AUSTRALIAN ARGYLE

DIAMONDS

Located in the remote East Kimberley Region of Western Australia, the

Argyle diamond mine commenced production in 1983, and

since has enthralled the world with a depth, range and intensity

of colour never seen before. Owned in full by Rio Tinto, the

Argyle mine has to date produced over 800 million carats of

diamonds ranging in colour from brown to pink to blue to white.

The Argyle lease tenants the traditional lands of the Gija and Mirriuwung

people. In 2005, an Indigenous Land Use Agreement and Participation

Agreement was set up between the mine and the Traditional Owners of

the mining lease area. It was an important step towards Argyle’s

sustainability goals and put in place a formal relationship that will help

deliver long- term economic benefits to Aboriginal communities in the

East Kimberley region.

Having exhausted economical production, the Argyle mine ceased

operations in November 2020, making the already rare and coveted

Argyle Australian diamonds even more in demand.

PINK DIAMONDS FROM

THE ARGYLE MINE

The Argyle mine produces a wide range of

coloured diamonds however, the mine is best

recognised for its production of rare pink

diamonds and accounts for 90% of the world’s

pink diamond supply.

RARITY

Less than 1% of the Argyle mines production were

pink diamonds. Since the Argyle mine ceased

operations in 2020 the already rare and coveted

Pink diamonds from the Argyle mine became

even more in demand. This resulted in their value

significantly increasing year on year.

AUTHENTICITY

All of our Pink diamonds from the Argyle mine

above 0.08ct are laser inscribed with their own

unique Argyle Lot Number.

The lot number along with the Gem Identification

and Authenticity Document, verifies the chain of

custody that the diamond has come from the Argyle

mine to the customers hands.

COLOUR

There are three factors considered when looking at

the colour of a pink diamond, they are the diamonds

hue, tone and saturation. Hue refers to the dominant

colour of the diamond. Tone refers to the amount

of lightness or darkness in the diamond. Saturation

refers to the strength or intensity of the hue. The

more intense the colour, the more expensive the

diamond.

ARGYLE WHITE DIAMONDS

After spoting a diamond resting ontop of an ant

hill in the Kimberley region of Western Australia,

geologists Frank Hughes & Warren Atkinson

discovered one of the richest diamond deposits

in the world. After many years of investigation, this

diamond deposit became the world renowned

Argyle mine in 1983.

While the Argyle mine predominantly produced

brown, champagne and cognac diamonds, White

diamonds were also unearthed, amounting to only

a slim 2% of the gem quality stones unearthed

from the mine!

Brown diamonds get their colour from being

subjected to extreme heat and pressure after the

stones formation in the earth. This stress displaces

carbon atoms and creates a texture known as

‘graining’ within the diamonds crystal structure,

which changes the way that light passes through

the diamond. The light that reaches the human eye

causes us to see the diamonds as brown.
