But because they aren’t built tolast and quickly go out of style, these clothesare quickly discarded, piling up in landfills.Although consumers might enjoy havinginexpensive and stylish clothes,fast fashion has been criticized forits environmental and ethical impact.Textile WasteWe’re more likely to throw away cheap,trendy clothes than more expensive, timelesspieces. The average American throwsaway about 70 pounds of clothing and othertextiles each year, according to the Councilfor Textile Recycling.2 The equivalent ofone garbage truck of clothes is dumped inlandfills or burned every second in the U.S.CO2 EmissionsIn order to mass produce so many inexpensivegarments so quickly, items often aren’tethically made. Factories are often sweatshopswhere laborers work in unsafe conditionsfor low wages and long hours. In manycases, children are employed and basic humanrights are violated, reports EcoWatch.Studies have shown the plastic fibers canend up in the stomachs of marine animals,including some that wind up as seafood.Unsafe Labor ConditionsBesides the sheer bulk of waste in landfills,fast fashion has an impact on the environmentthrough carbon emissions. The fashionindustry is responsible for 10% of global CO2emissions each year, according to the EllenMacArthur Foundation.That’s more than allinternational flights and maritime shippingcombined. Researchers project that if thingsdon’t change, by 2050 the fashion industry willuse up a quarter of the world’s carbon budget.Workers can be exposed to caustic chemicalsand dyes and may work in dangeroussituations where safety may not be a concern. 11
