unresolved issues, it seems that everyone needs a<br />
courageous and strong attitude like a black tiger.<br />
안녕하세요. 전라북도국제교류센터 이영호<br />
센터장입니다. <strong>2022</strong>년 임인년이 시작 된 지 벌<br />
써 3개월 정도가 지났습니다. 코로나 19 확산세<br />
증가 및 오미크론 변이 출연 등 아직도 해결되<br />
지 못한 숙제가 많은 현 시점에서 검은 호랑이<br />
처럼 용맹하고 강인한 태도가 모두에게 필요한<br />
것처럼 보입니다.<br />
<strong>2022</strong>년 전라북도국제교류센터는 내실을 다<br />
지고 그와 동시에 외연을 확장할 계획입니다.<br />
첫 번째로 내실을 다지겠습니다. 기존에 추<br />
진해왔던 사업들과 협력기관과 추진하는 업무<br />
의 질적 제고를 위해 노력하겠습니다. 특히, 전라<br />
북도와 연해주가 업무협약을 맺은 만큼 연해주<br />
와 문화교류를 통해 도정에 이바지 하겠습니다.<br />
두 번째로 외연확장 입니다. 현재 우리 센터<br />
는 ‘몽골 고비알타이주 농업기술 선진화 및 농<br />
업 생산성 증대를 위한 공무원 역량 강화 사업’<br />
을 금년도부터 추진할 예정이며 이는 전라북도<br />
첫 ODA(Official Development Assistance,<br />
공적 개발 원조)사업이라는 점에서 의의를 갖<br />
습니다. 이를 시작으로 우리 센터는 더 많은 나<br />
라와 더 많은 분야에서 교류하는 대표적 국제교<br />
류 기관으로 성장해 나갈 것입니다.<br />
급변하는 세계정세 속에서 위기는 언제든지<br />
발생하지만 전라북도의 국제적 위상 및 긍정적<br />
이미지 제고를 위해 우리 센터는 열심히 근무할<br />
것입니다. 아울러, 코로나19 바이러스 등으로 힘<br />
든 시기를 보내고 있는 모든 분들이 이를 강인<br />
하게 극복하시고 일상을 회복하시기를 진심으<br />
로 바라겠습니다.<br />
Hello. This is Youngho Lee, the Secretary General of the Jeollabuk-do<br />
Center for International Affairs. It has already<br />
been about three months since the beginning of <strong>2022</strong>. At<br />
this point in time when there are still many unresolved<br />
issues such as the increase in the spread of COVID-19 and<br />
the appearance of mutations in omicron, it seems that everyone<br />
needs a courageous and strong attitude like a black tiger.<br />
In <strong>2022</strong>, the JBCIA plans to strengthen its internal structure and<br />
expand its boundaries at the same time.<br />
First, we will strengthen our stability. We will do our best to<br />
improve the quality of the projects we have been promoting with<br />
our partner organizations. In particular, as Jeollabuk-do and Primorsky<br />
Krai signed a business agreement, we will contribute to the<br />
township through cultural exchanges with them.<br />
Our second goal is extension. Currently, our center is planning<br />
to promote the project to enhance civil servants’ capabilities to<br />
advance agricultural technology and increase agricultural productivity<br />
in Gobi-Altai, Mongolia from this year, and it is meaningful as<br />
Jeollabuk-do’s first Official Development Assistance (ODA) project.<br />
Starting with this, our center will grow into a representative international<br />
exchange organization that exchanges in more countries<br />
and in more fields.<br />
In the rapidly changing world situation, crises can occur at any<br />
time, but our center will work hard to improve Jeollabuk-do’s international<br />
status and positive image. In addition, I sincerely hope that<br />
all those who are going through a difficult time because of COVID-19<br />
will overcome this and recover their daily life.<br />

From the Designer<br />
This new year brings a<br />
few changes to Jeonbuk<br />
Life magazine, and with<br />
new changes, a new<br />
design was in order.<br />
First, rather than printing every season, we are<br />
now printing only three times per year. So going<br />
forward, we will use volume numbers by year.<br />
Second, additional translation languages will be<br />
provided in the future - beyond Korean, Chinese,<br />
and Vietnamese. Therefore an entirely new font<br />
family was needed in order to accomodate the<br />
new languages. For the redesign, I’ve selected<br />
Google’s Noto font due to its versatility. The font<br />
was designed for over 1,000 languages and 150<br />
writing systems, and will therefore be the most<br />
“future proof” for additional languages.<br />
Finally, inspiration for the new layout comes<br />
from Time magazine, Dream Escape magazine<br />
(a luxury travel magazine in the UK), and the<br />
2018 redesign of National Geographic magazine,<br />
which won the National Magazine Award for<br />
Design in 2021.<br />
I hope you enjoy reading the new magazine as<br />
much as I enjoyed creating it!<br />

language school operation business<br />
The purpose of this project is to<br />
enhance the image of Jeollabuk-do<br />
and increase the influx of foreign students<br />
by revitalizing Korean language<br />
education by supporting the operation<br />
of Saemangeum Korean Language<br />
School in Vietnam, Laos, Russia, and<br />

programs in various fields, and<br />
form a friendly image of Jeollabuk-do<br />
by operating sustainable partnerships<br />
with sister friendly regions of Jeollabuk-do.<br />
• Operate private exchange events<br />
with sister friendly regions such as<br />
the United States, China, Japan, and<br />
Russia.<br />
• Conduct exchanges with private<br />
organizations in various fields such<br />
as culture and traditional experience.<br />
2 Jeollabuk-do Public Diplomacy Project<br />
We discover the networks of organizations<br />
wishing to exchange international exchanges<br />
in the province and support that they<br />
strengthen their capabilities, to promote<br />
public diplomacy in Jeollabuk-do.<br />
• Operate the Jeollabuk-do Public Diplomacy<br />
Corps to provide basic literacy education and<br />
opportunities to participate in interpretation<br />
and translation activities in preparation for<br />
international competitions such as the 2023<br />
Asia-Pacific Masters Games and the 2023<br />
Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree.<br />
• Promote public diplomacy in Jeollabuk-do<br />
through the selection of private organizations<br />
wishing for international exchange and customized<br />
consulting support.<br />
3 Jeollabuk-do theme tour<br />
The purpose of this tour is to promote<br />
the charm of Jeollabuk-do<br />
by inviting domestic and foreign<br />
opinion leaders to Jeollabuk-do<br />
and visiting various attractions<br />
in 14 cities and counties.<br />
• Introduce various attractions in<br />
Jeollabuk-do for opinion leaders in<br />
related fields such as foreign missions<br />
in Korea and international<br />
experts<br />
• Promote the charm of Jeollabuk-do<br />
by inviting SNS influencers<br />
and support them for FIT (Free<br />
Independent Traveler, individual<br />

The purpose of this project is to promote the development and mutual<br />
exchange and cooperation programs with developing countries and expand<br />
our contribution to the international community in Jeollabuk-do through<br />
agriculture and traditional culture, which is the strength of Jeollabuk-do.<br />
• Build ‘Dak Lak Friendship Village’ to support the economic and social<br />
development of Dak Lak Province, Vietnam, a friendly exchange area with<br />
Jeollabuk-do<br />
• Discover and commercialize of new Jeollabuk-do development cooperation<br />
projects<br />
• Hold an Official Development Assistance (ODA) forum for university students<br />
to raise awareness in the field of development cooperation<br />
2 Overseas emerging exchange<br />

the scope of exchanges in Jeollabuk-do<br />

from the perspective of foreigners<br />

2 Jeonbuk-friendly foreigner support project<br />

foreigner clubs by hobbies and interests<br />
• Host the event ‘Harmonious Courtyard for Foreign Workers’ that raises a<br />
positive perception of Jeonbuk by holding local community events for foreign<br />

• Host a video content related to Jeollabuk-do contest for foreigners residing<br />
in Korea, in order to build a positive Jeollabuk-do image.<br />
• Operate Technical Education Program for Foreigners to support foreign<br />

THE JEONGEUPCHEON Cherry<br />
Blossom Road creates a spectacular<br />
sight in spring from Sangdong<br />
to Yeonjidong along the Jeongeup<br />
River. The local government usually<br />
holds a variety of programs that both<br />
citizens and tourists can enjoy. You can<br />
enjoy the beauty of cherry trees by day<br />
or night as the government installed night<br />
lights along the road that change into different<br />
colors to show off the beauty of the<br />
cherry blossoms.<br />
You can also see more cherry blossoms<br />
around the Naejang Mountain<br />
Reservoir and the Cherry Blossom tunnel<br />
on the way from the Maple Ecological<br />
Park to Naejang Mountain. These are<br />
considered some of Jeongeup’s hotspots<br />
that you definitely shouldn’t miss out on.<br />

Hoa anh đào nở rộ<br />
Vào mùa xuân, dọc theo dòng suối Jeongeupcheon,<br />
hoa anh đào nở rộ từ khu vực ga<br />
Sangdong đến Yeonji-dong ở Jeongeup là con<br />
đường đi tản bộ rất đẹp và ngoạn mục. Thành<br />
phố Jeongeup đang chuẩn bị nhiều chương<br />
trình khác nhau cho người dân và khách du<br />
lịch đến thưởng thức. Bạn có thể thưởng thức<br />
vẻ đẹp rực rỡ của những bông hoa anh đào<br />

trên con đường dẫn đến Naejangsan.<br />

Jeongeup’s Ssanghwacha Street is<br />
in Jeongeup’s Jangmyeong-dong<br />
on the road leading from the<br />
police station to Jeongeup Tax<br />
Office. There are 13 traditional<br />
tea houses along the road. Nokdukkot<br />
Tea House is one of my favorite tea<br />
houses in Jeongeup. The owners are<br />
very accommodating, and they speak<br />
English too.<br />
Ssanghwatang, also known as<br />
ssanghwacha, is a traditional Korean<br />
tea with a deep brown color and<br />
slightly bitter taste that is made by boiling<br />
down a number of medical herbs.<br />
It was considered an herbal health<br />
tea and consumed in the morning and<br />
at night during the Joseon Dynasty<br />
(1392-1910). Korean teas are enjoyed<br />
not only for their taste but also for<br />
their medicinal properties and health<br />
benefits. They are usually served with<br />
nurungji or roasted karetteok.<br />
My second favorite tea house is<br />
Suwoldam Hanok Cafe Tea House. It<br />
is located near Geumsansa Temple in<br />
Gimje, where you can try a templestay<br />
or enjoy hiking.<br />
Experience and feel the beauty of<br />
hanok while enjoying the amazing<br />
view of the Geumpyeong Reservoir and<br />
rejuvenate with your own traditional<br />
ssanghwacha. There is also a campsite<br />
nearby.<br />
Hyuaen Dadam Hanok Cafe in<br />
Jeonju Innovation City is another<br />
hanok cafe that offers traditional<br />
handmade teas.<br />
정읍 쌍화차 거리<br />
정읍 쌍화차 거리는 정읍 경찰서부터 세무서까<br />
지 이어지는 장면동 거리에 있습니다.<br />
이 거리에는 13개의 전통찻집이 연달아 있는데<br />
그 중 녹두꽃 찻집은 제가 가장 좋아하는 찻집입<br />
니다. 그 찻집의 사장님은 저를 친절하게 맞이해<br />
줄 뿐만 아니라 영어를 사용합니다.<br />
쌍화차로도 알려진 진한 갈색의 약간의 쓴맛을<br />
지닌 쌍화탕은 한국의 전통 차로써 다양한 약초<br />
를 달여서 만들었습니다.<br />
이 차는 조선시대(1392~1910) 아침이나 저녁<br />
에 음용된 약 성분을 지닌 건강을 위한 선조들<br />
의 차입니다. 한국의 차들은 맛을 즐기기 위해<br />
서만 아니라 건강 증진과 치료를 위해 섭취되<br />
어 왔습니다.<br />

井 邑 双 和 茶 街 位 于 从 井 邑 警 察 局 到 税 务 局 连<br />
接 的 长 明 洞 街 上 。 这 条 街 上 连 有 13 家 传 统 茶<br />
馆 , 其 中 绿 豆 花 茶 馆 是 我 最 喜 欢 的 茶 馆 。 那 家<br />
茶 馆 的 老 板 不 仅 亲 切 地 接 待 我 , 而 且 会 说 英<br />
语 。 以 双 和 茶 也 闻 名 的 深 褐 色 略 带 苦 味 的 双<br />
和 汤 是 韩 国 的 传 统 茶 , 用 多 种 草 药 熬 制 而 成 。<br />
这 种 茶 是 朝 鲜 时 代 (1392~1910) 早 上 或 晚 上<br />
饮 用 的 带 有 药 物 成 分 的 先 祖 们 的 茶 。 韩 国 的<br />

This is a nostalgic coming-of-age drama that depicts<br />
the carefree lives of two high school students, Kook<br />
Yeon-su, who is the smartest girl in the school, and<br />
Choi Woong, who is ranked last. They both participate<br />
in an experimental documentary that shows<br />
their daily life in school, and along the way they fall<br />
in love with each other but eventually break up. Fast<br />
forward to the present day, their documentary goes<br />
viral, forcing them to face each other again in a new<br />
docu-series that reveals their unrealized feelings<br />

This local illustrator captures beautiful moments and<br />
architecture in Jeonju one penstroke at a time<br />

It is easy to take things for granted when they<br />
have always been there. And sometimes, it<br />
can be hard to find something special in the<br />
mundane: from places like the neighborhood<br />
supermarket that has been around for 50 years<br />
and the historic church that time and everyone<br />
pass by, to a boy riding his bike every morning or<br />
a couple slowly walking hand in hand.<br />
For Sungmin Park, each stroke of his pen<br />
recreates a scene to immortalize on paper the<br />
beauty of simple moments and places. Each<br />
illustration evokes a sense of nostalgia and quiet<br />
wonder. His works prove that he is a master<br />
of observation, fleshing out the intricacies of<br />
architecture, expressing many emotions, and<br />
opening stories for interpretation with one<br />
drawing. He makes daily life seem extraordinary<br />
with each line, curve, and shade. In this<br />
interview, he shares his thoughts about making<br />
Jeonju one of his main inspirations and the emotional<br />
power of this genre of art.<br />

Hello, I’m Sungmin Park, a local illustrator<br />
who is active in Jeonju, the city with<br />
the most Korean history of 1,000 years.<br />
? Why the name “Sensitive Minute?"<br />
My name Sungmin has the initials S and<br />
M. And my childhood nickname was<br />
“emotional” Min. I was absorbed by<br />
music, scenery, and art that other boys<br />
my age weren’t interested in, so I often<br />
heard that I was emotional. So, I chose<br />
the name Sensitive Minute with love for<br />
the moment when I was sentimental.<br />
? When did you discover your talent<br />
for drawing?<br />
I have always liked drawing since I was<br />
young. When I was four years old, my<br />
mother saw my scribbles of flowers and<br />
butterflies and wanted to develop my<br />
artistic talent. I started studying at an art<br />
academy at the age of 17. I don’t think I’m<br />
talented, but I think I’m a person who<br />
practices and strives a lot.<br />
? Why are so many of your drawings<br />
of historical Jeonju landmarks?<br />
I was born, raised, and live in Jeonju.<br />
Jeonju, a historic city, is the most<br />
Korean city that combines the past, the<br />
future, and the present. I recorded this<br />
wonderful place through my illustrations<br />
with my knowledge and feelings.<br />
I started drawing it in the hope that<br />
many people would come.<br />
? Your store is very popular with tourists<br />
in Jeonju. How do you feel that your<br />
work brings happiness to people?<br />
Thank you for saying that my store<br />
is very popular. All the small picture<br />
postcards I sell are evenly purchased,<br />
and popular works among foreign<br />
travelers are Jeonju Hanok Village<br />
attractions such as Hanok Village<br />
View, Gyeonggijeon Hall,<br />
Omokdae, Jeondong Cathedral,<br />
Jeonju Hyanggyo Local Confucian<br />
School, and Pungnammun Gate.<br />
I am posting pictures of old places in<br />
Jeonju on social media. People who<br />
have seen the pictures remember the<br />
old space and leave comments saying<br />
that they are moved by memories. And<br />
every time I feel rewarded that I am<br />
making people’s hearts warm with my<br />
drawings.<br />
? What message do you want to<br />
deliver with hand drawing?<br />
I know that all places and landscapes<br />
remind people of different images and<br />
feelings. The message of my drawing will<br />
only be felt by the person looking at it.<br />
? This style of illustration is popular<br />
on social media and was recently introduced<br />
in detail in the drama “Our Dear<br />
Summer.” What do you think about this<br />
growing popularity?<br />
This painting is a genre called pen<br />
drawing. The male protagonist, who<br />
became famous for starring in the movie<br />
“Parasite” in Korea, seems to have further<br />
increased its popularity. Thanks to<br />
this, many people seem to have started<br />
paying attention to this art genre, but I<br />
have been drawing works with a pen for<br />
a long time. Many people are surprised<br />
when they see my drawings because the<br />
character in the drama exists in reality.<br />
I think that the recent popularity is the<br />
result of my hard work and effort so far<br />
and I am grateful.<br />

upcoming events.<br />
My store is a small space, so I usually<br />
sell postcards and other artwork.<br />
In the case of art exhibitions, whenever<br />

a Blank Page<br />
KOREAN TRADITIONAL PAPER HANJI<br />
PROVES THAT THE MEDIUM<br />
IS INDEED THE MESSAGE<br />

As I start writing this story, I stare at the blank Microsoft<br />
Word document in front of me, with the blinking<br />
cursor waiting for words to come out from several<br />
taps on the keyboard. In this highly digital world,<br />
it’s so easy to delete words, copy and paste blocks of<br />
text, and most importantly, send the document with just one<br />
simple click. I could only imagine living in the Joseon dynasty,<br />
using hanji, or traditional handmade paper from Korea, along<br />
with a bottle of ink and a pointed brush. How much harder<br />
would it have been to correct a single misspelled word? How<br />
much longer and farther must one piece of paper have been<br />
transported to reach its recipient?<br />
One thing’s for sure: “Hanji has acted as a framework supporting<br />
the establishment of Korean philosophy and spirit<br />
within history, culture, modes of the era, and lifestyles.” This<br />
was the central theme that pervaded the Jeonbuk Museum<br />
of Art’s first special exhibition of <strong>2022</strong> called “Lunar Sonata:<br />
Hanji Works and Contemporary Art.”<br />
Echoing this theme were philosopher Friedrich Hegel’s<br />
words posted on the wall of the exhibit’s entrance: “The spiritual<br />
attitude of contemplating the past has its objective in<br />
integrating history and the present through contemplation,<br />
by thinking about things of the past and mediating them to<br />
life in the present.”<br />

Overcoming the Passage of Time<br />
Hanji is made from the paper mulberry tree and is<br />
produced by traditional methods of sheet formation that<br />
have been passed down from one Korean generation to<br />
the next. The process of creating hanji is an art form,<br />
which compacts fibers and lessens ink bleed. Not only<br />
is hanji known for its durability and ability to stand the<br />
test of time, it is also widely used for its simplistic beauty.<br />
Hanji has been useful as a tool in Korean history in the<br />
production of royal documents, legal texts, historical<br />
records, maps, Buddhist scriptures, and other books. It<br />
has also permeated the daily lives and homes of Koreans,<br />
as it has been used as a material in books, fans, walls,<br />
windows, doors, and other household items.<br />
Along with the ji, pil, muk (paper, brush, and ink) and si,<br />
seo, hwa (poetry, writing, and painting), the exhibit aimed<br />
to “retrace how hanji connects tradition and modernity in<br />
the present.” The different sections of the exhibit showed<br />
hanji in its many diverse art forms: through paintings,<br />
digital art, sculptures, and decorations, among many<br />
others. Hanji, once considered a background, is now in the<br />
foreground. The sections reinforced the “need for a new<br />
approach to hanji, focusing on its potential as a medium<br />
of artistic expression” and “expand its applications to<br />
fields such as architecture, fashion, interior design, video<br />
art, and installation.”<br />

Symbolisms of Hanji<br />
Hanji is more than just a medium for<br />
writing or a background for art. As the<br />
exhibit displayed, ancient texts depict how<br />
Koreans compared the color of mulberry<br />
and hibiscus pulp in the paper-making<br />
process to the color of the moon. Hanji’s<br />
unique off-white color symbolizes purity,<br />
or the worship of white in Korean spirituality.<br />
Other than its conceptual value,<br />
hanji’s simple color enables other colors<br />
to shine more vibrantly, as can be seen in<br />
paintings and sculptures that used it as<br />
their base.<br />

Korea’s culture and its people. Beyond its<br />

A Healing Hobby, a Life-Changing Passion<br />
Lim’s interest in hanji, the Korean traditional art<br />
form of making paper, began after she left a stressful<br />
career for health reasons and got a fateful piece of<br />
advice to learn about hanji as a form of art therapy. She<br />
enjoyed the natural feel of hanji paper and experienced<br />
it as almost a living thing. Lim found that through hanji,<br />
her mental and physical well-being improved tremendously.<br />
As she began to pursue hanji in earnest, she also<br />
discovered that in a society with constant pressure in<br />
everything from earning top grades to getting married<br />
to reaching financial achievements, simply following<br />
one’s passion can be the truest form of success. You<br />
can’t fail as long as you’re doing what you want, she<br />
said. And it turned out<br />
that hanji was exactly<br />
what she wanted.<br />
Indeed, Lim has found<br />
plenty of success following<br />
her love of hanji. In 2019,<br />
she became the first artist<br />
from Iksan to be officially<br />
designated as a national<br />
hanji master. In addition<br />
to offering classes at her<br />
studio, she has also led<br />
hanji activities in many schools and festivals around<br />
Iksan. Lim shared some of her experiences contributing<br />
to hanji projects on the international scale as well,<br />
including hanji interior designs for Korean embassies<br />
in countries like Vietnam and China and for athletes’<br />
dormitories at the Pyeongchang Olympics.<br />
Hanji Traditions and Modern Developments<br />
Interestingly, Lim explained that in her experience,<br />
foreigners are often more interested in<br />
hanji than Koreans. Many Korean people have<br />
a fixed idea of hanji as an old-fashioned craft<br />
used in making expensive art pieces, she said, while<br />
foreigners who are interested in learning about<br />
Jeonju hanji is particularly<br />
famous because<br />
of the abundant and<br />
high-quality daknamu<br />
grown in the region.<br />
Korean culture are more likely to seek out unique<br />
hanji souvenirs or join a hanji experience program<br />
and see the various ways hanji can be used in making<br />
practical and affordable items for everyday use. Lim<br />
said she hopes to break people’s stereotypes about<br />
hanji and see it become more popularized for modern<br />
consumers.<br />
There’s plenty to recommend about products<br />
made from hanji. Hanji is formed from the bark of<br />
paper mulberry trees, or daknamu — Jeonju hanji<br />
is particularly famous because of the abundant and<br />
high-quality daknamu grown in the region. This<br />
makes for extremely<br />
durable paper, as<br />
documents written on<br />
hanji have survived<br />
for centuries. During<br />
our visit, Lim invited us<br />
to hold a 100-year-old<br />
piece of hanji that was<br />
still sturdy and supple<br />
without a single shred.<br />
Hanji is breathable and<br />
can withstand water<br />
exposure, making it<br />
suitable for use in clothes and other wearable accessories.<br />
Lim showed off a colorful bag crocheted from<br />
yarn spun with hanji, an example of putting the traditional<br />
craft to a nontraditional use.<br />
With the growing interest in Korean culture<br />
around the world, Lim hopes to see hanji get more<br />
attention as well, and joked that she would like to tap<br />
BTS as the next hanji ambassadors. In the meantime,<br />
Lim is doing her part to help hanji thrive for the next<br />
generation.<br />

first lessons in hanji art in Hanok Village<br />
and hasn’t looked back since.<br />

for hanji arts and crafts began<br />
back in 2010 when she led her<br />
class in creating a hanji paper<br />
mache craft. She’s always been<br />
fascinated by the colors, patterns,<br />
and designs in hanji, and<br />
admitted she often has trouble<br />
leaving a hanji store without<br />
buying something. In 2011,<br />
when she was visiting Jeonju<br />
Hanok Village, she noticed a<br />
shop that sold such crafts. Inside<br />
she met the woman who would<br />
become eventually become her<br />
mentor in hanji art.<br />

? Can you tell me about your background? What brought<br />
you to Korea? How did you get into Hanji art?<br />
I have lived in Iksan for more than 15 years. I first<br />
arrived in Korea in 2004 and started my teaching career in a<br />
hagwon. I transitioned to public school teaching after a few<br />
years, and I am now an assistant professor at Wonkwang<br />
University. When Korean people ask me where I am from, I<br />
always reply, “I’m from Iksan!” which instantly makes them<br />
chuckle! For real, I consider Iksan my home, and I feel very<br />
lucky to have settled down here.<br />
I started doing hanji art in 2010. I was fortunate to meet a<br />
Korean hanji artist who taught me and showed me the ropes<br />
in the most inspiring way. She gave me both freedom and<br />
guidance to work with the material and let my creativity flow.<br />
After only a few lessons with her, I decided to start doing<br />
hanji art on my own, experimenting and learning through<br />
trial and error; it has been my modus operandi ever since.<br />
Even now, after more than a decade, I am still learning how<br />
to improve and refine my craft. I do not believe the learning<br />
will ever stop, and I am grateful for that!<br />
? Jeonbuk Life did an article on you in a previous issue. Has<br />
anything changed since then? What are you working on now?<br />
A lot of things have changed for me since 2016. Even<br />
though I am still creating small décor items, accessories,<br />
and jewelry that are available in my Etsy online shop, I<br />
progressively moved away from the festival and craft fair<br />
scene here in Korea. The most interesting development for<br />
me is the pursuit of artistic projects. I had the chance to<br />
participate in three collective art exhibitions, one in Iksan<br />
and two in Jeonju. These have been priceless experiences<br />
for me, and most importantly, they gave me the opportunity<br />
to connect with fellow artists of different disciplines and<br />
walks of life. Connecting with other gifted photographers,<br />
painters, poets, and videographers has been wonderful and<br />
inspiring, as it pushed me to challenge myself and explore<br />
new aspects of my craft.<br />
The “Speechless” exhibition, held at the RedBox Gallery<br />
in Jeonju in 2017, was my first occasion to work on<br />
two-dimensioned works. My three artworks were inspired<br />
by foreign words that do not have any literal English translations.<br />
For the “Artists Assemble” exhibition, organized by<br />
the Jeonju Art Museum in the fall of 2020, I was invited to<br />
reflect and express my belongingness to the province of<br />
Jeonbuk. In both those projects, I had the chance to work<br />
alongside incredibly gifted artists from the area and experiment<br />
with different aspects of hanji art.<br />

? Have you faced any particular challenges that you've had<br />
to overcome? Did COVID impact your Hanji art in any way?<br />
The pandemic has impacted all our lives and has forced<br />
us to rethink some of our well-established paradigms. Being<br />
confined at home and not being able to travel abroad somehow<br />
“unlocked” free time I could dedicate to my hanji! In<br />
addition to having more time to allocate to my art, I have<br />
been pushed to connect with other artists and artisans<br />
through social media rather than in person; handmade<br />
markets and art shows where we can mingle have been<br />
replaced with Facebook pages and group chats where we<br />
exchange ideas and insight. It is important for me to be<br />
connected and involved in artistic communities, and COVID<br />
has forced me to rely more on virtual exchanges rather<br />
than in-person ones.<br />
? What is your future outlook for Hanji art? Where do you<br />
suppose it will take you? In Korea? When you leave Korea?<br />
With the increasing curiosity and attention towards<br />
Korean culture, I foresee a renewed interest for hanji art!<br />
Hopefully, an influx of artistic interest will push hanji<br />
art into new territories. While I sincerely hope that the<br />
precious traditions of hanji art remain protected and cherished,<br />
I believe that there is room for new insights and<br />
inspirations coming from different artists who can bring a<br />
fresh perspective to this millennial form of art.<br />
As for me personally, hanji has been such a significant<br />
part of my life that I know for sure that it will always remain<br />
at the heart of my creative work. My art is fueled by the<br />
material itself; its textures, colors, softness, and incredible<br />
strength never cease to amaze me. I am eager to work on<br />
new projects that could possibly combine different materials<br />
with hanji paper, including wood, glass, or concrete!<br />
The possibilities are endless, and I am eager to continue<br />
learning and experimenting.<br />

나탈리 티볼트 씨는 전라북도 익산시에서 15년째 거<br />
주하고 있으며 영어 강사로 일하고 있습니다. 그의 한지<br />
공예 작품은 지난 2016년 전북라이프 매거진에 수록된<br />
적이 있는데, 이번 발간호에서 한지공예가 특집을 발행<br />
하면서 나탈리씨를 다시 만나 최근 그의 작품들을 다시<br />
볼 기회가 있었습니다.<br />
나탈리씨는 2010년 한국인 한지공예가를 만난 후<br />
처음 한지공예를 시작했습니다. 그를 가르쳤던 공예가<br />
는 나탈리씨로 하여금 스스로 자유롭게 매체를 탐구하<br />
면서도 한지를 이용하는 방법을 가르쳤으며, 그가 스스<br />
로의 창의성을 펼칠 수 있도록 했습니다. 수업이 몇 회<br />
차 지나지 않아서 나탈리씨는 스스로 한지공예를 하기<br />
시작했으며, 여러 시행착오를 거쳐 실험하고, 배워나갔<br />
습니다. 처음 한지공예를 시작한지 이미 수년의 시간이<br />
지났지만, 나탈리씨는 아직도 자신의 작업물을 발전시<br />

판매하는 글로벌 온라인 마켓)에서 자신이 만든 액세서<br />

근 기회가 닿아 익산과 전주에서 열리는 세 곳의 공동<br />
작품전시회에 작품을 출품하기도 했습니다. 그러한 경<br />
험을 통해 나탈리씨는 각 분야, 각계각층의 작가들을<br />
만나 소통할 수 있는 기회를 얻었으며, 스스로의 작품<br />
을 위한 새로운 시각을 탐구하고 새로운 도전을 할 수<br />
있게 되었습니다.<br />
최근 한국 문화에 대한 관심이 증가하면서, 나탈리<br />
씨는 한지 공예에 다시금 흥미를 갖게 됐습니다. 그는<br />
예술적 관심의 유입으로 한지공예의 전통은 유지되면<br />
서도 한편 새로운 영역으로 발전할 수 있기를 바라고 있<br />

visit to the institute, Lee shared<br />
her philosophy of history education<br />
and her passion for developing<br />
educational programs<br />
and materials since 2004. She<br />
noted the problem that history<br />
education which focuses only<br />
on passing exams by memorizing<br />
names and dates is a process<br />
that can be boring and difficult<br />
for students.<br />

Throughout our visit, it was evident that Lee’s guiding<br />
principle is bringing Korean history alive for learners.<br />
Rather than learning about history as something distant,<br />
students can feel connected to history and view themselves<br />
as a crucial link between the past and the future.<br />
The Hayerang Institute achieves this through a variety of<br />
learning tools developed in-house. The institute produces<br />
colorful and interactive board<br />
games, including one enhanced<br />
with an augmented reality (AR)<br />
app — if the game cards are<br />
scanned with the AR phone<br />
app, different historical figures<br />
appear, so players can watch history<br />
come to life on their phone<br />
screen while playing. Another<br />
unique learning tool is a book<br />
that integrates Korean history education with English<br />
learning, allowing students to act as tour guides while<br />
introducing historical sites to English-speaking visitors.<br />
Jeollabuk-do Local History Programs<br />
Being based in Jeollabuk-do, the Hayerang Institute also<br />
has plenty to offer for those interested in local history. For<br />
example, puzzles based on the portrait of Joseon founder<br />
King Taejo housed at Gyeonggijeon in Jeonju Hanok Village<br />
include space for students to imagine their own royal<br />
portrait and what deeds they hope to be remembered for.<br />
Another piece of local history highlighted by Lee was the<br />
role of the Honam region (Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do)<br />
during the Imjin War, a period of Japanese invasions of<br />
Korea from 1592 to 1598. Although most people are familiar<br />
with Yi Sun-sin, the military hero of the time, he is<br />
usually associated with battles fought against Japanese<br />
warships off the southern coast of Korea. However, his<br />
military career also included a period of commanding the<br />
Jeolla region, and he repeatedly emphasized the importance<br />
of Honam during the war. Even today, Jeolla-do’s<br />
comparatively flat landscape makes it a key agricultural<br />
region, especially for grain production — this was just<br />
as true during the Imjin War, when Korea and Japan<br />
were both eager to hold the region to provide food for<br />
troops. But because of Korea’s staunch defense of Honam,<br />
it remained the only region never to be occupied by the<br />
Japanese during the war.<br />
Big historical concepts<br />
are interpreted through a<br />
local scale that makes history<br />
more approachable.<br />
The Hayerang Institute offers educational materials<br />
about two notable battles in Jeollabuk-do, the battles of<br />
Ungchi and Ichi in 1592. Ungchi and Ichi are two mountain<br />
passes around Jinan and Geumsan, respectively, and<br />
passing through either would have allowed the Japanese<br />
army to take the fortress in Jeonju and control the Honam<br />
region. At the battle of Ungchi, Japanese forces were held<br />
off through two waves of battle before finally breaking<br />
through the pass, but their losses were so heavy that they<br />
were forced to retreat anyway before taking the fortress.<br />
The battle of Ichi similarly ended in failure for the Japanese<br />
military, which then gave up on trying to occupy Honam<br />
and eventually lost the war.<br />
In telling the story of Jeollabuk-do<br />
during the Imjin War, Lee<br />
emphasized the role of everyday<br />
residents, not only military leaders,<br />
in defending their homeland<br />
from occupation. Locals raised<br />
troops by themselves, and Lee<br />
explained that “they came from<br />
diverse jobs, from nobi [the slave class during the Joseon<br />
dynasty] to Buddhist monks.” In fact, she noted that warrior<br />
monks were the most feared fighters because of their<br />
intimate knowledge of the mountains and local terrain.<br />
Through this kind of storytelling, big historical concepts<br />
are interpreted through a local scale that makes history<br />
more approachable.<br />
Making Global Connections<br />
In addition to local history programs, the Hayerang Institute<br />
is also involved in international efforts to teach about<br />
Korean history and culture. Lee described her experiences<br />
living in South Africa and Australia leading education programs<br />
for overseas Korean families, as well as the institute’s<br />
collaboration with schools in countries like China and Vietnam.<br />
Of course, with COVID continuing to limit overseas<br />
travel, many programs of the past have been put on hold.<br />
When I asked Lee where she would like to travel next when<br />
the opportunity arises, she picked the New York Korea Center<br />
currently under construction in Manhattan.<br />
The goals of the Hayerang Institute of History and<br />
Culture are to make history education more exciting and<br />
to reach a variety of learners, from local students and<br />
multicultural families to the Korean diaspora and people<br />
in other countries who are interested in Korean history<br />
and culture. Exploring the past together is a sure way<br />
forward to a more connected future.<br />

Art<br />
Gunsan is known as a city with many contrasts.<br />
It boasts the best of both worlds:<br />
the natural beauty of the Geum River<br />
spilling into the Yellow Sea, and hightech<br />
facilities that make it a flourishing<br />
manufacturing city. But there’s also another duality<br />
that makes Gunsan even more captivating for visitors:<br />
it thrives with history and modernity at its<br />
forefront. Tourists flock to Gunsan to explore the<br />
landmarks that symbolize Korea’s modern history.<br />
Several remains from the Japanese colonial period<br />
exist as reminders of the country’s dark past. They<br />
not only strengthen Korea’s nationalism but also<br />
deepen the young generation’s knowledge about<br />
the atrocities of war.<br />

관광객들이 한국의 근대사를 상징하<br />
는 명소를 탐방하기 위해 군산에 모여듭<br />
니다. 군산에는 이렇게 살아 숨 쉬는 역사<br />
를 보존하고 있는 장소들과 함께 예술, 영<br />
화, 오락을 통해서 지역 주민의 정서를 표<br />
현하는 문화 공간도 풍부합니다.<br />
팔마재 1912<br />
이 대형 카페는 2층 건물이며, 고전적<br />
이고 현대적인 인테리어가 적절히 하나<br />
되어 꾸며져 있습니다. 뒷문을 열면 앞에<br />
옛 군사 철도의 자취이자, 과거의 군산을<br />
떠올리게 하는 철도가 있는 테라스가 있<br />
습니다. 같은 단지 내 다른 건물에서는 지<br />
역 예술가들이 정기 전시회를 개최합니다.<br />

신흥동 일본식 가옥, 또는 히로쓰가<br />

From the outside, you might think<br />
that this place is simply a big warehouse<br />
because of its tall facade and rustic exteriors.<br />
But once you step in, you’ll realize that<br />
it’s a complex art gallery, cafe, and cultural<br />
space where like-minded artists gather to<br />
display their works.<br />
The huge cafe occupies two floors, with<br />
a mix of antique and modern interior<br />
decor. If you open the back door, you’ll find<br />
a terrace with a remnant of one of Gunsan’s<br />
old railroads in front reminding locals of<br />
the past.<br />
In the same complex, there’s another<br />
building that houses regular themed exhibitions<br />
featuring local artists. The works of<br />
art often feature the beauty of Gunsan in<br />

Historical Japanese house<br />
Several structures from the Japanese<br />
colonial period have been restored<br />
and opened as museums for visitors<br />
in Gunsan. Some of them include the<br />
Old Gunsan Customs Museum and the<br />
Gunsan Modern History Museum, as well<br />
as old Japanese-style restaurants, banks,<br />
and houses.<br />
One house that is considered a hidden<br />
gem in Gunsan is the Hirotsu Japanese<br />
House in Sinheung-dong. It’s a traditional<br />
Japanese-style mansion with trees that<br />
are several hundred years old, garden<br />
ponds, and statues. It became National<br />
Registered Cultural Heritage No. 183 on<br />
June 18, 2005. This house was a residence<br />
for the wealthy class during the Japanese<br />
occupation period. It has also previously<br />
been used as a drama or movie set.<br />

Levant is the only restaurant in Jeollabuk-do<br />
that serves a full range of Middle Eastern and<br />
eastern Mediterranean dishes. Its cuisine is<br />
composed of dishes from Syria, Jordan, Turkey,<br />
Palestine, and parts of Iraq and Greece.<br />

Levant is a Middle Eastern fusion restaurant<br />
recently opened in Jeonju’s bustling<br />
Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Old<br />
Gate area. It is the only restaurant in<br />
Jeollabuk-do that serves a full range of<br />
Middle Eastern and eastern Mediterranean<br />
dishes. Levant’s cuisine includes dishes from<br />
Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Palestine, and parts<br />
of Iraq and Greece. The menu is made up<br />
of halal meats and delicious vegetarian and<br />
vegan options. Levant’s spice-imbued lamb<br />
kabobs are slow-cooked over an open flame.<br />
The chicken shish tawook has a similar presentation<br />
to lamb kabobs and is marinated in<br />
spices before being slowly roasted. Levant’s<br />
meat dishes are a complexity of flavors combined<br />
with a slow-cooked tenderness. The<br />
menu also includes a diverse set of plant-based<br />
dishes, making it ideal for people seeking a<br />
vegetarian or vegan option. This includes<br />
Levant’s freshly made walnut and roasted<br />
garlic hummus, which can be eaten alone or<br />
enjoyed with handmade pita bread. Levant’s<br />
pita is made from scratch minutes before it<br />
is served fluffy and warm to the touch. Other<br />
vegetarian options include Levant’s baba<br />
ganoush and falafel. The baba ghanoush is an<br />
eggplant-based dish sharing a similar texture<br />
to hummus and is made from an assortment<br />
of fresh vegetables. Levant’s chickpea-based<br />
falafel, created with a myriad of herbs and<br />
spices, is their vegetarian favorite.<br />

Levant is the only restaurant in the Jeollabuk-do<br />
Province that serves a full range of Middle<br />
Eastern and eastern Mediterranean dishes.<br />
The common theme with all the food on Levant’s<br />
menu is the complexity and richness of flavors. Yara<br />
Abu Dakka, Levant’s owner, explained that while<br />
there could be as many as 15 different spices in a<br />
dish, the dish isn’t necessarily spicy. Levant’s diverse<br />
cuisine seems to reflect the cultural background of its<br />
owner. Yara was raised in Dubai by her Palestinian<br />
father and Syrian-Turkish mother. Her family’s ethnic<br />
diversity combined with the cultural diversity of her<br />
hometown—Dubai, a cultural melting pot— exposed<br />
Yara to the full range of Middle Eastern and eastern<br />
Mediterranean cuisine. Yara has a practical, intelligent,<br />
and warm disposition. She came to Jeonju as<br />
a graduate engineering student at JBNU focusing on<br />
sustainable energy. When asked about her motivation<br />
for opening Levant, she sensibly explained that she<br />
missed food from her homeland.<br />
Yara is passionate about sharing her culture<br />
through food. Her eyes light up and her voice grows<br />
choked as she talks about the experience of helping<br />
customers understand her homeland’s cuisine.<br />
Levant’s cuisine is distinct from Korean food because<br />
of its complexity of flavor. Yara stated that sometimes<br />
her biggest challenge is her customer’s lack of reference<br />
for Middle Eastern and eastern Mediterranean<br />
cuisine. Regardless of any first-time customer’s confusion<br />
about the taste of the dishes, Levant’s menu has<br />
been welcomed with open arms by the Jeollabuk-do<br />
community. If you go to Levant on any weekday, it’s<br />
busy with tables occupied by customers excited to<br />
experience something delicious.<br />
Levant’s atmosphere is warm thanks to the friendliness<br />
of the three-member team whose nationalities<br />
range from European to Central Asian. The Levant<br />
team members smile easily and are eager to serve<br />
customers. Yara’s passion for her homeland’s cuisine<br />
seems to have had an osmotic effect on her employees,<br />
who demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of the<br />
menu and food-making process.<br />

Yara explained that the name Levant<br />
comes from an ancient reference to the<br />
eastern Mediterranean and central Middle<br />
Eastern region. Given her diverse cultural and<br />
ethnic background, Yara seems to come from<br />
a homeland that covers an entire region of<br />
the world and is not relegated to one specific<br />
country. What makes Levant unique is the<br />
passion that goes into each dish. This passion<br />
seems to emanate from Yara’s desire to share<br />
good food and, even if in a small way, share a<br />
meaningful part of her homeland and diverse<br />
cultural story.<br />

레반트 : 전주에서 동지중해의 진미를 즐기세요<br />
새로운 중동 퓨전 레스토랑 레반트가 최근 전주의 북적<br />
거리는 전북대학교(JBNU) 구정문 인근에 문을 열었습니다.<br />
상호명으로 쓰인 ‘레반트’라는 지역 이름에서도 알 수 있지<br />
만, 전북 지역 유일의 중동과 동부 지중해 음식을 맛볼 수<br />
있는 식당입니다.레반트의 요리는 시리아, 요르단, 터키, 팔<br />
레스타인, 그리고 일부 이라크와 그리스 음식으로 구성되<br />
어 있습니다. 메뉴는 할랄 고기와 맛있는 채식주의 옵션으<br />
로 이루어져 있습니다.<br />
레반트 메뉴에 있는 모든 음식의 공통점은 맛의 복잡함<br />
과 풍부함입니다. 이 곳의 사장인 야라 아부 다카 (Yara Abu<br />
Dakka) 씨는 한 접시에 15가지 향신료가 쓰이기도 하지만<br />
반드시 맵지만은 않다고 설명했습니다. 레반트의 다양한 요<br />
리는 그녀의 문화적 배경을 반영하는 것 같기도 합니다. 야<br />
라씨는 두바이에서 팔레스타인 출신의 아버지와 시리아계<br />

다. 그녀는 전북대학교의 공학 대학원생으로 전주에 와서, 지<br />
속가능한 에너지를 연구했습니다. 식당을 개업하게 된 동기<br />
에 대해 묻자 그녀는 고향의 음식이 그리웠다고 말했습니다.<br />
야라씨는 음식을 통해 문화를 공유하는 것에 열정을 가<br />
지고 있습니다. 손님들이 자신의 고향의 음식을 이해하도<br />
록 도왔던 경험을 말할 때 그녀의 눈은 빛나고 목소리는 촉<br />
촉해집니다. 레반트의 음식은 맛이 복잡하기 때문에 한식과<br />
