Events get a boost
New Democrat MLA Brittny Anderson says that people will
be able to enjoy more live music events and performances this
year thanks to the BC New Democrat government’s continued
support of artists and the live music sector throughout BC.
“Most of us feel so fortunate to have such a vibrant music and
arts scene here in the Kootenays, and so many of us craved live
music during the pandemic. I know folks are looking forward
to getting back to our favourite music venues and festivals!” said
Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. “Our government
knows how much these events mean to people, and how much
we’ve been missing them, and this funding will help make sure
that we can all get back to enjoying amazing times together.”

NOW SHOWING AT
GEAR by Bettina Matzkuhn
Textile artist Bettina Matzkuhn
examines the human presence in
the backcountry by deconstructing
outdoor gear and reconstructing it
with the addition of embroidered
imagery. Gear features interactive
pieces revealing the artist’s response
to the role of outdoor gear in the
consumption, promotion and
diminishment of natural spaces.

GALLERIES
Gallery hours Thursday – Sunday 1 – 4pm
447 A Avenue Kaslo, BC • 250-353-2661
www.thelangham.ca • langham@netidea.com
Showing from May 13th till July 17th
In her new body of work Violent
Femme, Nelson artist Branda
Christoffersen explores her path
through womanhood. Using line and
color she investigates love, rejection,
and becoming a mother.
Please observe COVID protocols while visiting the galleries.
The Kootenays’ Triple Threat!
is the BEST! $ 249
Now in stock and on display!
Region receiving funding include the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Society,
Shambhala Music Festival Ltd., Bloom Nightclub Inc., and the
Langham Cultural Society.
The funding comes from an additional $2.5 million investment
from the BC New Democrat government to Amplify BC
to support music companies and live operations. Amplify BC
is British Columbia’s music fund delivered through Creative
BC, the Province’s lead agency for creative sector funding and
development.
This $2.5 million supplement to the $22.5 million already
being delivered over three years demonstrates our government’s
recognition of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
on live music performances and the music industry, and the
sacrifices that were made to keep us safe.

Having worked in the UK, New Zealand,
Norway, and even the “Valley of Giants” in
Australia, I came to Canada. After working
for a year at the coast, with some of
the largest trees in Canada, I moved to
the Nelson area. I started this business
and found hard-working like-minded
professionals to join me.
We know trees.
We provide:
• FireSmart property management
• experienced climbing arborists
• tree pruning, fruit bearing and others
• hedge maintenance
• technical tree removal
• crane assisted removals
• emergency work, 24/7 call-outs
• post storm cleanup work
• wood chipper and dump truck
We are insured, WorksafeBC registered

SUDOKU
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken
down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the
numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box.
Each number can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in which the
numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

group.
The exhibition features Garden-Smith’s pigment stained
gelatin lamp shades, In A Hare’s Form (2021), and a new
site-specific gelatin installation that will shift throughout
the exhibition’s duration. Through a form of alchemy, Garden-Smith
transforms plant materials from detritus to sculptural
blossoms. Theresa Wang describes the decorative light
fixtures as suspending “various dried and pressed flora collected
on the artist’s walks over the seasons, bringing (once)
living things into the living milieu. In this way, these works
consider ornamentation as not only a way to confound the
passage of time, but also as a record of the durational and
interspatial acts of foraging, gathering, and conserving.”

T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss will develop an herbarium during
their time in the region. The herbarium will feature plant matter
Indigenous to the region, as well as printed takeaways for
visitors to create their own herbarium at home. In addition,
Wyss transforms the small garden bed outside Oxygen’s facility,
extending the exhibition outdoors.
In writing about Wyss’s permaculture space in x̱ aw̓ s
shew̓ áy̓ New Growth (2019), Oscar Domingo Rajme observes
that it “is a space where alternative forms of working and
being together are not only made possible through the garden’s
intention of being a communal place, but especially
through what its existence implies. For a moment, it has broken
the city’s colonial architectural desire to normalize the
theft of land and to erase the histories and traditions of the
Coast Salish peoples.”
dig a hole in the garden also features a temporary library in
the gallery space featuring texts that will be discussed through
a reading group that will meet all five Wednesdays throughout
the exhibition. Notes from the reading group discussions, as
well as access to readings will be available on Oxygen’s website
and on site.
The exhibition is co-curated by Greta Hamilton and Julia
Prudhomme, and will be on view from 11 June – 16 July 2022.
Oxygen Art Centre is an artist-run centre located at #3-320
Vernon Street, Nelson, BC via alleyway entrance. The exhibition
will be open to the public Wednesdays to Saturdays from
1 to 5 pm. Prior to your visit please review Oxygen’s COVID-
19 prevention protocols on their website.

Expect high lake levels
FortisBC Inc (FortisBC) and the Regional District of Central
Kootenay (RDCK) are notifying property owners along
Kootenay Lake that due to above normal snowpack and
delayed melt, there is an increased possibility that flooding
could occur during late May or early June if temperatures rise
substantially.
As of May 19, the lake level at Queen’s Bay was 1743.52
feet. It’s expected to rise two to three feet over the next week.
Although lake levels are forecasted to remain below the 1752
feet flood level, the lake is subject to large natural inflows of
water as a result of melting snow pack and precipitation. This
means conditions could change suddenly over the next few
weeks.
Power generation facilities like FortisBC’s Corra Linn Dam
play a key role in managing lake levels. Since the beginning
of March, FortisBC has discharged the maximum amount
of water from Corra Linn. However, at this time, Grohman
Narrows, a natural geological formation located upstream of
Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort is hiring!

Opioid use treatment available at 3 West Kootenay hospitals
Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital
emergency department nurses: Jane Carlton,
Tamara Roscoe, Teresa Myers,
and Emily Larochelle.
Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a treatable
medical condition. And, yet, many
people living with OUD don’t have a
regular care provider who can help connect
them to medication. For many, their
first exposure to treatment is through an
emergency department (ED).
Given the increasing number of toxic
drug deaths across BC – 2,224 in 2021
according to the BC Coroner’s Service
– Interior Health’s Emergency Services
and Mental Health and Substance Use
networks partnered in June 2021 to
connect people experiencing opioid use
disorder with Suboxone in emergency
departments. Suboxone is an Opioid
Agonist Treatment (OAT) medication
used to treat OUD.
The project includes offering Suboxone
“to-go packs” to start patients at
home and a new urgent referral process
to connect people to ongoing OAT in
the community.
In May, Suboxone in the ED was
introduced in hospitals throughout the
West Kootenay, including the Kootenay
Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail,
the Castlegar and District Community
Health Centre, and the Kootenay Lake
Hospital in Nelson. All sites will be
included by September 2022.
Having Suboxone available in EDs
has decreased barriers to accessing OAT
in communities by providing frontline
nurses and physicians with the necessary
training to prescribe the treatment, and
by helping educate patients on how to
start it themselves at home.

Kootenay Lake Levels
Special Alert May 25, 2022
FortisBC is notifying customers that due to above normal snowpack
and delayed melt, there is an increased possibility that flooding could
occur during late May or early June if temperatures rise substantially.
Currently, Kootenay Lake levels are forecasted to remain below 1752 ft.
at Queen’s Bay; however, conditions could change rapidly. Lake levels
are predominately driven by natural inflows as a result of melting snow
pack and precipitation and are subject to sudden, large increases.
Queen’s Bay:
Nelson:
Present level: 1744.72 ft
7 day forecast: Up 3 to 3.5 feet
2021 peak: 1747.33 ft / 2020 peak: 1750.09 ft
Present level: 1743.10 ft
7 day forecast: Up 3 to 3.5 feet
For more information on flood preparedness and emergencies
in your area, visit rdck.ca/eocinfo or pep.bc.ca, or call
1-800-663-3456. To be notified by telephone or email about
large or unusual changes to Kootenay Lake water levels,

Elder Abuse Awareness
Day – June 15
On June 15 the Nelson Community
Response Network (CRN) and the Nelson
Elder Abuse Prevention Program (EAPP) are
once again marking the United Nations World
Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
Elder abuse and neglect are disturbing but
often hidden and unreported events. Lack of
recognition of the abuse, shame at being taken
advantage of, and complicated interpersonal
dynamics contribute to under reporting and
lack of action against perpetrators.
Recently an excellent resource has come
to our attention. The Canadian Centre for
Elder Law has produced a summary of the
Federal Criminal Code listings of chargeable
offences for physical abuse, some forms of
psychological abuse, sexual abuse, financial
abuse and criminal negligence (ccelderlaw.
ca/federal-laws/).
The chart above
helps to clarify
what are chargeable
offences.
An older person
may be hesitant to
pursue prosecution
because the perpetrator
is someone
they are reliant
on. They may have
health, memory
or communication
problems that complicate
their ability
to participate in court proceedings. Rather
than a criminal trial a victim of abuse may
consider requesting the police and Crown
Counsel pursue a Peace Bond.
Please remember all elder abuse is wrong
even if it is
not a criminal
offence. There
are some supports
to help
an individual
deal with an
abuser.
Financial
abuse
is the most
commonly
reported form
of elder abuse.
Seniors may
be pressured to
share income, banking information, housing
or to change their Will or other legal documents.
Fraud by computer, a sales person or
the misuses of a Power of Attorney (POA) are
also common.
Being informed of the possible forms of
abuse and having a variety of networks to
consult, if you are concerned for yourself or
others are the best source of prevention and
early intervention.
If you are concerned about possible abuse
do not hesitate to reach out to trusted family
members, your bank, friends, church, lawyer
or the police.
If you wish to learn more about the prevention
of abuse or neglect and planning for your
future please consult with:

New funding for local libraries
New Democrat MLA Brittny Anderson says that people will see
improvements at their local public libraries, including expanded
digital collections and internet access, upgraded spaces and programming,
and improved air circulation thanks to new COVID-
19 relief and recovery funding for libraries.
“Libraries are community hubs,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA
for Nelson-Creston. “They are not only a place we can go to
for books to learn or indulge in amazing stories, but they also
offer invaluable resources like children’s programs, and access to
technology like computers and printers. This funding will help
libraries in the Kootenays to continue to be important gateways
to knowledge and culture.”
Public libraries in the Kootenay Region are receiving funding
as follows:
Creston Public Library - $38,970.57
Salmo Public Library - $29,637.85
Kaslo & District Public Library - $28,690.12
Nelson Municipal Library - $42,038.56
The 2022 Hyundai TUCSON
A total of $8 million in COVID-19 relief and recovery funding
is being distributed between 71 public libraries, six library federations
and three library service partners in B.C. Libraries can use
this new funding to enhance services for people and fill gaps created
by the pandemic. This may include adapting their physical
spaces, delivering computer and virtual technology training, and
developing programs that help people build deeper social and
community connections.
This investment builds on a one-time $3 million investment
in public libraries in 2020, to expand digital services and computer
access during the pandemic. Government also provides
$14 million in annual funding toward operating costs at B.C.’s
public libraries.

Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment?
Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km
that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and
hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional performing
soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination.
Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping
process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good
source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.

State of the snowpack
Data shows that on May 15, 2022, the snow pack throughout
British Columbia was well above normal, ranging from 96 to
152% of normal. The West Kootenay (128%) and East Kootenay
(124%) are above normal. Stations in the northern sections of the
Kootenays are well above normal and may reach record values
for June 1st. In an average year, approximately 18% of the annual
BC snow pack has melted by May 15th (according to data from
automated snow weather stations). Due to the persistent cool
temperatures delaying snowmelt and storm events contributing
additional snow at higher elevations, it is estimated that only 2.6%
of the total snow has melted so far this year
Snow pack is only one factor related to freshet flood risk.
Weather conditions from May through July will determine the
timing, magnitude, and rate of snowmelt, where heavy rainfall
events can exacerbate snowmelt driven flows.
