Where We’re Eating

Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week

NEW JERSEY’S PREMIER

FARM-TO-BOTTLE DISTILLERY

Featuring Artisan Cocktails & Spirited Gifts

Tastings, Tours, Entertainment & Events

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.

The place: Mario’s of Cape May right in the Washington Commons

toward the right of the ACME parking lot. This pizzeria has it all from

pizza, calzones and strombolis to salads, sandwiches and pasta. Throw

of Cape May.

The jack of all trades: When we arrived, Noah had our order ready

to go and was super nice to chat with. He’s been a part of the Mario’s

crew for five or six years now and has really had a hand in everything.

Thursdays 6:30-9:30

“Answering phones, running the counter, making the pizza — I’ve done

just about everything,” he says. “It’s the main reason I keep coming

back, it stays interesting. I also like how it’s fast paced and a good atmosphere

to work in.” We talked a little bit about the upcoming summer

THE SYMPOSIUM

and he’s ready to be helping with whatever he needs to. He even gave us

some insight on how things change as they get busier. The Mario’s team

is making five to six batches of dough every day — must be a well-oiled

machine back in that kitchen.

Mon-Thu 10am-9pm, Fri-Sat 10am-10pm,

a consistent outcome we’ve always seen when ordering from Mario’s.

The takeaway: Mario’s Pizza is a great summer spot for the family.

Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

Undertow: Now in year five as “temporary”

Exit Zero delivery driver. I

actually don’t mind being the delivery

guy. It gets me out of bed in

the (very early) morning and puts a

(very) few bucks in my pocket. I need all the

money I can get — I plan to fill my tank sometime

this month. I also come up with about

50% of my column while I’m driving. It’s

super-hard to type notes into my phone while

tossing bundles of magazines out my window

and steering with my knees, but I manage. It’s

also about the people I interact with, like...

Jerry Mancuso of Cape Harbor Shell.

Apparently, he really enjoyed my ribbing of

Steve Bistak a couple weeks ago. Alas, he did

not enjoy it enough to comp the rest of my

repair bill, but I’ll keep trying.

Scott Mann of Evolution Salon & Spa in

North Cape May came OUT TO THE CAR

to grab their bundle this week. You could all

learn a lot from Scott. Also, feels like I haven’t

talked much about Evolution this year. It’s not

you, it’s me.

Long-time friend Stephen Prince tried

to goad me into a workout from his new job

behind the counter at a gym that shall remain

nameless because I can’t afford to work out

there. But I have been hitting Planet Fitness

as regularly as I can, what with my rock star

schedule and all. I’m usually an elliptical man

but tried out the stair master the other day

and immediately regretted it because it’s hard

as hell but you can’t just hop off a machine

because it’s hard. I made it 10 agonizing minutes

then almost passed out furreal.

Balance yoga instructor Judy Heany was

at Boat Drinks Tuesday night. I think the last

time I saw her was on Valentine’s Day when I

was in a (very revealing) Cupid outfit. And she

was real close. Sorry about that. I’m still not

sure how it happened. But I TOTALLY want to

try yoga. Maybe one freebie and, if I don’t die,

we’ll schedule another one?

Alex and Lynn Sosik came to see me

TWICE this weekend at Exit Zero (with my

new steady, Jerry Kolber) and I don’t blame

them. We’re awesome. Then Alex mentioned

my joke about the potted plant barriers at Boat

Drinks and how they kept him from talking to

my former partner, Tim Joyce (now gigging

with Tom Naglee), when they went to see

him last weekend and I was like, uh, EXCUSE

ME!?! YOU’RE SEEING OTHER BANDS!?!

Why I never! (Also, happy birthday, Lynn.)

Speaking of Boat Drinks, if you’re lucky

enough to be there on a Monday or Tuesday

evening while I’m rockin’ with my boys Joltin’

Jerry Kolber and “Sugar” Dave Hughes, you

will also be lucky enough to hear my wife,

Cathrine, in the Terry O’Brien Trio. (I like

THE ULTIMATE CAPE MAY FOOD & DRINK GUIDE

What You Need To

Know About The

Food And The Vibe

It’s the original fine dining restaurant in Cape May.

The food is always creative and the breakfasts and

brunches, hard to beat — hence the lines.

Old-fashioned southern cuisine providing ultimate

comfort inside the historic Chalfonte Hotel. Eat inside

or on the veranda — there’s nothing more Southern

than spending the evening in a rocking chair.

Homemade specialties and secret sauces, from classic

pizza (using homemade dough daily) to paninis, garlic

knots and pasta dishes.

The legendary harborfront dive bar reopened with

a smart renovation undertaken by the Laudeman

family. But the character remains, along with those

fried scallops.

Sip on craft beers inside this rustic brewpub while

enjoying delicious and casual fare including their

BBQ smokehouse menu, juicy burgers and specialty

mac-and-cheese dishes. Great outdoor space!

A large and very reliable menu. Classic diner food,

oversized portions, and very reasonably priced. A

locals’ favorite for a reason.

Start every morning with their home-roasted coffee,

super-food lattes, gluten free baked goods and

varieties of toasts and frozen drinks.

Eat in the lovely, airy dining room or in the adjoining

bar area with a fun vibe. There’s also a daily bar

menu, happy hour, great martinis and classic,

generous dishes.

Enjoy gourmet ice-cream sandwiches and signature

Peace Pie squares made with your favorite flavors of

ice cream.

The Georgian Revival mansion is magnificent and

the modern American menu matches it all the way.

Bring your own favorite wine for a singular dining

experience on the beachfront.

This chic, airy restaurant, steps from the beach, is

housed in La Mer Beachfront Resort, serving up

Mediterranean-influenced dishes. The patio is the

perfect place to enjoy the ocean breezes.

If I told you my wife and I binged the

whole first season of a game show

in 24 hours, you would probably say,

“Bullsh*t!” But it’s a true story. Bullsh*t

is a new show from Netflix. Here’s how

it works. The game starts like Who Wants to Be

a Millionaire? There, contestants answer progressively

more difficult trivia questions with

four multiple choice answers. The higher the

stakes, the more difficult the questions.

In Bullsh*t, the contestant gets answers

wrong but still can get to the next round. The

contestant has three challengers who determine

if the player gave the correct answer

based on their rationale for why they selected

that choice. The challenger who most correctly

guesses if the player is being honest

or if they are full of bull gets to be the next

contestant; thus, they’re motivated to make

their own choices and that keeps the game

very interesting!

The player selects the answer, and immediately

only that person knows if they got the

answer right… or wrong! If they got it right,

Cape May Snaps

Print your photos directly from your phone

onto tiles, slates, metals and more.

The Movie Column

By arts columnist Tom Sims

no problem, they will eventually move on to

the next round anyway. Either way, they begin

explaining why the answer they selected was

right. If even one challenger says the player is

telling the truth, that player moves on to the

next level whether they were right or wrong.

Some players have gone very far knowing very

few correct answers.

The show is riveting. It’s hosted by Howie

Mandel. The right con artist, the one who

can think fast on their feet and balance truth

with a little bull, can walk away with a million

dollars.

Somehow, this game reminded me of a

table game played by my extended family

called Apples to Apples. In that game, one

player is the judge who pulls a card with an

adjective on it. The other players hold multiple

cards with one noun. The object of the

game is for players to quietly (again, quietly)

place nouns on the table that best match the

adjective. If the judge pulls “tiny,” the player

who has the noun “pea” should most likely

win. The way my family played this game,

it was the player who threw down the most

outlandish answer who won. “Tiny” might be

met with “The Human Brain.” At that point,

the volume was explosive as we all pitched to

the judge why our answer was the best match.

In Bullsh*t, smooth and compelling

talking is the real winner. The better you handle

your bull, the more you win. Can you see

why we had to burn through the first season in

24 hours? No bull!

Niko, Chris, Kayla visiting from UK

Tides weren’t right for the Heislerville

impoundments. Shorebirds typically

pile into the shallow body of water

on a high tide when the incoming

water pushes birds off the expansive

body of mud that is the Maurice River Cove.

Right where the waters of the Maurice River

flow into Delaware Bay. But my interest today

was studying the frenetic efforts of tens of

thousands of migrating shorebirds doing what

they do naturally, feed voraciously to put on

fat. Much has been made of the importance

of horseshoe crab eggs to northbound shorebirds,

most notably the Red Knot. But other

shorebird species, whose migration strategy

does not cut so close to the bone, are able to

utilize other food resources and feed more leisurely.

Among these are Dunlin, Short-billed

Dowitcher and Semipalmated Sandpiper.

As well as Semipalmated and Black-bellied

Plover. These species feed upon marine

worms buried in the mud that are exposed at

low tide. The worms are bright red and somewhat

elastic, and a single worm constitutes a

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

meal for the diminutive likes of a small sandpiper.

Watching the birds surging across the

flats, it’s a wonder the worms survive to breed.

In order to maximize the food resource

and minimize competition, the birds engage

in what is called resource partitioning.

Different species use different foraging strategies.

Dowitchers use their popsicle-like bills

for plumbing the depths and can find worms

before the water fully recedes. Dunlins probe

where the water is shallower. Sandpipers wait

for waters to fully recede before surging forth,

picking as they walk and locating prey with

tactilely sensitive bill tips. Plovers are sight

hunters, locating prey visually.

So, for those of you who may have wondered

why Ma Nature seems to have put all of

her eggs in one basket by depending so much

upon the eggs of the horseshoe crab. Here is

your answer: she doesn’t. Only the Red Knot

seems so bound to this single opportune food

resource and then only for a few critical weeks

in May as these long-distance migrants strive

to lay down fuel quickly.

Underweight knots cannot reach the

Arctic in any condition to breed, so the

eggs are critical to this species survival.

Semipalmated Sandpipers can fall back on

marine worms if crab eggs are in short supply

because Semis don’t need to fly all the way to

the High Arctic which is still snow covered

when birds arrive. Stored fat laid down in

Delaware Bay is all that stands between the

knot and survival.

You’re not imagining it. You do feel

better after spending some time

at Cape May’s Promenade Craft

Shows. Shopping is fun, according to

science. The “pursuit of the new” is

the opposite of boredom, so it can boost your

serotonin levels. Shopping can also provide a

sense of accomplishment — you’ll get a dose

of dopamine as you tick off the gifts you need

for Father’s Day, graduation, wedding season,

etc. Shopping along the promenade adds to

the fun — you move along a line of unlabeled

white tents, not knowing what’s ahead, wondering

whether a favorite from the past has

returned, or if you’ll find a new favorite.

It’s not just the shopping, of course — it’s

the location. There’s something special about

stepping off the sand and suddenly spotting

the bridesmaid gift you’ve been seeking or

pausing on a bike ride to order a personalized

item you can pick up when your other errands

are done. When the thing you need has a connection

to a place you love that thing takes on

added value. That’s why we bring souvenirs

home from vacation, and why we like to send

gifts that have a connection to home. They sell

hair ties in North Carolina, but that won’t stop

me from buying some from a vendor in Cape

May to send to my transplanted daughter.

Discussing your purchase with the artisan

who made it also offers a dose of the “new.”

You might find inspiration in the excellence

of a craft you’ve just learned — the quality

paintings you see were made by some-

one who was once a rookie, after all. You

may meet someone who developed a new

skill during the pandemic, using their former

commute time. Alongside the new vendors

are stalwarts, coming back show after show,

year after year. No mass-produced items are

accepted into the show, and the categories

are limited, so you get a nice blend of jewelry,

paintings, apparel, toys, and other items. You

might find a personalized step stool for your

newly independent tooth brusher, stationery

for the dedicated correspondent in your family,

or accessories for a tough-to-please teen.

Look at belts, wallets or hats for Father’s Day

and there are beach themes abound — find

seascapes for your wall, sand dollar scarves or

starfish jewelry.

The Promenade Craft Shows are

scheduled for June 11 and 12, July 9 and 10,

and August 20 and 21 from 10am to 5pm.

Admission for shoppers is free. Bring your

own bag and your patience — parking is an

extra challenge with the vendor vehicles in

place, and the promenade will get crowded.

The Answer Lady invites inquiries from

gentle readers on all manner of relationship

quandaries, matters of the

heart and ethics. If you’d like to send

a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,

simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate

the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

I work in a large retail store that employs

men and women, but the store manager

expects more from the women than she does

from the men. We girls work from the time we

clock in until we lock the doors. The guys find

ways to spend time in the back room, allegedly

restocking the shelves. They hide behind

the clothing racks, checking their phones or

playing video games. Meanwhile, if one of us

takes a lunch break, our boss yells at us. I don’t

want to cause trouble, but this just isn’t fair.

What should we do? — Malcontents

Dear Mal

A work slowdown technique is always

effective. Do your work a little slower and ask

the help of your male colleagues in a clear,

The Answer Lady

Wise answers to perplexing questions

loud voice, so that the manager hears you and

knows you are making every effort to include

your work colleagues. Then, when lunchtime

nears, order a Lucky Bones fire oven pizza

for all the girls. By all means, take your lunch

break at the same time. Do not share any pizza.

Dear Answer Lady

My father-in-law informed me that for my

birthday he is donating $200 to HIS favorite

charity in MY name. This is very offensive on

so many levels. He didn’t ask me. He told me.

He didn’t care what charity I would prefer,

only what he wanted. My husband thinks I

should be gracious. I find him controlling and

obnoxious. Because he considers himself a

big deal, no one ever stands up to him. I want

to tell him what charity I prefer, so he doesn’t

think I just want to pocket the money. What do

you think? — Offended

Dear Offended

This goes beyond a charity preference.

There’s no point in getting into a contest with

him. The Answer Lady suggests following the

advice of Billy Shakespeare in that “discretion

is the better part of valor.” Say nothing and

send a thank you note. When his birthday

comes around, choose your favorite charity

and make a donation in HIS name. Buy a

gorgeous card at the Whale’s Tale and place

the donation card inside. Invite them over to

dinner. Put a few steaks from Gaiss’ Market on

the barbie. Toast his good health with a bottle

of bubbly procured at Sunset Liquors. A good

time will be had by all.

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces

its second art exhibition of the 2022

season, featuring three regional solo

artists. “Surf, Sand and Sun” by Phil

Courtney, “Influence of Color” by Kate

Mockus-Cipriani and “A Little Levity” by

Penny Beck will be on display June 11 to July 10.

Courtney captures the play of light and

movement of the surf, and the glittering effects

of the sand were his mission these past few

months. His series is painted in oils to achieve

the sparkling elements of his work. Cipriani

characterizes her style as contemporary with

aspects of impressionism. Her work is all dry

pastel paintings meant to reflect the vibrant

colors around us. Beck will portray the whimsical

side of life, inspired by nature and the

creatures of the earth using mostly acrylic.

Art lovers are invited to attend an Opening

Artist Reception on Saturday, June 11 from 6

to 9pm. SOMA is located at 31 Perry Street in

Carpenters Square Mall, Cape May. For more

information, please contact the gallery by

emailing stevesomagallery@gmail.com.

“Ted and Michael” by Penny Beck and more can be seen at the gallery beginning June 11.

MAY came to the shelter as a stray and

although she is nervous at first with new people,

she will warm up after some time. She is

a sweet and gentle girl who loves to wander

around the yard, but not a big fan of toys. May

is new to walking on a leash, but learning. She

would be best in a family with older children

and a slow introduction to cats and dogs.

PRINCESS 2 came to the shelter when her

owner could no longer care for her. She is an

affectionate seven-year-old girl weighing in

at a stocky 61 pounds. Princess loves going

for walks, and she has excellent leash manners.

She is crate trained and good with children

and other dogs. Princess would be a great

addition to any family.

YODA is a calm, settled boy who came to the

shelter after being with his family for five

years. He has excellent leash manners and is

at his happiest cuddling with his family. Yoda

loves people and his previous owners were

devastated to have to surrender him. He will

need a slow introduction to other cats and

dogs, but great with children.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923

APRIL is a beautiful young kitty who is waiting

for a new life. Her last owners surrendered

her, her mother Shakira (right), and her litter

of kittens. She is spunky and sweet and in

need of a new loving home. April would do

well in a home with other cats and children.

She is also spayed and up to date on all vaccinations.

SHAKIRA came to the shelter with one of her

kittens April (left) and the rest of April’s litter.

She is waiting to find a loving family to adopt

her. As she waits, Shakira’s spirit has not broken,

and she is very friendly and playful. She

is up to date on all vaccinations and spayed.

Shakira would do well in a home with other

cats, dogs and children.

NIKE is a silly little cat that was rescued from

a tree by a nice fireman. He seemed to think it

was pretty funny and loved all the attention he

got. Nike is just under a year old and would do

well in a home with other cats, dogs and children.

He is very playful and brave so you may

need to keep an eye on this guy. Nike is up to

date on all vaccinations and neutered.
