Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Free Bus To God was written
by Judkins over two-and-a-half
years. It’s about a group of
musicians who, with nowhere to
rehearse, use an old municipal
bus and drive around on
Sundays picking up their players
– and anyone else at the bus
stop.
Judkins, who is well-known as
the founder of the Coast to Coast
race, said he was excited to get his
musical on stage at last.
‘‘We tried to put it on last
year in Lyttelton and again in
prevented it happening.
‘‘Myself and the entire crew
involved are so excited to be
up a notch now,’’ he joked.
Police
inquiry into
ram raid
frustrates
business
owner
• By Emily Moorhouse
A LIQUOR store owner is
frustrated over the lack of
progress police appear to be
making into identifying the
ram-raiders who caused an
estimated $30-40,000 of damage
to his business.
Thirsty Liquor on
Centaurus Rd, Huntsbury,
was the target of a ram raid on
April 27. The offenders used a
vehicle to smash through the front
of the store but drove off empty
handed when bakery staff next
door ran out to investigate the
noise.
Liquor store owner Gagan Deep
said he would be trying to talk to
police again this week to find out
more about the investigation. He
was told two weeks ago there was
no update.
Police yesterday would not
answer specific questions from
The Star about whether the vehicle
used in the raid had been found,
or whether they had identified the
suspects.
A police spokesperson would
only say said the investigation is
“ongoing” and no arrests have
been made.
RECOGNITION: Solitude is of the Milky Way as seen from Castle Hill.
• By John Cosgrove
BEING RECOGNISED on the
global stage for his creative
skills came as a shock for
Christchurch stargazer and
astro-photographer Nick
Faulkner.
THe graphic artist/
videographer found his photo
Solitude, the Milky Way as seen
over Castle Hill, was judged one
of the top 25 in the world in an
annual competition hosted by
travel photography blog Capture
The Atlas.
THe competition showcases the
year’s best 25 photos of the Milky
Way taken during the peak of
the Milky Way season, with the
aim of inspiring and sharing the
beauty of the galaxy.
This year’s list included images
taken by photographers from 12
countries.
“I was shocked, I didn’t expect
it at all, especially with so
many competitors and so many
other people who are amazing
photographers, it’s a big shock,”
said Faulkner.
Faulkner was one of three New
Zealand photographers lauded in
the latest competition. Images by
Rachel Roberts of the West Coast
and Evan Mckay of Palmerston
North were also placed in the
top 25.
“I know of them, it’s a small
group of enthusiasts who look
to the stars with their cameras
and I’ve chatted with them many
times online,” he said.
Outside of his day-to-day
work schedule, Faulkner can be
found catching the midnight
sun in lonely quiet places in the
Southern Alps.
“We’ve got some of the best
dark skies in the world here.
“We don’t have too many big,
“In my opinion, because we’re
in the Southern Hemisphere we
have the best view of our Milky
Photography, which
specialises in landscapes and
astrophotography.
The Castle Hill photo came
about after 30 hours of waiting
and hoping.
“I had been at the site 24 hours
earlier, and had shot a panorama
of the sky and the stars.
“Later, when I was looking at
the weather forecast, I saw there
was the possibility of snow on
the way, so I rushed back and
was just lucky I guess, as the
weather cleared just in time for
me to get a clear shot with snow
on the ground, which made for a
great picture,” he said.
Using a specialist star tracker
device to keep his camera lined
up with the stars and counteract
the earth’s rotation, Faulkner
said he shot about 33 fourminute
panorama exposures.
“It’s very time-consuming, but
the results are worth it later.”
Faulkner said the attraction
of astro-photography was about
more than just being under the
stars.
“I’m usually out in the middle
of nowhere, late at night, and
although I guess it sounds
cheesy, I love being at one with
the sky, thinking about the
universe.
“It’s just incredible being out
there alone, looking up and
seeing how much you can see,”
he said.
New Coke
to hit the
shelves
in June
COCA-COLA has made it official
and announced the drink that
will replace the soon-to-bediscontinued
Coke Zero and Coke
No Sugar drinks.
The drink
will be known
as Coke Zero
Sugar. Coca-
Cola said fans
won’t be disappointed
with
the new taste.
Coca-Cola
said the product
will hit shelves
next month,
and it planned
to market the
drink by asking Kiwis if it was the
“best Coke ever”.
The confirmation comes after
signage advertising the change
started to appear in stores and
quickly found its way to social
media, where users discussed the
proposed changes.
Many wondered whether the
new product would have the
flavour of Coke Zero, Coke No
Sugar, or something entirely different.
Now Coca-Cola said it can
answer those questions, promising
the taste will be “as close as
possible to Coca-Cola Classic”.
Head of marketing for Coca-
Cola New Zealand Tracey Evans
said the move was part of the
company’s commitment to reduce
sugar through their range.
“We’re constantly evolving
with the changing nature of
New Zealanders’ tastes and
preferences, and we believe this
new recipe will be popular with
our current drinkers, as well
as Coca-Cola Classic fans who
are looking for a zero-sugar
alternative,” she said.
The new drinks will also feature
a new design, which Coca-Cola
said is being rolled out across all
Coke products.
Judkins’ show has
‘world premiere’
• From page 1
The 73-year-old is working
in collaboration with theatrical
director Hester Ullyart and his
musical co-stars are Janice Gray,
Shay Horay, Tom Trevella and
Emily Fairlight. The show’s musical
director is Adam Hattaway,
and his band is made up of Mike
Kime, Thomas Isbister and Reuben
Derrick.
Free Bus To God was a distillation
of 122 pieces that combined
20 songs, rants and raves into an
hour of madness, Judkins said.
There was humour in his show
and also sad bits, which featured
in some of the four love songs
chosen.
‘‘There are some hard characters
featured, but you can feel
comfortable with them.’’
Last week Judkins was busy
assembling a number of stage
pieces for the premiere, including
10 bus seats, a hand brake,
a steering wheel and a bus stop
sign he’s recommissioned and
worked on.
He has road-tested the show by
breaking it down into six parts to
perform at open mic sessions.
It flows well and features a broad
range of music chosen by Adam
Hattaway, he said.
Judkins intended filming the
show and has ambitions to put
it on at the 2023 Edinburgh
Fringe Festival.
‘‘I’ve got to make sure we’ve got
a winner first, but it’s an exciting
proposition and taking everyone
over to Scotland, including my
daughter, would be a blast.’’
Judkins said there was a
Commonwealth section planned
at next year’s fringe, which made
the trip even more appealing.
A full documentary of his
journey with the Free Bus To God
project is also planned.
Judkins has been a Sumner
resident for the last 36 years and
has previously published two
memoir.
‘No one is getting caught’
• From page 1
Brazen ram raids across New
Zealand have accelerated in recent
months, which has sparked
debate over whether the justice
system was tough enough on
offenders, many of whom are
young.
Last week, ram raiders struck
a dairy in Lincoln and a convenience
store in Hornby .
Deep said it was disappointing
that there appeared to be no
consequences for offenders carrying
out ram raids.
“I’m frustrated with the
system. In my eyes if they want
to do big boy crimes that should
equal a big boy punishment.”
Deep said if no one gets
caught, the ram raids will continue
happening, and questioned
whether police were doing
enough.
Deep said he was frustrated
there have been no arrests,
especially after providing CCTV
footage to police of the offenders
in the act.
“If they’re not getting anyone
it must be a lack of something
on their side. They must be busy
or something, I don’t know,” he
said.
“It’s happening every day and
no one is getting caught. There’s
should be a way to catch them.
Remote digger in cathedral a world-first
A REMOTE-operated digger
has started to clear out debris,
masonry and some significant
biohazards, as well as retrieve
heritage items, from inside
Christ Church Cathedral.
The project, which is a worldfirst,
marks the start of the major
interior clean up and is another
milestone in the cathedral’s
reinstatement journey after it
was severely damaged in the
February 2011 earthquake.
Controlled from an operations
centre outside the cathedral
using specially fitted cameras
with live stream capability, the
remote-operated digger is an innovative
digital solution to keep
workers safe.
It has also permitted the
cathedral’s interior clean-up to
begin early, allowing the project’s
critical work plan to gain about
three months.
Project director Keith Paterson
said: “Introducing a remoteoperated
digger is a safety-first
approach that solves health and
safety issues by keeping personnel
out of the building while still
getting the work done.
“A manned digger would be at
risk of falling debris or building
collapse were an earthquake to
occur at this stage of the project.”
“We don’t have line of sight of
the digger inside the cathedral,
we can only see it via screens inside
the operations centre,” said
Protranz commercial manager
Simon Gaynor.
“In preparation, we set up a
testing area that mirrors the internal
geometry of the Cathedral
and have been rehearsing over
the past few months to get comfortable
with the kit and ensure
we could proceed safely.”
Aurecon design technologist
Simon Yorke said: “The remote
camera system includes five individual
cameras fitted at different
points on the digger to relay realtime
video back to the operations
centre outside.
“A sixth camera, located inside
the cathedral, gives the operator
a bird’s eye view of the location
of the digger.”
With the safe retrieval of
heritage fabric a top priority for
the Christ Church Cathedral
Reinstatement Project, the digger
is carefully focusing on specific
areas.
“We know there are several
items of interest inside the
nave, such as the old font,” said
Paterson.
“The digger will move carefully
through the areas we think these
items might be located in the
hope we can retrieve them. Our
heritage professional will then
sift through everything collected
to find any precious items before
the rest is disposed of.”
A special enclosure has been
built on the cathedral worksite
to provide a wash-down area for
the digger and to allow skips to
be removed and re-introduced.
The remote-operated digger
will be working in the cathedral
for the next six weeks.
A CANTERBURY harness
racing trainer has been granted
interim name suppression after
his arrest on three charges
of indecently assaulting a
woman.
The man was remanded on
bail without plea to June 15 by
Judge Brian Callaghan when he
appeared in the district court
yesterday.
Duty lawyer Sabrina Forrester
asked for interim name suppression
for the man because of
the nature of the charges and
because his employment could
be in jeopardy. She said the
application could be properly
argued once the man had his
own lawyer.
The man faces six charges, all
alleging offending on November
11.
He faces two indecent assault
charges, and a third charge
of indecent assault allegedly
committed with another man,
a 29-year-old harness racing
driver. The court was told
that man was no longer in
Canterbury. His case has been
transferred to the Invercargill
District Court.
The two are also jointly
charged with assaulting the
woman. The horse trainer is
alleged to have assaulted her to
commit the indecency offence,
and to have unlawfully taken her
car.
Police prosecutor Sergeant
Paul Scott said police opposed
the name suppression being
granted because the necessary
grounds had not been
established.
McInerney
awaits sanctions
for racing injured
greyhound
ONE OF New Zealand’s leading
greyhound trainers is awaiting
sanctions for failing to provide
adequate care for a dog that raced
at Addington with an exposed
tailbone.
A Racing Integrity Board decision,
released on Monday, found
Darfield-based John McInerney
guilty of failing to comply with
Greyhound New Zealand’s
welfare code after stewards examined
Homebush Hero during
a meeting on February 22.
A RIB decision found
McInerney failed to provide
proper care for Homebush Hero
by not physically inspecting the
dog to ensure it was free from
injury prior to racing.
Homebush Hero performed
poorly in the race and a subsequent
veterinary check revealed
its tail was infected and the exposed
bone had been bandaged.
“The wound should have been
visually inspected by removing
the bandage the day prior, or on
race day, in order to meet the welfare
code,” the decision said.
McInerney denied the charge.
In 2018 McInerney was fined
$6500 by the RIB’s predecessor –
the Judicial Control Authority for
Racing – after five greyhounds
suffocated during a Cook Strait
ferry crossing.
Digital skills beneficial at any age
Becoming ‘digitally savvy’ has had many
advantages for former national ice figure
skating champion and Order of New
Zealand Merit recipient, Jeanne Begej.
Thanks to free computing courses at
Ara Connect, 75-year-old Jeanne has
significantly increased her digital skills
and is putting them to good use every day.
As President of the Canterbury
Masters Figure Skating Club, her newfound
digital confidence and enhanced
computing skills and have been
enormously beneficial. Her skills in Word,
Excel and Publisher could put many
people half her age to shame and she quite
possibly knows her way around smart
phones and apps better than most of us.
Jeanne had some computing skills prior
to attending Ara Connect but wanted
to gain more. “I’ve used computers for a
long time, but everything I’ve done on
them has been self-taught or just what I’ve
learned through my employment at the
time. And with skating administration,
I’m on the computer a lot so I just wanted
to upskill.”
Jeanne attends Ara Connect’s Woolston
hub, conveniently located just around the
Jeanne Begej
was awarded
an ONZM
in 2020 for
services to ice
figure skating.
As a leading
administrator
for the sport,
her enhanced
computing
skills have
proven very
beneficial.
corner from Christchurch’s main indoor
ice rink where she still skates. She says
the hardest part about starting was simply
walking in the door on the first day. “But
once you’ve been through that door, it’s
very easy.”
She started off with Digital Basics then
went on to courses in Word, Excel and
Publisher and is now – at the suggestion
of her tutors who were impressed with
her ability to pick things up – studying
towards a New Zealand Certificate in
Computing. “I’m up to web fundamentals
at the moment, which I just love. Learning
how to design fully functioning websites
and make PowerPoint presentations have
been highlights.”
Jeanne says the tutors at Ara Connect
are excellent – “very friendly and helpful”
– and she loves being able to study when
it suits her, often after a skating session or
a coffee with friends nearby.
She encourages anyone who wants
better digital skills to just go for it. “It’s
brilliant and the more people who know
about it the better. If you want to improve
yourself by upskilling, there’s no reason
not to do it. It’s a golden opportunity.”

SCOTT WATSON can challenge
crucial eyewitness evidence that
placed him with Ben Smart and
Olivia Hope in the Marlborough
Sounds on the night he’s alleged
to have murdered them.
The former Picton boatbuilder
is serving a life sentence, which
came with a minimum nonparole
period of 17 years, for the
1998 murders of Smart, 21, and
17-year-old Hope.
Watson has always denied
killing, or even ever meeting,
Hope and Smart after New Year’s
celebrations in a Marlborough
Sounds holiday hideaway.
Now aged 50, he has spent 24
years behind bars, having been
denied parole four times, and
is currently preparing his last
chance to overturn convictions.
Yesterday, the Court of Appeal
released a judgment that allows
a photo montage to be included
for the first time in the appeal
grounds.
A crucial part of the Crown
case against Watson was his
identification by the late Guy
Wallace, the water-taxi driver
who transported Smart, Hope,
and another man that night to a
mystery yacht.
Wallace had identified Watson
via a photographic montage during
the police investigation.
Although he rejected the
proposition that Watson was
the “third man” in evidence,
he maintained that the person
shown in photograph 3 of the
montage – which was a photo of
Watson – was the man he had
transported.
Watson’s lawyers have sought
to have the photo montage identification
evidence also included
in his last-ditch appeal and this
morning the Court of Appeal
ruled that it can in the “interests
of justice”.
“If there is one lesson from the
history of miscarriage of justice
in the context of criminal appeals,
it is that no good is done
by the procedural suppression of
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
a tenable ground of appeal which
has not yet seen the light of day
in an appellate court, while other
grounds of appeal are nonetheless
allowed to proceed,” said former
Court of Appeal president
Stephen Kos.
“As Lord Atkin once wisely
observed, ‘finality is a good
thing, but justice is a better’.”
At an unsuccessful bail hearing
in October last year, Watson’s
lawyer Nick Chisnall argued it
was in the interests of justice that
bail be granted, saying it was
a unique case given Watson’s
steadfast assertion of innocence
and the reference of a further
appeal to the Court of Appeal in
the exercise of the Royal prerogative
of mercy.
The evidence of two hairs
found on a blanket in Watson’s
boat, and said to match that of
Hope, was one of two central
planks in the Crown case at trial.
Chisnall said the Court of
Appeal now has two scientific
reports completed by a forensic
scientist, which have been peerreviewed,
and point to a lack
of due procedures to prevent
sample contamination, and
that the evidence overstated the
strength of the match.
The lawyer says that if that
evidence was inadmissible, and
should have been excluded, it
is likely a miscarriage of justice
occurred “inasmuch as the jury
would have been substantially
influenced by it”, said the Court
of Appeal decision rejecting
Watson’s bail.
Chisnall also raised the photo
montage issues at the bail hearing.
The police investigation that
led to Watson’s arrest has been
criticised in numerous newspaper
articles, documentaries
and books, particularly Trial by
Trickery by Auckland journalist
Keith Hunter, a stinging attack
on those who put Watson
away.
Watson and his supporters
– the case has long divided
public opinion – were given
fresh hope in June last year after
Justice Minister Andrew Little
announced that Governor-
General Dame Patsy Reddy
had referred his case back to
the Court of Appeal for a new
hearing.
It came after an investigation
by former High Court judge Sir
Graham Panckhurst QC raised
concerns about forensic evidence
used to convict Watson.
“The primary basis of his
application was that the DNA
evidence linking two hairs
removed from a blanket seized
from Mr Watson’s boat with
Ms Hope was unreliable,” the
Ministry of Justice said.
Three Head
Hunters
arrested
• By Kurt Bayer
THREE MEMBERS of the Head
Hunters MC gang have been
accused of hospitalising a man
while allegedly chasing a $5000
gang debt.
The three men have been jointly
charged with wounding with
intent to injure and made brief
appearances from custody at the
district court before a community
magistrate yesterday.
It is understood the charges
come after an incident yesterday
afternoon while the men allegedly
visited a man in Christchurch
who was accused of owing $5000.
More charges are expected.
Patrick Ryde Rasmussen, 38,
who also faces allegations of refusing
an officer’s request to give
a blood specimen and possession
of a meth pipe, was remanded in
custody without plea to June 13.
The two other men – aged 36
and 40 – had their cases stood
down to appear before a district
court judge yesterday afternoon.
The home addresses of Rasmussen
and the 36-year-old man
were given on court charging
documents as the Head Hunters’
city gang pad headquarters at
A MAN wearing a head lamp
raced through the darkness,
arriving as a shining light of
rescue to a driver trapped in his
vehicle.
Richard Steel of Brookside says
he is not a hero, but “just your
average Joe.”
Steel ran to the scene of a car
crash last Wednesday night last
week, from his garage where he
had been working with a head
lamp on.
“I heard the skid and the
crunch,” Steel said.
“Within minutes the
neighbours were behind me,
calling the ambos.”
He saw a four-wheel-drive
car on its driver’s side in a water
race, with an elderly man inside.
“I called out to the fellow,
he said ‘No I’m okay, just I’m
stuck’,” Steel said.
“He was coherent, we felt it
was a better idea to get him out
somewhere dry and warm.”
The driver had failed to
take a corner while travelling
through the small settlement
at the intersection of Brookside
Burnham Rd and Boundary
Creek Rd, about 11pm. His car
hit a power pole before going
into the water race.
Steel said the car was filling
up with water to the point of
submerging the right side of the
DAMAGE: Richard Steel with the vehicle that crashed into
the water race near his property. Earlier Steel rescued the
elderly driver trapped inside.
man’s body.
The obvious way to extract him
was through the front passenger
door, which was on the upside
of the car. However, this was
obstructed by the branch of an
oak tree. Steel ran back to his
house and grabbed a hand saw.
He sawed the branch off, opened
the door and climbed into the car.
The man’s right leg was trapped
under the steering wheel, but Steel
freed him by tilting the seat back a
couple of notches.
The man appeared to be in
shock and to have taken a knock
to the head.
One of the neighbours held
open the door as Steel pulled the
man from the car, then helped
him onto the bank of the water
race.
Steel believed a contributing
factor to the crash was a lack
of street lighting at the corner,
where crashes had occurred in
the past. He had complained to
the district council about two
months ago about a street light
on the corner not working.
“It’s quite a nasty corner, I
think a lack of lighting on the
corner certainly contributed.”
Leeston Volunteer Fire
Brigade deputy chief Matt Walker
said firefighters responded to the
scene, having received a report
of a trapped driver. They were
pleased to see the man had been
freed by residents, and thanked
them. The man was talking to
paramedics who were treating
him.
“The outcome was great,”
Walker said, adding the driver
had been lucky to survive.
“He hit a very large power
pole.”
Confirming the car was
not leaking any diesel or oil,
they left it in the water race.
Firefighters liaised with police
regarding salvage, which was the
responsibility of the car owner
and their insurance company.
The trapped man was taken
to Christchurch Hospital by
ambulance in a moderate
condition.
A CHANGE to the Building
Code is being proposed after the
Kaikōura earthquake resulted in
widespread damage to buildings
with hollow-core flooring.
Meanwhile, Cabinet has
agreed to a new regulatory
regime for engineers, meaning
they will have to be registered
and subject to a code of conduct.
“The collapse of the CTV
building in the 2011 Canterbury
earthquake highlighted the
risks of inexperienced engineers
working in high-risk engineering
fields and the difficulty in holding
substandard or unprofessional
engineers to account,” a
Cabinet paper from earlier this
year said.
Both the Kaikōura and Canterbury
earthquakes have led to
a seismic shift in how engineers
understand building performance,
the regulatory effects of
which are still emerging.
Hollow-core floors are a type
of pre-cast floor that were increasingly
popular from the early
1980s because they were fast to
construct and cost-effective.
They have hollow tubes in the
concrete units, making them
lighter than solid concrete floors.
The units are manufactured offsite,
then craned in to sit on the
building’s beams and walls, and
a thin mesh concrete topping is
applied over them.
However, cracks were discovered
in the floors of many
buildings across Wellington with
these type of units following the
Kaikōura earthquake.
Even the BNZ building, completed
in 2009, showed cracks,
the Ministry for Business Innovation
and Employment said in a
consultation document.
“This reaffirmed that even
modern hollow-core floor systems
are vulnerable to excessive
damage during earthquakes,
some beyond economic repair,
potentially impacting building
function and health and safety
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Moves to change code, regulate engineers
field of engineering. PHOTO: MARK MITCHELL/NZ HERALD
of occupants.”
The BNZ building has since
been demolished.
A subsequent study said the
use of hollow-core floors in new
buildings was not considered
good structural engineering
practice and was not recommended.
MBIE building performance
and engineering manager Dave
Gittings said the proposed
change will require engineers to
go over and above the existing
design method for hollow-core
flooring.
“We expect that engineers
and designers looking to use
these types of floors would be
required to provide additional
evidence (testing and analysis)
to demonstrate that the design
of the support complies with the
Building Code as an alternative
solution.”
Gittings said MBIE expected
the proposed change will
minimise the chance of excessive
damage or injury from poorly
designed hollow-core floor systems
in future earthquakes.
Engineering
New Zealand
chief executive
Dr Richard
Templer said the
organisation will
make a submission
on the proposal
once it has Richard
consulted with Templer
members.
“However, we know hollowcore
units have known fragility
issues and numerous failure
mechanisms.”
MBIE’s consultation on the
proposed amendments to the
Building Code runs until July 1,
2022.
Separate to this, the Government
is moving to regulate
engineers themselves.
Officials estimate around
38,000 engineers are not subject
to any occupational regulation.
“Without occupational regulation
and the checks and sanctions
it involves, there is a risk
that substandard engineering
work will lead to catastrophic
failures, harm to the public or
the environment, significant
economic costs, and damage to
the public’s confidence in the
engineering profession,” the
Cabinet paper said.
A new two-tier regime is being
designed that will require anyone
providing professional engineering
services to be registered. A
new regulator will be established
to oversee the regime.
Building and Construction
Minister Poto Williams said
there was lack of clarity around
who could call themselves an
engineer, making it difficult for
consumers to know whether
an engineer was qualified to
practice.
“The registration requirement
will lift the professionalism of
the engineering profession and
provide an avenue for addressing
poor behaviour and performance.”
Engineers will also be
subject to a code of conduct
and there will be new licensing
requirements to restrict practice
in high-risk engineering
disciplines.
“Officials are currently
developing a bill which I look
forward to taking to the House
later this year,” Williams said.
Town hall concert a triple celebration
A FREE concert at the town hall
on Queen’s Birthday Monday
will celebrate several special
occasions.
It will be 25 years since the
Austrian-built Rieger organ was
first opened, and it marks 25
years of service from the town
hall’s eminent organist Martin
Setchell.
Also, the Organ Curator’s
Concert 2022 joins a weekend
of celebrations across the world
in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s
Platinum Jubilee, as she becomes
the first British monarch to
complete 70 years of service.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel will be
speaking before the concert.
Setchell said the programme
will include a special arrangement
of Handel’s famous
Coronation Anthem ‘Zadok the
Priest.’
“I’ve also included two popular
works by the great French composer
Cesar Franck, to mark his
birth 200 years ago in 1822. As
a European organ the Rieger’s
tonal colours do lend themselves
to the French and German organ
repertoire.”
Setchell said it was a day of
“absolute joy and enthusiasm”
when the organ was first opened
“A team of six people took two
months to assemble it in place
and it then took three weeks to
voice and fine-tune it in May
1997. Often the team had to work
at night for silence and to allow
the normal use of the space in
the day.
“This organ was designed and
built specifically for the unique
properties of our town hall so it
‘completed’ the acoustic of the
building and is literally
an inseparable part of the
whole structure. The sound it
produces is brilliant, clear and
clean.
“I shudder to think what
might have happened had the
auditorium been bowled after
the earthquakes.”
Representatives from Rieger
were in the town hall completing
a five-week project to add 12
new ranks of pipes to the organ
and to upgrade its electronic
memory when the magnitude 6.4
earthquake struck on February
The organ suffered only
minor damage in the quake,
but because of the damage to
the town hall it took eight years
before it could be played again.
Setchell said playing the organ
was not for the faint-hearted.
“It involves the whole body and
requires perfect co-ordination
of mind, hands and feet. Now
I’m no longer teaching full-time
at the University of Canterbury
I aim for two-to-three hours of
practise every day.”
After a quarter of a century as
organ curator he has “absolutely
no plans to retire” and is looking
forward to the next 25 years.
place at the Christchurch
June 6 at 2pm. Entry is free
FOUR GENERATIONS: Conrad Eilken was one of Lincoln Primary School’s
Family proud to be
MEMORIES OF Lincoln Primary School
going back to the 1920s were recalled
this week as a local family moved into its
fourth generation of attendance.
Lincoln’s oldest living resident to have
been born in the town, 97-year-old Conrad
Eilken, was proud to see his great granddaughter,
five-year-old Iris Norton, enter
through the school gates for her first day on
Monday.
“I knew every person in every house in
Lincoln when I was a kid,” Conrad said as
he remembered his childhood days.
The school was at the same site. It had
three classrooms, with only two in use, one
for primers and one for standards.
Converting a rugby try on the school
field was by kicking the ball over a specific
section of fencing, out onto Boundary Rd
at one end or into the neighbour’s paddock
at the other end. Retrieving the ball from
the road was not a problem.
“There was not a lot of traffic in those
days. Mr Henly (a local farmer) used to go
past in his old Fiat car, and that was about
it,” Conrad said.
The road was shingle, conditioned by a
horse-drawn grader.
The town had a train station, and pupils
would catch the train to Hornby for
school dental clinics. When they were not
in the dental chair, they could be powering
the dental drill by moving one of their feet
up and down on a treadle.
Conrad recalled one occasion when
fellow pupil Rex Moir was in the dental
chair, and he was working the treadle
relatively slowly, thinking he was being
kind to his friend.
“The dentist said go faster with the
treadle, I thought I was going as fast as I
should!”
Lincoln Primary School’s roll was only
about 50. Today, it has grown to more than
600.
Iris was excited to be attending on her
first day, having been impressed by what
she saw on previous school visits.
“I like all of it,” she said when asked
what was her favourite thing about the
school.
Conrad’s son and Iris’s granddad Ian
Eilken, and Ian’s daughter and Iris’s
mother Haylie Eilken, also attended
Lincoln Primary School. They said they
were proud to see the family’s attendance
move into its fourth generation.
“It’s nice for our family, because we were
one of the first families in Lincoln,” Haylie
said.
Time for a referendum on Three Waters
A de-facto memorial
in Cathedral Square
commemorates when Nick
Smith (National) disestablished
Environment Canterbury and
David Caygill (Labour) became
commissioner of that body.
Together, they turned the Canterbury
Plains into a dairy farm
and in the process poisoned
our water. The 76 councils of
Aotearoa NZ cannot reverse this
process as they are unable raise
sufficient rates to protect our
waters.
Dame Anne Salmond believes
taxation on businesses and individuals,
who use the water, is the
only way for a clean water future.
User pays.
I am happy for Ngai Tahu to be
kaitiaki of our water, but cannot
understand why they flattened
Balmoral Forest to bring more
cows into Te Waipounamu.
Medical scientists say
Christchurch is the bowel cancer
capital of New Zealand because
of dairying nitrates leeching our
soils. If making our waters clean
for our mokopuna and their
mokopuna is the goal of Three
Waters I support it, but Labour
needs to explain the finer details
of the proposed partnership
and the Greens need to be more
courageous in advocating mixed
farming or biodynamic dairying
as a way to start cleaning up the
pollution of our waterways.
A referendum may be the only
way for an open discussion on
this important issue. – Defyd
Williams
Ilam Labour MP Sarah Pallett
is a ‘no show’ at a Three Waters
referendum discussion in Avonhead
(The Star, May 19).
Surprising you may think,
perhaps not.
I have written three times
to my area Labour MP Tracey
McLellan, to ask her to give me
her opinion about the Three
Waters proposals.
She has not responded to this.
Maybe there is a gagging order
on MP’s personal opinions about
this very important matter.
Westland Mayor Bruce Smith
hit the nail on the head months
ago when he described how this
would affect all ratepayers hard,
in the pocket. A referendum is
the only answer otherwise we
will be screwed again by this
ambitious Government. – Gary
Blair, Redcliffs
McLellan responds: My
executive assistant provided my
response to Mr Blair’s email
following a discussion with me
about what I’d like to say.
There are four staff working
with me across my Wellington
and Christchurch offices and
together we all attend to email
responses and requests. If our
email responses to date have
not given Mr Blair the specific
answers/information he sought
then I’d be only too happy to discuss
the issue further in person
or via phone, as I have done with
several constituents who wanted
to have a conversation about
Three Waters reform.
The Avonhead Community
Group has asked the prime
minister for a referendum on
the Three Waters and I agree.
Since the meeting in
Avonhead, city councillor Sam
MacDonald has received his
Official Information Act request
as to how much money has
already been spent on Three
Waters.
A whopping $34 million of
our money has been spent on
such things as travel, lawyers,
consultants, accommodation,
advertising, Scottish Water, and
more.
None of it has been spent on
any infrastructure in any part of
the country.
Housing intensification
with no off-street parking is
another issue the government
should have asked the people
about instead of dictating to
local councils, and therefore
ratepayers, about what kind of
housing we should have and
where it should be.
All this from a government
who has promised so much and
delivered so very little.
In a democracy government
is meant to represent the people,
not to dictate to the people.
It makes me wonder what kind
of government/country we are
turning into. – D Downward,
Hornby Club’s multi-million
dollar revamp complete
ADVERTORIAL
The Hornby Club has finally completed its multi-million
dollar redevelopment after three years. A part of the
community for more than 65 years, The Hornby Club has
been extensively modernised to become an inviting and
contemporary events and entertainment facility.
Tim Mathews, Hornby Club’s General Manager, says
the Club carefully walks the line between a member’s
organisation that supports the needs of its long-time
members and also its new role as a dining and events
destination for Christchurch.
“It’s very exciting to finally open the doors to our
beautiful new facility. It is a bright, light and welcoming
space that our members are thrilled with. We still offer
many of the activities that Clubs are known for like
section sports, affordable meals and a fantastic sports bar
and gaming room, but we now offer a lot for families and
for our corporate events community,” says Tim.
What Tim is referring to, is the new Chalmers
Restaurant with its colourful indoor playground and its
famous Sunday night buffet.
“We know families want somewhere to watch their kids
safely play, while they enjoy a quiet drink with friends
and a family-style meal. This is the gap that Chalmers
Restaurant fills in the local area and Christchurch dining
market,” says Tim.
In addition, the new Club includes a 450 pax Events
Centre and multiple Board Rooms, party spaces and
meeting rooms. The Club’s Corporate clients are quickly
booking available spots, a strong indication that the events
industry is starting to return under the new Orange light
setting.
“We are starting to see a solid return of corporate events
and private bookings for our state-of-the-art events space.
We can hold weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries,
conferences, expos and more. The Hornby Club really is a
super versatile venue that can host a variety of events. Our
Events team is dedicated to delivering top class events for
all our clients, whether it’s a kid’s birthday party or a threeday
conference with 500 people in attendance. We really
can do it all,” says Tim.
Life and long-term members are excited to see a new
generation of Club members joining and exploring the
section opportunities. Tim says the sections are at the
heart of Hornby Club and anyone looking for friendship
or a new hobby should explore what sections have to offer.
“We have already welcomed thousands of new members
to the Club since reopening and many are interested
in learning more about section activities. Our sections
include Fishing, Golf, Cards, Travel, Darts, Pool and
more. In fact, this year we are hosting the National Darts
Tournament and the South Island Ladies and Open Pool
Champs,” says Tim.
If you would like to join the Hornby Club, it is $34 per
year and membership comes with a food and beverage
discount. You can join at the reception; it takes less than
five minutes and can be done on the day of your visit or
restaurant booking. Members can bring in guests to dine
at the Club.
ARA INSTITUTE OF CANTERBURY
Open Day a chance to
explore new directions
For anyone contemplating
their future in the workforce,
Ara Institute of Canterbury’s
Open Day is a great
opportunity to find inspiration
and start making plans.
With more than 150 fulltime,
part-time and distance
study options on offer at Ara,
there’s potentially something
to suit everyone, from school
leavers and career changers
through to individuals seeking
to return to the workforce or those wanting
to gain more skills in their current line of
work. Options range from non-assessed
short courses through to postgraduate
diplomas and Master’s qualifications.
The event takes place on Thursday 9 June
from 3pm to 6pm at four Ara campuses:
City, Woolston, Manawa and Timaru.
The City and Timaru campuses will offer
information on all study options, while
Woolston will be the focus of trades
training and Manawa is the place to go to
see where Ara’s health-related degrees and
diplomas are taught.
Tutors and representatives from all
subject areas will be on hand to provide
information and answer questions about
study options. There will also be several
information sessions held throughout the
afternoon regarding specific study options
and enrolments can be made on the day.
Student Support staff will also be
available to talk about scholarships and
other financial assistance, learning support,
targeted support for Māori and Pacific
students and students with disabilities,
accommodation, childcare, student clubs
and more.
Campus tours are always a popular
feature of Ara’s open days. The tours explore
classrooms, workshops and learning
facilities as well as student amenities like
libraries, study spaces, cafes and gyms. At
the City campus you can also join a tour
of Otautahi House to see the modern,
apartment-style student accommodation
located just across the street from the
campus.
Study can be a big commitment – not just
for students but also for the whole whānau,
so potential students are invited to bring
parents, partners and friends along so they
can understand what’s involved and know
what support services are available.
Ara’s Open Day takes place on Thursday
9 June at the City, Woolston, Manawa and
Timaru campuses from 3pm to 6pm. A
free shuttle will operate between the City
and Manawa campuses. Further details
are available at ara.ac.nz.
LETTERS/OPINION
The Budget
It is certainly a backwards
Budget.
This is another one adding
to the many previous
ones dropping our standard
of living from no 3 in
the world to 25.
With wasteful spending,
more bureaucracy and
red tape the more we go
AFTER THE fire at the
wastewater treatment
plant, in November last
year, local residents were
pretty tolerant to start
with.
But fast forward to the
beginning of March and
after the first two months
of the year almost at lockdown
with Omnicron,
patience was wearing
thin across a wide range
of community issues, the
tolerance levels dropped
and the people’s voice
became louder.
February brought cycles
of wet weather and the
smells coming from the
wastewater plant got much
more intense as every time
it rains it makes a stinking
cocktail of putrid material
in the trickling filters.
THe stench became
unbearable, and people
demanded to know what
was being done to get rid
of the smell and relieve
their distress.
Reaching out into
the community, with
letterbox drops, drop-in
sessions and focused
meetings letting people
know what was going
on and responding to
concerns as they arose
was the obvious way to
grow communication that
brought people into the
planning.
City councillor Yani
backwards.
A good example of this is
how regulation has put up
house rents, housing costs,
and cost of living.
The real insult in the
Budget is the plan to spend
$325 million to amalgamate
state owned television
and radio.
You can guess it is for the
state to have more control.
Johanson had raised
this at meeting after
meeting, but there was
an assumption that wider
communication was
happening.
When the community
organised its own
meeting and demanded
we front, I stood up and
apologised not just for our
failure to communicate
– communication is a
two-way thing – but
for not listening to the
community.
Your frustrations
are completely
understandable and we
promised to not only
listen to your concerns
but act in new and
constructive ways to make
things better for you while
the process of removing
the burnt material and
aerating the ponds is
under way.
Today, the city council
will consider a report on
a support package which
will offer some assistance
for those most badly
affected by a stench that
has pervaded their daily
lives.
Our four partners the
I really feel sorry
for the children who
can’t get drugs to treat
their diseases, but the
Government can spend
$325 million, plus
have already spent $34
million so far on another
unnecessary spend of
Three Waters which will
be a dead duck. – Alan
Roberts, West Melton
We have now got
these are available to
those who can’t access the
Fall Zones
To all of you who have had your
trees trimmed before they became
a problem, thank you for keeping all
the families in your community warm,
happy, healthy and connected.
We know it can be a hassle, but tree branches touching the
powerlines are one of the main causes of power cuts. So, you can
be proud of the fact that you have allowed your neighbours to stay
warm, cook dinner and even charge their mobile phones. And if it’s
still on your to-do list, now’s the time to do it, as winter sets in.
You’re our priority.
Notice and Growth limit zones
B
A
Power line voltage A. Growth limit zone B. Notice zone
66,000 volts 4.0m 5.0m
33,000 volts 2.5m 3.5m
11,000 volts 1.6m 2.6m
400/230 volts 0.5m 1.5m
We’re not exaggerating.
On our network, 10-20% of all unplanned power outages are
caused by trees — including vegetation — coming into contact
with power lines. Other than this, fire damage to property from
branches sparking in dry conditions and serious injury from
electrocution from contact with trees touching power lines are
also possible consequences of not maintaining your trees.
How close is too close?
While most damage is caused by trees falling on power lines,
significant risk exists from trees merely touching them. This risk
increases the higher the voltage of the power line.
The minimum distances that must be maintained between trees
and power lines, as defined in the Electricity (Hazards from
Trees) Regulations 2003, are outlined in the diagrams above.
All vegetation should be kept out of the growth limit zone and
preferably the notice zone.
Sometimes it may not be practical to have a tree trimmed at the
rate at which it grows and unfortunately, this means it may need
to be removed. Other situations may require trees to be removed,
most commonly when they are at a high risk of falling due to
disease or adverse weather events.
Where do I start?
Before you begin, remember to keep yourself, and those around
you, safe. We recognise that not everyone is experienced in tree
trimming and are happy to advise you on what to do. We can arrange
for trees near power lines to be trimmed at your expense, however
we recommend you hire professionals to safely carry out the work.
If you or someone working for you intends to work within four
metres of power lines, a close approach consent is required from
Orion before you start. As a tree owner, you may be liable for any
damage caused by carrying out trimming or felling of trees.
Will I be fined if I don’t comply?
If a cut or trim notice is given to you and you fail to have the tree
trimmed and/or advise us of the time and location of the trim
without a reasonable excuse, this is an offence. This will make you
liable for a fine not exceeding $10,000. If the offence continues,
you will be liable for a further fine of not more than $500 for every
day or part day during which the offence continues.
More info can be found on our website and if
you have any questions or notice any trees
touching power lines in your area, please call
us on 03 363 9898 or 0800 363 9898.
LANDSCAPING IS a wonderful
pastime enjoyed by many.
It provides a natural beauty
and needs no ornaments or other
attractive items to help achieve its
magnificence.
What it does need, however, is
a little tender loving care from
you and great ideas to keep the
landscape design ever changing
and up to date.
Landscape design is an art that
not only gives you the freedom to
express yourself, but also makes
your home more beautiful and
inviting.
There are many methods of
CORIANDER IS a love it or hate
it type of plant, it divides people.
It can also be quite a tricky herb
to grow as it loves to bolt (head
to seed), which probably doesn’t
help its reputation with its detractors.
Here are some tips for successful
coriander growing.
Firstly, plant it now. While you
can grow coriander for most of
the year, during autumn and
winter when the weather is cooler,
is the perfect time to plant –
especially if you find it difficult
to grow. The steady, cool weather
will prevent it from bolting.
landscape design to explore. You
can trim your hedges or bushes
in a decorative manner. For
instance, you may want to cut
every other hedge a foot shorter
than the next to produce a rolling
effect.
You could also put a large
decorative fountain in the middle
of your yard. This is a costly
option but, if you can afford it,
looks gorgeous.
If you are considering
landscape design, or have already
dabbled in it a bit, you know the
importance of working with an
experienced landscaper.
Coriander will grow well in a
pot or in the garden. But if you
do plant in a pot make sure it’s a
deep one and pour in some good
quality potting mix.
If you’re growing in the garden,
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Enjoy landscaping
Coriander – love it or hate it
at this time of the year look for
somewhere with full sun. Coriander
doesn’t like damp or humid
conditions. Next ensure the soil
is aerated and free-draining by
digging over the soil and even dig
in some potting mix or compost if
required.
Next, mound up the soil and
plant a seedling on top – this
will help ensure the soil is freedraining.
Give it a water and then
regularly water it in the morning.
This will allow the water to dry
off during the day and prevent
disease.
Native trees are a
long-term investment
NOW IS THE time to plant
native trees and shrubs.
Many people think natives can
only be grown when you have
lots of space. But there are lots
of low growing native plants that
look lovely in a smaller garden
– such as pūrei (carex), hibiscus
and hebe. Other native plants
such as kōhūhū (pittosporum
tenuifoliam) and akeake can
make nice shelter belts or hedges.
You can even plant tī kouka
(cabbage tree) and kānuka plants
into pots and placed them at the
entrance to your property. Pots
can restrict the roots of trees and
in a way create a ‘bonsai’ effect
so they don’t grow very tall. Bees
like kānuka, which is great for
pollinating vegetable gardens.
If you’re thinking about planting
natives, or adding to your
A TALENTED Christchurch boxer
is hoping his plans to fight for New
Zealand overseas this year do not
cop a knockout blow, financially.
Hamuera Tainui, a four-time
national amateur champion, has
tournaments in Australia and Serbia
on the cards to prepare for the
pinnacle – the World Youth Boxing
Champions in La Nucia, Spain,
from November 1.
However, the 17-year-old requires
about $40,000 to undertake preparation
which includes competing at the
Australian Golden Gloves in Brisbane
in August and the Serbian Youth
Golden Gloves later that month.
Ideally, Woolston Boxing Clubbased
Tainui, who usually fights
in the 67kg division, will be able to
spend six months devoted to training
for the world’s premier event for
young fighters.
Tainui hopes to have two support
crew in his entourage, coach
Holly Sullivan and assistant Trevor
Swainson.
“It’s absolutely unreal,” said Sullivan,
after Boxing New Zealand confirmed
Tainui’s selection for Spain.
“It’s going to be a journey. We are
asking everyone and anyone for any
support.’’
However, financial assistance was
required to cover flights and accommodation,
tournament entry fees,
team uniforms plus training and
preparation requirements.
“Our goal is to create opportunities
that elevate people both in and
out of the rings, helping them reach
their full potential,” Sullivan said.
“It’s important for us to give these
talented athletes the opportunities
they deserve. The first step is
reducing the financial barriers to
participation.”
United’s storming wins make statement
• By Chris Barclay
THE BALANCE of power
among Mainland Football’s
top-tier clubs might be tilting
from Cashmere Technical after
Christchurch United inflicted
a rare, and emphatic, defeat to
regain leadership of the Southern
League.
United’s first campaign under
former Wellington Phoenix
talisman Paul Ifill cleared its first
major obstacle in style, with a resounding
4-1 victory launching
the eighth round of the competition
under lights last Friday.
After a goalless first half,
unbeaten United opened the
scoring through captain Matt
Todd-Smith in the 53rd minute.
Sanni Issa then nailed a brace
either side of Fraser Angus
providing Cashmere Technical’s
only response.
Substitute Eddie Wilkinson
iced the triumph two minutes
from the end of regulation at the
Christchurch Football Centre.
The win was believed to be
Christchurch United’s first
over Cashmere Technical since
they upset the city’s dominant
footballing force during the 2019
Chatham Cup.
United indicated they would
not be overawed by the reigning
Mainland Football premiership
winners, plus Chatham Cup and
English Cup holders, when they
shared a 10-goal friendly with
Cashmere Technical in February.
And now this three-goal margin
equates to a statement win
for United, who welcomed Ifill as
coach and occasional substitute
during the off-season.
The club is now six points
clear and on course to secure
one of two available places in
the National League, alongside
Cashmere Technical, who should
get back on track when they host
Dunedin City Royals on Saturday.
Ferrymead Bays and Coastal
Spirit are the next best Christchurch
clubs in fifth and sixth
respectively behind third-placed
Nelson Suburbs and Dunedin
City Royals.
Selwyn United props up the
10-team ladder, a point adrift of
Nomads United.
Rugby
Lincoln University are in the
unfamiliar position of experiencing
a sequence of losses while
New Brighton and High School
Old Boys are currently the significant
improvers compared to
last season’s Christchurch Metro
Cup competition.
Sydenham remain the only
unbeaten club after seven rounds
of this campaign, following a 45-
22 victory over winless Burnside,
with New Brighton the closest
challengers after they downed
University to enhance their
record to six wins and a solitary
defeat.
New Brighton were third
from bottom in 2021 and they
have already exceeded last year’s
number of wins; HSOB have also
matched their five successes last
season as they prepare for an
eighth-round assignment with a
in-form Linwood.
Lincoln University led the
table after four straight wins
but they have subsequently lost
to Linwood, New Brighton and
reigning champions Marist
Albion to slip to sixth on the
standings.
However, they appear
equipped to arrest that slide
when hosting 10th-placed Sumner
on Saturday.
New Brighton face a tough
test against Marist Albion while
HSOB and Linwood meet in the
other plumb tie of the schedule
between the fourth and fifthranked
sides.
Rugby League
Canterbury Rugby League
premiers Hornby and last year’s
beaten semi-finalists Halswell
meet in Saturday’s tantalising
clash of the round, where the
Panthers will strive to continue
their recovery from a surprisingly
poor start to their title defence.
matches Hornby have rebounded
to an extent, though the secondplaced
Hornets present a daunting
task at Halswell Domain.
The Panthers lost to the Northern
Bulldogs, leaders Linwood
and the Eastern Eagles before
morale boosting wins over the
Celebration Lions and Riccarton,
44-16 last weekend.
A one-point opening round
loss to Linwood is the only
blemish on Halswell’s record,
while the Keas are yet to endure
another close encounter as the
competition’s only unbeaten side.
They continued their domination
with a 30-16 victory over
the Eastern Eagles and last year’s
runners-up will be favoured
to rack up another win, at the
struggling Celebration Lions expense,
who had to default against
Halswell last weekend.
Linwood built an 18-point
buffer before the Eagles responded
with three tries before
the Keas reestablished their
momentum.
Papanui remain at the bottom
of the table after copping an 82-0
Big Skoda Superb goes hybrid
NEW ZEALAND’S Skoda
distributor must be well pleased,
and so must its dealers.
Not only did Skoda secure a
big Corporate Cab order with
the Superb, but that same car
is also a go-to model for New
Zealand Police. That along with a
clever marketing and advertising
campaign, Skoda is travelling very
well in New Zealand at present.
The Superb spearheads the
company’s line-up here and
that is no surprise, it’s long been
a desirable large car with its
cavernous interior space and
desirable engineering elements –
clever engines and transmissions.
None of that is really a surprise,
the Czech Republic manufacturer
is partnered with Volkswagen, and
much of the product that comes
from the factories has elements that
cross-pollinate other VW product.
Given its alignment to
Volkswagen, it’s no surprise that
a view towards electric vehicles is
arriving fast and the Superb has
just landed in New Zealand with
a plug-in hybrid option – the iV –
joined as well with Octavia iV and,
soon to follow, the fully electric
Enyaq.
Let’s make it clear, the Superb
iV is not a full EV, it has a petrol
engine and that is the catalyst of
the hybrid system, it charges the
batteries and works in conjunction
with an electric motor to provide
drive. Not only are you getting a
cracker of a car, but you are also
doing something that can only be
beneficial to the environment.
The Superb iV lands here from
$72,990 in standard form, a highspec
Sportline adds $4k, that makes
it easily qualify for the clean car
rebate, a discount of $5750 comes
off the top end, the evaluation car
was actually a wagon and that adds
$3000 in each specification, but
it would be the car for me, I like
wagons and the Superb in this form
really appeals.
Interestingly, the price of the iV
compares well to its petrol engineonly
counterparts, the standard
Superb lists from $56,990 which
to me is also very good value.
There are a host of Superb models
– sedan, wagon and Scout – but
unfortunately the diesel option in
Superb is no longer with us.
That aside, the iV is powered
by a 1395cc, four-cylinder engine
that is both turbocharged and
supercharged. The twincharger
system is more than adequate
when you take into account
that it is constantly working
alongside an electric motor. Skoda
rates the Superb iV with a total
power package of 160kW and
up to 400Nm. The latter figure is
available from 1550rpm.
As with all hybrid systems, the
manufacturing objective is to
incorporate fuel economy into
the design. The TSi system is
long revered for thrifty use of
SLEEK: The Skoda Superb is available in wagon or sedan
form. Both have dynamic looks.
SKODA SUPERB iV: Large wagon with huge space and hybrid power.
fuel, and when you add the
benefits of electric propulsion it
merely sips fuel. Skoda rates the iV
in hybrid mode with an amazing
1.6-litre per 100km combined cycle
average.
Bear in mind that is at best
possible usage, even driving with
fuel economy in mind I couldn’t
replicate those figures, but I did
take the evaluation car back to the
dealership with the readout listing
at 6.6l/100km after four days in
my care, which included some
inner-city stop-start travel and my
usual highway run. At 100km/h on
the open road the instantaneous
readout sits at 4.4l/100km with the
engine loping over at just 2000rpm.
Other figures of relative
importance are a smart 7.8sec
standstill to 100km/h acceleration
time, and 7sec for a highway
overtake (80-120km/h). These all
make for good reading.
Drive is channelled through
a direct shift transmission, it’s a
driveline that doesn’t work much
differently than other vehicles from
the VW group and there’s nothing
wrong with that, it is fluid, smooth
and doesn’t need any kind of
special driving technique.
Incorporated into the system
are traditional drive mode options
– economy, sport and normal,
and if you want to manipulate the
gearing, that can be done through
steering wheel-mounted paddles.
Each of the drive modes work
• Price – Skoda Superb iV,
$79,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4862mm; width, 2031mm;
height, 1477mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1395cc, 160kW,
400Nm, direct shift
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 7.8sec
• Fuel usage – 1.6/100km
quite differently, it is a complex
system, but in essence it operates
with the driver completely unaware
of its operation.
Put simply, when using e-mode
the Superb will drive purely on
electricity up to a distance of
62km. In sport mode, both the
electric motor and petrol engine
are engaged to provide a more
dynamic feel. Hybrid-mode
switches between both the motor
and engine depending on need.
Along with all the high-tech
components, it must also be
remembered that comfort and
convenience has been a high
manufacturing priority, and
the ride quality of the Superb is
unsurpassed.
With its length of nearly 4.9m
the Superb is a big car but it doesn’t
feel like it is, it has light steering
feel and there’s no suggestion of
bulk. I took the test car through
some tight twists and turns heading
west towards our high country and
felt at ease when the tricky stuff was
presented.
It must be said the Superb in this
form doesn’t get the four-wheeldrive
system prolific through the
VW group, the hybrid system
driving to the front wheels only.
Over the years I’ve made no
secret of my affection for the
traditional station wagon. Sadly, it’s
a market that has struggled against
the popularity of the sport utility
vehicle, nevertheless, it was great
to have a wagon in my care for a
week.
As part of an organisational
process in the Kiddie-family
garage I took some clean debris to
the EcoDrop transfer station and
returned via Mitre 10 with some
shelving that was easily swallowed
under the liftback. That area is
enormous and also emphasises
the spaciousness of the Superb.
It’s no wonder that it has found
favour in an area that has long been
dominated by Holden.
Skoda have capitalised on
its demise, and I’m sure for all
those passengers who travel by
Corporate Cabs to the airport,
or by misfortune those who find
themselves in the rear of a police
car, will appreciate that space
equals comfort, and the Superb,
even in hybrid form, has that in
abundance.
Getting the most out
of show home visits
Once you’ve decided to build a new home,
there is nothing more exciting than visiting
local show homes. These newly built homes
are open to the public to show off the
company’s design skills and craftsmanship.
There is much to think about when
building a new home and with so many
building companies on the market, you will
find that each show home has something
different to offer.
So how do you make the most out of your
show home visits? Check out our six tips
below to help you …
1. Before you head out to visit show homes,
make a list of the must-haves you want to
have in your new home i.e. four bedrooms,
two bathrooms, separate lounge, open plan
living, etc. However, it does also pay to keep
your mind and options open – as you see and
discover the different design elements that
are available, you may find you change your
mind – not once but several times.
2. When you get to the show home, take
note of how the home looks from the street
– first impressions count; consider how it sits
on the section and whether it has that instant
wow factor.
3. When you meet the sales person, ask
for a brochure about the home and as you
wander through take note of how it makes
you feel and which areas are getting the sun;
look at the quality of workmanship and
finishing details. Consider these questions as
you walk through – does the floorplan flow
easily; is there enough storage space, is the
kitchen big enough; can you close off living
spaces; and if you have a growing family, are
throughout
the bathrooms big
Christchurch
enough and functional.
Can see yourself living there, does the overall
design suit your lifestyle and that of your
family?
4. Use your phone to take photos of areas
and design elements that you like i.e. roof
style, windows, exterior cladding, kitchen,
laundry, bathroom. etc. Take closeups of
fixtures and fittings i.e. tapware, flooring,
door handles – anything that appeals to you.
5. Before you leave find out the costs
involved – what is included and what isn’t;
are you purchasing a build only or a land and
home package; and whether elements of the
design can be changed to suit your needs –
these may come at an extra cost so be aware
of this before you decide you start making
drastic changes to the original plan.
6. Finally rate your experience – was the
salesperson friendly and approachable; did
all your questions get answered or offered
to be followed up; were you given a good
understanding of the company’s building
process; and is the company reputable and
longstanding?
These are just a few things to think about
as you visit each show home. Above all, you
will want to choose a company that offers
you a quality building option that you can
afford, a home you absolutely love, and one
that is reputable, has a professional approach,
and you are happy to invest with.
PERCHED above the Lyttelton Township,
The Top Club has some of the best harbour
views in Lyttelton, evident the minute you
step a foot inside.
A modern, open plan bar drops down to
a dining area with floor to ceiling windows
providing a panoramic view where both
diners and drinkers enjoy the stunning
outlook and warm and friendly
atmosphere.
The club also offers some of the best
food in Lyttelton with Emma Palaamo
running the kitchen.
Emma has a solid background in
hospitality. She trained and worked
alongside her parents Bev and Steve
Palaamo who are highly respected caterers
on the local club circuit.
"Cooking's in my blood and I love being
in the kitchen,"said Emma. “I took over the

club kitchen at the start of the year and the
reaction to my menu and cooking has been
amazing. Tables have been filling fast and
we have a lot of repeat diners."
Emma attributes the kitchen's popularity
to streamlining the menu to provide a
selection to satisfy everyone.
“I’ve listened to what they want and
have taken heed by bringing back the old
with new. We're family friendly with
regular specials and a kid's menu.”
Emma's Kitchen in The Lyttelton Top
Club is open Wednesday 4.00-7.30pm,
Thursday 4.00-8.00pm, Friday 4.00-
8.30pm, Saturday 2.00-8.30pm, and Sunday
