were upset by
it, she said.
Caygill said Waka Kotahi
was bound by the rules and the
stretch of road did not meet
technical criteria to lower the
speed.
Tori Peden
THat section was classed as
a standard rural road
and unless there were
more houses, access points or
a change in the road design,
there was no justification to
change it.
THe proposed 60km/h on
the state highway through
Takamatua was another
road speed questioned by
Peden.
Caygill said it was
a long stretch of clear
road, but had side road
connections.
Peden asked if double
yellow lines could be put
in down the middle of the
road to stop overtaking.
She was told it would be
investigated.
THe speed limit review has
been undertaken by the city
council and Waka Kotahi and
lowered speeds will mainly
affect low volume rural roads
and those in small townships
including Takamatua,
Motukarara and Robinsons
Bay.
THe speed limit changes will
take place in late July/early
August.
Project to support youth soon to be under way
• By Mick Jensen
A NEW community project
that provides support to youth
in the Diamond Harbour area is
set to be launched.
THe project will employ a
worker from 24-7 Youth Work
to connect and inspire young
people and to give them a sense
of community.
TWO NEW signalised crossings on
Humphrey’s Drive will provide safe
crossing points for people using the
Rapanui-Shag Rock cycleway.
Construction work began last
week and is expected to take
between five and seven months to
complete. Accompanying works
will also take place to widen ‘pinch
points’ on Humphrey’s Drive and
upgrade Tidal View.
The crossing points will connect
the Charlesworth Reserve section
of the cycleway to the Ferrymead
Bridge-Redcliffs section of the
coastal pathway.
One will be placed near Windsurfer
Reserve and one near the
intersection of Humphrey’s Drive
and Tidal View.
“These signalised crossing will
provide cyclists with a safe connection
point across what is a very
busy road. We’ll also be replacing
It is being run as a
partnership between
Diamond Harbour Youth And
Community Trust, Diamond
Harbour School and Harbour
House Church.
Community trust chair
Matt Swaney said it was an
exciting opportunity for youth
in the area and only been
made possible because of the
the failing seawall along the front
of Tidal View and implementing a
new streetscape plan for this area,”
city council head of transport Lynette
Ellis said.
“New picnic tables, cycle parking,
water drinking fountain and
an outdoor shower will make it
an amenable space for a picnic, for
windsurfers and foilers accessing
the estuary or to use it as a starting
point for a trip along the coastal
pathway.”
Vehicle speeds will be reduced to
30km/h along Tidal View.
The cycleway connects Sumner
via the pathway to the central city,
passing through Linwood. It has
one final section through Moncks
Bay still to be completed as part of
the pathway.
That work is currently under
way and expected to be finished in
2023.
partnership.
THe school and church
would contribute half of the
costs of employing a youth
worker for 20 hours per week
and the trust would fund the
rest.
He said the youth worker
would spend 10 hours per week
at the school and would focus
primarily on working with the
older students in years 6-8.
Other projects would work
with youth up to the age of
18, who travelled away to
high school and often found
themselves disconnected from
their community.
‘‘It’s about working with
youth and providing them
with a voice and ownership
in the community,’’ Swaney
said.
He said the wider
Diamond Harbour area had
around 200 people under
the age of 18 and there were
opportunities to support them
better.
Dogs in Early New Zealand Photographs
Introduction by Mike White
Adorable and sometimes surprising historic images of dogs and their owners
This entertaining selection of over 100 photos of New Zealand dogs reveals some of the
more curious ways in which they have appeared in photographic collections from the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Dogs named Terror, Betsey Jane, Floss and Erebus appear alongside canines whose
names are longer known. The photos range from carefully staged studio portraits to New
Zealand landscapes.
The photographs take the reader across the towns and landscapes of Aotearoa New
Zealand, and the text profiles many of the photographers and studios that flourished prior
to the First World War. A charming mix of history and whimsy, this beautiful book makes
the perfect gift for any dog lover.
Yum - Nadia Lim
YUM! is for anyone who wants to feed the family nutritious, delicious food.
One of the best feelings you can have as a parent is when your child gobbles up a meal
you’ve cooked for them, especially when you know it’s chockfull of good stuff. But any
parent knows that this doesn’t happen every time. Getting your child to love food (and
I mean, good wholesome food) is not always easy. That’s where I hope YUM! comes
in handy. With over 100 parent- and child-tested recipes, and practical, down-to-earth
tips and discussions about starting solids, fussy eating, food allergies and more, it will
become the go-to for families.
Freezing Order
a true story of russian Money laundering, state-sponsored
Murder, and surviving vladimir Putin’s Wrath by Bill Browder
When Bill Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a
Moscow jail, Browder made it his life’s mission to go after his killers and make sure they
faced justice. The first step of that mission was to uncover who was behind the $230
million tax refund scheme that Magnitsky was killed over. As Browder and his team
tracked the money as it flowed out of Russia through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to
Western Europe and the Americas, they were shocked to discovered that Vladimir Putin
himself was a beneficiary of the crime.
As law enforcement agencies began freezing the money, Putin retaliated. At once a
financial caper, an international adventure and a passionate plea for justice, Freezing
Order is a timely and stirring morality tale about how one man can take on one of the
most ruthless villains in the world.
Cracking Open the Nest Egg
How to make your retirement savings last the distance
by Martin Hawes
Planning for retirement can be a scary thought, whether it is just around the corner or
years in the future. Martin Hawes, one of New Zealand’s best-known experts on personal
finance, answers all of the questions that may be keeping you up at night: How much will
I need to retire? Can I ever afford to stop working? How do I make sure my money lasts
as long as I do? Working out how you can achieve a regular monthly retirement income
is more difficult than it used to be. Historically low interest rates (despite the current blip)
plus longer life expectancy means the old method of parking your nest egg in a savings
account and living off the interest is no longer an option. Hawes guides you step-by-step
through the planning process, showing you how you can safely create a regular income
for the rest of your life.
Ideals Are Like Stars
the dame yvette Williams story By angela Walker
The first New Zealand woman to win an Olympic gold medal, a feat not repeated for forty
years. Ideals Are Like Stars is the remarkable true story of Yvette Williams, a trailblazing
young athlete who defied the odds to win gold in the long jump at the Helsinki Olympics
in 1952. Ignoring the pressure to abandon her dreams and become a housewife, Yvette’s
sports career is a highlight reel of newly set records which propelled her into the spotlight.
Well-known for her rigorous training, down-to-earth nature and sense of humour, Yvette
was the epitome of the Kiwi sporting hero - humble, hardworking and dedicated - who
won the hearts of the nation. This is a long overdue celebration of an extraordinary
sporting life and a highly engaging chronicle of a young woman’s quest for excellence.
Drone racing skills for Shrimpy Boy
• By John Cosgrove
HE MAY be called Shrimpy
Boy – but his field of expertise
is far removed from eating
crustaceans.
Instead Jayden Jackson races
drones at speeds of up to 180-
190km/h, which requires him
to memorise racing circuits and
learn how to navigate them in
the shortest time. To do this he
possesses excellent hand-eye coordination.
The drone racing pilot is the
first New Zealander to be invited
to join the Drone Champions
League in Europe.
The 25-year-old builder from
Lincoln is the latest addition to
the SDT Euroflytec drone racing
team, based in Spain.
His dream of racing
‘first person view’ drones
internationally has come to
fruition.
He said it all came as a bit of a
shock when his name was posted
on the team list.
“Somehow, my name came
up first in the draft – it blew me
away and I couldn’t believe it,”
Jackson said.
“The British team said they
would like to talk to me but the
Spanish team called first.”
The champions drone league is
one of the fastest-growing team
sports in the world.
Currently six teams representing
China, Japan, United States,
United Kingdom, Spain,
and Korea compete with 12
international players each.
All the drone racers attempt
to qualify for the final with
only one hour of practice on
purpose-built tracks that vary in
complexity from race to race.
The four fastest from each
team wins the chance to race in
the final grand prix event.
“So the competition is crazy
for those slots,” Jackson said.
“It will be like this throughout
the whole year, just like a
formula one qualifying session.”
To find the best of the best
worldwide, aspiring drone FPV
racers compete on the league’s
drone racing simulator online,
trying to earn the fastest time on
the circuits offered – all within
a strict seven-day window of
competition.
Jackson said anyone, anywhere
has the chance to compete.
“But first you have to make
it into the top 300 worldwide.
That’s made up of the top 200
pilots from the pc steam gaming
software and the top 100 of
those playing on Xboxes and
PlayStations.
“You race again and then the
final 100 pilots selected have
five attempts during a 24-hour
window of opportunity to be
the fastest around the track.
From those results the draft
comprising of the top players are
selected.”
Before Covid-19 forced the
hybrid indoor/outdoor sport
to go online, competitors only
used the game to qualify for each
actual race, now this form of
hybrid racing is used for the real
grand prix too.
“It’s an awesome prospect
and it has been my dream since
I started in the sport two years
ago,” Jackson said.
The physical racing drones are
custom-built and made purely
for racing. They can’t be bought
off the shelf.
Each drone is hand-made by
the teams using cutting edge
technology, electronics and
software.
“The drones are one of a kind.
They’re custom-built and very
fast, full of titanium and carbon
fibre. It’s all the computing in
them, they’re a different kettle
of fish to the DJI’s most people
think of when you say you fly a
drone.”
“It’s either get it right or you
there are no second chances,”
Jackson said.
Like the car racing world,
Jackson said drone racing is all
about the amount of time spent
practicing and ensuring your
hand and eye co-ordination is
fast enough for the speeds raced
at. He spends as much time as
“Races are timed and won by
the smallest of margins – 100th of
The actual drone races are held
on circuits that vary in length
and force the pilots to corner at
high speeds, dipping down under
barriers or flying through gates.
Winter camping
permitted at
Lakeside Domain
• By Susan Sandys
RESIDENTS around Lakeside
Domain have been successful in
their fight to have the domain’s
campground remain open over
winter.
While overnight camping is
closed at Chamberlains Ford,
Coes Ford and Whitecliffs Domain
from April 29 to October
21, as it has been in previous
years, the district council has
relented on Lakeside Domain,
located on the banks of Te Waihora
Lake Ellesmere.
District council group manager
property Douglas Marshall
said the district council recently
updated its camping and reserves
policy, with the winter
closure rules.
However, closing the camping
areas at Lakeside Domain would
have required closing the main
gates.
“The community raised the
valid point that this restricts
access for other activities on the
reserve,” Marshall said.
Marshall met with a group of
residents from the surrounding
area on site, on two occasions.
PHOTO: LAWA
“These were productive meetings,
and we agreed to the gates
would remain open to allow
access.”
Campers will be allowed a
maximum 28-day stay at the
grounds, as applies during the
rest of the year.
The changes to the policy
had been undertaken to help
comply with Reserve Act
requirements of no permanent
stays on recreational reserves,
as well as to reflect that the
majority of recreational reserves
were already closed over
winter anyway, due to ground
conditions. Additionally, winter
was the perfect time for the
district council to undertake
maintenance, when few
recreational campers visited.
Treasures from the past:
NEWS 11
The Corsair Bay Bathers
ACCORDING TO certain
ancient narratives of Aotearoa,
Mahuika, the goddess of fire,
threw her last spark into the
form of the kaikōmako tree to
keep it safe from her grandson
Maui’s deceits.
And three centuries ago
the great Ngāi Tahu leader Te
Rakiwhakaputa, on passing
through what many now call
Corsair Bay, gave it the name
Motu-kauati-iti, the little firemaking
tree grove, owing to the
treasured kaikōmako trees there
that early Māori used to reignite
Mahuika’s fire.
In the years following the Canterbury
Association’s purchase
of the Canterbury Plains outside
Whakaraupō, Motu-kauati-iti
acquired the Pākehā name of
Corsair Bay. On April 23, 1861,
a strong south-wester caused the
steamship Omeo to drag her anchor
chain off Naval Point, tangling
with Captain Thomas Gay’s
whaling brigantine, which was
set adrift in the gale. The sailing
ship was wrecked on the rocks in
the small sandy bay around the
corner, and this corsair gave its
name to that place.
The quiet, sheltered and rather
beautiful swimming beach has
been popular with locals from at
least the 1880s on, with Christ’s
College and Christchurch Boys’
High School swimming sports
being held there from 1886.
The bay’s popularity as a
swimming destination increased
markedly in the early 1900s after
the Dampier and Sandy bays in
Lyttelton were incorporated into
the fast developing port. And
in 1905, the Lyttelton Borough
Council passed a bill in the
Parliament to gazette the Corsair
Bay Recreation Reserve ‘as a
pleasure resort for the public of
Canterbury’.
This pleasure resort rapidly
took form in the following two
years, 1906-7, as 24 prisoners
from the Lyttelton Gaol ‘hard
labour gang’ were put to work
clearing rocks, building the sea
wall, and forging the promenade
walk around to the Lyttelton Domain.
A jetty was built, followed
by a playground, pavilions, and a
women’s bathing enclosure with
accompanying, ladies’ dressing
sheds and steps down to the
bath.
Apparently the enclosure kept
the sharks at bay, attracted as
they were by the Cass Bay abattoir
that discharged its bloody
offal directly into the harbour
waters.
Following complaints regarding
certain rowdy young men
making use of the ladies’ baths,
indecently clothed and of rather
course manners and tongue, the
Lyttelton Borough Councillors
promptly passed a 1908 bylaw to
enforce ‘the decent and orderly
control of Corsair Bay as a pleasure
resort’.
A men’s dressing shed and diving
platform was subsequently
built on the opposite, eastern
side of the bay, the piles of which
can still be seen today as one
walks down the path towards the
beach.
These developments transformed
Corsair Bay into
Canterbury’s premier beachside
playground through the 1910s
into the 20s and 30s. Crowds
would flock into Lyttelton on a
summer’s Sunday via the train,
and then promenade in their
finest wear around the coastline
walkway, or climb aboard an
alarmingly overcrowded ferry.
By 1921, the crowds were
becoming excessive with
reportedly up to 2500 people
cramming onto the beach and in
the water.
The Corsair Bay beachside
pleasure resort remained a popular
Canterbury summer destination
for generations of Cantabrians
through into the 1960s,
after which, the big crowds faded
and the facilities slowly degraded
back into the sea.
Nowadays, only the seawall,
a raft and one jetty remain, but
far from being a mere shadow of
its former heyday, today’s Motukauati-iti
Corsair Bay remains
a secluded and very pleasant
swimming beach of a summer’s
day in Whakaraupō.
18 Bay Harbour News Wednesday May 18 2022
Fuel-friendly Fiat 500 sure to appeal
MUCH OF THE talk around
motor vehicles in the last couple
of months has centered around
fuel use.
With petrol (and diesel) prices
up and down like a yo-yo, the
cost of filling up a tank is on
almost every car owner’s mind.
That’s where small, fuel-efficient
cars come in, those that
have small engines and have
technology that maximises every
drop are being snapped up almost
as quickly as they arrive in the
country.
One company offering good
supply is Fiat, and it has a new
500 landing in healthy numbers.
What’s more, it has a low carbon
emission engine that means a
buyer will be eligible for a $2180
rebate through the clean car
discount scheme, a Government
initiative to lower greenhouse
gases.
Long gone are the days when
the 500 was named Bambina
here, its rear engine layout was
advanced for its time and quickly
won favour with a good part of
the population.
Today’s Fiat 500 is vastly different;
sure it’s shape is extremely
retrospective, but the engine sits
up front (transversely), and with
four-cylinders it has double the
number as the original, it also has
an engine of 1.2-litre against 479cc.
RETROSPECTIVE: A wheel in each corner look for the Fiat 500.
Even though the new Fiat 500
has an engine that would appear
sizeable for a small car, it has
the efficiency that will make it
desirable.
Fiat list the new 500 with a
4.8-litre per 100km combined
cycle average, that’s about as good
as it gets for a non-hybrid model
and that makes it a stunningly
economical car. What’s more, it is
remarkably entertaining to drive.
The 500 is instantly
recognisable, not so much
because of its diminutive stature,
but it has a blunt sloping bonnet
and a wheel in each corner look.
Bear in mind though, the 500 is
only a four-seater and those in
the rear will need to be slight of
build.
The 500 is available here in two
variations at present, high-performance
Abarth models aside.
There’s bound to be more options
arriving as time goes by, but the
choice now is what Fiat name
Lounge and Dolcevita; effectively
it is low and high grade, the test
car was the entry-level model
that sits at $22,990, which by my
reckoning, is good value buying,
the Dolcevita adds $3k. If you
also take into account the little
amount of fuel the 500 uses then
outlay will be paid back over
time.
During my time in the evaluation
car the fuel usage readout
was listing an average of
5.5l/100km which is an excellent
return given the car was almost
brand new (280km) and would
still be tight in the engine. At
100km/h it is sipping fuel at the
rate of just 3.8l/100km.
The interior is also retrospective,
it clings to a design that’s not
dissimilar to the original model
that was built from 1957 to 1977.
However, the newcomer does
have modern elements such as a
central touch screen display and
other fitment that a new car buyer
today would come to expect.
I’ve long been a Fiat owner
and over the years I have complained
more about their seats
and seating positions than any
other car I’ve been involved with.
But things have changed, the 500
has brilliant seats, soft, grippy and
with plenty of under-thigh support.
From the moment you sit in
them you know you are going to
be comfortable.
Under the bonnet sits a 1242cc
engine, it develops just 51kW and
102Nm but both these figures
register just below the traditional
points of the rev band, with
maximum torque available at just
1750rpm meaning the engine
is barely ticking over before it is
pulling at the best part of the rev
band.
Weighing just over 900kg, the
Fiat 500’s engine doesn’t work
hard to gain momentum. Yes, you
do need to give the accelerator
pedal a bit of a nudge at take-off,
• Price – Fiat 500, $22,990
• Dimensions – Length,
3571mm; width, 1627mm;
height, 1488mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1242cc, 51kW,
102Nm, five-speed
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 12.9sec
• Fuel usage – 4.8l/100km
but once the engine becomes lively
speed is ushered in willingly.
Drive is channelled through a
five-speed transmission that Fiat
label Dualogic. Effectively, it is a
manual gearbox with a robotised
clutch but there are only two pedals
so you treat it like a traditional
automatic. One of the benefits is
that you can use it like a manual,
changing up or down simply
by moving the gear lever at any
given point.
With sensible ratios the 500 is
an easy city car, it is relaxing to
drive and battles the rush-hour
traffic without taxing the driver.
Against the clock it will
reach 100kmh from a standstill
in 12.9sec, and it will make
120km/h from 80km/h in around
11sec.
At open road speeds the 500 is
quiet and relaxing to drive, any
external sound is well stifled.
Interestingly, Fiat has persevered
with their dual mode
power steering set-up.
The 500 has a push-button city
FIAT 500:
Available
in two
specifications
starting from
$22,990 with
a $2180
rebate.
mode which lightens steering feel
considerably to take the pressure
of close confine manoeuvring.
Personally, I preferred the more
involving mode, but I do appreciate
for those who have movement
restriction or aren’t as strong in
the wrists as they would like to
be, the system would be of much
benefit.
I took the evaluation car for a
couple of highway excursions,
one of them was to west of
Darfield where its handling dynamics
were well captured.
Sitting on soft spring and
damper rates, the 500 has a plush
and controlled ride that would
have been hard to engineer, given
its short wheelbase. Not only is
it comfortable, but because of its
light weight gravitational transfer
in a corner isn’t significant. It
can be placed into a corner with
reasonable speed and its accuracy
and precision will command
control.
The new 500 lands at a very
opportune time, if its cheeky style
and design doesn’t win friends
then its economy will.
Sure there are disadvantages, it
is compact inside, and for those
who are above average height
and are consigned to the rear will
need to be mindful their heads
will reach the roofline, and space
to spread out there is negligible.
However, if you want a small
car and like the idea of something
retrospective, and Italian, then
Fiat have created a very desirable
package.
has motoring covered!
