NURSES BRAVE THE SHAVE

FOR COLLEAGUE

Two of the Katharine House Nursing Team are braving

the shave in support of a colleague and to raise funds

for Katharine House and Cancer Research UK.

Jane Reeves Ford and Jenny Cowley will be shaving their

heads on 1 June in support of Julia Gartside-Bentley who

also works at Katharine House as Discharge Liaison Nurse.

Julia who has worked at the hospice since 2003 was

diagnosed with cancer in January 2020 and has lost her hair

due to several rounds of chemotherapy.

Julia says … I have known Jane and Jenny as wonderful

colleagues and friends since they started working at the

hospice. Working alongside we have laughed, cried and

supported each other through some very difficult times

and always been there, in and out of work. I have been very

emotional thinking what they are doing to support me and

so many others, as well as raising awareness and much

needed funds for two charities very close to mine and my

families hearts.

Jane says … We are both a little apprehensive but to be

honest, more excited at the prospect of no lengthy hair

styling or bad hair days! On a more serious note our lovely

friend and colleague Julia has no choice as her hair was

just taken away … during another round of chemotherapy.

Hair is a woman’s crowning glory and for many of us helps

determine who we

are. I cannot imagine

having that taken away

without choice. If by doing

this challenge we can help

support the emotional and

psychological side to this horrible

disease, and raise very much needed funds

both charities, then it is a very small price to pay.

Romeo and Juliet

AT STAFFORD CASTLE THIS SUMMER!

The grounds of Stafford Castle are being

transformed into Renaissance Italy for this year’s

landmark Stafford Shakespeare production,

ROMEO + JULIET.

A huge 25-metre stage is being built, complete with

trapdoors, moving sets and hidden entrances for the

30th anniversary production.

A new seating layout will bring the audience closer

than ever to the action, which takes place between

warring families in Verona.

Almost 6,000 tickets have already been snapped

up for the run from June 24 to July 9, with several

performances already sold out.

(better known as Doreen Tipton) as The Nurse.

always so much work that goes into designing and

building the set, but this one – designed by awardwinning

Morgan Brind - is at a new level.

‘It will surprise people throughout the play as the

tragic love story unfolds and new elements are

and it all adds to the occasion.

‘It’s the 30th anniversary production and we want to

make sure that the whole experience is worthy of

such a landmark occasion.

‘Having missed two years due to Covid, we’ve

taken the opportunity to review and reboot the

Stafford Shakespeare production, with a host of

improvements on stage and off.

‘Working with Boutique Events, the outside events

arm of The Post House Bar and Grill, the bar and

catering options are better than they have ever been

and we’re excited to see people trying out something

completely different up at the castle this year.’

TIM SAUNDERS & FAMILY VISIT

Houghton Lodge and Gardens, Stockbridge

For parents, going away for just 24 hours can feel

more of an ordeal than a holiday. However, on the

build up to our night away at Houghton Lodge and

Gardens in Stockbridge, the children are very excited,

enjoying imagining what it will be like. We haven’t

been away for sometime and so the whole idea really

does appeal to them. We only need to take a change

of clothes, dinner and breakfast as all bedding and

towels are provided. Leaving home at just past 2pm

we arrive under an hour later and stay in two lodges:

Cox’s Orange Pippin and Barnack Beauty; both named

after varieties of apple. We discover that apple trees

are truly celebrated at this RHS partner garden with a

variety throughout the 14-acre site.

There’s a cosy feel to the luxury accommodation that is

tastefully decorated with antique furniture and paintings.

It’s all on one level and user-friendly for all abilities

including wheelchair users, who are sure to love the

showers complete with underfloor heating. Each lodge

caters for two guests. There’s a connecting door between

each allowing the children a little independence.

This part of Hampshire is a walker’s delight and staying at

Houghton allows guests to stroll around the grounds and

discover some really beautiful countryside. The children

discover a beautiful maze, Herbert, the alpaca and some

sheep. We see the Oriental garden in progress; you can

imagine how delightful this will be when completed.

During our spring visit bluebells and daffodils are

everywhere. There are many varieties of these trumpeted

delights, which really lift the spirits as they sway in the

breeze.

In the morning when I pull up the blinds a couple of blue

tits greet me. What a lovely start to the day. This brief

time away even inspires my creativity; I write a poem

(submitted to a competition so cannot publish yet) and

sketch the jar of fresh daffodils on the table.

We leave at 10am, park down a side street and rediscover

the quaint market town of Stockbridge. Probably the best

known and longest established business in town is The

Wykeham Gallery run by Gerald Dodson. Walking around

the gallery inspires Henry because on our return home he

SHUGBOROUGH BOOKSHOP

The Staffordshire Centre is a group of National

Trust members who fundraise to support local Trust

properties – specifically Shugborough - and was

delighted to be sponsors of the new bookshop when it

opened. Nationally, bookshops raised £1.5 million for

the Trust last year. This is its story – so far.

In late 2018, the old storeroom was renovated by a

volunteer project team and new bookshelves installed.

There were no books to sell so requests were placed on

the Shugborough Facebook page. The Staffordshire Centre

sent out requests to all members for book donations. Those

members actually donated more than 2,000 books in the

first two months!

The shop opened in March 2019 and was an instant

success. In that first year the sales total was a remarkable

£38,400, astonishing when the two price levels were £1.50

for a paperback and £2.50 for a hardback. This was due to

the efforts of the Shugborough volunteers who ensure the

bookshop is manned every day.

For obvious reasons 2020 was not a good year for the

bookshop! Lockdown closed the shop and when it reopened

towards the end of September it was only open for a matter

of weeks before a second lockdown closed it again, this time

until mid-April 2021. Despite that fact the sales figure for

the year March 2021 to February 2022, was £37,500.

Shugborough’s general manager, Hayley Mival said “Last

year we used the money raised by the bookshop as match

funding to unlock a bigger grant which together then paid

for the repairs and redecoration of the Tower of the Winds.

This is a brilliant example as to how one donation (to set

the bookshop up), leads to a bigger amount raised (the

bookshop income), leads to a bigger grant that makes such

a big difference to conservation and what we are able to

achieve on the estate, keeping Shugborough special for

ever.”

This year the revenue will contribute to the restoration of

the Chinese House, shown in the picture.

Authentic Cornish

Pasty

Introduction

A Cornish pasty is one of those things we almost

always buy, yet in baking terms the concept is

really very simple. After all, this was a homebaking

staple for the tin miners of Cornwall, with

its thick crust ready to be disposed of, so ensuring

dirty hands wouldn’t contaminate the meat.

Delicious, wholesome, and able to be added to

vegetables or salad to form a main meal, the

pasty really is one of my favourites.

Ingredients

(serves 5)

For the pastry

• 450g plain flour

• salt

• 115g cold lard, diced

• 75g cold unsalted butter,

diced

• About 90ml ice-cold water

• 1 egg, lightly beaten, to

glaze

For the filling

• 1 large onion

• 120g swede

• 1 large floury potato, such

as King Edward or Maris

Piper

• 400g beef skirt

• 50g butter

• Salt and pepper to season

Method

1. To make the pastry, mix

the flour and salt in a large

bowl, add the lard and butter

and rub in with your fingertips

until the mixture resembles

breadcrumbs. Stir in enough

water to make a fairly firm

dough, then knead briefly until

smooth. Shape into a ball, wrap

in cling film and chill for at least

30 minutes.

2. Now move on to the filling,

slicing the onion finely to start.

Cut the swede and potato into

small, thin strips; keep each

separate. Cut the beef into

small, thin pieces and divide

into five portions.

3. Heat the oven to 200°C/Gas

mark 6. Divide the pastry into

five equal pieces. Roll each out

on a lightly floured surface to

a 3mm thickness and cut out a

24cm circle, using a plate as a

guide.

4. Scatter a scant layer of

swede on the pastry semicircle,

leaving a 1cm border.

Add a similar layer of potato,

season lightly and top with

some onion. Repeat the swede

and potato layers, seasoning

as you go. Check the pasty will

close, then add the beef. Add a

final layer of onion, season and

dot with butter.

5. Brush the pastry border with

a little beaten egg, then close

the lid of the pasty, making

sure that the edges meet. Press

together firmly and then crimp

the edges together by pinching

all the way round between your

thumb and forefinger.

6. Fill and seal the remaining

circles of pastry in the same

way. Place the pasties on two

baking trays and cut two small

slits in the middle of each one.

Brush the pastry with beaten

egg. Bake for 20 minutes,

then lower the oven setting to

160°C/Gas mark 3 and bake for

30 minutes longer.

Stafford Flower Club

Our June meeting date matches mid-summer, so the

Committee of Stafford Flower Club decided on a little

madness and are holding the meeting in the Evening!

Peggy Leslie and Pam Owen will be depicting “Take

Two” in flowers. Peggy’s arrangements are exquisite

and her attention to detail means that she is often

in the winning seat of local competitions. As Pam

joins Peggy you will be excused in thinking you are

seeing double as Pam mirrors Peggy’s arrangements

in the demonstration giving us two versions of the

same arrangement. This will be a very interesting

demonstration to watch with lots of ideas, hints and

tips.

This month we shall be running a Tombola stall with

lots of prizes and a special quiz sheet for you to

purchase and tax your brain with a prize for the overall

winner. We will still have our usual raffle of the flower

whose father was a British Spy during the
