<strong>WWBA</strong> HOLDS ITS FIRST<br />
TALENT SHOW<br />

n April 21, <strong>2022</strong>, a small group gathered on Zoom for the first <strong>WWBA</strong> Talent<br />
Show, jointly conceived by Allison Sloto and President Amanda Fried, with<br />
program design and technological logistics arranged by Allison. While possibly<br />
there are still clandestine jugglers among us, the participants universally revealed<br />
musical abilities not before shared in this way.<br />
<strong>WWBA</strong> Past President Lisa Denig started the evening off, setting an easeful tone<br />
with rich chords and a lovely piano rendition of “Let It Be,” by The Beatles.<br />
Immediate Past President Lisa Smith next sang “Bread and Roses,” a poem written<br />
by James Oppenheim that was later put to music. In a spoken introduction, Judge<br />
Smith conveyed the historical significance of the song, which was inspired by the emergence<br />
of labor leaders and the creation of unions around the time of the Industrial<br />
Revolution, as they banded together to improve their wages and working conditions.<br />
One of the labor leaders was Rose Schneiderman, and she is credited with saying that<br />
there should be bread for all, and roses too. In 2001, Judge Smith sang “Bread and<br />
Roses” at the <strong>WWBA</strong> annual dinner, along with several other songs, at the request of<br />
then President Linda Markowitz.<br />
Corresponding Secretary Jill Oziemblewski next played a piano adaptation of the<br />
suite from “To Kill A Mockingbird,” by Elmer Bernstein, which when played by a symphony<br />
is reverie, and a Chopin Prelude (Op. 28, No. 15) known as the “Raindrop”<br />
prelude.<br />

My obsession<br />
with Hamilton<br />
should be no secret<br />
by now, nor should<br />
my tendency toward<br />
insomnia. So, one<br />
night as I lie awake<br />
obsessing about the<br />
atrocities in the<br />

Ukraine, and the<br />
Bucha massacre in particular, the line<br />
from Act II “who lives, who dies, who<br />
tells your story?” kept replaying in my<br />
head.<br />
As my <strong>WWBA</strong> presidency draws to<br />
a close, friends and colleagues have<br />
asked me whether the work of the past<br />
year has been worth it. The answer is<br />
always a resounding yes. I love the<br />
<strong>WWBA</strong> – its people, its purpose, its future<br />
– and all I have wanted, to borrow<br />
from Eliza Hamilton, is to be a part of<br />
the narrative. And, as our WBASNY<br />
liaison recently said, making a contribution<br />
and feeling a sense of belonging<br />
to a mission brought me joy.<br />
One of the items on my why-doesthis-never-shrink<br />
“to do” list is to write<br />
the year-end report for WBASNY, outlining<br />
what we, what I, have accomplished<br />
this year, so that my legacy can<br />
be recorded for posterity. Certainly, I<br />
understand the importance of chronicling<br />
a year’s worth of achievements,<br />
of educational and inspiring programs,<br />
of successful community outreach, and<br />
I am proud to highlight the efforts of<br />
our membership. But I wonder…is that<br />
really all a legacy is?<br />

googling. There are the standing definitions,<br />
an amount of money or property left<br />
to someone in a will, not applicable here;<br />
or denoting software or hardware that has<br />
been suspended but is difficult to replace<br />
because of its widespread use – um, no,<br />
thank you. It is generally accepted that the<br />
things one does form the foundation of<br />
one’s legacy, but the more I read, the more<br />
it seems to relate to how one is remembered.<br />
On April 7, <strong>2022</strong>, Ketanji Brown Jackson<br />
was confirmed as a United States Supreme<br />
Court Justice and, like many of us,<br />
I was glued to the screen. Notwithstanding<br />
her inspiring credentials, the confirmation<br />
hearings were, shall we say, highly<br />
contentious. Truthfully, though, in a year’s<br />
time, I may not remember that she graduated<br />
from both Harvard College and<br />
Harvard Law School, or that she clerked<br />
for Justice Stephen G. Breyer in the United<br />
States Supreme Court, or, truthfully, any of<br />
her incredible accomplishments that led to<br />
the historic 53-to-47 vote. I will remember,<br />
though, the look of utmost pride on<br />
her daughter’s face and the way she made<br />
her family, and so many of us, feel. <strong>May</strong>be<br />
that is what makes a legacy.<br />
The <strong>2022</strong> Annual Dinner is just around<br />
the corner – less than a month away! –<br />
and we are slowly starting the transition to<br />
our next crop of leaders. I am proud of<br />
what we have achieved thus far this year,<br />
particularly in light of the complications of<br />
a largely virtual existence, but I hope that<br />
over the past year of President’s Messages,<br />
I have made you feel something. I hope I<br />
left behind a story worth telling. ◗<br />

❑ Deadline for newsletter submissions is the 10th of the month prior to publication (submissions<br />
received after the deadline are subject to the discretion of the editor).<br />
❑ Send submissions as email attachments to Jill Oziemblewski at jill_oziemblewski@yahoo.com.<br />
❑ Articles should be 1,000 words or fewer. Remove all pagination, headers, footers or other<br />
formatting, other than bold, underline or italics. Authors are encouraged to submit photographs<br />
for publication with their submissions and include a short biographical statement with<br />
their submissions.<br />
❑ Materials submitted allow the <strong>WWBA</strong> a limited copyright and full permission to reprint the<br />
material in any <strong>WWBA</strong> publication or on its website without additional consent.<br />
❑ Photographs must be high-resolution (150 dpi or more) and the subject and all persons in<br />
each photograph must be fully identified.<br />
PROGRAM SCHEDULING<br />
❑ First visit the <strong>WWBA</strong> website: www.wwbany.org and click on the calendar at the home page to<br />
view scheduled programs. Conflicts in scheduling will be assessed on a case by case basis, with<br />
priority for early submissions.<br />
❑ Contact Jill Oziemblewski at jill_oziemblewski@yahoo.com to schedule a <strong>WWBA</strong> sponsored<br />
or co-sponsored program, including committee meetings, CLE programs, etc.<br />
❑ Once you have reserved the date with Jill Oziemblewski, proceed with planning your program<br />
and creating your flyer.<br />
❑ Flyers must be approved by the Programs Committee. In advance of the 10th of the month,<br />
please send your flyer to the Program Committee Co-chairs for review and copy the Executive<br />
Director. Once approved, please send your final flyer to the Executive Director, Elisabeth Campos<br />
and the President for publication on the website calendar and the newsletter calendar. The<br />
final flyer will also be emailed to the membership.<br />
❑ We will also consider publicizing programs from outside organizations that may be of interest<br />
to our members.<br />
❑ Post-event: You may report on the success of your program and provide photographs of the<br />
speakers and participants that can be included in an upcoming newsletter. Send your submission<br />
to Jennifer Robinson, following the guidelines above.<br />

Q: When and why did you<br />
become involved in the<br />
<strong>WWBA</strong>?<br />
A: My involvement in the<br />
<strong>WWBA</strong> started around<br />
1994. At the time, a respected<br />
female lawyer<br />
questioned why I thought<br />
about joining the <strong>WWBA</strong>.<br />
She did not believe in the<br />
merits of a female oriented<br />
organization. After getting<br />
to know some of the<br />
<strong>WWBA</strong> members I decided<br />
to join and am glad<br />
that I did. The collegiality<br />
and support of the other<br />
members has been invaluable.<br />
The diversity of the<br />
membership has enriched<br />
my legal and personal experience.<br />
Q: Which activities and positions<br />
of the <strong>WWBA</strong> have<br />
you participated in?<br />
A: I co-chaired the CLE<br />
Committee. We got the<br />
<strong>WWBA</strong> certified as an accredited<br />
New York CLE<br />
provider. I still remember<br />
the large amount of paperwork<br />
that was involved.<br />
It also required the efforts<br />
of many of our members<br />
to conceive of and implement<br />
the programs. It is<br />
rewarding to see the large<br />
and varied CLE offerings<br />
that the <strong>WWBA</strong> offers its<br />
members.<br />
Over the years I have<br />
enjoyed the many meetings<br />
and CLEs that I participated<br />
in. The Zoom<br />
meetings during COVID<br />
have been a good way to<br />
stay in touch with others in<br />
the profession, to continue<br />

to develop knowledge, and<br />
to stay current with the<br />
changing environment.<br />
Q: What would you like to<br />
see the <strong>WWBA</strong> accomplish<br />
in the future?<br />
A: I would like to see the organization<br />
continue with its<br />
efforts to educate our members;<br />
foster networking and<br />
cooperation; and to be an<br />
influence in legislation.<br />
Q: Please tell us about your<br />
legal career?<br />
A: Law is my third career. I<br />
was a junior and senior high<br />
school math teacher. Then,<br />
after obtaining an M.B.A., I<br />
pursued a career in corporate<br />
marketing and business<br />
development. Working for<br />
a regulated company I<br />
found I was dealing with a<br />
lot of legal issues. I attended<br />
law school at night, originally<br />
as an enhancement to my<br />
corporate career. I found the<br />
law to be fascinating and<br />
decided to pursue that career.<br />
Practicing law utilizes<br />
the skills I developed as an<br />
educator, working with<br />
people of various cultures,<br />
and analysis to solve problems.<br />
After law school I<br />
worked with some local lawyers<br />
and then opened my<br />
own practice. I also was an<br />
adjunct professor in Mercy<br />
College’s paralegal program.<br />
My law practice focuses<br />
on trusts and estates,<br />
real estate, and small business.<br />
For eighteen years I<br />
have also had the honor of<br />
serving as Lewisboro Town<br />
Justice, which has been interesting<br />
and challenging. I<br />
believe it is an honor and<br />
privilege to be able to serve<br />
my community in this way.<br />
Q: What advice do you have<br />
for new lawyers entering the<br />
profession?<br />
A: Be open-minded about<br />
where your career takes you.<br />
Be adventurous and explore<br />
multiple areas of practice. I<br />
hope you find at least one<br />
area of law that you are passionate<br />
about. It is also important<br />
to try to balance<br />
work and family and to provide<br />
service to your community.<br />
Q: How have you balanced<br />
family responsibilities and<br />
your legal career?<br />
A: My son was grown when<br />
I began my legal career,<br />
and we focused on quality<br />
time. Dinnertime and weekends<br />
were important times to<br />
be together. I was fortunate<br />
that my husband worked locally,<br />
where my corporate<br />

career involved domestic<br />
and international travel.<br />
When traveling, I called<br />
home daily. I also sent picture<br />
postcards from various<br />
locations. My son still has<br />
many of his tee shirts that I<br />
brought him from my travels.<br />
We also spent vacations<br />
as a family.<br />
Q: When you are not lawyering,<br />
which community<br />
activities and other interests<br />
do you pursue?<br />
A: I serve on the Advisory<br />
Board of Mercy College<br />
School of Behavioral Sciences<br />
and the Lewisboro<br />
Land Trust. I enjoy reading,<br />
learning new things, and<br />
playing golf. Over the<br />
years I have held Director<br />
and Officer positions in<br />
many community and professional<br />
organizations including<br />
the Lewisboro Library,<br />
the Westchester<br />
Children’s Association, the<br />
Westchester Exceptional<br />
Children’s School, and the<br />
International Telecommunications<br />
Society, and served<br />
as President of the<br />
Westchester County<br />

❑ On <strong>May</strong> 5, <strong>2022</strong>, Dolores Gebhardt, Esq., a Partner at<br />
Goldschmidt & Genovese, LLP, was inducted as President of the<br />
Westchester County Bar Association at its 122nd Annual Banquet.<br />
Dolores is the first person ever to have served as President of the<br />
Westchester Women’s Bar Association, President of the White Plains<br />
Bar Association, and now President of the Westchester County Bar<br />
Association.<br />
Dolores gave a vibrant speech outlining her motivation for the<br />
year ahead, centered around a theme of unification among attorneys,<br />
who are no doubt “stronger together.” She also took time to<br />
recognize her family and three mentors, all of whom were present, and one of whom,<br />
our revered <strong>WWBA</strong> founding member, the Honorable Sondra M. Miller, administered<br />
the oath of office.<br />
The <strong>WWBA</strong> extends our heartfelt congratulations to Dolores, as well as our confidence<br />
in her leadership, as she takes the helm of the WCBA.<br />
❑ At the same event, the WCBA recognized Mary F. . Kelly<br />
elly, , Esq.,<br />
with a certificate for her 50 years in the practice of law. Mary is a<br />
former President of both WBASNY and <strong>WWBA</strong>. She continues to<br />
practice matrimonial law and trusts and estates law at her firm of<br />
Kelly & Knaplund in White Plains.<br />
❑ Kurzman, Eisenberg, Corbin & Lever LLP is pleased to announce<br />
that Robbin E. Sweeney has joined their firm as Senior Attorney in<br />
the Real Estate division. Robbin has concentrated on real estate law<br />
since the beginning of her career as a real estate agent, then working<br />
for Merrill Lynch Mortgage Corporation while attending law<br />
school, before transitioning into in private practice. She brings to<br />
our firm a distinct style combining her law degree with a Master’s in<br />
Mental Health Counseling, creating calm, organized, solution-focused<br />
transactions. Her certification as a Professional Coach prepared<br />
her to develop and provide engaging and informative<br />
trainings, seminars and webinars, for the NYSBA, WBASNY, NYS<br />
Office of the Governor, private entities and the public on a variety of<br />
topics including Preparing Your Home for Sale, Strategies for Reducing<br />
Stress in Your Law Practice, The Importance of Estate Planning,<br />
Families in Transition, and Caring for Aging Loved Ones.<br />
She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Westchester Women’s Bar<br />
Association’s Real Estate Committee. Robbin has recently been selected<br />
to develop the curriculum for the real estate module of the<br />
new Pace University Paralegal Certification Program. Her passion is<br />

Closing the evening was President Amanda Fried, whose deep musical talents<br />
range from vocal performance to the playing of multiple instruments. Here playing the<br />
ukulele, Amanda sang a reimagined version of “Follow Your Arrow,” by Kacey<br />
Musgraves, with original lyrics that humorously detailed the realities of practicing family<br />
law.<br />
Thank you to Allison for providing the format for this casual and fun evening.<br />
Thanks also to those who participated, and to those who joined as spectators. We<br />
hope to do this again next year, possibly in salon style. ◗<br />
