Intro. Keeping the wheels turning...

MAY Issue 2022

We wanna hear from you info@motomedia.co.za

Read our back issues at www.motomedia.co.za

One fine summers evening, Paddy, Mick and Liam are

riding home from the building site where they work all

on Paddy’s motorcycle.

As happens they get pulled over by a Bobby who says

to them “This motorcycle is only licenced to carry two

people. Why are three of you on the bike?”

“One of you will have to get off and walk!”

“Three of us?” says Paddy as he turns to Mick. “Flip!

What happened to Rory and Niall?”

Have a great riding month!

Spot the difference

Last month was the final Tork Craft Spot the Difference

competition, and it looks like we caught you out again

with some arbitrary background changes. A very small

amount of you picked up the missing bush and the small

changes to the drill bit logo on the riders chest. These

are the eagle eyed readers that spotted all 8 differences,

and yet again just about everyone forgot to send full

names and etc, so here we go:

Lance, Pieter, Josh, Frosty, Jose, Ronald Steenbeek,

Jaco Koortzen, Yara Kunsmis, Marilize Grobbelaar and

Willie Du Preez – drop us a WhatsApp to 071 684 4546

to claim your very lekker prize, we will compare your cell

Puig Front Beaks

Manufactured in ABS material which is highly

resistant to impacts adding to your protection

from splashes or debris from the front wheel,

available in matte black. Puig has placed special

emphasis on the design of their beaks achieving

an avant-garde fender for most models of

motorcycle that will maximise the look of your

bike. Unlike a lot of the competition, the PUIG

front fender extension does not require the

fender to be drilled, so installation is quick and

easy and you do not damage or alter your bike

to fit it, so it can be safely and neatly removed if

the need arises.

Puig Screen Deflector

So! Shorter folk might not understand but us taller people

do sometimes find the windshield are just a little bit too low

creating buffeting on our helmets and exposing us to the rain

and cold, or just not giving us enough wind protection making

long bike journeys really long. Protect yourself from the wind

and the weather with the Puig range of visors and deflectors.

Adaptable to windscreens of most brands or OEM, Puig

offers the possibility of acquiring the visor in two different

models: Multi-adjustable visor attached by screws and the

Multi-adjustable visor which attaches by a Clip-On system. In

addition to the comfort and the added protection that it offers,

this piece stands out for the simplicity of installation to the

original screen of the motorcycle.

magazine about this busy little shop supplying a big

portion of the SA motorcycling community around the

premises in Utrecht and also acquired a Sherco agency.

When life gets complicated, we ride...

If you’re a motorcyclist, you’ll know that there is nothing

like a little throttle therapy to get you through the rough

patches. Perhaps it’s because you’re an expert at

avoiding potholes and slowing down over speed bumps

you are able to think fast in less-than-favourable

situations. Or maybe it’s just because you understand

that the joy of living fully is infinitely more rewarding

than the risk.

This month Perry Bikes got two spanking-new rrivals -

the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 and the Suzuki Gixxer 150

Naked from.

The Svartpilen combines power, light weight and

exceptional build quality to create an unmistakably

pure riding experience, and the Gixxer 150 Naked

offers massive bang for your buck. In addition to the

many exciting newcomers, Perry Bikes are excited to

GASGAS Enduro models:

As expected following the 2023 GASGAS cross-country and

MX bikes announcements, the new EC enduro model line-up

has undergone very little change for the third year of production.

With the linkage chassis, a few interchangeable and different

spec parts the GG enduro range is a mixture of its orange and

white siblings from the Austrian manufacturer.

The four-bike Gasser line-up for 2023 is essentially a bit

redder than it was with no major updates to the engine or

chassis this year.

The good news is that they are great! And they’re already in

store at most dealers. Go and book yourself a test ride.

FIRST LOOK: HUSQVARNA MOTORCYCLES 2023

MINICYCLE OFF-ROAD MODELS:

Husqvarna Motorcycles has unveiled its 2023 minicycle offroad

range with fresh looks for the season, new Maxxis tyres

on all models, plus brake and clutch changes to the TC 65

motocrosser.

Of the three-strong motocross minicycle range from Husqvarna

(TC 50, TC 65 and TC 85), the middle sibling 65cc model

receives most of the attention for 2023.

As well as the wearing Maxxis MX-ST tyres and new graphics,

the 65 has new floating brake calipers and clutch from

Formula, a brand maybe better known in the MTB and cycling

world. The new calipers will bite on 198mm front wave disc

and a 180mm rear disc.

Husqvarna say the TC 65 also has new clutch and brake

components for “reduced wear and maximum durability”

which we take to mean new pads and clutch plates.

The TC 85 and TC 50 have few updates this year with just

the Maxxis MX-ST tyres and new graphics.

2023 technical highlights:

New white, grey, and yellow graphics

New Maxxis

Maxxcross MX-ST tyres for all models

Easily adjustable WP XACT forks with AER technology and XACT

PDS monoshock

Confidence-inspiring ergonomics and a high-grip seat cover for

comfort and control

New Formula clutch assembly on the TC 65 for improved action

and durability

New larger rear disc and brake components from Formula for the

TC 65

NEKEN tapered aluminium handlebars on TC 65 and TC 50

models

Roller actuated throttle assembly for a smoother action on the

TC 85

Black Excel rims and CNC-machined hubs for low unsprung

weight and greater stability on the TC 85

The Husqvarna Motorcycles Technical Accessories range offers

a wide selection of engine and chassis upgrades, plus the apparel

collection including helmets, goggles, and riding gear for all

ages and abilities.

The 2023 minicycles motocross line-up will be available soon at

authorised Husqvarna Motorcycles dealers.

2023 KTM

enduro Models

As we were finishing up with this issue, the Mac

went “ding” and KTM dropped a mail all about

their latest offerings.

This is what they sent along:

New for 2023, an all-new graphic design and white, purple and

orange color scheme come together into a seamlessly blended palette.

This color scheme was specifically chosen by the designers

to pay homage to the early ‘90s enduro models, setting the 2023

KTM Enduro range apart from anything else on the trails.

The looks are further emphasized with the use of a race-inspired

orange-coated Chromoly steel frame. Not only does this echo

the styling on full-factory race machines but provides the perfect

backbone to set off the 2023 graphics pack.

In terms of engines, the 2-Stroke model range makes use of

KTM’s patented Transfer

Port Injection (TPI) technology. Not only has this ensured fewer

emissions and fuel consumption but provides smooth and strong

power delivery from the bottom right through to the top end of the

rev-range.

The 4-Stroke model range provides the most concise offering of

models, starting with the KTM 250 EXC-F and KTM 350 EXC-F and

topping out with the powerhouses KTM 450 EXC-F and KTM 500

EXC-F. All models in the 4-Stroke range benefit from engines that

are engineered to deliver massive torque down low with class-leading

power delivery at higher RPMs.

These are flanked by the ever-popular KTM EXC SIX DAYS range,

which offers a special tribute to the upcoming 2022 FIM International

Six Days Enduro in France, combining the very latest in

innovation with an extensive list of race-derived parts as standard.

Every motorcycle in the range gets fully adjustable WP XPLOR

suspension as standard, with Progressive Damping System (PDS)

on the rear.

More news soon.

Minus

400

Mario Roman wins inaugural event:

This was the first Hard Enduro race in Israel, which is considered by many to be a paradise for Hard Enduro

lovers. Held in terrain at the lowest point on Earth – Minus 400 features terrain like no other. This was an

epic opening round.

Mario Roman took overall victory ahead of Billy Bolt and Graham Jarvis in the brutal desert conditions.

He came through the scorching heat to win, claiming the first win of the all-new and expanded 2022

edition of the Hard Enduro World Championship.

The Sherco rider started the final day in fourth place. Ahead lay a 75km course winding through the

desert that would become increasingly testing toward the end.

While his team-mate, SA’s Wade Young set the early pace with Billy Bolt in hot pursuit, Roman

bided his time. In third place at the final service park, he then used his immense trials skills to

come through the grueling boulder garden and seize the lead.

“It’s amazing to get this win. What a start to the season! I feel like it’s a long time coming

since my last big victory,” said Roman. “Overall the race has been very good for its first

edition. The entire three days were tough with the terrain and the heat.

“Today was a battle. I started fourth and focused on my own pace. In the technical terrain

I caught up to them and after service I pushed on again. In the final key sections I made

my move and took the win.”

It was tough on Young who won the previous day’s prologue and looked set for

victory before it turned out that he had missed a section of the track. He slipped

down to fifth place.

Billy Bolt finished second and says the short turn around between SuperEnduro

and Hard Enduro seasons was a factor, “It’s been a physical start to the

season for sure.” Says Billy. “After a full SuperEnduro season I was a little

underprepared coming here. Considering how little time I’ve spent on the

two-stroke prior to Israel I’m happy with second. At the service point I

could see Mario and Wade’s tyres were in better condition, so I knew I just

needed to hang on to the finish to secure a podium result.”

Graham Jarvis was back for his first race since injuring himself at Romaniacs

2021. Never underestimate the silent assassin: The veteran

finished in third place just over two minutes behind Bolt.

A big result! “It feels brilliant to be back racing and even

better to finish on the podium.” Graham explained. “It’s been

a long road to recovery to get to this point. The initial part

of today’s race was fast and I wasn’t comfortable to go with

the top guys straight away - I’m still thinking about my knee.

But after the service point I settled in and started to make

progress. The rock section at the end was the decider and I

made places there for third.”

Alfredo Gomez on his Gas Gas was dogged as ever in taking

fourth overall.

Roman, Bolt, Jarvis, Gomez and Young were the only riders to

reach check point nine on the tyre-eating course.

Minus 400 is the opening round of a new look Hard Enduro

World Championship, which has expanded to nine rounds

for 2022, adding this race in Israel plus events in Serbia and

Canada alongside classics like the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo

and Red Bull Romaniacs.

After the extreme heat and dry terrain of Israel’s Dead Sea,

the Hard Enduro World Championship now heads deep into

the Serbian Mountains for round two with the Xross Hard

Enduro Rally on May 18-21.

If you saw our feature on the Motul Tour Of

Legends in last months issue, you’ll see that

we bumped in to Ex quad racer and Namibian

go-fast guy Dirkie Baard. Dirkie is a 2 time

SA quad champ and – when quads could still

race The Roof – he won that twice too. As

it happens, he runs adventure bike tours in

Namibia and over dinner, he sad telling us all

about what it’s like to ride in that beautiful

part of the world.

We asked him to send along some pics and a

bit more info – which he has – and if this lot

does not give you wanderlust, then you should

not really be riding…

He accommodates a maximum of 14 riders at

a time with three different types of tours.

The first is mostly gravel roads – for the more

chilled adventure rider and covers a big part

of Namibia, Damaraland and the Kaokoveld.

Roughly 350KMs per day. You can either bring

your own bike, or you can rent a DRZ400.

UNTAMED

AND RIDING IN NAMIBIA

Then he offers two tougher off-road options –

either for harder core, experienced ADV riders

or for “Plastics” who can enjoy the multitude

of Dunes, riverbeds and mountain passes that

Nam has on offer.

“Everything you can imagine!” He says… “And

if we get lucky, we often see Black Rhino, Oryx

and desert elephants.”

He stresses that you need to be fairly

experienced – especially if you are on a big

bike.

“Namibia is sandy”, he says, “If you can’t ride

sand, you will know how to by the end of one

of our tours!”

They have a few set tours in place like the

8 day Damaraland adventure, but they can

custom make packages to your requirements

with a minimum group of 10 riders. Fly into

Walvis Bay, Dirkie and his crew collect you

from the airport.

To get your bikes there, clients can crate

their bikes and send them up to Walvis Bay

by truck and then fly in and ride the bikes to

Goanikontes Oasis situated in the Swakop

river, 35km from Swakopmund. That’s where

the start and end destination is for all the preset

tours.

Every rider gets his own tent kitted with a

stretcher and bedding, not a sleeping bag

All meals, fuel and expenses are covered

except soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and

other activities like game drives not included

on the tour itinerary.

There is a team with a 4x4 truck driving ahead

of the group pitching up camp every day.

By the time the riders get there everything is

done and they can have a beer and relax.

There will be a back -up vehicle behind the

group with spares, tools and equipment.

The overnight camps are a combination of wild camps and

camping at established campsites like the famous Palmwag

lodge. On the 10 day tour there is an off day where riders can

make use of the lodge’s activities like Rhino trekking or game

drives.

Sounds awesome! We’ve ridden Namibia and it’s an amazing

place. Maybe, just maybe we’ll get back there to join you!

CSMX Caledon National & Regional Enduro

Our Lorna Darrol lives in The Fairest Cape – so we sent her along to

cover the CSMX National Enduro…

She says:

The CSMX Regional & National Enduro event took place on the farm,

Dieprivier, off the R406 on the way to Greyton. The day was cool,

initially with heavy cloud which lifted and allowed some sunshine

through - ideal riding weather.

The day got off to an early start at 8am with Race 1 consisting of all the

senior classes. There was some serious competition for the holeshot

as per normal and soon the dust began to lift as the passing wheels

churned away the initial moisture from the evening.

The seniors course was a gruelling loop of 25km, with much climbing

and descents of the hills surrounding the farms.

Everyone had complimentary things to say about the ride and the

flowing riding made an enjoyable event for all. The KZN guys were

particularly impressed (ahem!) with the loose stones and dust that the

Cape had to offer!

Race 2 – all the Junior classes – got away at 2pm, with many of the

smaller bikes having some difficulties in the ruts that the big wheels

had dug out. Thankfully their loop was just 10km long, and most –

Camden Mclellan

Motocross World Championship Debut...

“Young South African motocross talent,

Camden Mc Lellan (17), made his motocross

World Championship debut this weekend.

With a break in the European 250 Championship,

where he is currently in 5th place in the

championship, Mc Lellan took the opportunity

to test himself against the best 250 MX riders

in the world.

The entry list was larger than usual with

several top EMX 250 riders taking the same

opportunity, but Camden was confident with

the leadup to the race that he could get close

to the top 10. Free Practice he came to terms

with the track but didn’t put in a fast lap. Timed

practice Camden put in a good lap and put

himself in 16th place and will a fighting chance

in the Qualifying race.

His first MX2 gate drop and Camden filled in

behind the factory machines and started going

forward from around 17th place. Through the

race he managed to make some good passes

and make his way up to 13th by the finish. A

great result for the young south African.

Sunday came and the weather had changed,

overnight rain and forecast to continue through

the day meant it would be a cold and wet debut.

Camden went out for warm up and again

just rode the track and made sure he covered

every inch to get ready for the upcoming

battle.

Moto1 Camden got off to a good start and was

lying around 17th again and moving forward,

his momentum however would be stopped

when he slid up the face of a jump in the first

lap and the bike threw him over the bars, his

bike cartwheeled and when it came to rest was

hit by another rider. The bike was pretty bent

up and the rear mudguard seat and subframe

where damaged, the team made an attempt to

repair as best they could but Camden was prevented

from re-entering the track as the bike

was too badly damaged and deemed unsafe.

Not the start he was looking for, but he was

find and ready for moto2.

Moto2 Camden again came out around 17th

but made some early passes and had a great

opening lap passing a few factory riders and

put himself in a great position coming to the

end of the opening lap, but ended up making

contact with another rider before a tricky

switchback which sent him into haybales.

He remounted in last place, with a lot of pain

in his left hand and fought his was from last

place. He gallantly made his was through a

few riders to finish the race in 24th.

This certainly wasn’t the debut he pictured but

he showed speed and grit over the weekend

and no doubt will show some good things in

the upcoming European championship rounds

and come to his next World Championship

event even stronger and hungrier for top

results.”

The last person we know who raced the world

championship was Shannon Terreblanche

in 2010. And then still doing it is Calvin

Vlaanderen whom we all still claim as a South

African rider even though he is riding under

Dutch licence.

BOXING

Smart

BMW pride themselves on having a bike for everyone – and if, well the Exclusive was not

enough motorcycle for you, then you might want to have a gander at the Option 719 version.

We took both out for a lekker ride.

Pics by Black Rock Creative.

It’s interesting to note that we’ve only really ridden the new GS shift cam models twice before

this feature. First at the press introduction that took place in Natal. On that launch, we got

to know the new bike in typical Motorrad style with a great long adventure through the Natal

Midlands. And then, about a year back, Sean went along to The Fairest Cape where he hustled

the bike through some amazing passes.

So it’s been a while…

The funny thing about a GS is that they are like an old friend. You don’t need to see them every

day but you just know that you’ll enjoy the company. And to be quite honest after a few hours in

the saddle, especially with the updated engine, you come to understand why these bikes are so

popular.

But we digress.

When we collected these two bikes from the friendly folks at Fourways Motorrad, a 40th edition and

an Exclusive, young Mike Pohl passed the comment. “Chaps, aside from the obvious… these bikes

are different. I look forward to hearing your opinion.”

Ummm. A GS is a GS is a GS right? Well no not really, and we’ll try to explain why…

Even though BMW’s Exclusive was the pinnacle of the GS pack, BMW

went even further into the luxury market with the addition of the

40th anniversary edition. They came up with a unique design for the

anniversary inspired by the R 100 GS and nicknamed “Bumblebee” in

black and yellow. There are also some neat little styling touches, like

the gold-anodised spoked wheels and yellow handguards that come

as standard on the Anniversary GS.

This is the most advanced GS to date, with new rider modes,

updated tech, new adaptive headlights, along with an updated

heated seat, (rider and pillion), and grips.

We know it all works because some fool turned it all on before we

rode out…

LIN

The adaptive light is quite something. It is linked to the new IMU

which measures lean angle and therefore knows how far over the

bike is and thus where to point the headlight. The headlights will

even adjust depending on the weight on the rear of the bike, dipping

slightly when you add a pillion and luggage.

Pretty cool huh?

In addition to all that, The IMU has been enhanced, and now takes

readings from six axis rather than five, as with the previous model.

The DTC, (Dynamic Traction Control), uses the new IMU to compute

the variance between wheelspin and a wheelie, or ‘lift-off

suppression’ as BMW calls it, meaning in the Dynamic Pro and

Enduro Pro modes, when you pop the front wheel up, you still have

some TC, something which wasn’t possible on the old bike.

That Shift Cam Boxer engine is a marvellous thing, with so much

torque and perfect fuelling. Power and torque are unchanged over

the previous model and... there are now seven modes to pick from,

plus a new Eco mode. Dynamic Pro and Enduro Pro modes are

standard, both of which allow you to personalise or deactivate the

ider aids. The Eco mode is brand-new for the Anniversary

model and in an effort to improve fuel economy, restricts

power to 100 hp and 109 Nm of torque, which is a

significant drop from the peak power (136 hp) and torque

(143 Nm).

With soaring fuel prices eating in to your expendable

income it’s a sensible feature on any bike.

And then… they stuffed this one with ‘Option 719’ goodies.

And we had to do some homework to figure out what that’s

all about:

From BMW: “Ever since 1923, the abbreviation 719 has

represented special, individual customer requests at

BMW Motorrad, which have been created at our plants as

special orders on the basis of great craftsmanship and

a significant attention to detail. We have created Option

719 as a tribute to this production process. Use it to give

various BMW Motorrad models an even more personal,

top-quality touch. Consequently, an abbreviation has been

turned into a quality feature and a promise: the promise

that we will create your individual dream bike at BMW

Motorrad.” So basically BMW makes a bunch of very

beautifully crafted goodies to compliment your ride. And

this one was dripping with billet bling… billet rear view

mirrors, foot pegs, levers, Tappet covers… literally, whatever

your little heart desires.

And you really do need to look twice to take it all in.

Perhaps, not for everyone, but… as the old saying goes

beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Why would this affect the ride you ask…? Well! The new

40 year feels… Better! In just about every way. And despite

the fact that BMW gives no hints as to any suspension or

engine upgrades on the newer model, our lot all agree that

there is just such a refined feel to it. Sure, this bike has a

lot less mileage on it than the Exclusive which might be

a part of it, but we dont believe that its purely a mileage

thing.

That’s not to say that there is anything wrong with the

Exclusive, that is one heck of a machine in its own right

but, the Bumblebee that we rode just felt… proper lekker.

Our lot shared their opinion:

Kyle Says:

I have really come to like the GS. The 1250 motor is way

more exciting and refined than its predecessor. When the

GS1200 had its upgrade to the 1250, it almost felt like that

took a scalpel to the bike and got rid of a lot of weight. The

bike eels lighter andeasier to move around in the garage.

The one thing I always struggled with the GS, was the

weight around the garage. Big bulking and cumbersome.

This is no longer the case. We had two different models in

this test. These two bikes do feel distinctly different.

I did a few tests to feel the difference between the two.

In the same modes andsettings, the 40 year has a

smoother throttle response than the exclusive. The

upgrades have made for an easer ride but havenot stolen

any personality.

Its easy to understand why GS sells so well in SA.

Séan says:

How old were you when you found out that “GS” stands for

Gelände/Straße (German: off-road/road)? Well, sad to say

I was ‘today years old’. In english: Off Road and Street, the

all round motorcycle. I personally own a pristine R1150GS

that everybody keeps trying to buy off me and I still believe

there is no amount of sensible money that could convince

me to part with it -unsensible money?... maybe.

When I was told I had to go review a couple

of new GS’s I dutifully donned my fashion

coordinated riding gear in typical GS style and

trudged along to our meeting point.

I can only assume the assembler of said

units is either really short, or a cruiser fan.

The handle bars of both bikes were laid back

down on the tank and the seats were set at

their lowest setting completely impractical and

uncomfortable my 2 metre, 115 kg chassis.

Fortunately that was an easy fix with a couple

of torx head bits. and I do like it quite a lot,

really eye catching. Then unit we rode had a lot

of bling added to

I do quite like the Bumblebee paint job as well

as all the billet aluminium tappet covers, wide

billet foot pegs, 719 levers all around and the

fancy new adjustable, X-headlamp.

But for me has to be the two 102mm pistons,

combined with the 4 valve cylinder heads and

BMW’s Shift-Cam variable valve timing under

those machined tappet covers that makes this

the best boxer twin motor in my opinion to

come out of Bavaria.

At around 5,000rpm the big Beemer really

explodes into life, banging on the super smooth

quick shifter while hanging on the gas soon

has the big girl trying to aim her front wheel at

the heavens, and it keeps pulling smoothly all

the way to its 9,000rpm redline. And smooth is

an understatement, this big BMW is like silk, at

136bhp it is ,

perhaps not as powerful as its Austrian

rival, but it is a whole lot smoother and more

gentleman-ly.

Our route took us through some river crossings

and with the recent rains they were pumping

properly. In fact, most of the dirt roads were

actually streams with deep pools here and

there, thick sand, rocks a plenty and deep rutts

were our off-road companions mostly.

Stick the big GS into dynamic or Dynamic Pro

and aim it wherever, it does all the thinking

for you, from traction control and ABS to

suspension setting and reactions to power

delivery so you can concentrate on the road or

trail ahead.

The “Exclusive” we had on test with the 40th

anniversary edition felt a bit more aggressive,

less refined and possibly not quite a sure

footed on the squirley stuff. Clearing a water

crossing and taking off a some serious speed

up a sandy track that became quite pack with

serious ruts on the Bumble Bee was easy, fun

and made me look like a much better rider

than what I actually am, the same section done

at the same speed on the “Exclusive” was a

lot more exciting, lots of butt clenching and

stretching of the ocular muscles, chucking in a

good surge of adrenalin for good measure.

Then it was straight on to the tar and some

twistys’s. On the tar, where most GS peeps

ride, you’ll battle to find a more comfotable

machine. Cranking through a bend quite low

I had to suddenly tighten up and dip in harder

to avoid a big patch of sand and was fully

expecting the big BMW to fall over, which it

didn’t… and this only served to challenge me

to see how low I could get before we had to

start paying insurance excesses on accident

damage claims.

My courage gave in before the bike did…

fortunately, the lower and faster I cranked into

corners the lower the GS seemed to want to

go.

We only had these bikes for a day or so and as

we headed back to the office I looked longingly

down the Freeway and day dreamed of places

like Memel, Normandien Pass, Verkykerskop…

BMW. May we please book some bikes for a

longer ride soon?

In the final analysis, the price ticket may seem

a lot, but you are getting a lot for your money…

The Exclusive with 30 000 odd kilometres on

the clock will set you back R240k.

The blinged out Bumblebee with 3000 odd

kilometers – a mere R352 500. But you will be

the boss of the GS kingdom.

Both were on the floor at BMW Motorrad

Fourways.

2022 KTM Adventure Rally

After a 2 year break, thanks to COVID restrictions, March

saw the return of KTM’s Adventure Rally, held, this time in

the central Drakensberg.

The orange army was based at the fantastic Champaign

Sport Resort and riders were treated to a great weekend

of ADV riding.

By all accounts, the fourth rendition of this event was a

roaring success.

NATIONAL MX

Rewarding Day for RedBull KTM Team

at Round 2 of MX Nationals.

By Tiegan Reed

For the past few years, Pietermaritzburg has been the home of some

of the muddiest races on the motocross calendar and 2022 wasn’t

looking any different. The weather predictions had the guys and girls

prepping their roll-off goggles and packing extras of everything, but

the anticipated downpour never arrived, making for a tough and dry

day of racing.

After the recent and unfortunate injury and retirement of their star

rider, David Goosen, Husqvarna introduced their new fill-in rider,

Michael Docherty. With years of international experience behind him,

Docherty was already turning heads in the practice sessions, coming

out with a top 3 in MX1. Team mate and Cross Country Champ, Davin

Cocker wowwed the crowds with a comfortable top 3 finish in MX2.

But some mechanical issues and bad luck had the riders missing out

on stepping up onto the podium for the overalls.

The RedBull KTM Team had a phenomenal

day with 4 class victories. Tristan Purdon,

Cameron Durow, Luke Grundy and Trey Cox, all

taking the overalls in their respective classes.

Team manager, Kerim Fitz-Gerald also made

a welcome return to the motocross track

clinching a top 5 finish in MX1.

Durow, Purdon and Jonothan Mlimi filled up the

top 3 positions in MX2, with Durow fresh from

Europe and feeling cosy on his home track.

He grabbed hold of the points lead in the MX2

Class; and Tristan Purdon, the Championship

defender in both premier classes, extended his

points lead comfortably in the MX1 Class.

The MX1 podium was completed with an

impressive ride from Out of Africa Monster

Yamaha’s Jesse Wright.

It was a clean sweep for the newcomer to

the RedBull KTM team in the Highschool

125cc Class. Luke Grundy took the double win

followed by points leader, Barend du Toit and

Bryce Peterson close behind in 3rd.

Last year saw Trey Cox lead the Pro-Mini’s all

season, losing out on the championship at the

last round. 2022 sees Cox make his comeback

also clinching onto the double win, extending

his points lead. Jordan van Wyk and Husqvarna

team rider Neil van der Vyver rounded up the

top 3.

The 65cc Class overall win went to little local,

Evan Frost who led out both races comfortably.

Frost was followed by two times 50cc

Champion Trenton Kretzmann and the up and

coming Brody Bircher.

Ross Mackenzie and Rayden Woolls, top

contenders in the 50cc Class were back and

forth throughout the day with Mackenzie

coming out on top, but it was not enough to

claim the points lead from Woolls.

Tintswalo Yamaha’s Anthony Raynards recent

retirement from the MX2 Class saw him take

on a new challenge. Still competing in the MX1

Class, but now taking on the MX3 Senior Class.

Raynard too pulled off a double win in the MX3

Class.

The ladies class had the local lady, Jadene De

Lima closing in on the 3x National Champion,

Kayla Raaff, but Raaff kept the lead for the

overall.

The next round of the MX National

Championship moves to Bloemfontein on May

14th, a well-liked venue by many of the riders

that makes for entertaining and close racing.

During this break, a number of the national

65cc & 85cc competitors have made their way

to Europe to test and build their strengths. We

wish them luck and are excited to see them

return and show off their speed.

Mayfair Gearbox Inland Motocross Championship

Round 4 – ERORA Motocross Track

Words: Uncle X

Pics: Sean Versfeld - Cloud 9

With a big storm and heavy overnight rain, the organisers were really

concerned about the race being cancelled had there been any additional

rain. Fortunately the rain stayed away and after a quick Jury meeting

racing was a “GO!”.

With around 170 entries and full gates in most classes including 19 ladies

riders the day was off to a muddy start. The MX1 and MX2 classes

were sent out first to clear the track and create some racing lines.

Heat 1 started at 10am and according to schedule the 50cc classes

went out first with some interesting results under the European type

conditions. The wash bays were crowded, taking a bit of strain but

coped well nonetheless.

The ladies class was an exciting race with many of the ladies never

having experienced the muddy conditions.

Racing concluded at 15H50 and what a great day of racing for all.

The next event on the calendar is Round 2 of the Inland National will be

hosted by Wetherd MX Park in Pe on Saturday the 30th of April 2022.
