‘The community needs to
know what’s going on’
• By Emily Moorhouse
IMPROVEMENTS to an
intersection on busy Sparks Rd
will not happen for another six
years.
But moves are afoot by the
Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board to
get the work done sooner.
The city council said the
Milns/Sparks/Sutherlands Rd
intersection in Halswell has not
been allocated funding until
2028.
Last year the community
board received an email from
the city council saying the
intersection was likely to be
improved this year.
The delay has frustrated
community board member
for the Halswell Ward Andrei
Moore who says the intersection
is dangerous.
“What makes no sense to
me is that it’s still not in the
budget for another (six) years,
I don’t know what’s changed
between last year and this year.
We (the community board)
struggle to get information
from council. We really struggle
with communication and
transparency ultimately,” Moore
said.
Moore’s concerns and
frustrations are backed by
community board chair Mike
Mora.
Mora said the intersection has
CONCERNED: Community board member Andrei Moore says the Sparks Rd intersection
improvements need to be prioritised.
been an issue for a number of
years and he has suggested to city
council staff that infrastructure
for a new intersection layout be
done before nearby development
is finished.
In the city council’s annual
plan there were 90 submissions
from the public covering a range
of issues with the intersection,
including roading infrastructure,
cycling infrastructure and
footpath and streetscape.
City council records show
there have been two minor
injury crashes and one noninjury
crash at the intersection
reported in the last five years, the
latest being 2019.
The intersection has a
collective risk of low medium,
ranking as 345 against other
intersections around the city,
said a city council spokesperson.
Moore said residents’ had
shared their concerns about the
intersection with him, and he
doesn’t believe the statistics on
accidents at the intersection are
accurate.
“The statistics also don’t factor
in the growth and increase to
risk that is happening right now.
Many residents don’t feel like
it’s worth making a submission
because they don’t feel like
they’ll be listened to and it’s not
hard to understand why they feel
that way,” he said.
“The area overall is growing so
quickly and this intersection is
having a retirement village being
built right by it as we speak, as
well as a new preschool in the
works.”
A city council spokesperson
said: “Council is in discussion
with the developer on their
future development, and the new
intersection with Sparks Rd. A
design for the intersection has
not been completed at this
stage.”
The city council website
shows a total vehicle count of
5934 travelling along Sparks
Rd – passing between Milns and
Sutherlands Rd – a day during a
surveyed period this year.
“The community needs to
know what’s going on, when it
will happen and that council’s
committed to funding it, that’s
what we’re asking for,” Moore
said.
Garden,
pantry
on the
move
• By Fiona E lis
CURRENTLY thriving in
peak season, this summer will
be the last in Peverel St for the
Riccarton Community Garden
and Pātaka.
However, Nick Te Paa (right)
is staying positive abou the
move that will be required
when the lease on the 151
Peverel St site expires in September.
Te Paa and his wife Loretta
helped set up the community
garden in 2013, later expanding
the projec to include a community
pantry, or pātaka.
At not quite 4 sq m, the
pātaka was too sma l for the
weekly average of about 40
people it helped to feed, Te Paa
said.
“We don’t have the capacity
to store here, so a lot of the stuff
is stored at my place, in the
garage.”
He hoped to rebuild it at
twice the current size when a
new location was settled on.
“A l that extra wi l be just
storage space, and that’ l
free up my garage. One side’s
completely taken up with food.”
The end of the Kāinga Ora
lease was likely to mean the
separation of the garden and
the pantry.
Community
patrol
tasked with
monitoring
dangerous
intersections
• By Fiona E lis
A VOLUNTEER community
patrol has been tasked with
policing dangerous intersections
in a bid to improve driver
behaviour.
The Hornby Community
Patrol has been monitoring three
intersections, including one where
a cyclist died after co liding with a
truck.
Patrol
secretary Ann
Smith said
the patrol had
been tasked
by police with
focusing on the
three locations,
including the
intersection of
Shands and Halswell
Junction Rds, where cyclist
Russe l Ramsden was ki led last
May.
The Buchanans and Carmen
Rds intersection was also being
monitored, along with the
Main South and Springs Rds
intersection.
This is part of a steady but
quiet summer for the 45-member
volunteer team, who patrol
between five and six times per
week.
Simply being seen made a
difference, Smith said.
Graveyard volunteers need help
• By Lydia Lewis
PUBLIC AND community-run
cemeteries around the country
are struggling to recruit staff and
volunteers.
One Christchurch volunteer
has been holding the fort alone,
but he, like many others, needs
help.
Plans are in the works by the
national cemeteries body to prop
up a recruitment campaign for
burial places managed by local
councils, trusts and community
groups.
Out the back of a wellmanicured
2ha lot at St Paul’s
Anglican Church in Papanui
is teacher and volunteer Julian
Dent.
“I think people seem to be
too interested in themselves
[other] than community . . . we
would love some help. Think of
a garden, and this is a big one,”
he said.
About 15 years ago, the
graveyard was unkept with
overgrown gravestones that were
covered in moss.
“It was out of control, I
thought . . . mmm, I can do
something to help here, the next
week, I was asked to look after
one row and one row eventually
turned into the whole cemetery.”
Ever since then he has been
volunteering at the graveyard
where many notable Cantabrians
and war heroes are buried.
He has been labelled a “super
DEDICATED: Julian Dent at work in the St Paul’s Anglican Church graveyard.
gardener” by the church’s warden
Jennifer Barry.
“He comes in, he mows the
lawns, checks the plants, we’ve
got about 100 roses that need
pruning, bark needs to be
spread,” she said.
Dent is 78, and his extensive
knowledge of the grounds is
irreplaceable.
“We have several very sad
graves where, for example, three
sons died in World War 1 and
one came back and he died,
so four sons completely wiped
out.”
He is keen to start passing on
his experience so the next generation
can take over, but that is
a problem.
“There is not a next generation
taking over the locally run
cemeteries. A lot of these
cemeteries are staffed by
volunteers, normally locals,”
said Hayden Parr, chair of
the Cemeteries and
Crematoria Collective.
It is so bad, the collective
has been looking at starting a
national awareness campaign.
“To actually make people
aware that this is a really rewarding
career and it exists in the
first place,” Parr said.
“A lot of people don’t have a lot
of things to do with cemeteries
until the unfortunate time they
need one.”
Parr encourages anyone
looking for work to give their
local cemetery a call because
working in a graveyard may just
end up being the most rewarding
career of their life.
“I’ve been doing this over
a decade now and I can’t
even begin to count the
number of families I have
helped in the hardest time of
their life.”
He believes a sense of ‘duty
of care’ has diminished over
the years with people no longer
feeling connected to their
communities.
Barry reminded people that
everyone has a role to play.
“We are all sad when we see
a graveyard that is not looked
after, but unless we take that
sadness and convert it into
labour it doesn’t really mean
much,” she said.
“I do it because I love it and
I respect these people who are
buried here,” Dent said.
Tennis club trophy honours memory of Kaye
• By Emily Moorhouse
HALSWELL Tennis Club has
named a cup in honour of its late
“exceptional” player.
The Kaye Bond Memorial
Cup was presented to the club’s
midweek mixed doubles winners
Marcela Breckon and Stuart
Westoby.
Breckon has been a member
of the club for two years and
won the midweek ladies’ singles
trophy this season too. She hails
from Argentina and is a talented
Latin American dancer.
Westoby is a member who
plays on Saturdays and, since
he retired, has joined the club’s
Tuesday group.
Kaye’s husband Trevor Bond
presented the cup to Breckon
and Westoby at an awards ceremony
this week.
Bond had been asked if he
would mind the club naming
a cup after Kaye, as she had
quickly become an asset to the
club after joining in 2007.
Bond said he was “pretty
chuffed” with the idea and Kaye
would have been happy too, in
spite of not liking the limelight.
“She didn’t like fuss, she liked
to play games and help with
coaching. She was pretty humble,”
Bond said.
In 1964, when Kaye was 16, she
and her sister Hine, then 17, won
the ladies’ doubles category at
the New Zealand Maori Tennis
Championships in Wairoa.
WINNERS: Stuart Westoby (left) and Marcela Breckon were presented the Kaye Bond
Memorial Cup by Trevor Bond.
Bond also said Kaye won the
ladies’ singles and doubles at a
tennis tournament in Waikato in
the mid 70s.
Kaye stopped playing a year
before she died of cancer in 2018,
aged 71.
Glennis Griffin, who donated
the cup, was Kaye’s tennis partner,
playing doubles alongside
her for about seven years.
“Kaye had been such a lovely
influence at the club, she was quiet
and unassuming and a very, very
good player,” Griffin said.
Griffin and Kaye played
together each week and won the
Halswell midweek ladies’ doubles
competition three times.
“When she was on the courts
she was an amazing player and
she very quietly helped mentor
a lot of the new players,” Griffin
said.
Griffin still thinks of skills
Kaye taught her, particularly
when taking shots at the net as
Kaye was an “exceptional” net
player.
“There’s one (shot) I still struggle
with and I think of Kaye
telling me ‘take it on the right’,”
she said.
Kaye also played in the club’s
A team, but often made herself
available to fill in for other teams
St Margaret’s students find success in
economic development competition
ST MARGARET’S College
has scooped two of the top
three prizes in the inaugural
Canterbury Economic
Development Challenge.
It was the only school to field
two of the six teams in the
national final after two earlier
rounds of competition.
Run by Canterbury
University in conjunction with
Christchurch NZ, the fledgling
competition marked 100 years
of teaching for UC’s Business
School. It was originally slated
for 2020 but delayed until this
year because of Covid-19.
The challenge was to present
an idea, in video format, for
an economic development
project for ChristchurchNZ that
could enhance the economy
of Canterbury and improve its
living standards. It was open to
all secondary school students
in New Zealand and to UC
students.
SMC year 12 students Jessie
Peng and Jessica Geng won
first prize for their proposal
of a public private partnership
between Environment
Canterbury and Canterbury
farmers to use drones for water
quality sampling and application
of fertilisers.
They believed the partnership
would provide significant cost
PROBLEM-SOLVERS: (Left to right) – Chloe Taylor, Jordan Silcock, Jessie Peng and Jessica Geng.
saving for farmers and would
be a revenue stream for ECan.
The accurate water quality data
would help to improve water
quality in the province.
The two students are
part of SMC’s International
Baccalaureate Diploma, an
internationally recognised
two-year qualification that
encourages students to direct
their own learning pathway and
develop skills and confidence to
make a lasting difference.
Year 13’s Chloe Taylor and
Jordan Silcock, studying NCEA,
were placed third, as well as
winning best video pitch.
Chloe and Jordan proposed
the ‘Te Ōtautahi Wira’,
the Christchurch wheel, a
Canterbury version of the
London Eye. They said it
would be a major tourist
attraction, drawing domestic
and international tourists to the
central city, providing valuable
revenue for local businesses
and ‘Te Otautahi Wira’
shareholders.
Andrea Drayton, SMC’s
curriculum leader of business
studies, said the girls’ economic
studies have helped them
develop critical thinking skills to
solve real-world problems.
“They had creative ideas
and each team worked
collaboratively playing to
their strengths – both teams
continuously improved and
refined their challenge concepts
following feedback from their
teachers and UC mentors.”
Drayton says economics is a
popular choice at SMC for both
IB and NCEA students because
of its real-world applications
and range of tertiary study
options including a Bachelor
of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts
and/or a Bachelor of Science.
Said executive principal Diana
Patchett: “We are delighted
to have been a part of this
inaugural national competition,
which challenged our students
to realise solutions to obstacles
through collaboration, curiosity
and flexible thinking, and
further prepares them to
contribute to the exciting
innovations under way in
Canterbury and nationwide.”
Community gardens’ grateful for compost
• By Emily Moorhouse
TWENTY-TWO tonnes of
“gold” in the form of compost
has been donated to community
gardens following a shortage.
Forty-one community gardens
around the city will benefit from
1200 bags of compost to help
grow produce, donated by Tui
Garden Products.
Canterbury
Community
Gardens Association
capacity
builder Rachel
Vogan said the
donation was
Rachel
Vogan
“crazy” and
has been wellreceived
by all of
the community
gardens around the city.
“It’s literally like gold for the
gardens because we can’t grow
good crops without getting
good nutrition into the ground,”
Vogan said.
Vogan was approached by Tui
after the bags of expired compost,
and strawberry and vegetable
mix were discovered. They
couldn’t be sold so the company
asked if the community gardens
could use it.
Because the compost goes
straight into the ground and the
community gardens follow all
the health and safety procedures
Vogan said the compost would
be fine to use.
“It’s better than getting money,
it’s what we need to help grow
our food, so it’s amazing,” she
said.
She said there is a huge issue
with shortage of compost for
community gardens, especially
with the uncertain future of the
organics processing plant in
Bromley.
That has a big impact on community
gardens because we’re
really short of compost to put in
the ground and without being
able to feed the soil it’s really
hard to keep feeding people,”
Vogan said.
Vogan said it was a “juggling
act” getting the compost to
each community garden as the
association didn’t have access
Left: Khy Hitchcock from Al Noor Mosque
community garden was happy to receive some of
the compost. Above: Andrew Lysons-Smith from
Tui Garden Products helped unload the bags of
compost.
to delivery trucks or a depot to
store the compost.
Luckily, Owens Transport
donated two delivery trucks
and drivers for a couple of
hours to deliver the 26 pallets of
compost to the Wai-ora Trust,
which offered its forklift and
space to store the compost for
other community gardens to
collect.
Each of the 41 community
gardens can take up to 22 bags
of compost, seeing garden members
filling up their cars to the
brim.
Vogan said in spring, a garden
event will be held and the
leftover compost mix will be
used for that.
Food truck venture proves to be a hit
• By Mick Jensen
A FOOD truck alley initiative
run through the Mt Pleasant
Community Centre has proven
popular, with plans to expand
and refine it next season.
To celebrate the end of a
successful first round a final food
truck alley will run on Queen’s
Birthday (June 6) from 4-7pm,
and the Pleasant Mountain Boys
will be playing.
The food trucks will return
for a new season on September
25.
A collection of up to a dozen
food stalls have set up on Sunday
afternoons in the centre car park
since March 20 and tempted
visitors with the likes of chicken,
stacked burgers, waffles, Thai
food, crepes, vegan burgers and
real fruit ice cream.
Community centre market
manager Derek McCullough
said the food alley had been
run as a trial and as a Sunday
dinner option for people passing
by.
‘‘There used to be a pizza bus
here years ago and with the
Sunday market only running
from 9.30am until 12.30pm
we saw an opportunity to
provide food in the late
afternoon.’’
McCullough said the food
venture had been very successful
and had run from 4pm-8pm
(more recently until 7pm because
of the shorter days).
POPULAR: The food truck alley at the Mt Pleasant Community Centre will celebrate a
successful first season with one final offering before shutting up shop until September.
There were plans to expand
on the site next season, increase
the range of what was on offer
and to lay on regular musical
entertainment, he said.
Because it had been mostly
takeaways, there had been a lot
of used containers and plans
were now afoot to recycle and
mulch them, he said.
The noise from food generators
is also set to be addressed and an
electricity hook up for traders is
being investigated.
McCullough said the location
lent itself to family picnicking
because it was right next to
the reserve and playground.
FOOD TRUCK ALLEY: Chris
Geary’s Smoke n Barrel is
one of 11 food trucks that
set up in the Mt Pleasant
Community Centre carpark
on Sundays from 4-7pm.
He said site fees paid by traders
went back to the community
centre, which was unique in that
it was independently owned by
the community and had to pay
its own way.
Friendly gym provides a
sense of belonging
For those people considering joining a gym
but are not sure if it’s for them, Wigram
Culture Fitness offers an experience unlike
any other.
As owner Heather Peterson explains:
“We have created an environment at our
gym in Wigram that is supportive. Our
members come from a wide range of ages,
from fathers and sons to mothers and
daughters, through to husbands and wives
in their 80s.
“Our gym provides a sense of belonging
and an environment where everyone feels
welcome and part of the Culture Fitness
family.
“We have various workout zones and gym
facilities and, in conjunction with these,
our gym offers Express Fitness Lanes
combined with the Fitness App Myzone.”
Heather shares 10 reasons to join the
gym.
1. Health benefits: Being active daily
reduces the risk of heart disease,
stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
2. Mental well-being: When you exercise,
endorphins are released, which can
calm anxiety and lift your mood.
3. Stress buster: The fitter you get, the
better your body is at regulating
cortisol levels (the hormone linked to
stress).
4. Access to equipment: Gym
membership gives you access to
equipment you wouldn’t have
space for at home, so you can keep
your workout fresh without buying
expensive gear.
5. Access to knowledge: If you are a
workout newbie, gym membership
gives you the tools and knowledge to
start out. You can learn the ropes with
the friendly team or a personal trainer.
6. Motivation: Being surrounded by
motivated people can encourage
you to stay on track. Plus, having a
friendly place to go is more appealing
than working out alone at home.
7. All-weather workout: The gym offers a
great place to work out, rain or shine.
8. Meet like-minded people: By
attending regular classes you get to
know more people, and make new
friends.
9. Improved sleep: Studies show that
people who exercise five or six times
a week are more likely to get a good
night’s sleep.
10. A place to relax : Generally, people
join a gym to work out, but they are
actually a great place to unwind.
“People are sometimes fearful of being
watched and judged at a gym,” Heather
says, “but Wigram Culture Fitness is not
like that. We’re full of locals of all shapes
and sizes, ages and ethnicities.
“Everyone is on a different
journey, so come and
share yours with us
and discover a really
friendly, supportive
environment.”
5-10 minutes to get as much
air into the mixture as possible.
If needed, add extra milk one
tablespoon at a time until a silky,
runny consistency is achieved.
Add salt to finish the batter. In
a warm frying pan, melt a knob
of butter and add 3 Tbsp of the
pancake batter to make 1 pancake.
Use the back of the spoon to
form a pancake shape. Cook for 3
minutes on both sides.
To assemble the pancake:
spread BBQ sauce over the base,
place spring onions, cucumber
and sunflower seeds in the centre.
Place the deep fried duck on top
with a drizzle more BBQ sauce.
Fold pancake and eat.
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
• We offer a free measure and quote in the
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
ground moisture barrier needs.
The importance
of air quality
The quality of the air
we breathe affects our
health and ability to
perform. We breathe in
and out approximately
20,000 litres of air every
day. It is therefore very
important to ensure
good air quality indoors
through adequate
ventilation. Ventilation
is the process of air
exchange to provide the
necessary air quality that
meets the needs of the
occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen
with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness
in the room and occupants can feel drowsy.
Invisible harmful substances like a high
content of dust and tobacco smoke are
harmful and can cause various diseases.
Even bad smells can cause discomfort or
irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s
easy to open windows for cross ventilation,
however as winter approaches, we start to
shut up out houses to trap in the heat and
as a result, air quality can decline.
Ventilation includes both the exchange
of air to the outside as well as circulation
of air within the building. It is one of the
most important factors for maintaining
acceptable indoor air quality in buildings.
Filtered air supply for summer and filtered
and warmed air in winter creates a healthy
environment in which to live and work.
In cases with poor or insufficient air
intake from outside, the oxygen content
decreases, humidity and dustiness levels
increase. If exhaust ventilation is not
provided or it is not effective, polluted air,
smells, humidity and harmful substances
are not removed.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required air exchange for your
building requirement. Smooth-Air offers
a wide range of ventilation equipment,
from air vents to ducting for fans, for both
the commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of fans and
ventilation components in-store but they
can also provide innovative solutions
tailored to differing requirements.
