our beliefs
We believe in home, that it should be a place of
comfort, rest, and security. We believe families are
sacred—the ones we inherit and the ones we create.
We believe in seeking balance between productivity
and rest and learning to find contentment in both. We
believe in human kindness and the power of working
together to accomplish big goals. We believe in courage,
in moving past comfort zones, and honestly seeking
knowledge from mistakes. We believe that each day is
a gift and miracles are visible if only we look for them.
COVID-19
UPDATE
spring 2022
Cambridge Retirement Living continues to remain
vigilant in our pursuit of the health and safety of our staff
and our residents in the face of COVID-19 and its variants.
Our restrictions too, remain the same, under the
guidance of the PA Department of Human Services,
and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services.
Masks must be worn, hands must be washed, and social
distancing is to be maintained whenever possible.
But we continue to be thankful for the resilience and
kindness of our residents, their friends and families, and our
staff as we broach new ways to reunite everyone as safely
as possible. While we don't have any updates regarding
policy for our COVID update, we can happily say that
each and every Cambridge neighborhood is COVID free!
We so enjoyed our fall and winter events and look forward
to sharing new springtime memories with you soon.
We will continue to closely monitor the requirements and
restrictions to stay Covid Safe, but for now let’s continue to
find ways to safely convene! We have missed you deeply, and
we know our residents are grateful to hold you close again!
My
grandmother’s husband was a shoe
repairman from Bulgaria. Their courtship had
been a quick one. He’d come over from Sofia – a
regal city – and on the recommendation of the
pastor, joined her bridge club.
My grandmother was rarely beaten at the
game. The man from Bulgaria was a dominating
bridge player and he spoke English well enough.
He may have been the first to beat her, or test
her skill, in many years. In any case the two were
married three weeks later.
The man was short, friendly to children,
and loved to wear black work shirts with large
pockets on the front into which he stowed
implements of his trade – pliers and small
hammers.
So industrious and careful was he that he
quickly had his own shop on the town square.
We called him Bibi and my grandmother, who
could be stern, adored him and his little shop. He
brought her a lot of happiness.
The men in the town enjoyed having an
eastern European artisan see to their expensive
leather shoes. I think it made them feel lordly. He
did well.
Another consequence of his arrival was
that our family gained a vantage point for the
town’s little Easter Parade. The shoe repair store
had above it a second-floor apartment which
was, so far as I remember, never rented out.
So, all eight kids had the luxury of
climbing those stairs to the second floor on
Easter Sundays to watch from above as the town
celebrated the heavenly resurrection and the
beginning of spring.
Bibi opened the large French windows to
refresh us with the spring air. Grandmother piled
warm blueberry scones on the table and my
mother sipped tea from a small cup.
The Easter Parade went by. High school
marching bands, the flower club and garden
clubs, the Lady Slippers, the Nightingales, all
these went by.
I remember feeling particularly glum. I
was missing my school friends and ready to head
back into my bustling little 10-year-old life.
Still, I watched on, sighing grumpily as
my brother squeezed in beside me. Mothers
were invited to push newborn’s along in strollers
somewhere in the middle of the parade. They
wore their best pastels and I remember hats with
feathers and long dresses and beautiful shoes.
I had my head out of the window,
catching the breeze as I watched some ominous
clouds roll in. Suddenly, a raindrop hit the back
of my head and I looked up to see thousands
of glossy droplets hurtling down to the parade
below.
I was struck by guilt, had I wished this
upon these paraders with my sour mood?
Would they be crushed by the weight of the
rain, dampening their Easter fun? But to my
amazement, the town erupted in squeals of
delight and laughter. Colorful umbrellas emerged
and bloomed like flowers below, until the whole
of the parade was covered by a blanket of
colorful dots of nylon.
My siblings rushed around to grab their
boots and coats to join in the splash of puddles
below. I stayed behind, the smell of wet earth
washing away my ill humor. I felt a large hand
on my shoulder and turned round to see Bibi,
smiling out of the open window.
“This will make our flowers grow.” He
winked at me, and we sat quietly, and listened to
the bustle below. I watched the rainbow of dots
go by feeling lighter than before. The magic of
Bibi’s second story apartment view and promise
of warmer days granted me a moment of peace
(something rare to find in a family of eight).
I’ve been thinking about that beautiful,
soggy, Easter Parade this year and what it meant
to that community, my hometown.
We’ve chosen Refresh as the theme for
our Spring Edition of Cambridge Times because
it seems fitting to focus on Spring as a time
when we get to hit the refresh button on our
perspective, on our lives, and on the future.
MEET THE
STAFF!
Say "Hello!" to the new Executive Directors
of Cambridge Hillside, Cambridge Ebensburg
and our BRAND NEW Cambridge Falls!
Jason Dolby
Executive Director of Cambridge Hillside
Jason has always been drawn to seniors. “I feel like it’s my life calling!”
While working previously in orthopedics, they were always his favorite
patients. He believes that caring for one of the most vulnerable
populations, and knowing that his work not only impacts residents but
also staff, families, and the community is a privilege that he’s grateful
to be able to take part in! Jason has three amazing dogs, Layla and
Rollo (Bernese Mountain Dogs) and Boomer (an Aussie/Collie). When
he’s not taking care of our amazing Hillside seniors, you can find Jason
camping, jamming out to musical theatre, or shopping for anything and
everything! We’re so glad to have you on the team!
Executive Director of Cambridge Falls
Mickie monseau
Mickie Monseau grew up in Hookstown, PA which she lovingly calls
“Farmland”. She began working with seniors at 17 and developed a
great passion for caring for our senior population. She says it “makes
her heart full” to see the happiness she can bring into their lives. During
the pandemic, she said she watched the series Yellowstone TWO times!
She’s been in Nursing Home Care for over 25 years in Skilled Care,
Psychiatric, Personal Care and Assisted Living. She married her high
school sweetheart 32 years ago and is so proud of her two children and
four grandbabies! She spends her free time watching them grow and
learn new things. Welcome to the Cambridge Crew, Mickie!
STAFF FEATURE
Connie Cretin
Executive Director of Cambridge Ebensburg
Connie Cretin grew up in “Chester Springs” right in PA! She was inspired
to work with seniors by watching her sister! She’s been an RN for almost
30 years! Connie and her husband are home bodies and have 10 acres
in the country! When they're not fishing in their ponds, the two love to
watch "One Calls to the Heart" on TV! They’re very proud of their amazing
five children, three grandchildren and their pets, a cat named Luna and
a dog named Gander! She mentioned that during Covid her kids were
responsible for the cooking, so they’d have Italian night, breakfast for
dinner…you name it! Welcome to the team Connie!
...and our clinical liaisons!
They're the folks to call when you have questions or need additional
details about the services we provide! Laura, Rachael and Amie!
Laura Blanchetti
Clinical Liaison for Ebensburg, Creekside and Hillside
Laura grew up in Forest Hills (just 45 minutes from Cambridge Hillside and
Cambridge Creekside!). She has an extensive background in psychology,
early intervention, and elder care! She even spent time as a personal
care home administrator before joining us at Cambridge Retirement
Living. She says the favorite TV show she binged during the Pandemic
was Schitt's Creek! But she also found more time to be in the wilderness
and enjoy the outdoors during Covid. She has two adorable feline friends
Scarlett and Juliet and enjoys spending her time with her twin boys and
her family. We’re so glad to have you join us, Laura!
Rachael tasker
Clinical Liaison for Warren and Corry
Rachael Tasker grew up in Corry, PA! (So close to our very own
Cambridge Corry) Her journey of senior care started in Home Health
and Hospice, and it continued because she adores hearing all about
the senior’s life experiences! To pass the time during the pandemic,
Rachael told us she made a LOT of comfort food, including an old
family recipe from her Grandma Neylon called 5-1. (You take your
first five ingredients, potatoes, sausage, green beans, corn and onion
and add them to tomato soup! 5…into 1!) Rachael is happily married
with two boys! They like to enjoy the outdoors with their two yorkies,
making bonfires and taking rides on their 4 wheelers! Welcome Rachael!
Amie sattof
Clinical Liaison for Riverview
Amie grew up in Hannover Township (just 15 minutes from Cambridge
Riverview!). When she was sixteen, she worked in the kitchen at Mercy
Hospital near her home and fell in love with the seniors she served.
From there she went to nursing school and became an LPN! Her first
job out of school was working in a skilled nursing facility. During the
pandemic Amie stayed on the floor to help and work, but she said in
her time off she would do a LOT of recreational reading! If she’s not
reading, Amie, her two kids and her husband of 24 years are taking
care of their puppy Cali! She and her family love the beach, and Amie is
particularly fond of gardening! We’re so glad you’re on the team Amie!
Now turn the page to meet our last Liaison, Kathleen!
Meet Kathleen
For those of the Cambridge Crew who’ve read our Newsletter these past few years, the name
Kathleen Frickanish is probably quite familiar! But this issue, we’re proud to present Kathleen
in her new title as our Director of Sales & Marketing, as well as our Clinical Liaison for Falls,
Pointe and New Castle! While many of our readers have had the pleasure of communicating
with Kathleen in the past, we’d love to delve into a little more of what makes Kathleen so great.
10
Kathleen grew up in Ellwood
City, PA (just about ten miles from
our new neighborhood, Cambridge
Falls!) with her parents, her two
sisters, a cat, and a dog! She and
her sisters (unfortunately pets had
to stay behind), attended Lincoln
High School as local gals to Ellwood
City. But Kathleen continued on to
complete the LPN Program at the
Lawrence County Nursing Program in
2001.
When we asked how Kathleen
had first fallen in love with senior
care, she answered right away, “I
remembers always being surrounded
by the elderly, and I loved it.”
Her parents were the first to
introduce her to these special
people. They took in their great
aunt, who moved into their home, and
her grandmother eventually moved in
with them as well. Her parents were
often taking care of the elderly,
so when Kathleen saw an opportunity
to participate, she took it!
As a teenager her church held
an “Adopt a Grandparent” program,
where the elderly members of the
church, without grandchildren, could
be “adopted” by young folks! Those
teen volunteers would spend time
with their new grandparent, playing
games with them, going to dinner,
and all sorts of fun activities.
Kathleen has fond memories of her
time with them and continued to
look for opportunities to continue
her work with the elderly.
First, she worked as an aide
before she became an LPN. She worked
in the dementia unit and absolutely
loved her time there. She recalls
how kind each and every one of her
seniors were.
Eventually Kathleen moved on
to work with our very own Cambridge
Retirement Living since July of
2021 and now she’s stepped up to
the role of Director of Sales and
Marketing!
At home Kathleen enjoys
her beautiful vegetable and
herb garden. She loves the idea of
creating a sustainable home life,
and her family got together to
make jelly for the first-time last
year! Unfortunately, they were a
little too successful…she said
she now finds herself overwhelmed
with jelly! And with all sorts of
interesting flavors too, including
habanero pepper jelly!
Luckily, she and her whole
family love spicy food, and if
you’re interested in trying some
Carolina reaper jelly, Kathleen
most likely still has some stored
away! When she’s not taking care
of the garden, Kathleen takes
care of her cats and her brandnew
chickens. Though she just got
them last year she told us they’ve
already laid eggs. We could tell
on the phone that Kathleen was
particularly proud of her hens!
If she’s not chasing
chickens or gathering garden
growth, Kathleen also likes to
craft and paint in her (limited)
free time. All of this to say that
Kathleen is a grower, a provider,
and a caretaker. Qualities we find
important and admirable for our new
Director of Sales and Marketing.
We’re so grateful Kathleen
could take the time to speak with
us so we (and you!) could learn a
little bit more about this special
woman!
RESIDENT FEATURE
PIANO
DAN
AT CAMBRIDGE CORRY
In March 2022 Cambridge Corry gained a new resident, a
friend, and a brilliant musician. Thanks to Piano Dan,
the sounds of live piano fill the halls of Cambridge
Corry every day.
Dan is our Cambridge Corry Piano
Man! Piano Dan (aka Daniel Fenner) was
born and raised in Maine along with his
brother and sister. Dan was very inspired
by his father, a pastor who worked at a small
church near their home.
In sixth grade, Dan was introduced to
one of the great loves of his life. The Piano.
He began taking classes, and his love and
talent grew and grew.
In High School Dan’s father moved
their family to Massachusetts, where his
music education continued as he studied
classical music in high school. Dan proudly
graduated in 1959, but his desire for
knowledge wasn’t satisfied. He decided to
attend college in Boston at Northeastern
University and studied liberal arts, history,
and philosophy!
While attending classes, Dan still
found time for his passions. Both his
musical talent and love for the church met
in harmony as he used his skills to play in
the church service near school. Even as
a young man Dan had the responsibility
of singing in church, playing, and even
directing choirs as well!
After graduation, Dan’s heart called
him back to Maine, where he walked in
the footsteps of his father. He received
his bachelor’s degree in divinity from the
Banglor, Maine Seminary. Upon completing
his schooling, Daniel moved to New
Hampshire for a few years to use his degree
and work as a pastor.
Though he greatly enjoyed his time
at the New Hampshire church, the pull of
Maine tugged again at his heart. So, Dan
14
eturned to Dixfield Maine for several years,
working as a pastor and a piano player.
When Dan wasn’t leading church
services, you could find him performing at
various restaurants in Maine.
Dan recalls fondly, working at Jimmy’s
restaurant in Auburn, Maine. “They served
buffet dinners and I played from five to nine
on a beautiful grand piano.”
He remembers the crystal
chandeliers glistening above as he worked
his magic on the keys.
After another few years in Maine,
Daniel felt the call to move again. Only this
time it was Pennsylvania that called! Dan
moved all the way to Warren, PA and was a
pastor at Emanuel church for many years.
His sister made her way up to Canada and
had four beautiful children, while his
brother moved to Florida with his amazing
little one!
We are so blessed that we’ve had Dan as
a Cambridge Corry resident since March
of this year. He often tells us how much
he loves his room, the set up of the facility,
and the people. One of his favorite spots in
Cambridge Corry is the terrace, where he
can look out at the beautiful scenery.
He remembers the crystal chandeliers glistening
above as he worked his magic on the keys...
But his most favorite place of all is sitting at the bench in front of
Cambridge Corry’s piano and playing his music for all to hear.
It’s our favorite spot for him to be too.
Thank you for sharing your story, Piano Dan, and thank you for
sharing your music!
Education Article
Let's Talk
About Care.
When the time has come that a loved one needs more special
attention, the amount of information out there can be daunting and
frustrating. May will ask themselves, “what kind of care does my loved
one need?”
There are a lot of different care options and terminology that
may seem confusing, so we wanted to take a moment with our Spring
2022 education article to define some of the more important terms
here for you.
Personal Care:
This option of care is the kind given to seniors who need
some help with their physical movements and/or their
bodies. Personal Care Services can be some or all of the list
Personal Care is often used by older adults with chronic
illness, those who need extra care and assistance, those
with disabilities or people recovering from a surgery. Every
Cambridge Retirement Living community is licensed for
Personal Care!
Assisted Living:
When discussing Assisted living in reference to seniors,
it is defined as a “residence for older people or people
with different abilities who will need assistance with
daily routines as well as access to medical care whenever
necessary”. This is an excellent option for those who fear
their loved one is no longer safe in their own home due
to different limitations. Plus, it’s possible to choose an
assisted living facility that has professional help on hand.
Cambridge Retirement Living does not offer Assisted
Living, the key differences are regulations outlined by the
Department of Health and Human Services.
Skilled Nursing:
While some assistance with daily
tasks can be performed by a
senior aide, some tasks require
“Skilled Nursing”. This refers
to care or treatment that can
only be performed by licensed
nurses. Skilled nursing can be
offered in hospitals, assisted
living communities, Life Plan
Communities, nursing homes
and other certified locations and
is around the clock care. If your
doctor recommends this for your
loved one, inquire if the community
you’re researching offers this!
Cambridge Retirement Living is
strictly personal care, though some
locations offer an onsite LPN! LPN's
however are not there ‘around the
clock’. If the needs change for one
of our residents, Cambridge will
assist in finding a skilled nursing
facility to better facilitate your loved
one's needs.
Memory care (Sometimes called
Alzheimer’s Care) is a term often heard
by those with a loved one struggling with
some form of dementia. This particular kind
of care provides housing and long-term
care for seniors with Alzheimer's disease
and other memory issues.
Across the board a memory care facility
will offer a safe, specifically designed
environment for seniors, while focusing on
improving their quality of life. Some of those
improvements will deal with reducing
confusion and preventing wandering.
But, as your loved one is special and unique,
their requirements for care will be different
too. You can find Memory Care in assisted
living facilities, continuing care retirement
communities, and nursing homes, some
of which have a special memory care
“neighborhood” for dementia patients.
Memory Care:
One of the most difficult parts of discussing
memory care is coming to terms with the
fact that a loved one may be suffering from
a memory issue, and the severity of their
illness.
If you’re looking for more tips on how
to begin a conversation, please see our
Cambridge Times: Fall 2021 article “but
what do I say?”
Once you’re able to assess the situation, and
understand its implications, you can help
them find the quality of care they need and
deserve.
Here at Cambridge Retirement Living, several
of our communities offer Memory Care!
Mental
Spring
Cleaning
While you’re participating in the annual decluttering
of the cabinets, why not consider decluttering all of
the things you’ve accumulated in your brain?
1. Mindfulness and Meditation
Start small, just a few minutes in the morning
in a comfy corner of your house or bed. Take
the time to focus on your breathing and push
out worries or negative thoughts. There are even
free apps for your phone to aid with mindfulness
throughout the day! A mindful mental moment
can help your sleep and prepare you for whatever
life has to offer.
2. Move your Body
You don’t need to start training for a marathon to
feel the mental benefits of physical activity. But
a short walk in the morning or some stretching
at night can help relieve stress and boost
your mood! So, sneak in those short bursts of
movement and you’ll be well on your way to a
mental spring cleaning!
3. Find Gratitude
There are plenty of ways to find gratitude in your
daily life. Write 3 things a day that make you
feel gratitude, create a mantra each morning of
gratitude, call your loved ones to tell them you’re
grateful they’re yours! Sharing gratitude can
change your mental health for the better, and
make you feel more loving, patient, and positive.
24
4. Pick Up a "Put-off" Project
It doesn’t need to be rebuilding a whole deck
day one! Maybe start with hanging those photos
from your family vacation or touching up that
spot on the wall where your Christmas decor
peeled off some paint. Checking off a to-do
list is a wonderful way to promote confidence,
happiness and to quite literally spring clean a
task from your mental checklist!
5. Start Journaling
You’re not required to write a novel this spring,
although we support you! If you can sit down at
the end of your day to write about the good, the
bad (or even your 3 moments of gratitude!) You
can work through difficult daily moments, and
expound upon that which made you grateful,
giving you a safe space to express yourself and
your feelings.
In these strange times, it’s easy to hang on to
things that aren’t helping you on your journey to
your best mental health. So, give these tips a try!
