Important
assets
stolen
in cafe
break-in
A SMALL eatery at the top of
Dyers Pass has been targeted by
thieves over Queen’s Birthday
weekend.
The Sign of the Kiwi Cafe and
Bar, on Summit Rd, was broken
into during the early hours of
Monday morning.
CCTV footage shows two
people in grey and dark hoodies
stealing items from the store’s
counter and breaking glass onto
the floor.
To see the footage go to
www.starnews.co.nz
In the video burglars can be
seen entering the cafe at 5.22am
through a broken side window
and helping themselves to
drinks in the fridge.
They returned 30 seconds
later armed with a golf club and
ripped out the till from under
the front counter.
A statement online said the
burglars have stolen important
assets crucial to the business’
day-to-day activities.
The business is hoping the
public can help ‘identifying
these guys’ who entered the Sign
of the Kiwi in the early hours of
Queen’s Birthday.
THAT’S ONE great outing
on our front page today –
107-year-old Mary Brakenbury
touring Sumner in a mode of
transport from yesteryear.
Mary celebrated her 107th
birthday with the ride around
Sumner, with daughter Sally.
The birthday treat for the
oldest resident at Edith Cavell
Lifecare & Village came courtesy
of the Sumner Valley Riding
School, so a big shout out
to it for coming to the party.
Mary moved to New Zealand
from England when she
was 90 to be closer to family,
living independently until she
went into Edith Cavell at 105.
Many of the area’s students
go to Linwood College, now
called Te Aratai College. It is
open to the public on Saturday
(see page 3).
A SURVEY is revealing a strong
sense of community in the
Lyttelton Harbour and Port Levy
areas.
The purpose of the city
council survey is to gain a better
understanding of risk tolerance
from the impacts of sea level rise.
“An understanding of
community risk tolerance
can help the community,
rūnanga and council make
informed, community-specific
decisions during phase three of
the coastal hazards adaptation
planning programme, ’ said head
of planning and consents, John
Higgins.
Phase three is co laboration
adaptation planning with
communities. Those in the
Lyttelton/Mt Herbert area wi l
be first. It is estimated this phase
wi l take at least 1.5 years to do
properly.
So far the survey, which wi l
close on Friday, has had more
than 100 responses.
New-look Te Aratai College to
welcome community on site
• By Emily Moorhouse
TE ARATAI College, formerly
Linwood College, will welcome
members of the public on site
to have a look at the brand new
school.
On Saturday, student guides
will walk people through the new
$44 million secondary school at
85 Aldwins Rd from 10am-2pm.
Principal Richard Edmundson
said the school has adopted a
new style of classrooms they
have called a ‘responsive learning
environment’ and after four
weeks, it’s proving successful.
“We are just so fortunate, the
buildings and style of classrooms
are working out exactly how we
hoped they would,” he said.
Te Aratai has standardsized
classrooms with sliding
doors to open up the space
for collaborative learning, as
well as smaller spaces for more
independent learners.
The school has had a long
journey to get to the new site,
relocating to the former Avonside
Girls’ High in July 2019 after
earthquake damage saw the old
Linwood College demolished.
Now, the school has returned
to its roots with a few big
changes, including its new name
Te Aratai, meaning “pathway to
sea” in te reo Māori.
Edmundson said the name
was gifted to the school by
Ngāi Tūāhuriri and the board
unanimously accepted it.
“The reason why it’s so
gorgeous and right is that our
community serves the area
around the school,” he said.
“Of course, changing the name
and that wonderful history of
Linwood is a bittersweet thing
to do, I taught at Linwood from
1990 to 2001 so I’ve got a lot of
history myself involved.”
Edmundson said staff and
students have settled in well and
look forward to welcoming the
community.
A gold coin donation is
encouraged to go towards future
school trips.
Wainui
Beach to
get picnic
tables
• By Mick Jensen
TE PĀTAKA o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board has
approved a grant of $2000 from
its 2021-22 discretionary response
fund to the Wainui Residents
Association for picnic tables.
The association is keen to
promote and facilitate outdoor
recreation at Wainui’s main beach
over the summer season and is
planning to install five new tables.
It wants to encourage use of the
entire foreshore from the sandy
beach to the Wainui Stream,
which will help reduce road and
parking congestion and improve
safety.
The project is estimated to
cost $4202, and $2450 was
requested from the community
board. Other funds have been
raised through sponsorship and
fundraising initiatives.
The Wainui Residents
Association represents 400
permanent and holiday home
residents. It also arranges
community activities such as boat
races, dances, fetes and barbecues,
and manages the community hall.
Breathing new life into old dolls
• By John Cosgrove
THERE IS a box of tissues on
Joyce Reilly’s front counter, and it
gets used quite a bit.
“It is hard for people not to cry,
and many struggle to hold back
the tears,” she said.
But her small cottage industry
in Opawa isn’t connected with
mental health services; the tissues
sit on the front desk of the Dolls
City Hospital.
“Everyone who brings in a doll,
teddy bear or soft toy to be fixed
has an emotional connection
with it,” Reilly said.
“The toys are part of people’s
history and heritage.
“The memories they recall
when they see them all fixed up
again, right as rain, just come
flooding back and the tears are
soon flowing, it’s often very
emotional.”
Customers will open up and
tell her about when and where
and from whom they got the doll
or teddy bear, and how it lives in
a special place in their heart.
“It depends on who gave them
the doll. It could have been
parents or it could have been
grandma, or even the lady next
door. But some of them have got
very vivid memories about their
dolls or teddy bears.”
She said the other day a lady
got her bear back and had
PASSION: Joyce Reilly works on one of her favourite patients, a walkie talkie doll, at the
Dolls City Hospital in Opawa.
difficulty stopping the tears.
“It was her childhood bear and
was over 70 years old,” Reilly
said.
She said dolls are her passion
but when soft toys appear that
are too well worn, she calls on
friends and specialists who
guide her through the
restoration process.
“I bought this business in 2000
and I’m the third owner since
it was started by Rita Brown in
1968.
“I’ve been collecting dolls for
about 45 years, and I dabbled in
their construction and repair,
just the minor things.
“When I bought the business,
the previous owner taught me all
she knew about repairing them.”
Reilly said it gives her a lot of
personal satisfaction fixing dolls,
as she loves meeting people and
enjoys the stories they tell her
about them.
“And then they tell me their
whole life history.
“Some are sad, some are very
interesting, and through them
I get to know the history of
their dolls.”
She said sometimes she feels
sorry for the dolls that come in
looking like they’re on their last
legs.
“But I have to do something to
put them back together again.”
On the other hand, teddy bears
“get really loved”.
“Some of them are a little bit
beyond repair when they come
in, because they’re threadbare.
“You can’t put their fur back
on so I patch them up and tell
the owners to go and buy some
clothes for them.”
Reilly said of all the dolls she
gets to see she most loves working
on the old walkie talkie dolls.
“I’ve seen hundreds of them
and they’re all the same, but
they’re different.
“They come here with different
problems: eyes, hair, legs, plastic
splits, you name it, they’ve got it.
“But they’re the one of the most
enjoyable dolls to work with as
they always come up smiling.”
Reilly said many were made in
New Zealand. The factory was in
Auckland, but it closed around
the 1970s.
“It was a subsidiary of the
factory in the UK, which came to
life just after the Second World
War.
“So these dolls are now 60-70
years old, making them very, very,
special.”
Reilly said when she was a child
a little girl next door had a walkie
talkie doll, but she didn’t.
“So I think it’s been in my
passion all my life, but now I’ve
got lots of them.
“They are made in two pieces
and glued together.”
She said the most common
issue she sees with them are split
seams.
“I learned how to fix most
of their problems and make them
whole again, making
them once again so special in
people’s lives.”
Changes to library services at Akaroa and Little River
• By Mick Jensen
AKAROA LIBRARY users now
have access to a new, low-cost
prepaid broadband service.
The library is offering Skinny
Jump, a programme run by
Skinny that aims to bridge the
digital divide.
A free modem is offered and
no contracts or credit checks are
needed.
The prepaid top-up system
means people can get a 30GB
plan for only $5 and can renew
the plan up to five times each
month.
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board chair Tori Peden said
it was a good news story and
recognition that it is a lot harder
for rural communities to link in
sometimes.
Fellow board member Nigel
Harrison said he would like
to see the service offered in
Lyttelton as well. It was good to
see improvements in the level
of service, but it would be nice
to see Skinny Jump rolled out
across the board.
Harrison was told by city
council staff it would depend on
if Skinny had the capacity and
enough modems available to be
able to offer it in Lyttelton. The
option would be investigated, he
was told.
The service was currently
offered at Linwood Library too.
Meanwhile, things are
operating a little differently at
the Little River Library because
of a staff move and interim
recruitment process.
Customers can expect the
normal library offerings on
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
and Saturday mornings
from 9.30am-12.30pm, when
dedicated library staff are on
site, but at other times customer
service staff will be available
to help with manual issues,
return of items and financial
transactions.
Other library enquires can be
directed to the FingerTip Library
call centre and, if necessary,
through the Book a Librarian
service.
A self-issues machine will
arrive at the library in early July
and the automated service will
mean customers can issue items,
return items, and pay for any
holds in their own time.
A new librarian appointment
is expected to be announced
soon.
Abraham is a very accomplished potter
and the Mt Pleasant Pottery Group is very
honoured to have her as the guest exhibitor
this year.
The Mt Pleasant Pottery Group has been
based at its new location, 140 Main Rd,
Redcliffs, for 12 months and this will be
the second exhibition held in the new location.
Walking, running group
formed – members wanted
• By Mick Jensen
EXERCISE: Steph Berry striding out in Flea Bay.
A NEW peninsula walking
and running group is aiming
to connect people in the great
outdoors.
The group is the idea of Pigeon
Bay resident Steph Berry who
asked online if anyone was
interested in coming together
and received plenty of positive
responses.
The group now numbers
30 and the first gathering is
planned soon.
Berry said she expected numbers
to build and for the group
to grow organically over time.
Running and walking could
happen weekly, fortnightly
or monthly and very much
depended on what people
wanted to do.
“I’ve set the group up, but the
idea is that anyone can organise
things and can go at their own
pace and distance,’’ she said.
Berry has previously organised
walking and running groups
when she lived in Kaiapoi.
She had also coached kids
and taken them on tramping
experiences and been involved
with a running group in Oxford.
A former keen runner and
mountain biker, she has an auto
immune disease and is just getting
back into walking.
“It’s nice to have other people
to run or walk with. My husband
is a runner and has no-one
to run with on the peninsula,
so I decided it’s time to get the
word out because there must
be other people in the same
situation.’’
Berry said there had been a
disconnect in the community
in recent years and bringing
like-minded people together in
the outdoors was a positive step
forward, which offered a sense
of community.
The peninsula had some great
areas to explore and afterwards
people could take out the
Thermos and sit and chat over a
cuppa.
• To find out more about
the group, check out
the Peninsula Runners &
Walkers Facebook page
TREAT: Mary being presented with her birthday cake by
Edith Cavell Lifecare & Village caregiver April Philpott.
Mary has a fighting spirit
• From page 1
The birthday treat came courtesy
of the Sumner Valley Riding
School, which took Mary and
her daughter Sally for a sedate
inspection of the neighbourhood.
Birthday celebrations continued
afterwards with lunch at The
George Hotel, Mary’s favourite
dining spot.
Mary was born on May 13,
1915, in Bedford, England and
served in the Observer Corps
during World War 2.
She married Victor in 1943, but
he died in 1974 at age 65.
Mary moved to New Zealand
at the grand age of 90 to be closer
to family and lived independently
until she went into Edith Cavell
Lifecare at 105.
Daughter Sally Bentley said
her mother had always had a
tremendous sense of humour and
remained “quite a character’’.
“She’s very deaf and practically
blind, but she has a fighting
spirit.’’
That spirit had come out when
she fell ill on her birthday and
was later diagnosed with Covid.
“She was sick for the first couple
of days, but by the third day,
and feeling a little better, she told
me that a little cold and flu wasn’t
going to kill her that easily.’’
Mary remains active with the
St Andrews Sumner-Redcliffs
Church and attends a seniors
group on Wednesdays.
The Gollans Bay Quarry
GOLLANS BAY lies below
the north-eastern side of Te
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour,
embraced by Te Awaparahi Bay
and Battery Point.
The English name for the bay
comes from civil engineer and
surveyor Donald Gollan (1811-
1887), a Scotsman who in 1849
was one of the New Zealand
Company’s survey staff who
mapped Canterbury.
He planned and began the
construction of the Lyttelton to
Sumner road, which was completed
in 1858. There was even a
suggestion in those early days of
the bay being used as the settlement’s
main harbour, with a tunnel
through the hill to Sumner,
though this idea was superseded
by the Lyttelton to Christchurch
rail tunnel (opened in 1867).
The fortifications at Battery Point
those on Ripapa Island; Ripapa
had been an important Ngāi
Tahu fortified pa site, still in occupation
until the early 1830s.
The Battery Point defences
were the earliest European ones
in the Harbour; it was not until
1939 that the gun emplacements
at Awaroa Godley Head were
constructed. Although Battery
Point is no longer accessible
to the public, the structures at
Awaroa Godley Head are still
able to be visited today via a
series of walking tracks.
The slopes of the hills encircling
Gollans Bay are extremely
steep and virtually treeless.
Although challenging to access,
those rocky hillsides have
provided a valuable source of
rock and fill since the days of the
region’s first major construction
projects.
The Lyttelton Port Company
is now legally responsible for the
quarry, which has been an integral
contributing factor to the
company’s development and port
expansion. In the 1950s and
early 60s it was the source of material
for the development of the
Cashin Quay container berth,
which opened in 1963. Our
photographs showing a confident
and relaxed looking quarry crew
with their large earthmoving
machinery was doubtless taken
during this phase.
Post earthquakes, a major
project undertaken by Taylors
Contracting Company saw
240,000 cu m being moved to
create the current roadways in
the quarry. The huge land reclamation
project at Te Awaparahi
has seen 6ha of the 16 ha of land
reclaimed coming from fill from
the quarry; an initial 10ha was
constructed using rubble from
the city centre and its surrounds.
First Lexus EV leaves a strong impression
GIVEN ITS wide range of hybrid
models, Lexus could well have
been excused for not entering the
electric vehicle market.
I guess it sees the EV market
as ever-expanding, and being
there would confirm their
commitment to sustainable
and environmentally-friendly
automobile production.
Lexus’ first fully electric model is
labelled UX300e and, no surprises
here, it’s a sport utility vehicle; well,
Lexus labels the UX as a crossover,
and it is still available in hybrid
form, the latter has been a popular
model for Lexus. If you think of
Toyota RAV4 size, then the UX is
about that stature, and the hybrid
model is a car that I very much
like with its 2-litre synergy drive
system.
The UX300e expands on that,
there’s no petrol engine, it has a
high output synchronous motor
that develops up to 160kW and
300Nm, the latter available from
almost zero revolutions.
What’s more, Lexus has done
the research on what buyers want
from an EV, it has range – 360km
– it can be charged in 50min from
zero to 75 per cent on a quick
charge (80min to 100 per cent)
and it is priced just below the
$80k threshold so it qualifies for
the Government’s $8625 clean car
discount.
Not only is it an affordable EV
and one that has practicality on its
side, you are also getting a luxury
car in the mix. Those special
features that Lexus builds into all of
its models are there in the UX300e,
it has been built to all the quality
values Lexus prides itself on, it is
plush, superbly comfortable, and
the engineering that has gone into
its manufacture is state-of-the-art.
It is also a quick car scampering
to 100km/h in 7.5sec, which is
the benefit of electric delivery,
and it will complete an overtake
manoeuvre in 5sec. The latter is
attributed to the solid early to midpoint
power delivery.
Not only is the UX300e a spirited
drive, it does so in an understated
way, it is quiet, and when I say that,
it is astoundingly quiet. Obviously,
there is no sound from under the
bonnet other than an almost silent
siren-like hum, but there is little
road nor wind noise.
In terms of handling, the
UX300e has accurate corner
turn-in and definite steering feel.
This is something Lexus does so
well, the steering is involving and
communicative.
Riding on beautiful Michelin
tyres (225/50 x 18in), there is a lot
of rubber in contact with the road
and it shows, grip levels are high
and there is little sensation power
is driving through the front wheels
only, the UX300e is balanced and
controlled and, of course, you
get an amazingly compliant ride,
which is traditional with all Lexus
models.
That luxury feel doesn’t end
CHARGED UP: The Lexus UX buyer has the choice of
hybrid or fully electric.
LEXUS UX300e: Plug-in and top up at a nationwide charge port.
there, the cockpit and cabin area
are plush, the way Lexus creates
interiors is a real credit. The test car
was trimmed with white leather,
yet there are contrasting elements
which work effectively to tone
down the full-on effect of light.
There are also the ingredients
which luxury car owners would
expect even from an SUV. The
UX300e is chock full of the latest
technology for safety, comfort and
convenience, and its styling and
design inside and out are eyecatching
and desirable. All of the
ingredients are in place to make
it very much a part of the Lexus
family.
In terms of operation the
UX300e needs little special
attention. The evaluation car
arrived with just one charge cable, a
three-pin plug to type 2. There are
two charge inlets, one on the right
of the vehicle for domestic supply,
and one on the left for charging
from a designated charge port
using double type 2 connectors.
I simply got into the habit of
plugging in each time the car was
stationary on my driveway, the
cable has good length at over 8m
therefore it was no issue to plug
into my garage socket, and that way
the UX300e was always at 100 per
cent when I went to drive off. The
charge box itself is also very useful,
it has graphics that continuously
displays the charging status. Lexus
also claims a seven-hour time span
to charge from a home supply.
From behind the wheel, nothing
is demanding, you just select drive
(or reverse) and you are moving
• Price – Lexus UX300e
• Dimensions – Length,
continuously variable
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 7.5sec
just like a traditional vehicle
with automatic transmission,
you will feel strong regenerative
braking through the motor and
transmission, that feeling is useful
for taking the load off the brakes
during the city/suburb commute,
making the stop-start journey
just a little more relaxing. Also
it must be noted that automatic
battery charging takes place on
deceleration.
There are also differing drive
modes, just like you would find in
any Lexus/Toyota – sport, normal
and eco. Each has their own
distinctive feel, but as I normally
do in any evaluation, I selected the
default normal mode mostly, and
experienced sport and economy
just to briefly ascertain what each
represents.
As they would suggest, there
is greater power delivery in sport
mode and a dulled accelerator feel
in economy mode. The way I see
it, normal mode is clever enough to
recognise the driver’s acceleration
patterns anyway, and there was
never a point where the UX300e
wasn’t responding the way I wanted
it to.
The EcoDrop transfer station at
Parkhouse Rd isn’t the most likely
place to enter into a conversation
about motor vehicles, but I had
some plastic containers and
bottles that I dropped off there for
recycling. The moment I stopped, a
couple noticed the word electric on
the side of the UX300e and asked
me several questions about the car,
they were very interested to know
it wasn’t a hybrid yet a fully electric
vehicle.
They also raised a question about
battery longevity; I was able to
tell them that Lexus claim 80 per
cent of battery capacity will still be
available after 10 years of service.
Interestingly, I was also able to
tell them that the battery system
in the UX300e is a modular type,
it is compacted into 11 different
segments, each can be replaced if
found faulty.
My wife is also eager to join
the plug-in revolution; I’m still a
petrol-head at heart and I will need
a lot of convincing to change the
way I see travel going forward, and
anyway the UX300e is way out of
our reach.
However, I do appreciate that
with fuel prices at such a high
level and the ongoing concerns
about supply, that EVs are here
to stay. Lexus has pitched the
UX300e well, and I can only see it
being a considerable success in our
market.
