AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA
The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
(APO) is New Zealand’s designated
metropolitan orchestra, serving
Auckland, the country’s largest and most
vibrant city, with concerts and events
throughout the year.
The APO presents more than 60
performances annually. A comprehensive
season of symphonic work brings
Auckland’s orchestra together with
many of the world’s finest classical
musicians, while collaborations with
some of New Zealand’s most exciting
contemporary artists speaks to the APO’s
reputation of being endlessly innovative,
passionate and versatile.
Internationally acclaimed Italian-Danish
conductor Giordano Bellincampi has been
Music Director of the APO since 2016.
Beloved by APO musicians, audiences
and donors alike, his tenure has resulted
in a period of significant artistic growth for
Auckland’s orchestra.
Recent guest artists with the orchestra
have included tenor Simon O’Neill,
pianist Michael Houstoun, violinists
Arabella Steinbacher, Ning Feng and
Viktoria Mullova, cellist Julian Steckel,
pipa virtuoso Wu Man, and conductors
Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bertrand de Billy,
and Xian Zhang.
In 2022, the APO presents a wideranging
and dynamic season featuring
many of Aotearoa’s best talents alongside
debuts and welcome returns of many
renowned international musicians.
The exceptional guest artists sharing the
stage with the APO this year include
violinists Clara-Jumi Kang and James
Ehnes, pianists Kristian Bezuidenhout,
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, and Benjamin
Grosvenor, and conductors Gilbert Varga,
Shiyeon Sung and Alpesh Chauhan.
Complementing our international artists,
we are also delighted to showcase New
Zealand-born violinist Amalia Hall, and
APO’s own Principal Clarinettist Jonathan
Cohen and Principal Harpist Ingrid Bauer
among many more.
The APO is proud to support both
New Zealand Opera and the Royal
New Zealand Ballet in their Auckland
performances. It also works in
partnership with Auckland Arts Festival,
the Auckland Pride Festival, the New
Zealand International Film Festival and
the Australian National Academy of Music
among other organisations.
Through its numerous APO Connecting
(education, outreach and community)
initiatives, the APO offers opportunities
to more than 20,000 young people
and adults nationwide.
Each year the APO performs to
more than 250,000 people live and
over the course of the pandemic, has
reached more than 4.3 million viewers
globally through livestreams and other
digital offerings.
WELCOME / HAERE MAI
Tēnā koutou,
Through the ongoing uncertainties
of the pandemic, we believe in the
importance and power of music.
The last two years have taught us
to always be open to change – so
while disruptions will continue and
our delivery methods will need to be
flexible, this year Auckland’s Orchestra
will be keeping the music playing.
There is something for everyone in this
year’s Premier Series, which is packed with
a vibrant collection of classical delights,
contemporary masters and breath-taking
musical experiences. Every concert offers
something special to look forward to, be
it a new work by Brooklyn-based New
Zealand composer Gemma Peacocke, an
improvisation on the elaborate Hungarian
instrument the cimbalom, or the dark
emotional thunder of Brahms’ final symphony
– to name but a few.
Our season is made possible by the
ongoing generosity of our supporters, and
we particularly thank The New Zealand
Herald and its parent company NZME. for its
longstanding support of the APO. We also
thank our core funders Auckland Council,
Creative New Zealand, Foundation North
and the Four Winds Foundation. Especially
throughout the upheaval of the past year,
their ongoing support has been invaluable.
Kia kaha,
Welcome,
At New Zealand Media and
Entertainment we are proud of our
long-standing partnership with the
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
and The New Zealand Herald
Premier Series.
Year on year, the APO showcases
exceptional performances featuring some
of the world’s leading artists alongside the
best of New Zealand’s own. We continue to
be impressed by the APO’s dedication to its
art form, and determination to keep making
music available for us all no matter what the
pandemic throws in the way.
At NZME we are focused on keeping
Kiwis in the know. This year’s series has
been carefully crafted to appeal to everyone
from long-time classical music lovers to
those listening for the first time. I’m thrilled
by the breadth of artistry awaiting us, from
the piano concertos of Grieg and Mozart to
the magical soundscapes of Debussy and
Ravel, and don’t forget the daring delights of
contemporary composers John Adams and
Thomas Adès.
We look forward to sharing a fantastic
2022 season with you all.
PROGRAMME NOTES
Gillian Whitehead (b.1941)
Tai timu, tai pari
for violin and orchestra
WORLD PREMIERE
ONE SINGLE MOVEMENT, IN FIVE SECTIONS
DURATION: c.20’
For this evening’s concert,
Dame Gillian has written these notes:
I wrote the concerto on the Otago Peninsula,
in the wake of the first wave of Covid. I’d
worked on other pieces during 2020, all
initiated before the epidemic (and cancelled
because of it), but this piece is written under
the influences of these new times. I felt
initially that I couldn’t write anything that was
harsh or strident, but rather the sounds had
to be gentle. This was probably something to
do with the uncertainty, the keeping safe and
the exhortations to be kind we’d experienced
over those past 18 months. However, as I
wrote, the structure of the piece took over,
and that self-censorship went away.
From my studio on the Peninsula I can
look across the harbour towards the hills
opposite, and what I see constantly changes.
The tide ebbs and flows (‘tai timu, tai pari’
translates from te reo Māori as low tide, high
tide), light plays on the water, birds forage
for food, rest on the water, whirl in flocks.
When I was writing, images of the variation
in waves lapping on the shore, of distant
disputes between birds or sea-creatures
and birds in flight, of footprints on the
beach came to mind. Not that the piece is
primarily a soundscape – more than most of
my pieces it harks back to the balance and
proportions of the classical era.
Tai timu, tai pari is in a single movement,
lasting a bit over 20 minutes, where the
sections, in general terms, are slow, fast,
cadenza, fast and slow.
Tai timu, tai pari is dedicated
to Andrew Beer.
INTERVAL
Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943)
Symphony No.2
FOUR MOVEMENTS:
I. Largo – Allegro moderato
II. Scherzo: Allegro molto
III. Adagio
IV. Finale: Allegro vivace
DURATION: c.58’
The disastrous reception of Sergei
Rachmaninov’s First Symphony in 1897
nearly put an end to his career as a
composer. Only after a three-year struggle
and an intensive course of psychotherapy did
the shattered composer gradually re-build
his musical personality.
By 1907, he had recovered completely
and was being hailed as a world-famous
composer, conductor and pianist. In that
year, he exorcised his ghosts by unveiling his
Second Symphony, a large and absorbing
work that shows the composer at the summit
of his art. Rachmaninov never said that the
Second Symphony told the story of his
journey back from nervous breakdown to
artistic health, but a struggle from weakness
to strength can nevertheless be easily read
into the music.
14 EBB & FLOW

A frequent but half-hidden signpost on
this journey is the Latin hymn for the dead,
the Dies Iræ, which was almost an obsession
with Rachmaninov, who loved its overtones
of Fate, Judgement, and Eternity.
The first movement has a perfectly arched
introduction that starts in the deep gloom of
the cellos and basses, then strives upwards
towards the light. Despite a huge effort
and a thrilling moment of climax, the music
falls back until only a sad, Tristanesque cor
anglais is left. Short, breathless woodwind
phrases appear four times, and the strings
answer with a swell that is grounded
on the opening few notes, and provides
the first main theme.
A more lyrical second theme follows
before the large development section in
which the battle is on between rising energy
and emotional retreat. Two big, dissonant
climaxes are heard before a recapitulation
that continues the fight, but leads to an
ending that is cut short by a few swift blows.
In the Scherzo that follows, a full-blooded
theme for horns is built from the opening
notes of the Dies Iræ, and a second section
is warm and romantic. Following a repeat of
the Scherzo, the music dies away, muttering
darkly, but in the wonderful Adagio of the
third movement, a vast, sunlit sea of sound
is revealed, harbouring an unforgettable solo
for clarinet, and showing Rachmaninov’s
string-writing at its peak.
Thus refreshed, the composer produces
an exuberant finale. There are pounding
rhythms, march-like themes, glittering,
tarantella-like dance sections, and grand
moments of recognition as earlier themes
reappear at the close, crowning the work
with an air of triumph and conviction.
