Bid to stop burnouts with
temporary roundabout
• By Emily Moorhouse
TEMPORARY traffic calming
measures will be installed in
Avondale to prevent cars from
performing burnouts.
The city council will conduct
a trial by installing a temporary
roundabout at Cowes St and
Orrick Cres to see how effective
it was in stopping burnouts,
said Waitai Coastal-Burwood
Community Board chair
Kelly Barber.
Barber said
the board was
“stoked” to see
city council staff
acting on the
issue, with the
roundabout likely
Kelly
Barber
to be installed
this month or
next.
“For a long
time there’s been complaints
in Avondale about cars going
too fast. It’s been a bit of a pain
in people’s lives with people
speeding through that area, and
they’ve also had a lot of hassle
with people doing burnouts,”
Barber said.
Barber said the area was part
of the city council’s Slow Speed
Neighbourhoods programme,
but the board wanted this to be
the first step in looking at traffic
calming, as more needed to
be done.
“Putting up a sign saying 40km
intersection to prevent cars from performing burnouts.
an hour doesn’t slow people
down, you know it’s things like
judder bars and that sort of stuff
that actually makes a difference.
I was really surprised that they
got stuck into it so quickly, so
they must’ve really heard us,”
Barber said.
Consultation on the Slow
Speeds Neighbourhood programme
for Avondale was open
from November to December
last year, and the city council
received 62 submissions from
individuals and groups.
The consultation process also
highlighted issues around antisocial
driver behaviour, particularly
at the Cowes St and Orrick Cres
intersection.
“The Cowes St/Orrick Cres
intersection is notorious for
burnouts due to the size of this
intersection. There are always
tyre marks (from donuts and
other dangerous skids) on
this stretch of road, as well as
concerns for the noise it creates,”
one resident’s submission said.
Another said: “The corner of
Orrick Cres and Cowes St is a
very bad corner for doughnuts.
On average there are about two a
week. As well as being very loud
(often it sounds like the car is
about to crash into the house),
they can be dangerous. On at
least one occasion the car has
crashed into the lamp post and
the driver had to be taken off in
an ambulance.”
Barber said the roundabout
would act as a trial and if
successful the city council might
look at expanding its use.
Sparks performance
a night to remember
• By Emily Moorhouse
VIOLINIST ARNA Morton
has grown up with the Sparks
concert – only this time
around things looked a little
different.
Morton traded the view of
the stage for the view of the
audience as she performed
with the Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra at
Saturday night’s Sparks in
North Hagley Park.
Although performing
at Sparks was a firs time
experience for Morton,
she said the concert went
rea ly we l and had a great
atmosphere.
“I was just so excited to be
back performing together
with the band,” she said.
“Obviously last year we had
a lot of disruptions so it was
nice to have everyone get back
into it.”
Even after playing the
violin since she was five, the
coastal area resident said
it was normal to sti l get
nervous before a performance,
especia ly for a large crowd.
“There’s this heightened
sense of adrenaline before
you go on stage. I definitely
still get nervous, which is
important,” she said. “It’s
about channe ling the energy
required for a performance.”
about
Bromley
‘stench’
• By Emily Moorhouse
RESIDENTS LIVING near the
Bromley wastewater treatment
plant have been “coping with the
stench” for weeks now and want
something done to fix it.
The wastewater treatment plant
caught fire in November and has
been emitting an unpleasant smell
ever since, causing frustration
among residents.
Katinka Visser has lived in
Bromley for 35 years, and said
while the stench hasn’t been as
bad during the new year for her,
she sometimes felt as though she
couldn’t breathe.
“I’ve had three nights that I
virtually couldn’t breathe, it was
that bad, there’s like a fog and it’s
just sitting.’’
She said even after putting her
head under the blankets, she
could sti l smell the stench.
Visser said because the wind
has been coming from a southerly
direction lately, she hasn’t been
experiencing the sme l as strongly,
but knows that residents close by
do.
“I’m so thankful that I’m not
affected as much as most people,”
she said.
“There are people way, way
worse off than me.”
Money
puts hand
up for local
elections
• By Emily Moorhouse
FORMER Coastal-Burwood
chairwoman Kim Money has
made a bid to return to local body
politics, with plans to stand for
council as an independent for the
Coastal Ward.
Celeste Donovan
is the current
Coastal Ward
councillor and
said it was always
great for democracy
when you
had a choice.
“It’s
encouraging to hear another
woman is standing and there will
be others putting up a hand closer
to the election date,” Donovan
said.
Money was the board’s
chairwoman in 2016, but didn’t
stand for re-election in 2019 due
to personal circumstances.
Now she says those
circumstances have changed
and the timing is right for her to
throw her hat back in the arena.
“I’m keen to get back again and
represen this community that I
love so much,” she said. “We rea ly
do need that experience from the
coast sitting a the council table
and I would love to do that for my
community.”
Money said it had been
unfortunate she couldn’t stand
again in 2019 as there were a few
unfinished things she needed to
do. • Turn to page 4
New-look Te Aratai College to
welcome community on site
• By Emily Moorhouse
TE ARATAI College, formerly
Linwood College, will welcome
members of the public on site
to have a look at the brand new
school.
On Saturday, student guides
will walk people through the new
$44 million secondary school at
85 Aldwins Rd from 10am-2pm.
Principal Richard Edmundson
said the school has adopted a
new style of classrooms they
have called a ‘responsive learning
environment’ and after four
weeks, it’s proving successful.
“We are just so fortunate, the
buildings and style of classrooms
are working out exactly how we
hoped they would,” Edmundson
said.
Te Aratai has standardsized
classrooms with sliding
doors to open up the space
for collaborative learning, as
well as smaller spaces for more
independent learners.
The school has had a long
journey to get to the new site,
relocating to the former Avonside
Girls’ High in July 2019 after
earthquake damage saw the
old Linwood College
demolished.
Now, the school has returned
to its roots with a few big
changes, including its new name
Te Aratai, meaning “pathway to
sea” in te reo Māori.
Edmundson said the name
was gifted to the school by
Ngāi Tūāhuriri and the board
unanimously accepted it.
“The reason why it’s so
gorgeous and right is that our
community serves the area
around the school,” he said.
“Of course, changing the name
and that wonderful history of
Linwood is a bittersweet thing
to do, I taught at Linwood from
1990 to 2001 so I’ve got a lot of
history myself involved.”
Edmundson said staff and
students have settled in well and
look forward to welcoming the
community.
A gold coin donation is
encouraged to go towards future
school trips.
Energy
help 200
households
A PROJECT to help low and fixed
income households reduce their
energy bills will benefit from a
$49,763 sustainability fund grant.
The fund was set up by the city
council to assist with community
action on climate change.
A proposal from Christchurch
business Ecobulb will see the
Home Energy Project pilot rolled
out to help 200 low and fixed
income households.
The company will install LED
bulbs and water-efficient shower
heads, provide energy saving
tips and support householders to
select the best energy provider.
The scheme aims to save almost
700 tonnes of greenhouse gas
emissions over 10 years through
energy savings.
The pilot project will also be
used to gather information to
support a funding application
to the $17m energy hardship
programme offered by the Ministry
of Business, Innovation and
Employment.
“If Ecobulb is able to expand
the programme it will potentially
benefit about 20,000 Christchurch
households,” said sustainability
committee chair, councillor Sara
Templeton.
Samoan Language Week:
Talofa! Samoan Language week was celebrated from
31 May - 3 June and celebrates the third most spoken
language in Aotearoa New Zealand. During this week,
we learnt a Samoan word each day of the week,
enjoyed a variety of performances by our Pasifika
ākonga from Y5-13 in a packed Te Rau Ika, played
Samoan games during lunch times and finished the
week by enjoying a delicious traditionally cooked umu.
It was incredible to see our ākonga celebrate their
language and be proud of their culture!
Hikuawa celebrates
being a Designer:
During Week 4 & 5 of this term, our dispositional
focus has been on Designer. Our ākonga
participated in a challenge to design a scooter
track for the junior playground. We were blown
away by the designs our ākonga submitted and
ultimately awarded prizes to 5 runners up and a
winner. The final design will have a combination
of all the elements from these designs.
Community gardens grow in popularity
• By Anna Sargent
PEOPLE ARE flocking to
Christchurch community
gardens to save money and boost
mental health.
New Brighton Community
Garden manager Catherine
O’Neill said visitor and volunteer
numbers have “skyrocketed”
since the beginning of Covid
lockdowns.
The garden has about 17 volunteers
and 13 visitors each day
it is open. Funding and administration
manager Lin Klenner
said this was “easily double” the
number of people from two years
ago.
Klenner attributed this increased
interest in gardening and
vegetable growing to people having
been stuck at home during
lockdowns from 2020.
“The problem is a lot of people
didn’t have the skills, so when
lockdown was over people came
to community gardens to learn
more.”
O’Neill said being able to
grow your own vegetables was
“empowering”, as people became
more self-sufficient and less reliant
on outside sources for fresh
produce.
Volunteers at New Brighton
Community Garden can take
home vegetables and seedlings
after they have worked for two
hours.
Regular volunteer Tony has
helped at the garden for three
years. He said he appreciates the
vegetables he gets to take home,
and the skills he has learned in
growing different plants.
Tony volunteers all year
around and enjoys “seeing the
four seasons” being reflected in
the garden.
Christchurch South Community
Gardens Trust manager
Christine Blance also reported
an increased interest from people
wanting to learn vegetablegrowing
skills.
“There is a satisfaction and
pleasure in creating something
yourself and sharing the crops
with people,” she said.
Both Christchurch South
Community Garden and
Richmond Community Garden
have reported an increase in
volunteers over the last two
years.
O’Neill said the mental health
benefits of gardening were well
known.
“They’ve done studies on
wellbeing and one big thing is
getting your hands in the soil,
PRODUCE: Volunteers at the garden can take home some
of the fresh vegetables harvested.
to get good feelings into your
brain.”
A literature review by UK
organisations Garden Organic
and Sustain said gardening
and community food growing
improved mental and physical
health. It claimed gardening can
reduce stress and depression, and
improve people’s health because
they are eating more fruit and
vegetables.
The social connection aspect
of community gardens can also
boost mental health. Tony said
his mood always improved after
spending time at the garden.
High food prices are also
driving people to grow their own
vegetables.
Fruit and vegetable prices at
supermarkets have jumped 17 per
cent over the last year, according
to Stats NZ. The biggest increases
were the cost of tomatoes, broccoli
and iceberg lettuces.
Klenner said rising prices
made it more attractive for
volunteers to come to the
community garden, to be able to
take home some vegetables and
learn growing skills they can use
in their own gardens.
Saving money was a significant
reason why people wanted to
learn how to grow vegetables at
Richmond Community Garden,
chairperson Hayley Guglietta
said.
“I think it’s essential for society
to learn how to grow from a
seed.”
Pupils and police go head-to-head
RACE: Constable Sam Crozier watches as the pupils finish
the inflatable course.
COMMUNITY: After the obstacle course, pupils chatted with police officers about their job
and enjoyed a barbecue together.
PARKVIEW PĀRUA School
pupils were the first to go headto-head
against police officers
on a giant inflatable course
as it travels around 75
schools throughout the
country.
The 33-metre long and
10-metre high obstacle course
saw everyone jumping, flipping
and sliding their way to the
finish line as part of community
engagement initiative Blue Light.
Blue Light is a programme
aimed at encouraging
relationships between police,
young people, their parents and
the community.
Afterwards, the pupils enjoyed
a barbecue and chatted with
police officers, as well as checked
out the police cars.
Head chefs Senior Constables
Craig Roberts and Richard
Brunton – who holds the
record for eating 10 sausages
with bread at a Blue Light
barbecue – served up 400
sausages.
Roberts said all-in-all it was a
great day for everyone.
“It allowed us to interact
with lots of young people and
hopefully create a positive
impression of police and Blue
Light,” Roberts said.
FUN: The pupils were able to have a look at the police car
after playing on the giant inflatable.
