Pursuing pickleball passion locally, nationally
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
It was about 10 years ago when an “Intro to Pickleball” course
at an area senior center piqued Diane and John Eichelberger’s interest.
“We had never heard of it, so we decided to go see what it was
about,” Diane recalled.
John had just retired from his dental practice where Diane, formerly
a speech therapist, worked in the office. They were looking
for something active they could do together. They found it in pickleball,
a quick-paced sport that resembles tennis but is played with
paddles and a wiffle ball on a compact court.
Fast forward to today, and the Eichelbergers—Pitchin area residents
who consider South Charleston their hometown—are pickleball
ambassadors and self-admitted addicts. They play up to six
days a week at various venues in and around Clark County, John
offers lessons, and the two have become quite competitive.
This year, both of them qualified through state competition to
compete at the National Senior Games which took place May 10-23
in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Senior Games are open to individuals
50 and older and feature a wide range of sporting events, from
archery to volleyball. Diane, 72, and John, 75, qualified in pickleball
as a mixed doubles team, and they each qualified to play singles.
John also made the cut to compete in men’s doubles.
“We played numerous games against talented opponents,” said
Diane, who was making her first Nationals appearance. This
marked John’s third time qualifying. “Needless to say, we won a
few and lost a few. It was a great time, and we met many wonderful
participants.”
The fellowship before and after games—whether on the competitive
scene or in more casual settings—is a
big perk of the sport, the couple said.
“There’s a lot of chit-chat between games.
The social part is probably the best part,”
For John, pickleball also is one more way
to scratch his competitive itch. When he
takes on a physical challenge, he is all in. At
age 66, he through-hiked the 2,190-mile Appalachian
Trail with Diane as his crew chief.
tennis courts is marked for pickleball (yellow lines). Diane and her husband, John, have been playing the sport
for about 10 years and compete locally and at the state and national levels. They play multiple times a week at
venues in Springfield, Troy, Huber Heights and Xenia, as well as in South Charleston where friends have installed
pickleball courts in their barns.
Plain City names new village administrator
POSTAL PATRON
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Plain City has a new village administrator.
On May 23, village council appointed
Haley Lupton to the position.
Lupton has worked for the village
since January 2021, first as a management
analyst, helping the administration
and finance department with
budgets and project support. She was
named interim village administrator in
October following the resignation of
Nathan Cahall.
The village conducted a nationwide recruitment
Haley Lupton
and selection process to find a permanent
replacement. The search committee
included residents, village staff members
and village council members.
As for why she threw her hat in
the ring, Lupton said, “I’ve always had
an interest in local government and,
having worked for the village, grew to
love the community and wanted to continue
service to the community.”
Prior to joining the Plain City
team, Lupton worked for the Franklin
County Auditor’s Office as an assistant
director in real estate and for the Ohio Department
of Development as a community development analyst.
She earned her master’s degree in public administration
from Cleveland State University.
The fact that she has worked for the village for
nearly 1.5 years and as interim administrator for
the past eight months should make for a smooth
transition.
“I will help staff to continue to do their jobs without
any huge transitions,” she said.
The top priority on Plain City’s to-do list is expansion
of the waste water treatment plant, according
to Lupton. Currently, the $19 million project is
in the permitting process with the Environmental
Protection Agency.

Farmers markets prep for a productive season
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Summertime is farmers market time. Vendors are gearing up for
another season or are already in full swing around Madison County.
West Jefferson Farmers Market
The West Jefferson Farmers Market will operate on Saturdays,
9 a.m.-1 p.m., in the parking lot at Pat’s Pizza & Pub, 55 E. Main
St., West Jefferson. Opening day is June 11.
“The market went really, really good last year. All of our vendors
did really well,” said Terry Lambert, who organizes the market with
Nola Lambert and Sherry Hook.
Lambert expects another good selling season this year. So far,
eight vendors are signed up to sell products ranging from fruits and
vegetables to baked goods, clothing, and handmade soap. A few
more vendors are likely to join the fun as the season gets started.
“We’re planning on having food trucks this year, too,” Lambert
said.
And senior vouchers are back. The program, organized through
Lifecare Alliance, provides senior citizens with vouchers to purchase
goods at the farmers market. More information about the program
will be announced as the season gets under way.
Vendor spaces measure 10x10 feet. To reserve a space, call Lambert
at (740) 837-0131 or stop by during market hours.
from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
Organizer Seth Osborne expects approximately
20 vendors to take part in the market
this year. Some set up throughout the
season, and some set up for part of the season.
Offerings include fruits, vegetables,
baked goods, and crafts. All vendors are
Madison County residents who grow their
produce and make their goods in the county.
“We’re all about supporting local,” Osborne
said.
For a vendor application and more information,
call Seth Osborne at (614) 989-9091
Plain City’s Uptown Farmers Market
Once again, customers can expect to find
an exciting variety of goods at the farmers
market in uptown Plain City.
“We had around 25 vendors last year,
and we hope for the same this year,” said
Haley Lupton, Plain City’s new village administrator.
The options will run from produce, local
meats, baked goods and ice cream to freshcut
flowers, cutting boards, dog treats, and
body and home products.
The market’s grand opening is set for
July 4. 9 a.m.-noon, to coincide with the village’s
Independence Day festivities. From then on, the market will
be open from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays through Oct. 6.
Food trucks will set up at the market periodically through the
season. Those on the list to participate are Tortilla Street Food,
Taco Mania, J.D.’s Farmhouse Cafe, Any Style Hotdogs, and Guelaguetza
Street Food.
“We also hope to do some programming at the market. Last year,
we did a cooking demonstration,” Lupton said.
Vendor spaces are $5 per week or $30 for the season. Applications
can be found at www.plain-city.com. (Hover over the “Parks
PICKLEBALL
Continued from page 1
He has run two marathons, and he hiked the 211-mile John Muir
Trail in California. With pickleball, it has been all about constant
improvement and seeking challenges.
“As I improved at the game, I looked for local and state tournaments,”
John said, noting he played in his first tournament
about seven or eight years ago and has been hooked ever since.
In addition to playing a lot of games, he does drills three times
a week with the help of a pickleball pitching machine.
“There are a lot of excellent players in the Springfield area. My
goal is to be competitive with them,” John said, adding he feels
good about holding his own against players who are 10 and 15
years his junior.
“I’ve been lucky to have been healthy. I’m taking advantage of
it while it lasts,” he said.
Easily one of the fastest growing sports in America, pickleball
attracts players of all ages. The fast pace is one of the draws. So
is the fact that it’s easier on the shoulders than tennis and doesn’t
involve covering a large court.
Many municipalities are catching on, converting some of their
Messenger photo by Kristy Zurbrick
tennis courts to pickleball courts. Some school districts are making
the same shift, Diane said. The village of South Charleston Diane and John Eichelberger like everything
has striped one of the tennis courts at Community Park for pickleball
play. Diane and John have friends in South Charleston who cise and competition to the camaraderie
about the sport of pickleball, from the exer-
with fellow enthusiasts.
Whether someone is interested in playing purely for recreation
or more for competition, the Eichelbergers wholeheartedly encourage
them to go for it. United Senior Services, the senior center in
Springfield, is a great place to get your feet wet in the sport. The
center offers introductory lessons on Wednesdays; John is one of
the instructors. The center also holds open playing time every day
in three categories—novice, intermediate and advanced.
In addition to the senior center, Diane and John play at the
Springfield, Xenia and Huber Heights YMCAs. Clark State College
in Springfield has courts marked for pickleball. Troy is home to a
large complex dedicated to pickleball, and players can find several
outdoor courts in the Dayton area.
With the 2022 Nationals in the rearview mirror, Diane and John
are looking forward to their next chance to make it to the big show—
the state senior games in August, where they will try to qualify for
the 2023 Nationals in Pittsburgh. State senior games are played every
